Here's another tip. Don't put the plastic cover back. Try putting on the charger to make sure it's able to charge first. If it's not able to charge, it means the battery contact is not placed correctly.
I did the same, even did not read before. As electrician)) after that my sensor tried to word weird. But after that, I resetted earbuds in cradle. Now it works fine at last. My previous battery leaked....😢
This is great! Thanks for this. I tried bringing my pair to the Sony service centre when the battery life was showing signs of age and their response was that they are unable to change the battery and encouraged me to buy a new pair! I'm going to change it myself now!
Thank you so much for this video! Because of your instructions, I was able to fix my earbuds! Would have been such a shame to throw out some pretty expensive buds after just 2 years of usage, just because of the batteries. Thanks for helping us be more resourceful and reduce electronic waste! 💚
Excellent guide. Picked up a dead pair of thse for 20 euros, ordered replacement batteries and folowed your guide, no I have a new set of earbuds. Thank You.
Great video and instructions! I was very disappointed as I thought my set was slowly dying. And I was about to buy another make just when I discovered your video. I bought the recommended tool set and followed your steps. Everything worked out perfectly. You literally saved me from throwing my XM3's away. Thank you so much for that! Greetings from Germany.
This tutorial really worked for me. I ordered the Zeni battery on Ebay for $25 usd, followed this guide and earbuds feel like new. Saved me the money and not to mention e-waste of buying a new pair. Cheers!
Absolutely great video complete with your little bungles. Thanks so much for posting. My XM3's are only getting about one hour of battery life and I was going to have to buy a new set. But you just saved me a ton of money and as a pensioner I am most grateful. Thumbs up most definitely.
You are a life savior! I was so sad because mine were slowly dying and I didn't wanted to just throw away an electronic that still work just for the stupid batteries.

watching your clip and successfully changed my battery. It works great and all I wanna say is thank you very much for your tutorial. Really appreciate that
Thanks a lot mate. I've finally fixed my right earbud on the second attempt. The battery replacement wasn't hard; you just have to place the battery accurately and test the charge before closing the cap to make it work. That's what I missed on the first attempt. However, the removal of the outer cap was the most difficult job in my case. I was lucky enough to pry the cap from the opposite end of the ear indicator without knowing the double tape (the black circle part) on top of the flexible PCB (brown ribbon) had been stuck to the inner side of the outer cap. If the prying job was done on the ear indicator/brown ribbon's side, the brown ribbon is going to be teared into half for sure, and there would be another 100 bucks wasted. So here are two pieces of advice for all future viewers. The first is to pry the outer cap ONLY from the side WITHOUT the L & R ear indicators; that indicated side is the end where the flexible PCB (brown ribbon) grows out from; make sure you do not open from that side. The second is to put your earbud into the charger to test your battery charging before sealing back the outer cap; it saves you the hassle of having to remove the cap to tweak your battery position again.
Thanks a million. Just came across your tutorial and decided to do mine. Genuinely takes about 5 mins, and that's with pausing and resuming video, to follow all the steps. Many, many thanks again!
This XM3 is a sentimental value of me. Because of your video, I am managed to change the batteries by myself and it works like a charm again. God bless!
I managed it on mine although getting the top caps off in the first step can be tricky. My first attempt of one bud went fine, came off quite easily with patience and not too much effort, no marks. The second one however was difficult and the sticky pad underneath would not break free. Ended up slightly cracking the body, using a metal tool to peel the cap back, jamming one pick in the other side. Total bastard. It came off and managed to get that battery replaced eventually too. Works fine, minimal visible damage but annoying it came to that. Pot luck I guess. As other comments say, don't put the caps back on just screw the board down and drop them in the case to see them light up red charging. I left them off like that til they fully charged before replacing the caps and then resetting them.
Did a video on how to swap the battery a few month back ! Happy to see another video pop up about it as when I did mine there was none! It's good to spread the word and make less e-waste ! Great vid :)
Very nice. After a year I was down to about 3 1/2 hours battery life, a big drop off from from the 6+ when new. I won't change the batteries just yet because I only tend to use one at a time for reasons, so I can get a days work out of them. But when the battery inevitably drops further below 3 hours and swapping them becomes annoying I'll give it a shot.
