Daniel Lopatin, operating as Oneohtrix Point Never, makes music that seemingly defies categorization. The son of Russian immigrants and professional musicians, Lopatin’s work is loosely connected to the noise circuit, but also draws influences from library records, jazz-fusion and his love-hate relationship with new age music.
In his lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, Lopatin discusses his musical background, his megalomania, his fear of being railroaded by drums and why he loves his old Juno 60 synthesizer.

“I don't think music needs to be music to be musical, or be music.” -Daniel Lopatin, 2012
I don't think being alive needs being alive for being alive, or being alive
I agree anything can be music to some degree

If it sounds good than it is good
most important electronic artist of this generation
THE most important pope in all of history period
He's not Trent Reznor obviously, but yeah, probably one of the most important
@@kajetanpielach3967 He said this generation
obviously he's not Richard D. James. But yes.
thank you Mr. Pope
What he says about 20 minutes in is so relatable to me. Always listened to textures, and i can listen to a song 5,000 times and i have no idea what the words are.
"Well early... depends on when I die I guess"
I love this guy so much
I get that the interviewer does this with loads of artists but a simple Google search would've cleared that up
He had me laughing at several points. Probably one of the most down to earth artists I’ve ever seen. I loved this. ✌🏼
What's wrong with people here arguing about interviewer? Are they all from US? That not Ellen show or buzzfeed, this is not about entertainment. This interview is completely fine.
Why are Red Bull people so tired?
They need more redbull
They drank it too early before the show and are crashing :3
I assume that it's by design and I appreciate the irony.
This is mind blowing question
Ahahaha I laughed
Dan seems like one of those really cool guys who can both sit and have a totally casual, friendly, bullshit chat, but also super-deep hours-long discussions about metaphysics and shit.
Like someone who is humble and honest on the surface and has a lot going on behind the scenes.
I like people like that.
Rare folks

