Vitamin C is actually the ascorbate ion. Ascorbic acid is the ascorbate ion paired with a hydrogen ion, so ascorbic acid is only one of a number of forms of vitamin C. Other common forms include sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate, etc. My preferred form is sodium ascorbate crystals I get from Bronson. At the onset of a cold/flu, I take very large doses of sodium ascorbate (usually 25-35 grams on the first day divided into hourly doses, approximately the dosage recommended by Linus Pauling in his book "How to Live Longer and Feel Better") and the cold/flu disappears rapidly. Also in treatment for cancer, the vitamin C used in IV is sodium ascorbate, not ascorbate acid (Cameron and Pauling, 1979, Cancer and Vitamin C).
And you reference more in your comment than many of the presenters here on UA-cam. We already have a like button, why some just comment with idolatry makes me wonder If I'm missing something. 😆
Not sure about the Vit C question , but I do know that VitD3 plus K2 mk7 200mg reduces inflammation as well as a host of other benefits, check Dr Bergs videos on it . It certainly cured my knee pain as I was limping after one month of upping my Vit D 3 I take 20,000 I.u.s, for my body , your body might differ. Good luck 🌸
@@POS3278 Sodium ascorbate crystals dissolve easily and tastes mildly salty, whereas ascorbic acid tastes quite sour. As a hay fever sufferer, I sometimes put the sodium ascorbate solution in a spray bottle and spray into my nostrils (vitamin C is an anti-histamine). I doubt spraying an acid into my nostrils will be comfortable, so I have never tried using ascorbic acid in this role.
And so are many people that never take any vitamin C, nor do they mind what they eat a lot. So it doesn't really mean anything for specific persons, but in general many people might have genetics that require it more. One problem with the ascorbic acid only version is that it competes with the complete vitamin for absorption, and the synthetic one is usually in much larger amounts.
Others, like me, don't have an ancestry DNA that requires or responds positively to high sugar fruits every day. Pineapples strawberries kiwis are all crazy high in sugar. Maybe if you're family history is from a tropical area that makes sense. Otherwise maybe an apple here and there or lemon. Except in the summer months have at it. Almost all dna enjoy that period of high fruit in their diet. Helps to add fiber fiber fiber

YEA I've been saying that on this channel and others. I hope I had a effect on your studying this. Also I like to point out that (again) that Vitamin C inhibits the receptors of OTHER vitamins from being absorbed for up to 2 hours. Which is WORSE for example of taking vitamin B1. If I take the synthetic version of that it will only block the real version of B1. But synthetic vitamin C will block MANY b vitamins plus C. Which is why I think it is put in all kinds of foods.
With every one of Dr Berg's videos I am astounded how much we are misled by meds and otc supplements. WOW there is a lot to be learned. The sad thing is... it's so hard to find everything organic and also expensive.
My genuine gratitude, respect and joy to/for experts like you. My surgeon and endocrinologist saved my life 4 years ago, when a pure stroke of luck lead me into his hands. Successfully removed the tumor. Since then, meticulously monitoring me and educating me every step of the way as to the numerous misconceptions and negligence of others (cannot call them genuine experts) that eventually contributed to tumor growth till I found him. Another stroke of luck is that my mother, when retired, decided to go back to our late grandparents land and live there, in peace, fresh air, spring water and garden plants (all sorts of fruits, vegetables, no artificial 'boosters'). Since than, not a single piece of market product has been brought into our home. Thank you, him and a select few people genuinely devoted to a healthy life. Tumor free. And healthy! Thank you! 🙏♥️
Just came back to review this and Thank you again... This information changed my health dramatically... Managed to avoid going to the dentist and having most of my teeth drilled and filled, and eventually removed. No more loose teeth and bleeding gums... I eat lots of peppers and sauerkraut (raw) and also blend half an organic lemon, blueberry, and Dr Berg's veggie green powder every day both for vitamin c and trace minerals as well as cleansing liver. Lemon is with peel on of course. :)
Thank you for suggesting food to get vitamin C requirements in the body. Most doctors just suggest taking medicine. I love how you explain the material notes and diagrams, and break them down into chunks.
Very informative Dr.Berg. I am actually blown away! as I've been misled with this synthetic form of vitamin C for years. I actually tried your advice on consuming the Whole Lemon - peel, pith, pips and all for a month. I've definitely noticed a difference in my health which I attribute to a more natural form of vitamin C.
Not just C... processed foods and standard grain flour etc are all enriched with synthetic B12 and synthetic folate as man made folic acid... poison to a dirty MTHFR gene metabolism. Dirty Gene's is a great book, enlightenment that matters bigly for a healthy and high quality of life. 60% of Western European's and Hispanics get hit with this. Other human genomes are at about 30%. Functional medicine treats this but pharmaceutical medicine mostly ignores it...other than MTHFR related miscarriages and pregnancy clotting or sugar problems.

