I always ask the tire people to not to tighten my lugs with the machines because I have been stuck with nuts I couldn't get off. I forgot the last time and again they are stuck. I watched your video and presto the pipe worked like a charm. I am a seasoned woman of 69, I just love your ideas. Thank you.
Thank you for this! My dad used to change my wheels over to winter rims every year; he recently passed away and I couldn't remember the trick he used to get the lug nuts off. That pipe trick is so simple and perfect.
Thanks Scotty!
I used a metal pole I had for leverage and it worked easily!
I'm a 58 year old woman! feeling powerful!
58 and a beatiful one :D
After bending and destroying the metal pipe, I finally just drove it to the shop on the flat.
Not only are your videos informative and to the point with an upbeat delivery, you seem like a genuinely nice guy.
you honestly don't know how much you saved my life just now thank you for showing the pipe technique I was stranded at work with a nail in my tire and couldn't get the buts loose thank u so much Scotty ! you're the man !!
1. Put the wrench on the stuck nut at 3 o'clock.
2. Use your car's jack to lift the wrench handle.
3. Eventually the weight of the car will turn the wrench.
Omg that’s the smartest thing I’ve seen all year 😳😲
I tried this and my car exploded
Now, that's smart! I never thought about doing that.
That's smart but isn't kinda hard to do with the rest of the nuts ? I mean you can probably do it with 1-2 nuts but the rest won't be in a good posiotion to do so.
Yeah, but I have that cheap car jack that came with the car that you have to twist it
I am a 43 yo woman who tried to change my tire when I was 21 and ended in disaster and my father blowing up & telling me to just call a man for help, never thought I could but you just helped me change that. Thanks for your help and giving this momma confidence in herself that she needed desperately.
I actually went to school with a crazy canadian lumberjack in toronto, and he was a really nice down to earth guy. Like most canadians I've ever met. Really, if the world was full of Canadians it would be a much better place. Plus hockey games would be much higher quality.
It's just a shame they're boring af
Great Tip!!
Couldn't get the nuts of my daughters wheel to change a flat tyre, admitted defeat and called the breakdown service to do it but they wanted over £100 to cone out and do the job as the car was outside her home........then found this video.......found a pipe....job done and £100 saved.
Hey Scotty I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my life so much easier with this video. My tire popped at 3:30 am on the south side of Chicago. I tried hard to lossen the bolts using a nug wrench with my arms and after seeing you jump on it, I tried it myself and within the first jump they loosened. just happy to say I made it back home. Thank you again scotty🙏. You really helped me out!
Help me and my cousin a lot today! That leverage advice worked like a charm! Me and him tugged at that lug for almost an hour . Clicked on your video and had the lug off in 5 seconds ! Thanks !
You the man. After struggling for over an hour with the stock tire iron I came to UA-cam for help and saw ur video. Then took ur advice and found a metal pipe and the nuts came off like butter. Thank you so much. Now a subscriber and a big fan :)
+Ash007 glad to hear it, thanks!
Now I'm worried that my neighbor, who stole my lawnmower is going to take my brand new mag wheels.
This video just saved my life. My first time EVER changing a tire! Many many thanks to you.
Nobody has a huge steel pipe laying around
Exactly what I was gonna say.. 🙄
You’re suppose to go find one.
That’s not what she said
Thank you for posting this! As a guy with zero mechanical aptitude, this was very helpful.
12 years later still the most useful video on youtube, I watch this every time I get a flat.
Boy, and here I was going to get a set of wheel locks (or lugnut locks, etc) but then I saw how easy it was for someone without the key to get it off. Lot of good those do.
Hi Scotty! Can't thank you enough for this informative and enjoyable video: I barely got two lugnuts off my winter tires before watching your video yesterday. Armed with your knowledge, I got a 3/4" x 36" steel pipe at the hardware store today, and the lugnuts came off like butter with arm strength! I successfully changed over all four of my winter tires and I'm now ready for the summer! Thank you!
"With a long enough lever, hey, you could even move the whole earth!" You are the man Scotty! Enjoy all your videos, which are very informative and done with a great sense of excuberance.
The problem was, there is no firm spot!
Great powder puff mechanical help, Scotty. I've been doing that since I was a teen. Common sense. Some people are just ignorant about this kinda stuff. The tire guy once used his air wrench on my lug bolts so tight, I had to stand on the lug tool and jump on it with 200 lbs. Of my weight. Once out I found them all stripped! MAKE SURE THESE NUCKLE HEADS ONLY TORQUE YOU NUTS TO SPECKS! OR YOU'LL END UP BUYING NEW LUGS BOLTS OR A NEW WHEEL HUB.
I have every power tool known to man, BUT most guys don't, and this video is to help DIYs do it yourself, so I use the cave man approach in this video.
