I think Sweden have a tradition of melody, our folk music is very melodic. It felt natural to make our metal so melodic, and being influenced by traditional heavy metal and hard rock also helped
I actually asked this to the vocalist of Amaranthe and I’m assuming she is younger than these. Even if just slightly. She told me in Sweden they focus on learning to sing and play an instrument in school. And all Swedish folk songs are melodic.
That's true. And most guys start with a violin because that's the most metal instrument available to them. Once they get good at that violin, they naturally pick up a guitar on their own.
Are there any young rock metal bands out there? because I see alot of young rappers but no young bands if so can you please list them. alot of people tell me it's underground but where the f**k is this underground they speak of?
As a Swede from Stockholm of the "right" age (50) I think there are other reasons. Sweden is one of the biggest countries in the world of music. It isn't limited to metal. Sweden was one of the first nations to develop good music schooling that was available for free to everybody. Sweden also had a good enough economy that most parents could afford getting instruments for the kids. Swedish language education - with emphasis on English has definitely helped. Lastly we used to have youth centers where kids could perform and try out their music on a small audience.
But that doesn't answer the question as to why Swedish Metal ends up being so melodic, which ends up making it popular as hell? Like others said, it may have to do with Sweden's history, and the Folk music which influenced Swedish metalheads.
@@HeroSword_P And maybe also being taught classical music and music history which likely broadens the influences. I think early training on several instruments has a part - it becomes easier to achieve a clean sound if you are technically proficient.
Joe Yeah, I was wondering how Bathory played into all this, and sort of bummed “they” weren’t mentioned, and really, black metal wasn’t much of a part of this discussion at all. I wonder what city was Bathory from? Maybe it was bc of differences in local scenes that their music played less a part in influencing these groups? Or maybe Bathory was just way cooler to the kids in Oslo and Bergen (specifically early Bathory, that is)? Whatever the case, I was expecting at least a shout out to one of Sweden’s most important and influential metal bands of all time. Oh well.
Fun fact: Opeth, when they were recording their first studio album, had to wait for At The Gates, everyday, to finish while they were recording Slaughter of the Soul. In Mikael's own words; "I would show up early everyday just to hear what they were doing. It was incredible. I've never heard anything like that." In retrospect; that's awesome. The reason it's so neat is because Opeth have since become a much more iconic band. Mikael probably still doesn't believe it lol.
Another thing that might have influenced the music is the Swedish municipal music schools. Basically all Swedish children had the opportunity to learn to play an instrument with no costs, the drawback for a metalhead is that you have to learn more classical music first. This maybe made it more natural to make melodic music without even thinking about it.
Yeah that's true. Same goes for Finland and Norway I guess. Musical education is a big part of the Nordic cultures and classical music has a prominent status here
So true, love Sweden for it. I started the Studiefrämjanden thing, a municipal incentive to get kids to have something to get their energy into something creative. Got a quick course on music theory, and they gave us 5000 sek to buy equipment. Wow, looking back, I can't say how much that has meant. Still playing now, and 49 years old soon...And the same for sorts in Sweden, any kid can access it. Much to be grateful for.
don't think that's a drawback at all. Classical music as well as Jazz are, like Heavy Metal, all about musical artistry. And it's no surprise that so many metal musicians have some background in one or the other genre.
@@Eluarelon Yeah. Is something wrong with melody in metal? That's the main reason I love metal - awesome and catchy melodies, like ones you can find in the collections of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and many more!
The only Metal genres without much melody are the fast and aggressive ones like Thrash, Death, Grind etc, and even those have some nice melodies here and there. Black Metal for example, is a lot more melodic than the vast majority of radio pop... Sure, it also has shrieky vocals, tons of blast beats and endless minor chords on top of eachother, but the melodies are still very strong.
My name is Banger. I’m a metal head from the birth of metal , born and raised in Chicago , class of 84 !! So being in high school with a car we went to all the shows. Seen all the bands , most of them front row. This video is so cool because it reminds me of what we were doing back then , and tells how one night of that on a tv show created a whole country of amazing metal bands !!
Love this video, awesome hommage to melodic death and Swedish metal. Love the guests either talking about the history or showing respect for the influence the genre brought.
Bathory is part of the First Wave of Black Metal. Later on Quorthon started taking the band in more of a melodic direction. Not really death metal at all... Entombed is straight death metal too not "melodeath."
It's because they have more talented songwriters. Why is 70% of Death Metal outside of Scandinavia such anonymous, generic, forgettable crap? Because comparatively few can write a memorable melodic line.
If you look at the Stockholm death metal bands they all basically sound identical though. If you look at Sweden as a whole there's a lot of original sounding albums for sure.
Florida crushes those bands, in my opinion. Obituary weren’t melodic but they were catchy as hell. Plus they worshipped Morbid Tales. I love At The Gates, but there aren’t many top tier from that scene. There were a handful but after that it was just 4th rate clones. America had Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation. Although can we all agree that Bolt Thrower smashes everyone? Amazing band from a country not that rich in death metal.
only because there are more bad US bands doesn't mean there are no good US bands. it's a big world and in bigger countries there are more people and therefore more bands. which means the probability of encountering stuff you don't like is bigger. think of it this way: there might be a lot of crappy swedish bands but they never made it big so you never heard of them^^
Depends on taste. Although Left Hand Path is one of my favs, I think the likes of Altars of Madness, Leprosy and Severed Survival crush anything from Scandinavia. It’s all just opinions at the end of the day.
Joe doesn't need to animate his motions and voice so much. I get that he is trying to make his lines more enthusiastic and "professionally made", but sincerity sounds like a much more fitting vibe for this kinds of videos. Graham is a good example. Him trying less and being more sincere actually upped the quality and watchability of his videos tenfold.