Vitamin C is extremely effective in almost any infection, be it viral or bacterial. Only the quantities have to be in grams! Eg 5 grams every 30 minutes. Here I recommend the book "A brief collection of unknown facts about vitamins and minerals" by Dr. Doumenach for those interested. Also great books of Dr Levy on Vit C. Greetings!
I hate that there's so much conflicting, mixed info around the use of ascorbic acid. All the testimonials made me want to try it & I finally caved in after tons of research. I literally have some on the way in the mail as I type this comment LOL. In my research I found that l-ascorbic acid was the form that was more absorbable & usable & raised blood serum levels of vitamin C, so I purchased that form. Was really hard to find a label that specified having l-asorbic acid in the ingredients and no filler. So I wonder if it's a common form and how it differs from the liposomal vitamin C everyone talks about and reccomends on forums. But I wonder if all the testimonials are just placebo effects then? Im still watching this video though so not sure if he addresses it.
I had this problem with my gums splitting. All my doctor would say is "Use mouthwash". I tried everything. Then I watched Dr Bergs video on Vit C. I had been taking ascorbic acid. I switched to natural Vit C and my gums stopped splitting and are healing. I had scurvy.
Vitamin C high dosage main role in the body would be tissue regeneration. It is involved in tendon, bone and skin synthesis. So I would argue that higher dosage does have an important benefit.
At first, I took 500 mg per day of vitamin c but then I saw a yt video about a study made with vitamin c, they took between 2000 and 3000 mg 4 times per day because apparently, the good stuff peaks after 2½ hours in your body (something noone has ever told me) so now I'm eating 2000 mg with every meal so I'm eating between 6000 and 8000 mg per day, and I definitely now see a difference on my skin, it's become more glowing/brown ish making me look more healthy for sure.
@@orion9k I see a huge difference too in my skin and my joints consuming about 1500mg daily from food and supplements. Never consumed those higher doses you talk about, but I definitely see a difference.
High dosage does but the point is where and how it is sourced. The main argument in the video is that synthetic vitamin C through the human manufacturing process is sufficiently less dense and can have trace toxins due to the extraction from corn. Corn is one of the most heavily polluted crops out there and just as food in general loses its nutritional value during processing so can the vitamins not derived from Whole Foods. You may indeed be fine and want a higher dosage but that doesn’t mean your body will absorb it, use it, and excrete it the same way it does with natural/organic (I know there’s a difference but this context should be simple) plants, vegetables, and fruits

From Dr Mercola. Thank you for reaching out to us regarding our Vitamin C product. Vitamin C is commonly found in citrus fruits. Dr. Mercola encourages obtaining these essential vitamins from foods. In the circumstances that one is unable to meet the daily requirements with food alone, a supplement can be used. To obtain 1,000 mg from fruit would require a large amount of raw material and would be extremely expensive, especially to make it into a liposomal product. These reasons would make it an impractical product for most consumers to purchase and use. Our vitamin C is pure ascorbic acid, the only form that exists naturally. It is not a bound with other materials. The ascorbic acid in the Vitamin C is sourced non-GMO corn (from China) and synthesized from glucose via a fermentation process. All of our supplement products are manufactured within the USA. **** MY question: Is this still a good source, is it synthetic?
If you get a consumer lab membership you will find some of mercola's supplements don't contain what is claimed on the label. I don't know if he fixed this or not, as I have not been a member for a few years. BTW, too much fruit is not good for you either. There are other forms of ascorbate such as sodium.
Very sorry to read that. I appreciate Dr Mercola for his work but I have never experienced improvements from synthetic c, being already healthy. Ascorbic acid is only helpful to acidify the stomach if it’s missing acid. Which I’m very careful nowadays not let happen. So ascorbic acid has not helped me. Only homemade sauerkraut did.
I’m glad you didn’t totally demonize ascorbic acid and you said it has its place. I cured hepatitis C with ascorbic acid with rose hips in one day with 1,000 mg every 10-15 minutes until I felt bloated. My bloodwork came back as having antibodies but no active virus.