Scotty u are a godsend for diy people like myself thank you for your service
Thank you! I had a flat tire, and I could NOT get those lug nuts loose. I had never changed a tire before, and you saved me with the metal pipe trick! Worked like a charm.
who has a pipe on the side of the highway
Keep one in the trunk. Now you know.
me too
Use a highway sign pipe
Use the car's own jack.
Found a metal pipe three years ago and never drive anywhere without it. That thing saved me plenty of times
Did brakes on my neighbor's Mazda 3, had stuck lugs and once the lug nuts were removed the alum.wheel was stuck to the hub! still couldn't get the rear tires off.we left the nuts slightly loose and drove it in a tight circle in two directions to finally get them both loose. The other neighbors now think WE'RE nuts. They made a pretty loud POP when finally coming off the hub. PITA! Hope this helps someone out.
As always Scotty, your videos are great!
how could you not love this guy? great work my man
Grow up Joshua
Thanks so much Scotty! I found a pipe at a garbage drop off area just a few meters from where my car was parked and used it for extra leverage. I won’t be forgetting that trick for the rest of my life 🙏🏻
I hate when tire shops over tighten lug nuts.. I've had a tire shop break one of my lug nuts by using one of air impact guns... I cringe when I see a tire shop tightening a lug nut that only needs 80-90ft lbs with a 500ft lbs impact gun.
Anthony thats why we use torque sticks on the guns which stop the gun from going above the listed torque.
You dont need an impact to shear a stud. I did it with a tire iron
The studs would shear off with that kind of torque. They use torque sticks that limit the torque.
I think the highest rating of torque for an impact gun is like 125ft-lb of torque
Well, I'm trying to take off nuts on a wheel that has only been on for under 1 year. I've tried various impact guns and most are still stuck. 1 is even an electric gun with over 1,000#'s and they're still stuck.
The extra leverage did the trick for me. The lug nuts were on so tightly I thought I was missing a lock or something. Thanks!
I was sweating like a pig trying to take off my lung nuts, thanks again Scotty for your great tips and advise :-)
same
Thank you!! This really helped in a pinch. Dark cold night, flat tire and a stubborn lug nut. The foot trick worked!!
Just bought a new wheels and i feel worried now...
You probably want to get the type of wheel locks that have a free spinning cap.
Finally I don’t ever have to jump on a wrench now to unloosen nuts now. The pipe method gives me so much leverage even the tightest nut. Thanks >
2 hours of trying to get it off and it took a couple seconds as soon as we watched you’re video
Glad to hear it, thanks for the support!
Scotty u are amazing. I couldn’t get these lug nuts for my life but I ended up using half of the floor jacks handle and it worked perfectly
..and in the news today, recent thefts of wheels even with wheel locks has increased by 20%.
Brother, please accept a big digital hug from me. From the heart. after wasting 32 dollars on a breaker bar that didnt work worth a crap, I used a black pipe with the regular tool that came with the car and Viola!!!!!!! Dammit i love you!!!
yes, I agree, all modern tires are radial anyway, so they don't wear like old round bias ply tires do.
I can’t believe I never would’ve thought of using my feet. That’s genius. Thank you for the help.
fuck that pipe idea was a life saver. lol. took the pipe of the floor jack and worked like a charm. thanks for the Video 👍
thank you
literally just did the same thing, thanks scotty
Mike Murphy wtf thats so funny i just did that lol
Thanks for the comment! It never occurred me. I was tempted to go buy a 3 foot pipe but it never crossed my mind that I could just use my floorjack handle. DAMN!
Yea I was straight tryna open my shit with a socket wrench helped alot
This archimedes technique helped me to change my car's punctured tyre...your video was very helpful...much appreciated 👏
Scotty Kilmer should be everybody's first option for do-it-yourself car projects. He has a video for everything, make him go viral!
Let's make him go mainstream
The pipe trick removed my stuck lug nut easily! Thanks Scotty!
use the likely included jack to lift the tire iron, turning it counterclockwise
Wanna say a big thank you, you helped me pry off my mother in law's lug nuts they put on with a power tool. Her 200lbs or so came in very handy stepping on the lug wrench :)
Thanks for letting me know where to find that wheel lock remover, Now i can steal some nice wheels Thanks!
Your world? Is that the land of welfare and crack cocaine? If it is, maybe you should just come to my world, see over here we got food, lights and your parents raise you instead of yo granmammy or the state. We also goto school here in my world, its a magical place where you learn to read and do math, you prob wouldn't like it.
Shocker CK I believe you're sick
honkeykillaAK47
I JUST NOTICED YOUR SCREEN NAME.