I love ALL metal. Power metal, thrash, doom, black, blackened death, slam, metalcore...all of it. Love it. But Melodeath just fills my soul, man. It's everything I love about the genre. When I first heard Colony and Slaughter of the Soul, I knew that was the type of music I would attempt to write for the rest of my life. It's what I heard in my head but could never get it to come out, or put a name to it. I still listen to Slaughter of the Soul fairly often. It's just a technically perfect album, and I think the magic of it is the EXTREMELY good musicianship. Recorded all on tape, and the band insists to this day that there isn't a single mistake on the album, and you just hear it.
Heavy Load never really gets enough credit. Early Swedish Hard Rock/Metal band that's a pretty good fusion of melody and blues-based rock/metal. Really influenced by Deep Purple and Rainbow who themselves were pretty much combinations of what others have described here.
Sounds more like South Korea. If I had to guess I would say it's more because of government sponsored associations, youth and recreation centers, and so on. There were a lot of opportunities to borrow instruments, rehearse and get gigs.
I'm 35 and I still remember when I bought heartwork back on 2006 or 07. I was into more metal core and deathcore but I worked with a guy that loved more extreme metal. Some things touched on in the video but could be talked about further: The Swedish and Nordic folk music that our parents let us listen to often have quite dark lyrics to them about someone dying and the forest creatures to look out for, which I for one was fascinated by but wanted heavier music to match. Another thing is that the casette trading was a huge thing in both the 80s and 90s metal and punk scene. Which turned into the burned cd trading in the 90s early 00s. Not to forget the Zines. Sound pollution record store in old town Stockholm i belive came in the 80s or early 90s and is still around. Headbangers Ball on TV, then live recorded on VHS to show all of my friends was one of the things that opened up my eyes to more alternative rock and metal. Saw how cool it was to a rock musician on stage. Fritidsgårdar, or in English Youth clubs (state run) was huge in the 80s and 90s where young people hang out and could borrow instruments and rent rehearsal spaces , sometimes for free. I for one know that I would never had the opportunity to start a band without that support. See the story of Huset, Oasen and Ebba Grön. One of the places where we as 16y olds rehearsed was run by some of the members of Hellacopters. One day the basist from Candlemass knocked on our door and asked if he could borrow a pic, perfectly normal.(10years ago now) Studiefrämjandet, and getting a little financial support for buying gear and setting up local shows where teenagers bands could play. That it in the 90s and early 00s was easy for a kid to get music lessons, relatively cheap for my parents. And many teachers was down with that students had goals of wanting to learn to play rock/classic rock on guitar, bass, drums. Musik estet gymnasium - senior high school where you could study music and art, also common place where people met other kids they wanted to start bands with, who also had the same passion for music and some skills on their instruments. All of these influenced me and my two brothers into starting rock and metal bands, accessibility, gave us passion and belief in the dream of musicianship.