Ha Doc ive been using vit C for years now, and i use vit c with Calcium Ascorbate , not Ascorbic Acid , is it a safer more beneficial choice , looking forward to your response , Cheers
Glucose turns into vitamin C via enzymes in most animals with the exception of a very few. Humans had that capability as cavemen but lost one of the enzymes. That enzyme loss was likely adaptive because of the food situation back then and lack of storage processes. So man needs to supplement with vit C. Not sure why Berg insinuates that glucose turning into vit c via chemical processes is such a concern. ALL vitamin C made by animals starts as glucose. And there is an excellent source of Non GMO non Chinese Vit C from Ireland I believe. It can be found at the Vit C Foundation.
Bonne Naturel Agree 💯. We humans are just 2 steps short of making our own VitC. Whether ascorbic acid is derived from GMO or non GMO is of no consequence as the genetic material doesn’t get transferred to a pure molecule. Dr. Thomas Lévy & Andrew Saul & many more have cleared that several times.
Thanks doc. I have a super hard time thinking clear most of the time. I appreciate your help. I have adhd so life is can be a hot mess. I just want to think clear and not forget important thing constantly.
Hello Dr. BERG. I was wondering about sodium ascorbate. Is it the same as ascorbate acid in supplements? Also what is your recommendation for dosage? And thank you so much for all the wisdom you share here! :)
Just consume a fresh whole grapefruit (or orange) daily as part of your regimen (half early in day & half later in day). The white pulp in them is also very good for you. Stay away from juices (& supplements) & stick to whole foods in their natural forms.
Not good if you take medications. Maybe every 2- 3days yes. It can also dissolve your teeth enamel. I eat grapefruits and drink water down grapefruit juice with a straw if I want a refreshing drink.

00:50 how do you think plants make the compound? they turn sunlight and CO2 into starches and sugars, which it then uses to feed and do work, those sugars get used up, mostly in the dark period making all the active components, its the same for weed, tomatoes, oranges, it all starts with sugars and co2. The plant is consuming sulphates and different ions, and yeah, end result depends on the plant but you get your product.

I think a lot of the population can and is eager to learn how to take care of ourselves because it is rewarding in every way. But after addictions to junk food and depleted energy from a life time of eating the wrong things, not to mention all the false information on health that is taught to us and unreliable doctors, it can become a big hump to get over. All I mostly ate was processed and synthetic foods, now I find myself having to learn the basics later on in life and I am grateful that my body was able to put up with so much.
I notice no mention of liposomal vitamin c. I take a complex of ascorbyl palmitate, calcium ascorbate, cetyl ascorbate, sunflower lecithin and phosphatidylcholine. Is that considered different and more absorbable in getting the intended benefits of vitamin C vs just ascorbic acid?
I used liposomal vitamin C for ages but when I got ill, I only noticed a benefit when I took 3000mg of quali C powder. Now I no longer bother with liposomal vitamin C. In my experience straight ascorbic acid is superior. This was the same when comparing natural sources of vitamin C too. Ascorbic acid was superior to all of them. I still mix in Camu Camu and Acerola to my shakes though, but I would not rely on that for a viral infection.
@@mreverybody1150 - I agree! 1 gram of Ascorbic acid daily got rid of some pre-cancers (metaplasias) in my stomach that had been there for a decade. It only took 2 months. But Dr. Berg , ascorbic acid is synthesized from glucose by animals that can produce it endogenously, so why would that be an issue? We are just missing the last enzyme L gulunolactone oxidase.