Just done the task great instructions thank you. I had a bit of trouble snapping the covers back on, turns out id not recessed the board enough so it was making the backs pop open. A press on the circuit board, and further tightening of the board screws and voila snapped, and now enjoying 5 hr battery life from 1 hour, and a couple of hundred pounds saved!
just done mine. thank you so much. one of the biggest gripes with these headphones is the led is frigging bright and makes wearing at night like wearing lighthouses on your head. you can also pull the led off the board too at the same time.
My left earbud was only giving me 30 minutes of playback while the right one is still fine. Ordererd a pair of varta's from amazon for 20 euro's and you guided me through the replacement. My "Fiddley little chaps" are of the Philips type, not Stars. But thanks a lot for making this video. You saved my day....and my earbuds. 😊
Took a bit longer than 10 mins cos the top cover was bloody hard to pull off, then I realised it was because the round touch-sensitive part was doubletaped to the top cover so had to be really careful not to damage it. But finally did manage to get it done thanks to you, so thanks very much for your video!
Thanks, just did the process with your instructions, works fine.🎉 1 issue I've encountered though was after reassembling my left earphone, the button didn't work properly. It was constantly pushed. I then took it apart again, made sure the battery is as flush as possible and is not pushing the button towards the exterior. once i did that, it was fine. I think it is a pressure sensor, so it can't be under pressure.
Thank you for this video! My Right earbud stopped charging, but the Left earbud worked fine. I just ordered a pair of replacement batteries and will be referring to this video to complete the Right earbud battery replacement.👍

Agree on the Plaster cover tip, but also a note that the LED snapped out for me & didn't go back in. one to be aware of on the bit that comes out with the battery
Thanks a ton! Bought a pair on sale and they wouldn't work. Sony and the store refused to cover the warranty even though it was brand new. This worked though so you saved me a chunk of money. Cheers!
Thank you for this video, i changed my batteries as i was watching. Looking forward to test, mine were down to 15 minutes usage after 5-6 years. But they still sounds amazing so totally worth a replacement
Another tip for people like me: if you have some yellow tape on the _side_ of the batteries, remove it altogether anyway. I thought I had bricked mines, and when seeing some comments here I put them back out and back in while removing the plastic cover, and it it worked!
Thank you for the instuction video. I purchased a set of ZeniPower Z55 to replace the Varta batteries. The new set has larger capacities so it's an upgrade. The original ones were so deteriorated that they could only last 45 minutes. The new set has 70% after around three hour usage.

Hi, I just used your instructions and wverything worked just fine, my new airbud is now recharging. Thanks! BTW, the screws are so small I lost one of them, it just seemed to vanish; took me a few minutes to find out it was stuck to the side of the airbud (there´s a magnet there). Regards from Spain.
Thank you for this video! You gave me the confidence to change the batteries of my XM3s and this is what I actually did successfully earlier today. Big thanks!

I was finding my left earbud was running out of battery after 20 minutes when the right was still showing 70%. Thankfully bought two replacement batteries as the a couple of weeks later the right ear bud was lasting under an hour. Now lasting well over two hours on Teams calls. Sellers on eBay and Amazon all seemed a bit dubious but I was able to buy compatible batteries from RS Components (LIR1254H / stock number 1834285) for about £20 for the pair including delivery. When taking apart the left earbud I found the ribbon cable stayed attached to the top part of the case leaving the battery part able to come out once the screws were removed. The right ear disassembled as shown in your video - just something to be aware of when prizing apart. I also had some slightly glitchy behaviour immediately after swapping batteries where they wouldn't connect reliably. I think this was because they didn't have enough charge and they now work great. Thanks for posting the video - I wouldn't have been confident swapping batteries out without seeing you do it first so you've saved me a chunk of money on new headphones (and more e-waste!)
@@nigelwilson3584 Amazon do them for about £6, or ask a friend who may have replaced an iPhone screen recently as these kits have posing tools supplied, or use a small bladed screwdriver, but this may damage the earbud cosmetically.
Quick follow-up - after a couple of weeks found one of the buds was a bit temperamental powering up and eventually stopped turning on. Took it apart and prised one of the battery contacts up to give a better connection and that seems to have sorted for now.
