Im old enough to have seen a lot of coaches giving swing tips over the years but I must say this is impressive. I fundamentally believe the right arm being led by the elbow is crucial in the downswing and should be taught very early on with anyone learning the game. This move automatically provides lag in club shaft and if your body rotation is good will also help to stop unhinging the wrists too early. The new one for me was throwing the club up and over the right arm then holding the grip which forces the right arm into the correct position. Well done sir!!!!
Sorry for commenting two years too late mate but... your video instantly showed me why I hit a lot of fat shots, even though I had learned how to otherwise shallow the club, and that was because my trail elbow was always going behind me. I've compensated by keeping the trail elbow a bit more tucked in to keep it from moving backward, whilst still keeping the left hand pushing on the handle and thereby keep the lead arm straight. Thanks for a great video! Cheers mate!
That time of year again! I am a 3 hdcp unable to find the couple strokes less needed to become a scratch golfer. I have hit thousands of golf balls each year with lesson upon lesson with no-one addressing my right elbow. Time to start drills. After many videos these are the best drills I have come across to keep my right elbow from throwing off my consistency.
I’ve used a towel or club cover under my trailing arm for a while and it helped very much. But your instruction and drills go so much further and your explanations of how it all times together are priceless. I’m 72 yo, and in five minutes with your trail arm drills my 9i is almost the distance of my 7i previously with half the effort. You’re a great instructor, to the point and easy to understand. Biggest props I’ve seen you use is a stretch band and a ball. How simple is that. 👍 I can hardly wait to get to the range and back on the course.
Great video! I knew I was doing this, plus the early extension. Didn't know the two were related. Interesting that when I keep my right elbow in the correct position I automatically seem to fire my hips more aggressively too. Thanks!
I love these drills. My golf coach gave me the first drill 2 days ago to address my right elbow getting stuck in my side. These are great - especially since I know they target a key swing issue I am trying to fix!
Thank You. This has become the answer for my early extension. Used this concept has my only swing shot for years when I could play to a 10. After reading about getting a wider arch and playing that for many miserable years, I eventually could not use the elbow connection to hip; got me out of sink for years. Finally, this clear explanation puts everything in sync and I am back to hitting the ball like I did 20 years ago!!
I have been a chronic chicken wing guy my whole golfing life. I spent yesterday looking at many videos for ATM rotation. What your video and many others I watched talked about, was the right elbow. This seemed too be something I wanted to try. I went to the range warmed up normally them tried to do drill 1 for feel. Didn't remember drill 2 but I rolled my elbow, palm down. Then brought the club to my right hand parallel to target line. Then took a little more back swing and turned through. After just a few attempts, I was making a more descending blow, divots more forward, and even more carry. Came home and reviewed drill 2 and 3 do I can do them tomorrow. This will be something I am going to stick with and develop. Thank you for posting videos that are very well explained, and demonstrated.
One year later, how effective has this drill been for you in getting that right elbow out in front to flatten the plane?? I'm prepared to perform this drill for upwards of 30 minutes two times a day IF this drill works. Why? Because something tells me drill #1 featured here IS the definitive golf drill to perfect. And if it is, I want to go there. I love ❤️ how when you're turning / pulling the left hand, how a bye product of this movement is that you can FEEL, perhaps for the first time ever, how the left foot cork screws into the ground and naturally builds the left leg post (left leg straightening which becomes the anchor to build a huge amount of centrifugal force in the swing.) Could it be the holy grail of golf drills? I don't know but what I'm gonna do is this. For ten days I'm gonna avoid hitting balls. I'm only going to perform this drill for thirty minutes twice a day. That and more stretching. Then after ten days I'm gonna head to the practice field and hit balls after drilling this drill. 💪
I injured myself probably 25 years ago at the time I was probably a 3 handicap and ever since then I have struggled with this these are three of the best I injured myself probably 25 years ago at the time I was probably a three handicap and ever since then I have struggled with this these are three of the best drills I think I've ever seen
Another great video Jonathan! It would be awesome if you did a weekly/monthly swing review of some of your subscribers to see if there are common swing faults that could help other viewers of your channel
Man I always struggle with the trail arm and have watched many videos/techniques to fix it. Very hard to do but No doubt for me so far the stretch drill without the ball made the biggest difference out of anything I tried. Thanks for the video!
Ok. I apologize. After hitting the lab, ego free, and spending another 30 minutes on drill 2 and 3, you got me! All 3 drills are on point! The Trackman doesn’t lie! Kudos
This drill forces me to depend upon my rotation in order to strike the ball with force. It forces me to be patient about striking the ball. The excitement I felt when I was having problems involved unavoidably pulling the hands down to quicken the club head speed. Hogan never talked about club head speed. He talked about strength in his right hand when smashing the ball. He would have loved to have the strength of three right hands.
Sal Patanio. Once again Great Stuff, but was wondering ,since you went over the Lower Body separation/Left arm close to Chest and now right arm practice, that's 3 swing thoughts. Can just one of the Accomplish all 3? tks again!!
@@neeleshU Love the video and tips and have used them before but I disagree with this part. Really achieves the same purpose. The sleeve if properly used promotes the same triangle as the ball.
As ever great content Jonathan! Can I ask you a question, I’m working on the exact same thing but I seem to be thinning my irons…any suggestions or tips?
That could lead to too much right external shoulder rotation which will cause the right shoulder to move internal in the downswing resulting in a steep shaft. Squeezing in the downswing is ideal
So I've worked on the drills and my iron play had improved dramatically. No weak high fades, all draws. Even 3 wood off deck is much better and a draw. But, my driver is very low hook. Worked on grip, changed driver settings. Any thoughts? Thanks
We don’t think much about the sweet spot on the clubs today. The clubs have a much bigger sweet spot than clubs made fifty years ago. But if we are to conform to proper form we must get the full potential of the clubs power. We still need to hit the ball in a particular spot on the club face. The spot is still the size of a dime. The created forgiveness on today’s clubs allows the weekend warriors to get off more good shots. To swing like a pro we have to hit the exact spot on the club head.
Thanks Jonathon! Must admit I bounce around watching heaps of golf tuition channels! But you are the only one who has had a drill for straightening the left (front) arm in the swing using the ball between the arms ! I could see that all the golf pros had that straight arm but you are the only one who has addressed that. Great to see that drill can help me with a few issues! As a beginner golfer in lockdown it is good to be able to progress my tuition! 👍👍👍🏌️♀️
This video is the best on drills for the right elbow..no other comes close..Great stuff and thanks..👍👍