I was researching citric acid it’s in almost everything, I was told it’s not as I assumed from natural fruit and I found that nearly all food soft drinks & meds contain The GM citric acid produced from black mould.
I find this not very convincing on a number of levels. If an anti-oxidant reacts, it is turning into an oxidant per definition (a redox reaction always does ) - the point then being whether it is a strong or weak oxidant. If it's weak, don't worry about it. One could claim the same re any supplement that one normally finds in whole foods - the aforementioned K2 could be dubbed unnatural if synthetic and natural if presented in the form of a 'K2 complex', the way it naturally occurs. So what is valid is that these whole foods or whole supplements offer much more than the mere ascorbic acid aka vit C molecule. But to say that ascoribic acid does not equal vitamin C is not true - it does not equal an orange.
Overall, a majority of animal studies have shown differences in the comparative bioavailability of synthetic versus natural vitamin C, although the results varied depending on the animal model, study design and body compartments measured. In contrast, all steady state comparative bioavailability studies in humans have shown no differences between synthetic and natural vitamin C, regardless of the subject population, study design or intervention used. Some pharmacokinetic studies in humans have shown transient and small comparative differences between synthetic and natural vitamin C, although these differences are likely to have minimal physiological impact.
I used to get pnemonia every year and was put on antibiotics; eventually very high doses. Then, a new doctor refused to give me antibiotics saying they would not work when I got older if I kept taking these doses. He put me on vitamin C only. I did this evey year for about 5 years and then, I no longer got pnemonia. It just went away. The doses was crazy...and will sound crazy...but I had a stubborn strain and needed mega doses: 1,000ml every 15 minutes...all day long. Extreme...but that was what I needed - and it worked! Vitamin C is water soluable so if there is too much in your system, it leaves your body:)
Another lesser known fact is that iron is needed as a catalyst for it be the powerful antioxidant that it is. People low in iron don't benefit the same..
Dr. Berg, just to clarify: the distinction is not different kinds of vit. C; it is vit. C v vit. C Complex. Synthetic vitamin C, while identical to natural vitamin C, is incapable of doing the work of vitamin C as found in the vitamin C complex; the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the complex works synergistically with the complex's components. The study yet to be done to confirm whether the synthetic is able to synergize with the complex is the following: Group A--control group; no dietary modification, just observation. Group B--ascorbic acid supplementation only. Group C--vitamin C complex only (no additional separate ascorbic acid). Group D--vitamin C complex with the addition of ascorbic acid. Group E--placebo. Considerations for the study design includes dosages (how much is too much, too little), form (tablets, powders, etc.), frequency, and duration of the study. Do note that while pharmaceutical companies will spend billions on research of potentially profitable non-biological drugs, they have zero incentive to prepare a comprehensive research study such as this, as the nutrients cannot be patented and therefore will not generate the kind of profits the industry demands. It will take government-sponsored facilities to conduct the research; as the FDA and USDA are currently in the pockets of the industry lobbyists, good luck with that!

The effect of ascorbic acid on colds has not much to do with its being acidic. When I have a cold, I make myself sodium ascorbate by mixing ascorbic acid powder and bicarbonate powder (4:1 by volume) in water. And despite having pH about 7 this has a good effect on my cold.
What about liposomal vitamin C, does that get absorbed any better? I have plenty of anecdotal evidence from my "circle" that it really seems to lessen or stop cold like symptoms. Good video, cheers.

