  • The Danish Heavy Metal icons Mercyful Fate formed in Copenhagen in 1981 after the dissolution of the band Brats, and during a short span of four years, they changed our perception of metal. They released one EP (Mercyful Fate)and two Full-Length LP's (Melissa and Don't Break The Oath) They were fronted by the charismatic King Diamond that laid his falsetto vocals over the riffs from the dynamic duo of Hank Shermann and Michael Denner and Timi Grabber and Kim Ruzz kept the rhythm. So in todays video we're going to take a deep dive into the early career of one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Mercyful Fate. Enjoy!

King Diamond fan from mid 80's to now. I named my Daughter Abigail almost 22 years ago and she recently asked me, Dad, did you name me after a demon baby who ate her way out of her Mother? I said that's not even the weird part Abby, you were born on Kings Birthday. She said how did you guys manage that? and I replied "Fate"

That something different is an anointing of evil on the music to poison your mind and damn your soul. That evil little pixie will burn in Hell if he doesn’t repent for persecuting Christ. He plays with the occult and Satan as if he will escape the torment to come. He treads where angels fear to tread, except those fallen from grace who await the final torment to come. Merciful fate sounded kinda like old school priest 'stained class' guitar tone. Which is necessary metal. I hear michael sheinkar and uli jon roth guitar influence . I got Melissa when it was new, based on the album cover alone. Had never heard of them before. Put it on (cassette!), and I still remember being just mesmerized by Evil. This album honestly scared me, as it was the first album that sounded genuinely satanic to me. I definitely felt like I was doing something wrong by listening to it, which was part of the appeal, of course! This became “my” band that I would listen to alone, nobody else. Like with Iron Maiden I could play it around friends. But not MF, that was my private band.

Interesting. I "lost my cherry" like that with Witchfynde's "Giv'em Hell" in 1980, so Mercyful Fate didn't scare me, I'd rather say it took Judas Priest's place after they (very disappontingly) became just another MTV-band, after having delivered the most solid heavy metal work of them all in the late 70s.

How did they lose the songwriting, the KILLER guitar lead work, the KILLER rythym, the vibe- sound- and the mojo those other 4 albums had? I know Return Of The Vampire is supposed to be a collection of other versions of songs- demos or whatever, but it's one of the best Mercyful Fate albums to me. It was supposed to be on the 19th with Slayer but US customs screwed up due to the stage gear/props. We hung out with Slayer and MF at a signing days before and after the show, and our singer-Warrel Dane later toured with King Diamond, maintaining a good friendship. The guys were really nice and I was surprised hearing about how they recorded Mellisa with minimal gear. Seems much of the sound was due to the studio. After I listened to that album, I bought all his earlier albums and Merciful Fate albums as well.
In 1993 King Diamond was on a local metal radio show in Philadelphia, United States.
Merciful Fate had released "In the Shadows" that year.
They were taking calls from listeners to talk to him.
One of the guys who called in got his grandmother on the phone ... King Diamond said to her- let's have a cup of tea sometime
The old woman told him it was her birthday that day and he said happy birthday.
I also called in to the show and got through.
I was so nervous, but I did manage to say something like, "I really love your music, it means a lot to me"
to which King Diamond replied, "Thank you very much" in his Danish accent.
I wanted to talk more to him/ask him a question.. but I froze & couldn't get any more words out, so they cut the call off lol

I have a story to tell here i think all will find interesting . I grew up in Lexington Kentucky . But my Grandmother lived about20 minutes away in Nicholasville . I would go there to visit every weekend as a kid (Early 80s ). A house about 5 or so down from Grandmas , was a huge mural of Dont Break the Oath in the backyard . I was a young metal head 8 or so but i knew the image from metal mags . I go back 15 years later , its still there . So my friend goes to the door to ask whats up , and if they would come off the mural . The elderly lady said no , My son painted it shortly before his suicide . WOW ! Its still there to this day as far as i know . It was still 2 years ago

I had a friend in college who had access to a great record store back home. I heard Melissa first from his collection. The guitar riffs had me hooked from the start. I had never heard so many riffs in songs before. Used to be intro, verse, chorus, bridge repeat. This was a whole new thing and I loved it and still do. King Diamond's voice had to grow on me but I love it now for it's uniqueness. I asked my friend to grab me a copy of Melissa when he went home for break but he brought me back Don't break the Oath hot off the presses. It was amazing and I listen to both often to this day. I recommend listening to Michael Denner and Hank Sherman 30th anniversary jams for both Melissa and Don't Break the Oath if you haven't watched them. Oath is one of my favorite all-time albums ever. I never tire of listening to it. My mom also loved it. I brought it home back in 1984 from the mall record store when I was 14 years old. I listened to it on my room stereo full blast over and over and over again. Finally, my mom burst through my bedroom door carrying a laundry basket, and shouted what was I listening to? I thought she was going to complain about the lyrics or loudness but instead smiled and said "I like them. I love that singer". I had also bought the Melissa album at about the same time. I found out about the band in a metal magazine that reviewed the band and said quote "have soaring vocals and constant (guitar) solos"....that review made me walk to the mall and buy their albums!