Thank you for showing trick with a leg ! I am literally changing tire at this moment , you are legend 👏
arent lugnuts supposed to be torqued to the manufacturers lb/ft spec? why must folks blast them on with an impact gun? why pay a professional at all if they do it the wrong way?
DangerDaveFreestyle because it take time to torque it down with a torque wrench and torque sticks
A lot do it the right way but people expect cars out in 5 minutes so they don't like the dealerships because it takes to long to do it the right way so and take there cars to the cheapest place like Jiffy Lube or Walmart because its fast. What do you expect after taking there and you realize they did a bad job. What do you want for a $20 dollar oil change. Cheap customer Cheap service.
I’ve been pulling wrenches for 15 years or so....what I appreciate most about your channel is that the videos show the important points in about 5 mins. Great for someone in a hurry
Of course I'm right, and anyway, one should not get too carried away with physics when fixing cars, as it's not theoretical, it's everyday practice and repair. Don't know how many guys I've met who talked a big talk about fixing things, but really couldnt' even change their own oil without breaking something.
You saved our marriage with this tip! Thank you so much!!!! Many hugs!
So this is the answer to "When are we ever going to use rotational physics in the real world?"
Thank you. I only weigh 100 lbs so even my leg strength was no match for those lug nuts, but the pipe worked! Your video saved me so much frustration. I somehow did happen to have a random pipe to use and now it’s in my trunk.
To everyone saying that your lugnuts snapped off with the long pipe technique. Don't yank or pull the damn thing so hard. Gradually build pressure until they move . It's a BREAKER Bar not a goddamn ratchet. Slow and steady
May work; may not.
Theodore Zuckerman - The lugs shouldn't overtorqued in the first place.
A big thank you to you, Scotty! Using the pipe did the trick for me - even for a 65 year old woman like myself!
Yeah? I just twisted my tire iron with a leverage bar. Got any more Brilliant Brain Buster ideas?
You’re doin the Lord’s work, Mr. Kilmer. Thanks
Costco tire guy called and could not remove one of my lug nuts for my 2001 Honda Accord due to metal shaving or some sort. They said they had to break the lug nut but I said no. I want to go back to my mechanic first. Any advise? Maybe I should try long pipe first but I don't have one.
+James Chuaycham go buy a long pipe and some WD 40 to spray on the lug nuts
+Scotty Kilmer I tried with the pipe and liquid wrench but after 2 rotations (it seems to keep turning but probably cut or eat into metal of the bolt?). I stopped b/c I was afraid it might break the bolt if I kept turning counter clock wise.. Should I keep turning the pipe a few more times?

That puzzle lock is the bane of my existence right now. I have the key but it won't budge and I think I have actually stripped it actually. I am glad I decided to a mock tire change.
The long pipe did the trick. Thank you Scotty. You're my savior and you're awesome & funny.
Your video helped me get two lug nuts loose on the roadside after a blowout! Tyre successfully replaced. Thank you!
Changed my first tire today for the first time. I always call roadside assistance but it would cost me 80 bucks for them to come out because my coverage lapsed. I said srew it and changed it myself with the help of your video. Thanks for saving me money.
Thank you Scott.I had trouble removing the lug nuts on my tire and used my legs. You saved me having to call roadside service.Thank you so much.
the pipe hack totally worked.. can't thank you enough.. thanks!
Omg so awesome!!! I still had a 25" long scrap piece of chain link fencing top rail pipe laying around and it fit right over the lug nut key and it's so easy to use it to remove the lug nuts now!! You saved my day, God bless you!🙂 I will keep that piece of pipe in my car.
Hey Scotty, you saved my life. I live in the middle of nowhere so I am dependent on my car. Thought I would not be able to get to work but thanks to you and a metal bar I found in the garage I am back on the road again!

This just worked for us. Thanks for still being a real one after 11 years 👌
40 years ago I worked on a used car lot. Customer wanted to keep the tires from his old car & swap to newer car. Lug nuts were TIGHT! Used my 4-way lug wrench, really cranked. Twisted wrench 180 degrees! (I'm a pretty big guy.) Nut never turned. We made him take the car to where he bought the tires. They broke several wheel studs on the job.
Thank you so much I got my brothers rounded lug nut off with the help of the universal lug nut remover set. I got it at harbor freight. Thank you so much! Also enjoyed the laugh! ❤
Thank you Scotty! Using a pipe actually works but be careful. It might actually give you too much power. I actually broke the bolt off using the metal pipe technique. Twisted it right off.
Just wanted to say thank you. After I got a flat, I spent a couple hours fighting the darn lugnuts trying to get even 1 to pop. I figured the guy who put them on had to be twice my size and green. Ended up breaking my tire iron on one when I balanced my entire weight on the thing to try and pop it, and it was still snuggly attatched.