Bell peppers are carbohydrates (sugars). If the body can't judge the difference between sugar and vitamin C then your body will prefer the sugar over the vitamin. scurvy was one of the first things found to be helped by vitamin C (Casimir Funk in 1912 named it antiscorbutic), but while effective [then], there was many things still yet to discover about the interactions + deficiencies in our common diets. in the second linked article :: .. Later, it was discovered that ascorbate (the reduced form of vitamin C) and dehydroascorbic acid are taken up by separate mechanisms in the intestine and that uptake of ascorbate is sodium dependent [18]. .. which is of course linked to wound healing (healthy natural mineral salts). always have your foods fresh / diverse / when possible. ascorbic acid can be therapeutic when there are fresh berries or citrus shortages. IV administration has been something we have wanted to explore at FWC, but fresh foods have shown to provide better health outcomes since the late 1970s vs any powdered or tablet forms we studied.
What if I use the cheap tablets in my home made fermented chili sauces? I start with 2 grams bicarb disolved in water. I then add 1 gram of crushed tablets. After the reaction I add 200ml vinegar. This would then get blended with the sauce and aids in colour preservation and food stability/shelf life. I bottle at around a PH of 3.6. With the vit c tablets, I keep that vibrant red colour even after a year on the shelf. With no vit c, the moment you open the bottle of a long fermented sauce. lets say about 18 months old, it turns brown rather than staying bright red. For Vit C for my body I start the day with 3 ounces of lemon juice mixed with a liter of water.

Good luck 🌸
Isn't that a lot of Sodium (natrium) ions?
Why is this your preferred?

Hi vitamin C supplements are hands down the best!

Here I recommend the book "A brief collection of unknown facts about vitamins and minerals" by Dr. Doumenach for those interested. Also great books of Dr Levy on Vit C. Greetings!
I may confirm. I overcome Covid taking huge amounts of vitamin C. Almost 45 grams a day.
You mean Ascorbic Acid?
@@bettyshar9998 yes, simple Ascorbic acid.
5 g every 30 minutes...do you think it's natural??? Any time in our evolution we have been doing so? Our body are used to this habit?

What forms of natural vitamin c
@@SeriouSXXFireworks Dr Berg mentioned sauerkraut as being some of the most efficient form of vitamin c because it’s very high.
What kind did Paul Linus use? And he said your liver needs 3000 mg daily just for normal function.

What about Liposomal Vit C??? Is this a better form to be taking???
It increases absorption
Love your videos...easy to understand and right to the point. 👍
Wow that's good is it the Kirkland brand?

Glucose turns into vitamin C via enzymes in most animals with the exception of a very few. Humans had that capability as cavemen but lost one of the enzymes. That enzyme loss was likely adaptive because of the food situation back then and lack of storage processes. So man needs to supplement with vit C. Not sure why Berg insinuates that glucose turning into vit c via chemical processes is such a concern. ALL vitamin C made by animals starts as glucose. And there is an excellent source of Non GMO non Chinese Vit C from Ireland I believe. It can be found at the Vit C Foundation.
Bonne Naturel
Agree 💯.

The research was Chinese and said that it had to dissolve in your stomach, so you don't want buffered or time release, just the cheap stuff.

I was researching citric acid it’s in almost everything, I was told it’s not as I assumed from natural fruit and I found that nearly all food soft drinks & meds contain The GM citric acid produced from black mould.
Yep, it's nasty stuff and can wreak havoc on one's digestive system. It's basically a synthetic chemical.
A think he’s got fake tan on 🙄