Aloha from Hawaii. Great drill. I will use the first one while standing around at my house.
Great to hear! Absolutely, the first drill is perfect for at home 👍🏼

wonder if i can use an elastic strap linking the upper arms to subsitute for the deflated ball?
I wouldn’t recommend that as that will restrict natural movement
@@jchowngolf thanks

Slow down your downswing and make sure you don't lift your head before hitting the ball.
I'd move to England just for the golf coaches! Chown, Elliott, Shiels, Heritage, Ryan, I know I'm leaving alot out.
Danny Maude
Hi Jon - on the 3rd drill when you squeeze the elbows together in the downswing, could I squeeze the arms in backswing instead?
That could lead to too much right external shoulder rotation which will cause the right shoulder to move internal in the downswing resulting in a steep shaft. Squeezing in the downswing is ideal
@@jchowngolf Thanks, Jon! Much appreciated
Is that forbe mat u use any good
It is indeed 👍🏼
Is that a large ball - 7 inches? I saw one of those, but they have 3 different sizes. You want the right elbow to get in front of the ball?
So I've worked on the drills and my iron play had improved dramatically. No weak high fades, all draws. Even 3 wood off deck is much better and a draw. But, my driver is very low hook. Worked on grip, changed driver settings. Any thoughts?

Driver has to hit up. Try inverted K
where can I purchase that ball ?
Golftrainingaids.com 👍🏼
I do the elbow forward and it causes me to hit right of right
Make sure your club face is square earlier in your swing 👍🏼
Every time I try keeping my right elbow in i hit the ball to the right or slice
If one could excel this move, a lot of good things happened in the downswing. 👍🏽
It certainly would 🤙🏻
And keep the right arm tight can fix golfer's elbow, my experience.
😁👍

why does every other golf trainer and the pros.. keep the trailing elbow into their side..and you extend the elbow out..away from your body?