Mercyful Fate was and is unique on so many levels. I loved there music as a teen and still listen to them on a weekly basis today.
The intro solo to Melissa gives me the chills every single time, the complex solos and ever changing pace and melody on Satans Fall is one of a kind, The lyrics to Evil is some of the most badass ever written, The mood in Gypsy is just so dark and scary and A Dangerous Meeting is in my opinion the most perfect Heavy Metal song ever recorded. And still as badass too me now at 55 years old as when I discovered them when I was 16 years old. King Diamond went on to create a brilliant catalogue of his own afterwards. But those first 3 Mercyful Fate albums were pivotal for me personally. And I will always hold them in high esteem. Just as brilliant now as they were then. Fuck. I can’t believe I’m an old man now. Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you!
Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits.
Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven.
And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real!
Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out.
In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil.
“Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!

@@PRHILL9696 Wow, those are some fascinating quotes! Thank you for sharing them. That's very interesting. One can see where he's coming from on some of the Mercyful Fate lyrics.
Mercyful Fate is great entertainment. King's voice is unique. The musicianship is top notch. He's such an amazing stage performer. Such a magnificent story teller. I saw them once. I was very fortunate. I must remark that it was a strange show. I felt like there was some magick there. Just a wonderful experience that I will always treasure.
Anton was a great keyboard player. I've seen some video of him playing an organ and it was really entertaining. He probably could have enjoyed a career in music, too. I would have put him in my band that's for sure. Can you imagine having Anton Lavey in your band? When I consider it I still can't believe he didn't pursue music as a career.

@@image30p Glad you enjoyed the quotes. King has said people would be shocked if they knew how much of the lyrics are based on real experiences. Anton would have been huge doing that as a career. I know he and King had a deep personal relationship and respect for each other. I talked to King a few times and he would talk about Anton some, but much of what was talked about between them he keeps very private

@@PRHILL9696 Based on what I have experienced, some events are beyond explanation in terms of "science." Although I'm really curious what he and Anton might have discussed, I definitely respect the privacy of it. And that's rule #4 anyway. To be silent. But he let's it flow in his art. That's the magick.

Saw the Mercyful Fate reunion tour in Atlanta , twice. They had such a good turn out the first time they came back. Both shows were epic experiences. They had Snowy Shaw on drums for that tour.

My father took me to see the DBTO show at L'amours in Brooklyn when I was 14. He didn't know what to make of it but say his kid having a blast! He enjoyed himself by the middle of the show! It was a memory and a time well spent. My father passed away, but before he did, be adopted a little kitten for me he named, Abigail. Abby lived to be 16 years old. Both are so missed! Now I'm 53 and still love MF/KD to NO end! When they hit the scene, there was nothing like it! I was in!!

I discovered Mercyful Fate via the song Black Funeral which appeared on a compilation album called Metal For Breakfast in 1984, on the Canadian label Attic Records.
The song was enough to make me seek out its album of origin, which was of course Melissa. Evil became an instant favorite, as well as Satan's Fall (my first introduction to epic songs exceeding 5 minutes, lol). Great memories.

Damn, you've got a real talent for documentaries, this was excellent. You also seem to be very knowledgeable about the various genres of metal as well as the crossover between the early punk and metal scenes. I'm a new subscriber and I've really enjoyed what I've seen from your channel so far. I think I was about 12 yrs old when I first heard Mercyful Fate. I got Melissa on cassette and I played it until I wore it out completely. You're absolutely right about the guitar work, it was nothing short of amazing and really heavy as well. Some of the lyrics were kind of cheesy, but with songwriting like that who gives damn? They were one of the best bands to come out of that era without a doubt! Keep up the good work, brother.

" don't break the oath ", " Melissa ", "fatal portrait" and "Abigail " these 4 albums are all MASTERPIECES and belong undisputed my top 10 albums of heavy metal , i've heard each one a thousand times and they still fell like magic every time. But if i had to chose one i would choose " don't break the oath ", each time i hear it it's a journey to another world.
thanks for the video, it's very well done.

Great video. I hope you do one on the King Diamond band too. Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. For sure my two go to bands of my teenage years. They were dark, heavy, and excellent musicians, and I kind of actually loved being one of only a couple people I knew that even knew about them back then. Always had an underground feel to me, especially, of course, Mercyful.

Hmm.. the first Brats album wasn't self-titled, it was entitled "1980". We did a show with Brats on March 7, 1981. The line-up then featured King Diamond, Hank, Carsten, Yenz on bass and Monro (Lars) on drums. They even did a promo poster and took promo photos with this line-up. Classic band! We just released a live album with our show, and we also did record part of Brats' set.

My favorite Mercyful Fate work is Mercyful Fate Melissa's debut, which I have even released entirely on guitar.
Mercyful Fate distinguishes itself from the entire heavy metal genre in its quality of composing disease darkness without any joy.

Black funeral and Melissa songs are mixed differently and different vocals in the title track.
