    Great sequence and loved the explanation the 5 fundamentals - I can feel my left elbow working as it should as the other elements are in place - I'm left handed btw! It is an empowering feeling when you are delivering the club to the ball on plane - works especially well with both my hybrids - the strike, ball flight and direction are simply awesome - this has changed my swing forever! Thanks Russell looking forward to the next set of videos

    So glad I found you man. After listening for 20 seconds it is apparent that you speak the kind of descriptive, detail oriented language that resonates with me and coincides with my own (however limited) understanding of the golf swing; namely that all previous things affect that which follows. This approach is grossly lacking in much on-line instruction that I have found so far. I shall eagerly watch all your videos and hope that it helps my ‘almost there’ but ‘definitely still not’ golf swing!

Not seen them before) and time spent can honestly say the great game has become fun again low to mid 80’s last year now hitting low to mid 70’s - much to your short game catalogue .👍👍👍

    Great explanation as always Russell. One thing I've struggled with, more so with driver, is when feeling the right elbow leading and forearm facing upwards, I also get the the feeling of the clubface being wide open. Right elbow leading feels more culprit if I had to choose one. At this stage is it simply a matter of trusting the rotation through will square the face up?

    I tried this trailing bent right elbow thingy, good grief, wor a difference, am now having to revise my iron strategy...(for the better)
    7 iron instead of a 6 etc
    5 iron instead of various woods
    I may beat my (much younger) nephew for a change, with this new found knowledge

    My 2 cents on getting the elbow in the correct position. 1) It is absolutely essential that the LOWER BODY starts the downswing for the right elbow to work correctly. Don't throw arms from the top and don't yank the shaft down. Basically do nothing with the arms, other then let them fall into position. So start turning your lower body just before ARMS reach top of swing.
    2) As you pivot, maintain a soft right arm in the early downswing and just simply let the right elbow drop and connect (or get close) to your side. Don't use any muscular effort to get the elbow in that position. And don't worry about trying get the elbow far forward. Focus more on keeping by your side.
    None of this will work unless you have a properly timed pivot and soft right arm in the early downswing. Think about how soft your arm is if you are throwing a baseball.

    Does the forearm facing the sky apply to driver as well? It was working very well with my irons, but was blocking or hooking driver.

    • @ryanfagan8503
      @ryanfagan8503 4 роки тому

      Stuart Gould it applies. The block and hook can be attributed to your hips perhaps. Are they quick your getting hung up behind which can produce a block, or a hook because you have turned things over in a attempt to get there. This happens to me and it’s because I get stuck behind cause I have been too aggressive with my hips to start the downswing.

  • @mjb8274
    @mjb8274 5 років тому +2

    Thanks for the 5 elements...well done. One point isn't clear to me regarding..."you need to keep the right forearm up for as long as possible". My question is, "before what?". If you literally do that it seems like you'll either add loft or pull the handle through the hitting area resulting in a weak hold off fade. I think you want to keep the right forearm up until the shaft is parallel to the ground. Between that point and impact I believe you need to rotate your lead forearm down and extend your trail elbow while retaining the bend in your trail wrist, but I'm not sure exactly how you would describe this critical final 90 degrees of club path. I guess it seems a little odd you would end your 5 elements at "keep right forearm up" rather than impact, unless the last step is supposed to happen automatically. Maybe need step 6 to get to the ball?

    • @russellheritagegolf
      @russellheritagegolf  5 років тому

      The idea would be as long as possible and then the left forearm would rotate over to get you back in plane

    Good video on the importance of the right elbow however it is fraught with danger. A quick discussion on too much right side bend/high left shoulder too early and open club face would help.

    For me, out of those five keys, the one I find most difficult to achieve consistently is posture. Videoing my swing, I can see when my posture is really out of whack, and the effect it has on the swing and the ball flight. However, I cannot detect when my posture is slightly off: I will see in the swing that there is some degree of manipulation from the start, but even looking at videos side by side in an app like V1 golf, putting lines in and so forth, I cannot spot the slightly off posture. However, I can feel it. From time to time, when I adress the ball, I feel extremely confortable and tension free. At those times, I just turn back and turn through, feeling no strain nor concious effort. At those times, I do not feel impact (sensation is that I am collecting the ball, not hitting it), the ball flies 10-15% farther than usual with a very slight draw. On video, the swing looks different( like a pro swing, without any indication of anything being manipulated or contrived). On the course, that feeling of comfort often happens on uneven lies and slopes, when I just try to adjust to the situation and do not expect to hit a good shot. I then just swing carelessly and am often surprised by a shot that goes far and straight where I was aiming. I also pitch very well, and most of the time, Ijust select my line and visualize a ball trajectory, make a few practice swings besides the ball just tring to feel how much I have to turn, then go and just do it: 90% of the time, good impact, good trajectory and fairly close to the result I wanted. Could issues with my swing be in my head?

