As for Gotham City, I consider their album The Unknown one of the best swedish albums ever, absolutely top five. Better than the efforts of some bands which got relatively more recognition like Torch or Axewitch, if you ask me. I personally regard Sweden as one of the leading countries in the history of heavy metal, probably the country with the highest rate of quality bands in the entire Old Continent. I first became aware of the band back in 1995, when the first Nocturnal Rites CD came out and I came across an interview in a magazine mentioning them, for obvious reasons. A couple of years later I managed to lay my hands on The Unknown, thanks to the tape-trading of the time (blessed be). Around mid-2000s a collection came out, most likely a bootleg if I recall correctly, called The Legend of Gotham City, with the 2 EPs and the full length on it. Later on I even got a copy of Black Writs. I'm actually not a big fan of the first singer and I think Zackrisson joining the band was a big step up for them. Someday I'll finally grab of copy of The Unknown, no matter what! Amazing, amazing band indeed, one of Sweden's finest!

I just got into this band recently and holyyyy shit their album "The Unknown" is my new favorite album as of late. Songs like "Swords and Chains" "See how it flies" and probably my current favorite song "Going Insane" are some of the most catchiest and most melodic metal songs I've heard, which seems to be a common theme among the Swedish bands. Listening to them, I can hear where Enforcer took some of their sound from, like the main riff/melody in "Swords and Chains" sounds like something they would write, and that's a huge plus for me as Enforcer is one of my favorite bands. Not sure if you would agree there's similarities but that's just what my ears heard. Anyway, I NEED to hear more of this 80's Swedish metal sound. So far I know Gotham City, Jonah Quizz, Heavy Load, and Parasite. I'll check out the bands featured in the video description but if you have any more suggestions, please let me know!

The full (and correct) biography featuring interviews with four forming members will be featured in the re-issue to be out on Cult Metal Classics later this year. Correction: The demo was recorded in 1982, not in 1981, as it was recorded AFTER the single, not before, as it was recorded as a demo for "Black Writs". The band DID record a demo prior to the single, but it was just a rehearsal porta demo that was never distributed (as it was incorrectly recorded).
I’ve known about the band since 2011. That’s when I was big into NWOBHM bands like Hammerhead, Triarchy, Paralex, Dark Star, Black Axe, Bitches Sin, Angel Witch, etc. I thought Gotham City should’ve been just as big as Iron Maiden, and nobody I’ve met seems to know of them, much less like any metal from the 1980’s.
The 1981 demo is well worth checking out, I think its versions of 1995 and Black Writs are better than on the MLP, and the version of Borderline is also of course much different with Ola on vocals: ua-cam.com/video/V_6F-jP9iMg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=HansMillingen

Only the good bands truly quit for good in the 1980s . All the lame bands had reunions in the new millennium, to the point where it's become ridiculous. No Batman in sight but great Heavy Metal for sure. Destiny and its ways ...
yes!
No way.. Bästa svenska bandet var Madison med Göran Edman." Oh randivous". Alternativ är Rising force med "making love". Tack för en bra site
bra skit det med. :)

thank you Sir!
I love your videos can you do one of these on candlemass
maybe some day. :)
Where was I 9 months ago? How'd I miss this
I have no idea. ;)
@@RuthlessMetalYT I thought this was a new video, and was amazed I hadn't found it earlier. Really great work on the band's music career
@@godetonter4764 Thank you Sir! Unfortunately people only watch the videos about the big bands. ;:D
I hope this video leads to a reissue of their album.
I doubt it will, they dont seem to interested in it. I know that there has been some bootlegs floating around though.
Very interesting! I think the band sounds great, but the singer (Ola) isn't keeping up with the band in quality. Zackrisson however did.
Yeah Zackrisson has a better voice but I like Ola too, he has such a unique voice, that thick Swedish accent.
People that become fans/long-time listeners will usually end up viewing his vocals as a vital part of the Gotham experience. Like Ruth says, it's something different/unique. Endearing
Excellent . keep safe and keep rockin
Thank you Sir, the same 👍
The full (and correct) biography featuring interviews with four forming members will be featured in the re-issue to be out on Cult Metal Classics later this year.
You always deliver! looking forward to that. 🍻
Yes, they were amazing, but they were from the north of Sweden and only the bands from the big cities made it somewhat big.
I really liked their dark lyrics in songs like borderline or black writs…
FINALLY!!!!! Excellent band
Cheers!
With Swords and Chains we will go.
do a video on poison (the German black metal band)
Look what the cat dragged in. ;) just kidding. hehe 👍
So cool band, svensk metal är riktigt bra faktiskt!
Ja, Svensk 80tals metal slår det mesta!
I saw a Gotham City "The Unknown" CD many years ago for about 80 sek...still regret that I didn't buy it...haven't seen one ever since and right now I saw one on eBay for 187 euro.
I think those are bootlegs. Bit even they can be expensive I guess.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Yes, boots indeed, but better than nothing (if reasonable priced), cuz there are unfortunately no official CD releases as far as I know of.
Gotham City were one of the best heavy metal bands of all time. Also Heavy Load, Omen, Manilla Road, Medieval Steel and so on. This is true heavy metal, those who know, know.
yes sir!
Hail from Perú
krokus, vandengberg so underrated too
Krokus is Swiss though, not Swedish. ;)
@@RuthlessMetalYT ok my bad
that map of sweden and the bands on the map in the beginning of the video. could you send could you send a link to that image?
I made that image long time ago, maybe it's on my instagram.
I didn’t think Ola Olhssan wasn’t really a bad vocalist, he was probably better for a punk band or something else kinda like Paul Dianno from Iron Maiden.