50 liters a a Day?
@@dylan3657 obviously it was meant to be 1000mg every 15 minutes. When I'm sick I take 2 grams every 20 minutes and that works.
Sipping on warm lemon water now. My first drink every morning during my fasting period.😊
The study yet to be done to confirm whether the synthetic is able to synergize with the complex is the following:
Group A--control group; no dietary modification, just observation.
Just take natural vitamin c, problem solved. Either way anything from China is pure garbage.
vitamin C is the most hated vitamin by the medical industry. it could wipe their many businesses like cardiovascular diseaaes cancer infectious diseases pain management....
Andrew Saul PhD is the expert on vit c. Ortho molecular medicine lots of research showing it does work in high doses. I’ve taken high doses when ill and it works well.
High doses of what particular vit c?
This is why I literally eat a WHOLE LEMON: peel and all. Freeze a bag of lemons, take one out the freezer, grate it, put the gratings in a cup, add three or four cups of water then add honey to dull the bitterness. It’s a Vit. C bomb.
That's an interesting idea...
Lemon skin is full of pesticides, avoid eating it unless you grown it.
Honey is sugar. Dr. Berg just stated sugar inhibits absorption of vitamin C.
Good idea! Do you eat a whole lemon everyday? Do you drink the 3-4 cups a day of the grated lemon a day or spread it out over a few days? Thanks for the tip!
hi take 5/6 whole lemons, cut them into small chunks and put them in the freezer..(i cut up 20 lemons for the month put them in a freezer bag and freez them when you want take a couple of cups of freezin lemons out,... put them in the blender make a slush. take 2 tablespoons put the rest in the fridge will last over a week.. and so much easier to take.. put in mouth and swallow..easy!!!
Precious scientific information by Dr.Berg. So useful for people...
You're so great 🙂 anytime I'm questioning info I'm reading, I come see if you have a video on it. I don't have to wonder if your supplements are high quality or if they work. I had bacterial meningitis and was very sick and in the hospital for months and all the antibiotics and everything just ruined everything about eating and digestion. I went strict GF and low fodmap, no sugar at all for over a year along with other things to balance my gut and heal the stomach lining and replacing good bacteria, etc. No prescriptions. I'm happy to say that I'm almost back to normal and trying to maintain what is "fixed" while I figure out the last couple of issues and your information has really helped me SO much. I just ordered your vitamin C and adrenal support and don't have to question the quality so thank you 😊
That's wonderful! Thanks for your support - I'm so glad to help.
Dr. Berg, I'm planning to buy the Vit. C that you show us, but I noticed that it composed a lot of sugar like, Erythritol, Cellulose, Xanthan gum, Stevia, Monk fruit extract that can become fructose when it digest. Enlighten me. Thanks

Dr. Oz really made a mistake by not having you on his show. You are a treasure on this earth.
Do you mean that FAKE doc trying to run for Senate of Pa?
The effect of ascorbic acid on colds has not much to do with its being acidic. When I have a cold, I make myself sodium ascorbate by mixing ascorbic acid powder and bicarbonate powder (4:1 by volume) in water.
And despite having pH about 7 this has a good effect on my cold.
Hi Doctor ! You are the best !♥️♥️
What about liposomal vitamin C, does that get absorbed any better? I have plenty of anecdotal evidence from my "circle" that it really seems to lessen or stop cold like symptoms. Good video, cheers.
What are your thoughts on NAC or NAC+ would love to hear your opinion?
If you search his name and nac, you will find at least one video. Possibly easier to find on his website.
@@healthyketoexperiment7964 thanks 👍
@@pauliboi9976 Welcome.
In my family we just consume red bell peppers and/or deep green salads and berries and problem is solved! Thanks Dr Berg, always looking forward to your videos backed by intense research and great common sense! God bless! 🌶️🥦🥒🍓🍒
I like those also! I mainly get my C from kiwii...yummy.
Your problem will not be solved. The RDA is grossly under estimated.
Bell peppers are carbohydrates (sugars). If the body can't judge the difference between sugar and vitamin C then your body will prefer the sugar over the vitamin. I'm just being facetious because I honestly don't think the body is so stupid it cannot tell the difference between glucose and vitamin C. That's got to be a myth.
🍊
If the Bell peppers are not organic, you're getting a big dose of pesticide poison in them.
Camu Camu is also high in vitamin C. I think I'll take some of mines and put it in capsules and take those.😊
It can burn your tummy if you take it straight :)

Love it, chiropractors rule, thanks doc!
Love the ways of your sounds, expertise, the way you explaining, the voices. It’s calming it’s not forcing. Certainly not irritating in my ear 🙏 Because some other it’s sooo irritating that I must stop watching the video. Thank you 🙏
scurvy was one of the first things found to be helped by vitamin C (Casimir Funk in 1912 named it antiscorbutic), but while effective [then], there was many things still yet to discover about the interactions + deficiencies in our common diets.
in the second linked article ::
..
There had been hundreds of studies going way back that ascorbic acid has many benefits so I really don’t know what he’s talking about
You are right on! Thank you for the work you do.
You are very welcome.

Thank you for being so open.