    • @russellheritagegolf
      @russellheritagegolf  5 років тому

      Have I seen your swing before?

    • @michelgrenier9888
      @michelgrenier9888 5 років тому

      Yes you have, and you have reviewed it (thanks for that by the way). On that particular swing that you have reviewed (on a simulator, short white hair guy, wearing black sweat pants with a red line on each leg) my shoulders were way too rounded, the swing was very flat but I still managed to carry 230 yards. The video was taken by my brother as we were playing. This is typical of a situation when I feel that something is off. In that case I was reaching down with my shoulders to bring the club at the right height. This is one of the cases where my posture is so incorrect that it is easy to see on video. I felt that I was reaching with my shoulders, rounding my upper back. But, others are waiting to play, I cannot take five minutes to adjust until it feels right, changing my distance to the ball, the angle of my bend, etc..Thinking of it, when I adress to make a practice swing two inches short of the ball It is fairly easy to get in my posture and make what feels like a good practice swing. I then take my posture again, step two inches forward to adress the ball and it goes all right. If however I try to address the ball directly, I have a much harder time getting into a comfortable posture. Too often it feels contrived, like too much bend or not enough, arms too stretched or too contracted. That is why I think it is in my head because I know from experience that I can physically make a good swing that feels right, looks right and produces good distance and good trajectory

  • @Rich-in6ds
    @Rich-in6ds Рік тому +1

    One thing I don’t understand here is about keeping the elbow bent as long as possible. If you pause someone like tiger at shaft parallel to the ground, his hands are very low and his trail arm is nearly straight. Definitely lots of external rotation so his elbow is tucked and the club head stays behind him but he doesn’t look like he’s keeping the arm bent at all. What’s the reason for the difference? Faster speed?

    • @russellheritagegolf
      @russellheritagegolf  Рік тому

      The degree of arm bend will depend on the location of the right ahoulder

  • @rsg9248
    @rsg9248 5 років тому +1

    Russell: One question: when I keep my trail forearm pointing to the sky during the downswing, I invariably strike the ball with an inside out swing path and an open clubface resulting in a push. Impact feels great, but the ball flies right. Am I missing something? Thank you for your outstanding instruction.

  • @mikeherd5171
    @mikeherd5171 5 років тому +1

    Russell you mentioned “drifting forward”. I’ve videoed my swing and noticed my head drifts forward a little bit in my back swing and my rear end moves the same amount. I feel like I get the pressure in my heal but I can correct this problem. Can you direct me to one of your videos that would help me.

    • @russellheritagegolf
      @russellheritagegolf  5 років тому

      Well if your head is moving this could just be a lateral bend and maybe not a problem. Are the hips moving forward? If so then you need to turn more into the bent leg

    I'm afraid you are mistaken possibly by all those photos of bent right arm on PGA Tour. But in reality all those guys loose that angle in the trailing elbow soon, and quickly. In fact, loosing that angle is one of the first thing they do in the downswing. It's a fact, not my opinion. The trailing elbow should never stay bent in downswing for that club to come down on a correct plane.

  • @peters1139
    @peters1139 3 роки тому

    Nobody seems to talk about the right elbow in the backswing. If you stick it into your body going back, that's a setup for all kinds of problems, particularly a ridiculously flat backswing.. And yet golf instruction harps on keeping the elbow tucked.

    I disagree with this advice. The higher the trail elbow in the backswing, the higher the potential swing speed. Also, I disagree with the idea of keeping the bottom of the forearm pointing at the sky as long as possible in the downswing. That's a recipe for weak slices. Your clubface is completely open when in that position and you'll have to flip violently at the last second to try and fix it. You're better off turning your wrists clockwise at the top before you go into the downswing and get the right palm facing down as you go down into the ball if you want to hit straight and draws.
