3 Ways to Remove a Stripped Lug Nut

  • A tire shop had rotated my tires and installed them back on my SUV with an impact wrench. The impact wrench torqued on the lug nuts overly tight. When I used my tire iron to remove the lug nut, it completely stripped the lug. The chrome finish on the lug nut was also removed, causing the lug nut to rust.
What can a car owner do to remove the stripped lug nut? I will so you 3 methods to remove the lug nut. The 3 methods are listed below:
Method #1: Use a cold chisel
    - First punch downward with the chisel to create a groove to "catch" the lug nut
    - Then turn the chisel sideways about 45 degrees and punch counter-clockwise.
Cons - Chisel can slip and damage rims
Method #2: Use a common 12-point socket wrench
    - Use a slightly smaller socket then your lug nut
    - Hammer the 12-point socket onto the lug nut until it's firmly seated
    - Use a socket wrench to turn the 12-point socket
Cons - The 12-point socket wrench will likely be destroyed after hammering onto the stripped lug nut.
Method #3: Use a bolt extractor
    - Hammer the bolt extractor socket onto the lug nut until it's firmly seated
    - Use a socket wrench to turn the bolt extractor socket
Cons - one time cost to purchase socket
I highly recommend method #3 using the bolt extractor. It's a lot less likely to damage your rims and you can use the extractor many times over if you have other stripped lug nuts. It's not a very expensive investment.

The second way with the socket worked perfectly for me. Thankfully I had like 6 of that size so ruining one wasn't a problem. I banged it on with a heavy hammer 3 whacks it was on. The lug came off so easy. 12 point socket for the win. To get it off I used vice grips on the socket and just pulled straight out. Thanks for the video very helpful.

For anyone who has these type of lug nuts, they are just a cap on top of the real lug nut and are hollow on the inside. If you take a flat head screwdriver and hammer it in the center, you can make a hole and wiggle it around a bit. Take some needle nose pliers and peel back the cap, then you’ll see the real lug nut and can pull it off no problem since that part isn’t stripped.

HEY GUYS!! one thing that also worked for me yesterday is copper! in construction when a tapcon (aka concrete screw) is too small for its hole we strip a wire and use the copper strands to put in the hole and it basically fills the voids.SAME PRINCIPLE HERE!! find a wire u dont really need, strip it, put the bare copper strands inside your wrench, then put the wrench on the nut and SLOWLY torque it. may take some tries but it works!!

Thanks. I have three dodge caravans in the family and each one has had at least one bad lug nut over the years. Mine have the chrome bubble out so i can’t get the socket on it. Are they rusting from the inside out? I always use method #2 but i don’t need a smaller size socket since the nut is already bigger. $2 or $3 for a new lug nut at the auto parts store and take bets on which one will be bad next time i take the wheel off .

A regular 6 point socket will work for this rounded bolt which WAS caused by overtorquing with impact gun which it just the shell no biggie happens a lot just hammer it on to the rounded bolt and I wiggle the socket around the bolt to get it back to normal size and it's good again

One easy way to avoid it is to get rid of those things before they can cause a problem. A local tire shop not far from my house has good solid ones with a chrome plating that look good. They are also just a dollar each. That was the best 20 dollars I ever spent on that car. You also have the piece of mind knowing those awful things will never bother you again. My next car was a 2002 Neon and it had those on it too. I got rid of those two piece lug nuts first chance I had for the same things I got on the last car for a dollar each.

Extractor, I mean "wheel-extractor-lug-nut bolt" did magic without going into an auto shop or car dealer for that no likely or dealer, even tow?" that can cost us at least $40 or more bucks! Ths 4 sharing with us. Never even considered using chisel, but I might have brough "12-point" socket" that might do before resorting to Tire lug nut "extractor!" USA

Can't tell you how pissed off I feel . Had a puncture last week and had to call a tyre fitter out to get the wheel off and put a new tyre on but at least he put them on so I could get them off . It's a nightmare if it happens when your out on the road . Your stuck big style .

    1. lug is welded to the goddamn stud.
    2. The gag is on me and reverse threaded studs were put in place ;)
I bent a tire iron, snapped a 1/2” 3 foot solid steel breaker bar, and tried every type of stud remover, soaked down for a week in penetrator oil, heated, everything.

I had this issue also. Same car. I inserted a piece of plumber’s tape within a 6 point socket, hammering it onto the lug nut until it bottoms out, and removed the lug nut successfully. This was after I spent over $22 for a special socket that failed to remove the lug nut. Plumber’s tape is very inexpensive.

Took my car to the dealer every six months for tire rotation for six years. Apparently, they over torqued on the last visit. Major problem when getting new tires. Should’ve watched this video.

This works for very easy to remove lug nuts. If the lug is really seized on there you will speak a wrench before you break it free.
I had to put a monkey wrench on the outside of the extractor socket with an extension for torque to get mine off. For one of them that was not even enough. I am currently chiseling it off. I'll let you know when it's done. 😂

You just saved my whole day and possibly a tow in an unexpected flat situation

A bolt extractor, it's so simple. I hope it works on mine, I replaced 3 of 4 of the tires on my Jeep thanks to a stripped lug nut. I was so mad... It was the last nut of the last tire and it completely stopped my work.