That Archimedes trick worked exceptionally well though, after I got a new tire iron. I refuse to take a car to a mechanic just to take off a tire. I should be able to pop one on the side of the road should I get stranded, and now I ride with a yard long pole in my trunk along side my tool chest. Thanks for the tip!

Scotty, I know I'm 6 years too late for commenting, but tonight I just had a flat, and not having the physical strength, I paid a guy on the street to help me get stuck lug nuts off of my '14 Camry SE. He did exactly what you did at 1:01. Being that all of my tires are from the factory (4 years old and unevenly worn from the previous owner (lease)), I just had them all replaced. But sitting in the Toyota dealership (Team Toyota of Langhorne, PA), I got to thinking that standing on the tire iron might accidentally have bent or stripped the studs. Seeing you do it makes me feel a lot better!
This guys is a genius and a blessing... I was angry and stressed because I couldn’t get my wheel off but now after watching this guy im all 😁😁🤾🏿♂️🤾🏿♂️🤾🏿♂️
Thank you! This helped me last night - middle of nyc - came back from party to a flat! First time changing a flat and the bolts were jammed. This vid saved my night! Thank you!
thanks for reminding me about needing leverage for lug nuts. had a horrible time getting my lug nuts off till I found a long metal bar to stick on the end and it finally losened. Just wanted to say thanks.
It worked!! It really worked, tried the long pipe, had tried all of my weight with my foot and wouldn't budge, you saved me time and money, man. I thank you!!
I carry a fairly short pipe that'll fit in my wheel well and keep a long pipe at home. I can change into my snow tires in less time than it takes me to drive to the shop and I'm a small 58 year old woman. I was looking for a good UA-cam video to explain to others how to loosen lug nuts and this is perfect
Gotta be careful when torquing lug nuts on with a tire iron. Easily will shear the lug stud. Now that I've learned how to do it I know it's an easy fix but a torque wrench is always best so you know it's being torqued properly
you helped me. was just about ready to join AAA and get it towed to a mechanic with a power wrench. big thanks!
Thanks Scotty! I'm a 108 lb girl and thanks to your video I was able to get my lugnuts off my car!
Lead Pipe trick worked like a champ. Lifesaver. Thank you.
If you don't have a 5' bar on the side of the highway, simply drive the car in the direction needed to break the bolt free. Don't forget to not have it on a jack, keep all the other bolts tight, and be mindful the direction of travel will have on the bolt. =)
Wow, just you saying that, Scotty, makes me have so much more respect for you. Not everyone is like that. And that just proves how strong a person you are. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos...
leverage! outstanding! didn’t have a metal pipe but i had a 3” PVC pipe. i just knew it wasn’t going to work! boy was i wrong. The nuts loosen right up! this video was spot on! thanks for sharing.
Scotty, Your neighbors must hate you almost as much as mine. I love the burnout intro over multiple sets of tire marks.... Keep up the great videos!
Thank you! I found an old pipe and finally got it off! Great teacher!
11 years later and I needed to see this video :) thanks !!
In the parking lot picking my kid up from gymnastics, noticed a flat, could not for my life loosen the lug nuts. Watched this and now on the way to ice cream. Thanks!!
I watched this video on the side of the road after failing to strong arm my lug nuts off. Standing on it did the trick and I got the spare on. Thanks!
The long pipe worked for us! Thanks Scotty
I’ve used that pipe trick many times. Works beautifully.
Thank you scotty you just saved me on the high way i couldnt turn it with my hands so i did the foot method like this video and it worked i can now travel safely back home 50km to my home
Whew, I have an engineering degree and still I couldn't think of a way using anything I had lying around the house to increase the torque so I could get the nut off. You saved me A LOT of trouble.
Thank you very much. I am paraplegic and wheelchair bound and trying to remove the lug nuts with the factory provided tire wrench was impossible by myself. Thankfully I watched your video and your most excellent advise of using a pipe came in very handy! I was able to loosen the nuts and change my tire! TYVM!
hey, you don't give up. good on ya. And, If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every Saturday morning at 10 AM CST on UA-cam. I answer your car questions LIVE there. Great advice! Especially the “cheater bar” for added leverage. I watch my drillers use that technique all the time in the field. Can’t believe I didn’t think of of utilizing that. Thanks again!
You saved me with the metal pipe suggestion. I've used it for several tight nut situations so far. A metal pipe is a great investment for problem solving.
Thanks!
I just wanted to let you know that you saved me a whole lotta hassle by showing that reverse thread removal tool. I was prepared to weld another nut onto my rounded lug nut until I found your video. Thanks! By the way, I love that Stingray!
Genius! Thank you for that tip on the Long pipe and jacking the car after loosening the nuts. Brilliant
