Really? I personally found it incredibly distracting and somewhat obnoxious. I usually love that synthy kinda 70s/80s prog sound in films, but this one just didn't feel right for the film to me. Especially in the beginning where it just goes on and on at a higher volume than the dialogue for something like the first 10 minutes. I liked the film quite a bit but the soundtrack almost ruined it for me. I did like what he did for "good time". I am glad other people really liked it though as the composer is obviously very talented and I'm sure he worked quite hard on the film.
He's said in the past he doesn't want to score a sci-fi film because he thinks it would be to obvious with his style and he prefers to challenge himself.
There’s a UA-cam video on Dolby’s channel I think that talks about the sound, or maybe another interview, but they mention Vangelis and his improvisation specifically.

@ayyy__donkey just the thought of that made me melt then again benny safdie is supposed to appear in a new paul thomas anderson film so maybe he brings daniel along?
Safdies are already one of my favorite american filmmakers but I have to say it's kind of strange how "cool" they are right down to the opn and ariel pink soundtracks
Holy shit. That is a room of holy grail synths. I seriously can’t even pay attention to what he’s saying, I’m just in awe. I’m just adding up the prices of those gorgeous vintage pieces on the wall, like that Juno. I really love Lopatin’s scores. I feel like he added a ton of atmosphere, and completely created the tone of Good Time, and although I didn’t like Uncut Gems as much as Good Time, his soundtrack is incredible. He reminds me a lot of the soundtracks Cliff Martinez does, esp in Drive. It would be awesome to have the 2 of them collab sometime. He really is as important as the Safdies, in his role , and ability to completely drive the narrative along. Uncut Gems was so tense from beginning to end, and I think he did an amazing job of both heightening the tension, and holding back , using more calm, steady tones as the chaos onscreen became insane. Really talented guy. The song he did w Iggy Pop on vocals “The Pure and the Damned” that played over that incredibly powerful, emotional ending of Good Time, was an absolute master stroke in scoring such an emotional, pivotal scene. Glad to see him getting more attention.
Oh man, a cassette rack! One thing I loved about tapes is the (mostly) enforced geometric order. CDs eventually starting shipping in all kinds of weird boxes and sizes that wouldn't fit in racks with slots and I had to switch to shelves. (Haha…who am I talking to?)
First off Kudos to Moog for always creating authentic videos and never shying away from showing that musicians have other brand name synths in their studios besides just Moog. I love honesty. I really loved this video and couldn't get enough of it. Such beautiful sounds. I am an aspiring composer and will be scoring games or movies someday soon. There's nothing like sitting in a room by yourself and creating beautiful sounds that move you and hopefully others. I can't quite fit a One in my budget yet, but should have a Matriarch in my hands within the next 6 months.Awesome job on the soundtrack.
Hey dude, I'm in the same field. An up-and-coming composer/sound designer hoping to work on the music for films and games. Always cool to meet someone in the same career path.

Saw Uncut Gems in theaters a few weeks ago and as soon as the synth soundtrack started, I knew I was in for a treat. The first and last scenes 'through the colors' are amazing and the moogs sounded so good in the theaters
There is a reverb effect on Daniel lopatins synth lines - about 1:25 in for instance and all over replica - I’ve been trying to identify it. It’s almost gated , more ethereal than a typical room reverb. Anyway, his production skills are unparalleled and anytime he has a new project, I’m there.
i see a lot of love for Akira here and i wanted to point yall to the record "Capsule's Pride" by Bwana. not sure what you'd call it - it's not a new OST but it uses and changes all the music from Akira and is gorgeous. it's kinda deceptive, starts out with a mostly traditional (but excellent) house vibe and holy shit does it evolve. some of the tracks on there still give me chills 4 years after release and countless listens. highly recommend it, i actually heard it before i saw Akira oddly enough.
Movie was great! I'm obsessed with the soundtrack ever since, great work mr Lopatin! Sounds like Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Wendy Carlos, Mort Garson, Joel Fajerman, Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis and a few others were there in spirits during the studio sessions.
This is a top 3 film for me, in no small part thanks to this extraordinary score. Even after this video, I don't understand how Daniel could have possibly produced a set of sounds that so accurately matched the ineffable, subconscious micro-emotions that flow so naturally with the visuals, story, facial expressions... and it's not like he honed in on one particular "feeling"; the film contains a massively dynamic range of INTENSE emotions. The music is a perfect symbolic description of the raw emotions associated with what's present on the screen. This score and OPN more broadly is one reason I've come to recognize the immense potential contained within music.

Beautiful soundtrack. I had to look this up after I watched the movie because I thought it was Japanese composer Tomita. Oh how I miss his work. Great job guys, nicely done!
First video that actually makes me want to own a Moog One, sound-wise. Well done Moog. Fascinating video as well. I know I'm gonna watch the movie, if only for the soundtrack. Lots of classical Vangelis vibes in there, but with a modern twist. Great stuff.
it was the BEST soundtrack in 2019. it was ORIGINAL and fresh breath of air. you can tell what Oscars really stand for. UNCUT GEMS is the real BEST FILM , BEST SOUNDTRACK, BEST cinematography, BEST EDITING, BEST ACTING.... no other film comes even close.
This soundtrack is one of the greatest things I've ever heard in my life, combined with the visuals of this film it seriously blew me away. It's ethereal and weightless, it just hit a button for me, one of my top 5 movies of all time.
The vibe of the movie and this music really jive each other so much that it brings me to a world that i dont really know much about..w/c is the world of howard ..it almost gives a hint that makes me feel that his world is going downward spiral and suddenly hope arrives.but actually no because it was meant to be..

Nice to see. Not aware of this film but have to watch it now just because of the music. Would be fun hearing more about how the team came up with the idea of having that very high contrast in styles, a film like this would usually have orchestrated music. Great job of the director and team deciding to go with this score. I would probably never watch this movie if it wasn't for the score. Well done.
OPN is amazing. Definitely heavily influenced the success of gems and good time. Safdies and Daniel are perfect duo for encapsulating the vibe
What is opn? I keep seeing that word when I research this movies soundtrack

Very late reply but OPN stands for "Onenohtrix Point Never" Daniel Lopatin himself, it's his stage name.
This movie actually started with Adam Sandler getting a colonoscopy

Cr9
It actually started with a guy injuring his leg looking for opals.
It started in africa we were well into the movie by that point
Film Toppings 😭😂😂
It's a crying shame that this soundtrack wasn't even nominated for best original score. It's easily one of the best of 2019.
the main theme is basically a cover of “adios” by weather report, it isn’t quite original

Didn't that get cancelled?
Praise god... right where my heads at... I think the Safdies could do it well too