Thank you for this video! one of my earbuds would barely last an hour, just replaced them and I'll have to let them charge for a moment to see how long they last.
Something went wrong somewhere. I replaced both batteries but the right side isnt working anymore. When i put it in the case the case led lights up so it does detect the right earbud. But the led on the right earbud doesnt light up and no sound plays from it. Edit: Audio works now. But the LED still doesn't. I guess i knocked something oof. But hey! The battery is fixed and that's the most important
Hey just wanted to leave a big thanks for creating this video. My left bud went from having 15mins battery life to... God knows how much charge now. I was gonna test it out, but after 2hrs it was still showing 100% and I don't get any opportunity to drain it any further
Mine currently doesn't last even like 30 mins. Once I can afford the money I'll buy the batteries and the toolkit and change it. Thank you for posting this video. I didn't even know that I could change it.
Thanks, fixed 2 pairs, 4 batteries costed 6.99 euro. I have black and beige, black had Zeni power z55 batteries and baige pair had Varta, it was odd, both are made in malaysia. But beige batteries failed quicker than black zeni power ones, though black pair was bought first. now both pairs have lir1254 generic probably from ali, will see how it will perform. but the screws were a nightmare to undo,,, broke my tiny scredriver as I had to use pliars. Thank you for the video tutorial. helped greatly!
My right earbud glitched out randomly and won’t re-sync with the left bud. They both charge fine, but flash red lights in the case. They both power on but on the left one connects. Ive tried all the reset methods
@@amrit_chail One of mines works as it is already connected while its not, cant pair with other bud nor connect to phone. Looks like software issue it is just stuck like this. None of reset methods really do anything. All I can do is switch between noise cancellation lol :D
Great tutorial. I was able to replace the right earbud with no issue. But for some reason the right doesn't seem to work. I notice that the red light flickers when in the case.
@@gsd32i I fixed the issue. The problem was that the replacement battery had a small metal tab that was soldered on each end of the battery. I pride it off and the battery works fine now.
Thank you very much, I just replaced my batteries thanks to your tutorial. I also have another I also have another set exactly like this, I will go ahead and order batteries for that one. I only ordered them for the one set because I didn't know how it go. 👍💯
Great video mate, thanks! It's fairly easy to do actually (even I was able to 😉😉) biggest struggle was finding the right screwdriver (it's a Phillips 000 if anybody is wondering)
Really cool video! My success rate became 50%. Managed to break the first bud (not only the ribbon, also plastic!) around 8:20. My recommendation: using parrot pliers (ones that give a parallel clasp) turned out giving a sturdy grasp on the battery. On the second unit, I used a twisting motion here, gently tiring the glue/fabric that was keeping the battery at base. Am now in need for a used, Left earbud if someone wishes to trade theirs! ;)
Thanks for the video! While my battery still lasted around 3 hours it was starting to annoy me. Just now replaced the battery's in my earbuds with the newer CP1254 A4X. Hopefully they'll last a bit longer. Also for me the touch+mic ribbon stuck to the top cover instead of the internal plastic part. This actually made it somewhat easier as I didn't have to stress about the ribbon while replacing the battery.
thanks Dude for tyhe helpful video... i have the WF1000 XM3s and got the XM5s the other day... im glad theres an easy fix to swap the battery... i repair electronics and mod Gameboys so id be comfortable doing the repair myself and it looks pretty straightforward... cheers!
Thanks for the nice teardown. Very informative! A few things I noticed while doing the same job to mine.. - The batteries can short very easily. Touching the top, bottom, and sides at the same time is a bad idea - The silicon holding down my metal battery connector came up with my old battery. In an attempt to save the old sticky, I tried to place the glue on the new battery. I put too much of it in between the connector and the battery, which prevented the right earbud from working. I took it apart again and totally removed the old sticky, and the earbud came right back.
I purchased Vartas from a US eBay seller named dealab. I returned them and got my money back. The batteries gave me 4.5 hour with ambient noise control and DSEE HX off, and probably lower volume than most people use. At least it was easier opening the buds the second time. If anyone finds a US seller that sells genuine new Vartas or Zenipower batteries please post.
