Please cover James Ferraro’s work. He’s very prolific and his music is quite influential in the underground music scene, especially vaporwave and hypnagogic pop. Also, Dean Blunt would be an interesting artist to cover.
can't blame him for not because how could one even begin to sufficiently cover james discography without turning it into a series of like at least five episodes of an hour each
it is worth noting that rifts not only takes from the three albums but a handful of other eps he released, such as fall into time and drawn and quartered, and didn’t feature every piece but rather a curated selection of cuts from each project, resulting in (to many id imagine) a more holistic sampler of his spacey synth aesthetic at the time, as well as perhaps a more consistent grade of quality, even if the mood and theme varied somewhat between each record pulled from.
"Angel and Nobody Here actually appear on this album as well, though they're pitched slightly lower." and that's because I still don't think the cassette rip everyone knows of this album is at the correct speed. I think the rip you can find off Vapor Memory's UA-cam channel is much more accurate to them and the whole album in general.
Good point, I’ve seen it uploaded at so many different speeds and ur prob right ab the vapor memory upload being the closest to the original, I’ve j heard the 55 minute version thrown around the most and have listened to it more than any of the others (and personally prefer most of the tracks in that speed with maybe a few exceptions like B6) but I appreciate u pointing that out
I can't really vibe to most of OPNs music except for the sunsetcorp stuff, but damn, you make really good video essays. This channel deserves at least 20× the subscribers it has right now 👍👍👍
Love OPN. To answer your last question, I think it's Brian Eno. Invented the ambient genre then produced albums for... everybody, lol. We owe a lot to Eno!
rifts and eccojam are some of the most captivating ambient projects in a while.. hell when i look at acts people compare to 0PN (huerco S, Terry Riley, William Basinski, gas) i just don't feel the same hypnotic and emotional power that daniel can put into his songs though my favorite is probably garden of delete for being this glitchy euphoric mix of adolescent rage, feeling almost like it was made by the radical adolescent who 0PN claimed to be doing an interview
He first came to my radar when he signed to Warp and released R+7 (ten years ago last week or so … good grief, we’re all getting old). It would be several more years until I would hear the vapour and adjacent scenes, but looking back it did start with this album for me. Because of this and more, I consider Daniel Lopatin to be my moniker’s godfather (キラヨシ) Thank you for shouting out the second half of A3.
I've talked to him, and exchanged a gentleman's handshake back during the Garden of Delete touring days at EMPAC in 2015. Was a wild show, and he's a chill dude. I'd love to see something on the Ford x Lopatin collab Channel Pressure one day
Looking back on this, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Channel Pressure. It’s another Joel Ford collab that feels like a more sizable version of the Games EP. Really good stuff.
Amazing video! I also want to give you props for using parts from Dam Son's video who made a visual version of eccojams that skips with the music. That dude did such an amazing job capturing the essence of eccojams and expressing them visually alongside the music. Especially using the old anime VIdeo Girl Ai for the JoJo track (which i agree 100% is the best on the whole album). The other one I really like is the last track on the A side, the sample from Woman in Chains. Great shit.
I got into Lopatin during the Games that we can play era. That EP was mesmerizing , and I soon purchased a Roland Juno and got heavily into synth music. I think OPN is his most important project musically , but it’s crazy that he basically invented an entire genre of music with a side project - Chuck Person and Vaporwave.
I see a lot of folks in the comments speaking on the fact opns music is difficult to consume. I agree. But listen a few times, if you care to, and it hits hard. Not trying to convince anyone to like it, but for me it left a major impact in terms of how I think of music. I think of it as sample jazz almost. Sounds stupid lol but it goes hard when you let go of the context of the original sample. To be an annoying art nerd, I think he’s doing the Marcel Duchamp of our generation. Try out replica or R plus 7. They are weird as shit but I love it. Thanks for the review and video!
Pretty good sparknotes on this guy, first heard of him by seeing the Still Life music video (super nsfw/nsfl) and now listened to his Again LP, and saw him live in DC this year. What do you think that release?
Did I see it right when in the video when you included the cover of Cosmogramma when talking about stuff he worked on? I cant find credits of him from that album.
Describing Africa by Toto as "bubblegum" is a really weird take. I always felt like it had an air of navel gazing faux intellectualism that made it an absolute dirge of a song to listen to.
Uncut Gems had the worst movie score I've heard in my life. The actors had to yell over it to be heard during the movie. Daniel Lopatin needs to never score music for a movie again. My ears felt assaulted by that awful random garbage.
had NO IDEA that this guy created Replica, scored Uncut Gems and CREATED VAPORWAVE alongside all this other amazing shit. amazing video
I'm always going to comment that he didn't invent vaporwave and was basically influenced by what the skaters/James Ferraro were doing for years.
I have to sorry.
We need a guide to Tim Hecker's music! 🤓
PLEASE
please!
YES PLS

duuuude what id do for that series
ferraro vid is out!
Oneohtrix Point Never is so good I own a bulk of his discog. I even have the 2012 reissue of Rifts, which (in my opinion) is one of his best works
it is worth noting that rifts not only takes from the three albums but a handful of other eps he released, such as fall into time and drawn and quartered, and didn’t feature every piece but rather a curated selection of cuts from each project, resulting in (to many id imagine) a more holistic sampler of his spacey synth aesthetic at the time, as well as perhaps a more consistent grade of quality, even if the mood and theme varied somewhat between each record pulled from.
you covered the other eps the main point was what i said later

Eccojams, R plus 7 and Garden of delete are my favorite,
Ps. I love the pirated iPod vibe you talk about.
Also, I miss the old iPhone layout too.
James ferraro vid pls
OPN doesn’t get enough credit for G of D and how much the album preempted hyperpop
An incomplete guide to cardiacs would be amazing
this is video is wonderful
Great video! I'm wondering though, why didn't you mention Love in The Time of Lexapro? It seems like a really impactful album in his career.

Yeah, it sucks.
