Great explanation, very practical, no clickbait magic move ideas or silver bullets. Just proper mechanics and hard work. That's why I love this channel.
This is an incredible lesson I just learned today and I am a 2 handicap. Pinching the elbow has me flushing the ball. I have more muscle than most golfers and when I tried to squeeze the forearms like Hogan I had less than 3/4 backswing. With this, I get my hands high and squeeze the elbow and let that determine the rest. This is an UNDERRATED lesson! Subscribed.
That is the best lesson on all of You Tube, to stop coming over the top on downswing. Played golf all my life (74) and have never had a transition like this. Hitting the ball with much more power and ease. Thank you so much from Scotland. Well done Eric.
Great advice. Saw it before as well. One other thing that can help is to squeeze the elbows slightly together at address and keep them that way in the backswing. Your arms will be straighter. Often when players try to relax as they address the ball both arms bend a bit at the elbow and the upper arms and elbows separate from the torso. This tends to make the right forearm more horizontal instead of vertical at the end of the backswing which puts the right elbow behind the wrist and hands on the downswing, the opposite of what you want.
As someone who is left-handed at single handed sports and right-handed at double handed sports, I have been trying to understand how to initiate the down-swing for 45 years. I now know, Thank you! 👍
Thanks as always Eric, would be nice to get some insight of the movement from the transition from the top of the backswing to start of downswing, as it seems like an ackward two movement proceedure to get the right elbow to lead? The 2 movement procedure also includes using your video/suggestion of pointing the trail palm away from you at the top of the backswing. Hope I made some sense.....? Would not be the 1st time if not 😂

Have been learning from you for some time Eric with a note pad almost full of your teachings. Thank you for your response and attempt to understand my question. What is not clear to me is, in order to get the club hip high from the top with bent right elbow etc what is the proper move from P4 to P6? Does the "engine" from the top come from the hips to start the backswing, the shoulders, the left arm/shoulder or the other? Understand we don't want to throw the arms down to P6 and should start slowly. Hit 200 balls today and f
What a Great session Eric. Thaks for taking it out of mothballs. You always show me something helpful. Thanks for all you give to my game. Be good.-Russ
Awesome Eric. I was giving this a try and can totally feel the difference even in practice swings. I was visualizing the boney area on the leading side of elbow being pulled in front of my belly button so that it would lead the rest of arm with wrist trailing behind.
Does thinking to supinate your right forearm during the downswing help? I've been doing this in slow motion in my living room and it does seem to promote both a bent back right wrist and right elbow in front and leading.
Great video Eric. My question going to be how do I get the club face closed. Using a stronger grip or something else but you said you'd provide a link for do that but I don't see one or is that the next video named compression secret? Thanks/
I have the exact same issue, my right arm has that bowed look pre impact… going to try those feels and drills tomorrow, then record the swings to see if I can fix that early release..
Hey! Yeah you definitely need to transfer weight.....that would be completely separate from this trail arm movement. If you do the weight transfer automatically (like some) then no need to think of it. Hey good question.....yeah....it depends some on the grip type. Weaker grip that would work better to help close face. Hi Eric your videos are great but I watch the slow-motion videos of the LPGA players and it looks like none of them have the right elbow at the midline prior to impact are they using a different method method thanks for your help Kylie advise Jack
Hey Jack! The slower the speed the less forward the elbow. So if you watch the highest speed guys on PGA they will have it most forward....LPGA slower speed so a bit less forward (but certainly still not too far back! )

I worked on this at the range today, then found this video and now I feel more confident I am on the right path. Great explanation, demonstration, and concepts. Thank you!
I struggled with this move until I realised that it was much easier when i produced enough downward presssure on the club handle in the lower half of the swing to counterbalance the weight of the club head otherwise it felt like it was pulling my right elbow from my rib cage. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience.
Impossible to do if your trail hip comes forward too early. You need proper hip movement (chair behind the butt drill) to be able to come down with your trail elbow in front of you.
When I watch this type of video showing the importance of the trail arm, I get concerned. Iam a lefty who is right arm dominant so my right arm is far stronger than my trail arm. I wonder if this is a hindrance to making good golf shots.
I don’t understand the bad part. No one ever looks like that ever. Maybe 80 year olds. I get you’re exaggerating a position, but what position? I have a horrible early extension problem and have been trying for years to lead with my right elbow. Never have I ever looked like your “bad” position. Ever. I don’t get it. Hey Toby---could be! I would need to see your swing to say for sure.
Could be aimed right, ball too far back, path too far in to out, etc
probably all of the above! Tried again today and I think I was leaving the release a little too late, hence squirting it right@@CogornoGolf

Eric can you get a launch monitor so we can see the ball flight!😂

When I started playing golf many moons ago, nobody talked about the right elbow and shaft lean.
Better late than never :)
Doesn't the right shoulder help with getting that elbow leading. That's my feel I focus on the shoulder coming down per Pete Cowen
For sure---its all related
Impossible to do if your trail hip comes forward too early. You need proper hip movement (chair behind the butt drill) to be able to come down with your trail elbow in front of you.

We talked about that in most recent video here:

Try practice swings with right hand only. The right elbow has to lead naturally.