Hi, did mine just now. It was ok but I broke one of the tabs that hold the 'lid' - drop of CA glue fixed it. Be careful about jamming stuff near the button - directly behind the (R) or (L) markings - thats were the tab I broke was ( you can see it at 4:05). Just as I finished I thought about heating the headphones slightly before you start - blast them with hair dryer to make the plastic more flexible and glue a bit weaker.
Nice. My right ear bud especially isn’t lasting a full movie (on my tv through the Roku app on my phone) so this is a nice cheap replenishment and surprisingly easy to do going by this video. I’ll be doing this soon

Other than that it's pretty straightforward. Many thanks

@@MichaelNolanUK Good effort 👍
Second time watching this video to replace the battery for the other side. Very good guide and refresher! Hope you have a video for XM5 too!
👍
Ive tried all the reset methods
have you replaced the earbud batteries?
@DoorisJ i have the exact same problem, have you rectified it?
@@amrit_chail One of mines works as it is already connected while its not, cant pair with other bud nor connect to phone. Looks like software issue it is just stuck like this. None of reset methods really do anything. All I can do is switch between noise cancellation lol :D
Great video. Very helpful. Just replaced the batteries. Thought i was going to have to buy new ones!
mister, thank you very much!
you gave my headphones a second life!
No problem 👍
Superb video thank you! Really helpful and clear and I got my XM3 batteries replaced in no time!
Thank you. For a mere $20 and your video, I give new life to my 4-year-old earbuds!
Just replaced my batteries after watching your video, thank you!
Wooo, thank you for this and thank you Sony for making it easy to replace!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks . This video saved my money. It cost me around 8US$ instead of buying new buds.
Excellent, my battery just started to lasted 30/45 minutes and was thinking on buying new earbuds, but ur video y money saver XD
No problem 👍
Ironically, my XM3s cut out towards the end due to the batteries being cooked. I'm definitely going to try that, thank you for the tutorial!
Great tutorial. I was able to replace the right earbud with no issue. But for some reason the right doesn't seem to work. I notice that the red light flickers when in the case.
Thanks have you tried a full reset?
@@gsd32i I fixed the issue. The problem was that the replacement battery had a small metal tab that was soldered on each end of the battery. I pride it off and the battery works fine now.
Thank you very much, I just replaced my batteries thanks to your tutorial. I also have another I also have another set exactly like this, I will go ahead and order batteries for that one. I only ordered them for the one set because I didn't know how it go. 👍💯
Glad it helped
Effectively why I bought mine. Was a simple job. Used a spludger to remove the battery.
Great video mate, thanks! It's fairly easy to do actually (even I was able to 😉😉) biggest struggle was finding the right screwdriver (it's a Phillips 000 if anybody is wondering)
Hello,it is a great clip .thank you .but my ear bud cannot connect bluetooth.any suggestions?thanks
Hi try a reset of the earbuds and try deleting the earbuds from your Bluetooth list on your phone and repairing them again
Thank you very much for your help.I am going to try it.
Am now in need for a used, Left earbud if someone wishes to trade theirs! ;)
🙈
Thanks for the video! While my battery still lasted around 3 hours it was starting to annoy me. Just now replaced the battery's in my earbuds with the newer CP1254 A4X. Hopefully they'll last a bit longer. Also for me the touch+mic ribbon stuck to the top cover instead of the internal plastic part. This actually made it somewhat easier as I didn't have to stress about the ribbon while replacing the battery.
Glad it helped
thanks Dude for tyhe helpful video... i have the WF1000 XM3s and got the XM5s the other day... im glad theres an easy fix to swap the battery... i repair electronics and mod Gameboys so id be comfortable doing the repair myself and it looks pretty straightforward... cheers!
Thanks for the nice teardown. Very informative! A few things I noticed while doing the same job to mine..
- The batteries can short very easily. Touching the top, bottom, and sides at the same time is a bad idea
- The silicon holding down my metal battery connector came up with my old battery. In an attempt to save the old sticky, I tried to place the glue on the new battery. I put too much of it in between the connector and the battery, which prevented the right earbud from working. I took it apart again and totally removed the old sticky, and the earbud came right back.
Great video. I tried opening my earbuds today, but I accidentally hit the LED indicator. At least now I can replace my batteries. Thanks!
