Hey Jeremy and Jillian. I'm the DGrubbs from the video! Now you can see why I donated and wanted you guys to see this one! 😂 Most people have similar reactions and are speechless the first time they see it (my jaw was on the floor myself and I have been a Kasey fan for decades). And it keeps getting better with repeated viewings. I believe it belongs up there with the greatest covers of all time! If you want to do more Kasey, I suggest her song Ain't No Little Girl the PBS Bluegrass Underground version. So a little background: Kasey is an incredibly successful solo country artist in Australia after growing up playing in the family band. Her dad still performs with her (that was him on the lap steel). She is the youngest person to ever be inducted into the Australian Recording artist Hall of Fame and has won 14 awards from them 9 for best country album. Her band is a mix of country/bluegrass but they can clearly rock hard. As for the cell phone thing, the song was professionally recorded but not filmed, so hence the call for the audience to send cell phone footage. Anyway thanks for taking my request, judging by the fact you already have 122 comments in a few hours, hopefully you will get tons of views, likes and subscribers off the back of this! At the very least, I sense you have some new fans in Australia.

Good job David. Eventually we’ll get this song out there and everyone will know about it. It amazes me how people say Eminems version is upbeat, Kasey didn’t changed the words, she just slowed it down.

I would never have labelled the drummer as country or bluegrass 😆. Syd is rock from way back. My favourite drummer ever. Look up Mantissa and you can see his early days.

    I'll never come to terms with this insane version of Lose Yourself. This song is on repeat, I play it everyday on UA-cam and Spotify, and yet, it doesn't have the views you would expect. idc because I get to spring this on unsuspecting souls. How haunting is her voice and, hold yourself, omg, how angry do you have to be, to leave it all on stage. So far, the best cover of any song ever, and you can throw in the classics, because this tops them all. btw the 2-letter abbreviation for Austria is AT;

  • @archcollie5708
    @archcollie5708 11 місяців тому +28

Kasey presented this performance as her life in song - as a journey. It starts with the soft plead of uncertainty highlighting a lack of confidence. Then the mood all changed to a cry of anguish and determination. Finally, after all the hard work comes tremendous acclamation and success. She lost herself and left her soul on stage, laid bare and battered. What an unbelievable and brilliant deconstruction of Eminem's incredible artistry.

  • @tobeski

She is (or was when recording this) a 45 year old mother of three who's been on the road and recording with the family band since she was young (that's her dad on slide guitar). She's lived the life in the song, she's an Australian Hall of Fame member in her own right, and she feels the lyrics hard - she's a massive Eminem fan as well and came up with the arrangement in lockdown; while it's now a live staple for her, this was one of the first tryouts with a audience which is why they're so blown away

I saw Kasey in an interview about a decade ago. They asked her what music she listens to and she said she listens to a lot of different music and she loves Eminem. I think you can tell she really appreciates the song. Kasey has been popular in Australia for decades for county/folk/pop music. She is a great storyteller, as you can tell from this performance

Notice the first 2 verses are story telling. A narrative in the third person ( he / his). The third verse is in the present tense and the first person ( i / me). Hope this helps people understand why "the mood all changed"

Kasey Chambers is an Australian treasure. She is known within the US Bluegrass, Alt Country and Americana scenes but she has never broken out into the US mainstream. Her structure to ‘ Lose Yourself’ reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven and The Who’s Behind Blue Eyes. Her performance reminds me of Janis Joplin singing Ball and Chain at Monterey

She brought the heart and soul to the song, haunting and then the anguish. She then found the anger and rage. Her interpretation is brilliant, she worked on this during covid lockdown. This was the 17th & last show of her Behind the Barricades tour. Lose Yourself had been the final encore song at each venue. It had been SO well received by the fans that "they" (her team) decided to record this live take at the mixing desk. The audience were asked to keep their "enthusiasm" in check so the audio was not drowned out (which is why the fans are so subdued until he song ends.)
When Kasey & the team listened to the recording, they were kicking themselves that they hadn't filmed this masterful piece - THAT'S when Kasey sent a call out on her social media platforms for fan phone footage

Casey started performing with her family in the Dead Ringer Band in 1994, and released her first solo album The Captain in 1999; Kasey's dad Bill Chambers also has a solo country career, and tours with his daughter. The other members of the Dead Ringer Band are Karen's mother Diane and her brother Nash. Another up and coming country artist, Beccy Cold provided rhythm guitar, lead and vocals; also occasional drums.

Very good and important statement at the beginning about cellphone filming. So many people feel the need to capture absolutely everything today,
while they forget to actually *experience* something, be *in the moment, enjoy it* . And besides that ... Most of these people film vertically ... which is stupid,
since it never captures the whole stage. Vertical filming cuts off A LOT left and right. And yes, i know what Instagram and TikTok are.
What Kasey Chambers did there with that iconic song was nothing short of phenomenal !
She took it, transformed it, made it her own in a completely different style, but still showed huge respect to the original songwriter.