Interesting choice of band to profile. I thought they were a good band, but not great. They certainly deserved more attention then they received.
I think they are one of the best metal bands in Europe and they are still somewhat obscure.
With swords and chains we will go! The Irish Gotham City fanclub is strong.
One of the best? I disagree.
But, music is subjective and I highly appreciate your passion, man.
listen to The Unknown again, it's amongst the greatest heavy metal albums for sure.
Uh oh be careful you may get hate mail for your comment. Band sucks
@@RuthlessMetalYT I will. I didnt mean they were bad. Just that they're not in my top list peronally.
@@TheVioletBunny you rage deleted your thread, you claimed to be 30 but act like a tween. Gotham City rules
@@ElizaWebbg because you people couldn’t get over the fact that someone didn’t like a band 🤷🏻♂️ and got tired of the constant notifications. Now go back to your regularly scheduled cheesy Viking power metal named after a comic book.
Those lyrics are bonkers
yeah, english is not their first language, but I think they managed to come up with some great lyrics at times even if it's not always correct. Cheers!
Äkta muskelrock!
jajjemän
Vart tog Ola vägen? En unik röst
Han la av.
Hörde ryktas för länge sen att han hade flyttat till Spanien.
Synd han skulle vart kvar och sjungit borderline på lp
Björn-Erik Melander later became a giant within the relaxation music genre :D
gigantus relaxus
They was great. But for me(born in norrland)the best band was/is 220 Volt from östersund. Have everything with that band, include their first single.
I want to own The Unknown so bad, the best Swedish Heavy Metal release bar none. Why is no one making a reissue???
I don't think the band is that interested in their old music, so that's why I guess. I have an original vinyl, it's getting pretty expensive these days. ;)
@@RuthlessMetalYT Well that's a crying shame. I take it you've had the vinyl for a while now? Must be worth a fortune
@@ShadowSamba yeah, I bought it some 20 years ago. :)
Only the good bands truly quit for good in the 1980s . All the lame bands had reunions in the new millennium, to the point where it's become ridiculous. I would have liked to have more Gotham City music from the 1980s, but they recorded Steel and Chains one of the greatest things ever recorded. It's actually a positive thing that at least a few bands don't pursue the KISS route. Sometimes you got to know when it's time to move on. The history speaks for itself
Yeah, one of the greatest to ever do it. ;)
I think he sounded a lot like Bruce Dickinson
hmm, I don't know if I agree with that. :D great singer though.
I'm saying that he sounded like Bruce Dickinson from his first three albums
yeah buddy he did it
Yes Sir! 👍
One of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time...one album...come on man!
Yes without a doubt. they also have an EP, one single and a few demos. They didn't write one bad song.
you wouldn't get it
Yo Jim
yo Zeke
@@RuthlessMetalYT how are you doing today
@@_giovannisanchez6032 Im doing good. how about you?
@@RuthlessMetalYT I’m doing good
Its a shame i cant find them on Spotify:(
their albums are uploaded to youtube, I've linked them in the description. :)
@@TheVioletBunny What do you listen to?
@@RuthlessMetalYT thanks ill check them out:)
Everyone hated this when it was new
Everyone hated what?
@@RuthlessMetalYT everyone hated epic Metal bands in 1984 . Everyone liked Pop Metal like Krokus , and Great White . Manilla Road , Gotham City , Cirith Ungol , and Keene Hue have always been my favorite bands , but prior to the Big European Power Metal explosion no one else shared my enthusiasm for real Metal
@@RuthlessMetalYT I realize people supported Iron Maiden , and Judas Priest , but the majority of people really only liked Screaming For Vengeance and the boring Iron Maiden songs like Trooper , and Run To the Hills . I am happy that bands like Gotham City , and Silver Mountain are finally shown the recognition they deserve
But where were all these supporters back when these bands were struggling ? It's almost become trendy to like more adventurous Medieval theme Heavy Metal these days
History of sludge metal please
I don't even know what that is-
Amazing video, thanks man
thank you!