Rinse hair: Partly Dry with damp towel. Spray leave-in conditioner and scrub coconut oil and conditioning mousse into the fray… Mess everything up… Comb. Dry. Comb. Mess. Dry. Brush… ..hair care is the third most important part of metal!!!!!!!
Btw, LOVE THAT BAND. In my family, we are only four who are in metal, and we are all huge fans and met them at the Meet&Greet at their last tour. Great guys! And on those 4 people includes my uncle who has followed the band since they started, and their last release is his favorite next to Clayman. So, yes the majority of people actually don't care about the change over the sound and only care about the music, and it is still strong
It seems that 1983 Swedish television show that all those musicians saw when they were younger was as impressionable as The Beatles were on the 'Ed Sullivan Show' in America back in the late 1960's for the 70s/80's musicians!
Even Swedish grindcore is melodic! Nasum’s last 2 albums is pretty much melodic grindcore and a perfect place to start for anyone getting into really extreme music!

Growing up in Sweden at the same time as these guys, I used two listen to ultravox and culture club... then I hit puberty and found ZZ Top. A friend said so you like heavy guitars? So listen to this... it was sepultura, beneath the reamains album... and I was hooked

Sure, it also has shrieky vocals, tons of blast beats and endless minor chords on top of eachother, but the melodies are still very strong.

the answer is folk music... also artist support lmao

It'd be great to see bands like Convulse talk about the early DM scene

My name is Banger. I’m a metal head from the birth of metal , born and raised in Chicago , class of 84 !! So being in high school with a car we went to all the shows. Seen all the bands , most of them front row. This video is so cool because it reminds me of what we were doing back then , and tells how one night of that on a tv show created a whole country of amazing metal bands !!
Mikael Åkerfeldt looks like the metal Lasse Åberg.
Naa, Dave Grohls older brother. :)
Holy shit you're fucking right! Haha x)
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT
Trazan Åkerfeldt !!! :D
men var är Metal Arne?
Thanks. Now I probably won't be able to listen to Opeth ever again.
Love this video, awesome hommage to melodic death and Swedish metal. Love the guests either talking about the history or showing respect for the influence the genre brought.
How in the hell did you not named Bathory or Entombed....
...THE HAUNTED...
THE HAUNTED BRO, THEY FUCKED UP BY NOT MENTIONING THEM
Bathory is part of the First Wave of Black Metal. Later on Quorthon
started taking the band in more of a melodic direction. Not really death metal at all... Entombed is straight death metal too not "melodeath."
@@butchvito I'd really only consider the first two Entombed albums death metal though.
fuckwad And Marduk and Dismember are? Dismember are about just as ”melodic” as Entombed...
Sweden was the birth place of melodic death metal my most favorite subgenre
I like Swedish Melodic Death Metal 🤘🤘🤘
You should listen to Orbit Culture!🤘👌🔥
Bud Langley melodic death metal rules over extreme death metal
SAME.
Ahhh how sweet.
It's because they have more talented songwriters.
Why is 70% of Death Metal outside of Scandinavia such anonymous, generic, forgettable crap?
Because comparatively few can write a memorable melodic line.
Well fucking said
If you look at the Stockholm death metal bands they all basically sound identical though.
Joakim Broden of Sabaton said that their album "Carolus Rex" is heavily inspired by Swedish folk music
And swedish history.. Cause The whole album is about the swedish empire days lol
In Flames is king. The new stuff isn't melodic death metal, it's more metalcore, but all of it slaps in my humble opinion. I love all of it.
What about finlands metal bands?
Lordi.
Swallow The Sun
What about South Korean metal bands.