Awesome, followed your instructions and replaced batteries on my set. Exactly as you describe it! Thanks :)
Getting genuine batteries is an issue
Hi, did mine just now.
It was ok but I broke one of the tabs that hold the 'lid' - drop of CA glue fixed it.
Be careful about jamming stuff near the button - directly behind the (R) or (L) markings - thats were the tab I broke was ( you can see it at 4:05).
Just as I finished I thought about heating the headphones slightly before you start - blast them with hair dryer to make the plastic more flexible and glue a bit weaker.
Thanks for this video sir. I'm about to buy a new set of earbuds, but because of this video I will try to fix mine instead of getting a new one.
Glad I could help
Thank you. Chalk up another set on XM3's saved from the scrap. Very much appreciated.
Glad to help
Thank you so much for the video!! I have managed to repair my wife’s earbuds following your methods!! Much appreciated!!!
Glad to help
Nice. My right ear bud especially isn’t lasting a full movie (on my tv through the Roku app on my phone) so this is a nice cheap replenishment and surprisingly easy to do going by this video. I’ll be doing this soon
Great vid and good explanation. Is there any possibility to change the battery in the case or a video with the type of batttery specs. Thx!!
The battery inside the case is not something I would attempt to change as there is an element of soldering involved!!
Brilliant! So glad this was available. Saved me a fortune.
Glad it helped!
Thank you very much, Can u change the batteries on the chargin case, as well????
You may be able to but I do not know how to 😢
@@gsd32i it looks extremely easy and amazon sells y the spare battery, just soldering 2 wires and heres how to disassemble. ua-cam.com/video/dj2FJNOT3fY/v-deo.html. Regards and thank you for your video. 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this video, it was easy to follow and now the earphones feel brand new.
merci grâce a vous ,je viens de donner une 2eme vie à mes écouteurs !!!!
Success! Thanks to this video I managed to change the batteries myself. Thanks again 👍🏆
My right bud died (dominate usage) all of the sudden last week. Ordered a new pair of batteries to replace. Hope it works and able to power on. Will save myself a few 100 if it does.
...lets give it a try....mines are shot and I only have about 15 minutes w. the right side and some good 25 w. the left. These buds are great and I've ended up purchasing Bose however they are nowhere near as resilient as the XM3s.
Thank you!!!! Excellent and straightforward explanation, i did it in less than 3 min🙌
Thank you for your work. I just have a question after the replacement . When I want to connect to my phone . On the software it’s written only 70% of charge . What can I do ? Thanks !!
Try deleting the app and then reinstall it and also do a reset of the charging case .
I followed your instructions. It worked. Thank you very much!
You’re welcome, glad it worked for you!
Cheers for this. Just done it and charging up for the first time 👍
Glad it helped
Thank you very much for your detailed instructions. I’ll buy you coffee when you are around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Look forward to it 👍👍
Thank you so much for the video, unfortunately i was unable to removed one the screw so didn't managed to replace the battery.
Hopefully you will be able to remove it next Tim you try.....
Battery life on mine with a "100% charge" was down to about 40 minutes. The official Sony repair procedure isn't great neither is their potential charges. So many thanks for this video. Following the advice from another commenter (thank you @Michael Nolan) I purchased 2 replacement batteries from RS Components (sn:1834285) - Removing the top cover took a bit of work and be careful removing the existing battery. Other than that it's pretty straightforward. Many thanks
A little more than a 10 min job lol.... but it worked perfectly. Thank you for this video. They are just like new :-)
Glad it helped!
Great. I will try to replace it. But pl tell me battery cell specifications.
Varta cp1254a3 or a4 (newer version)battery will work 👍
Thank you! I just replace my battery,
It’s running smooth now!
Glad I could help
Great video, it really helped. My Sony Headset is working great again. Waiting for the battery replacement in the charger ;)
It’s a total shame to design them in a way, that most people would assume they are broken and throw them away. For a weak BATTERY!!! This is really going out of hands … we need to fix things like the gentleman in this video.
And they refuse to repair this but at the same time shouting about greener enviroment. The truth is they knew how to forced consumer to buya New pair
All good I think. Interestingly I had tiny phillips heads in mine.
Thanks mate. Really useful video. I changed both in 5 minutes