Em gave her his permission to release on Spotify, that says it all 👏👏👏 She is aged 46 at the time of this performance 2022. I’ve always been a fan of Kasey, she is a freakin amazing & talented musician, artist & woman. But this was next level genius & so personal for her. She has lived every second of this story. The performance wasn’t filmed, she put a post out after the show to fans present to please send in any footage, the compilation of which you see. The band killed it, matching & building with her energy brilliantly. Long time band member Brandon (I think 🤔) on guitar & the vocals that nurtured the momentum & her dad on slide guitar making it sing like a phoenix - all of them together made this one of the all time best live, for me a rebirth, not a cover, that I’ve ever heard, seen & felt….to my core.

Kasey Chambers is an Australian legend (youngest person to be entered into the Australian Music Hall of Fame) who has been beloved but ignored by radio and was shunned by Sony. She's been performing in her father's band since she was 12 years old (her brother is backing vocals and her dad is on the steel guitar on stage here). She had some pop hits in the 90s but her heart and soul is Country in her own style.
She wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this song because she loves Eminem, and she had the time to rearrange and compose this masterpiece during lockdown. She is showing so much emotion because she has lived this to a degree as well. She is now 45 years old and a mother of three.
This recording is the first time it was ever performed live and was done at the end of the concert. They thought it went well, so they used the recording from the sound desk and asked their fans who were in attendance to provide any footage they had to composite this one together. While there has been no public approval from Em, she has been allowed to put this song up on Spotify without challenge.

That was so fun to watch the soundie cogs turning in your brain as the song went on. Like, "ooh interesting voice, got some yodely stuff going on, plus the banjo, I'd mix it this way...", then then the guitar and gorgeous harmonies come in "oooh, new sounds to play with" and then the whole band kicks in with keys and a friggin lap steel no less and I bet you were thinking how fun that would have been to mix! This was super cool reaction! FYI This is what Kasey did during covid lockdowns, super talented country/folk singers apparently re-arrange rap songs when they are confined to their home 🤷😂 That's her dad on he lap steel and brothers on the guitar and keys too by the way. She felt this so hard because she has actually lived these lyrics too, it's not only rappers in trailer parks who know struggle. She's pretty amazing!

The entire performance is a work of art. From Em's lyrics, the band, Kasey's passion and yes, even the grainy phone footage!
It all builds the drama. Eminem made this song iconic, Kasey made it epic.
    G'day from Australia.

Your comment about it grabbing you. Yes, it grabs you and says you are going to feel waves of pain, sadness, and frustration, followed by rage at the unfairness of it all. Everything that Eminem was rapping about.

    Great reaction guys, thanks.
Read a lot about this after researching to see what Kasey's inspiration was behind the performance. Turns out she's long been an Eminem fan and always wanted to do this track. Covid lock-downs provided the opportunity for her to produce what you just watched. I've seen in hundreds of times now I reckon and it never gets old.

Sorry - Eminem did not give his permission.....it's not his to give. He doesn't hold the copyright to any of his early music - including Lose Yourself. The Bass brothers hold the copyright to his music through their Eight Mile Style publishing company & Eminem has no control over what they do.

Another commentator on another reaction described it best. "Kasey has delivered it like the 3 part story it is. Background of despair and anguish of being stuck in a rut... The ramp up of conviction to do something about it... And then the climax of the battle and victory against his plight.
After seeing this you wonder how it could ever have been done differently". Also the brilliance of Eminem's lyrics- the first two verses were (he/his....) and then when the final verse it is all (I ....). Kasey has lived that life.

I normally hate the sound of steel guitar in country and western music, but in a lot of moody Bluegrass it just sounds and feels so different. The lap steel here is played by Bill Chambers, Kasey's dad, and he makes it wail and moan like a fkn banshee.
Years ago a friend showed me a vid she took at a studio session. it was about 10 minutes of Bill and Kasey just having fun, dueling lap steels, and it was mind blowing.

Around the time this came out for Eminem Kasey had a song "Not Pretty Enough" about her struggle as alt country to get airplay. You might like to try her "Ain't no Little Girl", either the music video or live. Kasey grew up with her family band but they were also rabbit and fox hunters on the Nullarbor Plain [think Arizona desert] and it was I suppose like the American Country singers who grew up hard and/or different like Dolly or Loretta. They come with emotions ready to lay out for the audience - and Kasey leaves it all on stage. Thanks for your thoughtful reviews.

    From Kasey's video description....
The video for ‘Lose Yourself’ is thanks to Kasey’s fans in the audience on the final show of her recent Behind The Barricades tour. After much demand from fans to release the live performance and noting so many cameras in the air, Kasey asked fans to send through any footage they had filmed. The result is a perfect time capsule of how a great song, performed authentically from the heart can bring a room of strangers to connect in such a powerful shared emotion

As an Aussie I know and have heard Kaseys songs before but she killed this. The story goes that during the Covid Lockdown she and the band put this together remotely and then played it as the encore at the first couple of live performances which is why there is no official video. I have watched her do it since Newcastle but this version is her best by far. Also what she does to that Banjo I am sure is against the Law. Well done Kasey and well done Jeremy and Jillian on a great reaction.

I hear from many reactors, saying Kasey is anew singer. In fact Kasey has been performing since 1986 in the Dead Ringers Band (38 yrs) with her parents and older brother.
There is a song that Kasey is famous for Not Pretty Enough, written as a question to all the radio stations.
Kasey’s songs were #1 in the charts, but NOT being played on the radio…