0:49 Talking about Swedish Black Metal and not mentioning Dark Funeral??? That's a crime against humanity and punishable via the Geneva Convention.
On the other hand naming Marduk among melodic Swedish Black Metal bands? I don't know, man...
I'm here crying coz NO ONE of thos people have respect to Quorthon, no one said #Bathory! The hell?!
@@PleasureToGrill they don't focus on melody and yet they have great melodies in a lot of their songs!
Thought the same thing because Dark Funeral have great riffs with stunning melodies in them \m/
A video about folk-metal and the birth of the scene in Finland would be cool.
Give him a break. He's clearly high on acid.

@Danny Dircio Ha, good call. There are exceptions, pornogrind being one of them. And crazy-slow stuff like Khanate.
Heavy Load never really gets enough credit. Early Swedish Hard Rock/Metal band that's a pretty good fusion of melody and blues-based rock/metal. Really influenced by Deep Purple and Rainbow who themselves were pretty much combinations of what others have described here.
That TV-show changed a lot of lives, including mine. I was 7 years old at the time.
Ghost is another great Swedish band
What do they have to do with death metal?
@@butchvito He only said they're a great band, not anything about death metal.
Dickbrain McGee Why do they have to do with death metal?

Scorpions influence on Sweden was huge many Swedish bands like Opeth, In Flames and Enforcer were big fans of them
I worked with a swede and he said all students must play an instrument in school. More competition I’m assuming leads to more savants and prodigys
Sounds more like South Korea. If I had to guess I would say it's more because of government sponsored associations, youth and recreation centers, and so on. There were a lot of opportunities to borrow instruments, rehearse and get gigs.
@@hybridwafer no its true, in middle school everyone has to play one instrument. At least back in the -00 when I was a kid.

European and UK metal bands were the greatest things to come from metal.
Is this a Brexit reference?
I'm 35 and I still remember when I bought heartwork back on 2006 or 07. I was into more metal core and deathcore but I worked with a guy that loved more extreme metal. Carcass, bloodbath, cannibal corpse and slayer i listed to that he showed me. Bought albums from all those bands and Carcass blew me away. They are just on another level. I eventually went back and listened to the 3 previous record's and my mind was blown away again with symphonies of sickness.
Melody in metal is sounds freaking amazing destorted & best thing for metal imo
I always wonder that how these Swedish bands are so heavily enriched. Thanks for this video.
I'm also wearing my Candlemass t-shirt this moment. But mine's the TRUE logo. The cross and demon skull logo.
Thanks for being so gracious with Katatonia's music.

This was the defining moment!!! Dortmund 83. German TV produced (Thank you!!!!!!) and Swedish TV bought it in..Hell, this show was the pinnacle of metal! I was sick and my parents recorded it, love them for it, and I watched it the next day. I kind of see what religious people talk about, this is religion to me, I saw passion, acceptance, joy, love and the all important rebellion of youth. Well as a kid in Sweden in the 80s, everyone in my class had to learn to play the Recorder flute. I hated playing it, but its the first instrument i learned to play. And the songs we played where often melodic folk kinda music.
You guys are so close minded about great bands that come out of Sweden how about Europe, TREAT, 220 VOLT, the newer stuff Crashdïet and Crazy Lixx, plus so many more.
There is also really easy to find a place to play in Sweden, still. You can usually get a rehearsal place pretty close by for very little or no money.
this needs more Edge of Sanity
Saw Krokus opening for Rainbow in Lakeland Florida. Awesome show
If you've never listened to (edge of sanity) check out the album Purgatory Afterglow, and Crimson 1. It's crazy that it's from the early to mid 90s.
Steven Braykovich Also admireable, they are from a really small little town nobody has ever heard of. Despite that, they got Huge recognition worldwide along bands from Swedens larger cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg Who had it easier Than small town bands.
One day the basist from Candlemass knocked on our door and asked if he could borrow a pic, perfectly normal.(10years ago now)
Studiefrämjandet, and getting a little financial support for buying gear and setting up local shows where teenagers bands could play.