1:18:51 This is argued by many to be the founding track that started the genre of Vaporwave, all the way back from 2009. Daniel's impact on modern music is profoundly underrated.
Maybe not profoundly underrated, I think people who know of him recognize him for the genius he is. No doubt that Daniel is an incredible musician, but vaporwave is kinda dead at this point, ruined by the many that tried (and failed) to recreate what he did. OPN has moved onto way bigger and better things.
what about devon hendryx
It really hits my nerve with this guy the inerviewer he doesn't ask questions in regards to Eccojams, Music, or Chuck Person. He unlocked an entire music genre! 🎶
George Clanton is currently still beating this dead horse and it’s a bit embarrassing
@@halfdonut6505 like most songs in the top 40 don't have recognizable samples/interpolations. it's the logical next step in the whole tape music -> sound collage -> and now vaporwave evolution using recorded music as an instrument. incredibly influential to the cultural consciousness. hip hop sampling was a sort of inbetween state, and the explosion of vaporwave really opened up a lot of people's ideas of interpolation and music based on nostalgia
This guy and Tim Hecker are legend!
42:53 Legendary shot @cameraman
i love this
hahaha, totally fits the OPN vibe
What do you think he’s thinking about?
im fucking dying
:OPNthink:
loved this interview. I think this was really genuine, not everyone is this vivacious -tv-personality that needs to be cracking jokes every other remark. As a fellow artist you can tell a lot is going on in his mind and he tries his best to articulate it in an insightful and inspiring way. He's not trying to be anything he isn't and I respect that way more than some producer trying to act omniscient in social interaction. This isn't Jimmy Kimmel Live guys...
will realms this
+will realms I'm actually surprised at how open he is. His music is just so "out there" that I would have expected him to be a more odd, quiet type.
wr4 Daniel Lopatin seems so in touch with his mental faculties, as if his knack for evaluation is constantly refining his momentary decisions with such a pace that he just knows better than to "just say it". That's so commendable. I think it's that kind of tenacity which sculpts true greatness. In the words of the man himself, "I don’t think there’s ever a moment where I’m just like, yeah, that’ll work... everything’s really naked and in clear view (in his compositions) so I want it to be very specific. When I make a decision, I want to have a sense of why even if I don’t necessarily want to tell people why."
It seems like he was the right interviewer for someone like Dan to me
is this comment about the interviewer or Lopatin himself?
I relate so much when he says that looking for certain gear and trying to get a sound is stressful. It’s called option paralysis. You have so many choices that you don’t know where to start.
Last night I wanted to make music but I just ended up sitting in front of my gear for like an hour stressing about how I'm gonna route everything once I get my next synth, instead of just making music lol, that part felt like a personal attack
"You put up a bunch of youtube clips on my computer and I don't know what any of them are." Christ, this guy sounds like my roommate.
In this era- why did Red Bull interview so many ambient artists?
Seems like an interesting strategy for a company that sells energy drinks.
That is actually a fantastic question.. my best guess is a) they realized the electronic / ambient music genre as a whole is seeing a resurgence these last few years and they want to keep their content topical and accessible, and b) electronic / ambient music is often deceivingly intricate, so Red Bull is using these sort of examples to demonstrate the mental alertness / clarity effects that they promote in Red Bull ads/commercials/etc. But that is purely speculation on my part.
It's not so much ambient as much as it is niche music in general. Red Bull's massive endowment gives them a lot of power to sponsor creative real estate all the way down to the more obscure stuff. Same goes for sports--they're one of the biggest sponsors in action sports or ping pong or whatever else outside of the mainstream soccer / football / etc. Smart strategy on their part considering niche tends to grow into something bigger with time. They're getting their money's worth for sure
Which other ambient artist are interviewed? Would like to see them! I’ve watched the Brian Eno one, so good!!
They clocked on eventually...the academy shut down in 2019, unfortunately...
@@pigammon7843 Big bummer
this interview is so wonderfully awkward and comfortable at the same time
almost like its scripted by some very talented person
Love this interview in more ways than one. The intelligent insight and the unintentionally funny moments like the trivial pursuit Thing and the way Dan stares into the void as Returnal plays.
7:54 OH MY GOD. When he mentioned the Sega Genesis Mario Andretti racing game, a shit ton of childhood memories that I had completely forgotten came searing back through my brain.. It wasn't a great game, but for some reason I loved playing it in the morning before school. It's crazy how one little mental image or passing reference can totally unlock so many memories and emotions. I am a grown ass man trying to type this out with tears in my eyes. Unbelievable. I know it's an odd comment but I absolutely had to share it with somebody.
Agreed👍
wow
"loop it. slow it down. add some echo to it. it's easy, anyone can do it, not mine... to do..."
totally missed this when i first watched it
this is the most 2011 audience I've ever seen
Daniel's point about not letting the variety of gear available rule your creation is very wise. And something I'm currently struggling with in my own music creation. Timestamp around 20:00
16:08 I couldn't stop laughing at that girl falling asleep in the back.
KissyBurns
This interview is just hilarious, I can see it being edited as cringe video.
god damn, so happy he touched on the naming of his tracks. Been one of my favourite aspects of the OPN project is how rich and evocative the names for literally all his stuff is, and how it aids to immerse me more in the world the song creates for me.
"Sleep Dealer", "Behind The Bank", KGB Nights", "Lovegirls Precinct", "Time Decanted", "Undercover Firefighter", the list goes on.
+Alain Rocha Sleep Dealer was also a made for tv scifi movie apparently
Mr Lopatin has come a long way guys. Now having won the best film soundtrack in Cannes and this film is in the race to win a possible Oscar nod.
@ 41:11 OPN goes in to a deep, intense trance during "Returnal."
{xXx~*hatchetjob§*~xXx} that's the album in a nutshell
"fake counterpoint" Im in love with this human
I love when Nassau comes on and he just goes into a daze :3
Woah, I didn’t notice when I heard this years ago he references Legowelt (30min) as a major influence. His aliases and soundtrack records like the Klaus Kinski EP are some of my favorite records. It’s cool to know that possibly my two most listened to artists have this connection👉🏼👈🏼
the interviewer comes across as a Bill Hader satirical character. i feel like he should be describing french art films in the 70’s.
24:54-25:06 The strange and hilarious dynamic between these two men who appear to be lost in their own unique way.
genus
I laughed the entire time in that track
Being high af:
The paranoid and the viber
genuinely fascinating stuff. Very insightful
Funny to see how a guy who could be expected as sophisticated, ambitious, probably as eloquent as avant-garde artists are about their own work, and he just looks like a bored, stoned trucker. THAT'S THE SPIRIT, MATE! THAT'S THE TRUE PUNK!
On the other, you just watch the guy sitting there peacefully and thanking everyone, and you just want to give him a hug.
eselsdistel was this worth typing its corny af...
He looks literally exactly how I imagined him after listening to his music.
This was actually really great. Totally not the type of personality I was expecting, given his music. He’s incredibly down to earth, pretty much reminds me of myself and my friends group in my early/mid 20s. Seems like the type of dude you could walk up to with a joint, and he’d be down to smoke one and talk for 20 minutes. Really really cool dude. ✌🏼
aww man that first track is incredible
It really surprised me that only a few people had questions. If I were there I'd be raising my hand so fast.
1:34:42 He talks about his video "Nobody Here" i been waiting a question like that finally.
I can't take my eyes off of the Red Bull logo...
+RadonX9 they gotcha
+RadonX9 i think its binoculars
Stoe Rile When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back...
It's like watching Laugh Factory... with that big stupid logo in the background...
i thought that too. it's tripping me out
i absolutely love how exhausted everyone in the audience is
21:44 The value of limitation to your own creativity & focus.
23:55 "depends when I die" track
42:12 it's okay dan, we're here for you
BigKahunaShake I lol'd irl
BigKahunaShake lmao. Was that 'scene' some kind of joke? Him hyperventilating followed by the dolly zoom made me forget this was an actual person being interviewed. Like a psychotic nightmare
I didn't notice him hyper ventilating but Kel Varsen approves
lifeanddecay watch it again with that in mind. His breathing is heavy and slows down, then he kinda looks away like he's lost in though, followed by the dolly zoom. Reminds me of a real life tim and eric scene
Art Vandelay Man I think this is a little different than the original RBMA cut because I do not remember if focusing on him for that long. It 's definitely a bit awkward, but interviews tend to be.
it's so interesting hearing him say drums limit him after listening to Magic OPN, or even Age Of. He's expanded his percussion a ton
And Garden of Delete too
Percussion and drums aren’t exactly the same
best rbma lecture hands down
+David Sabethai for me tied in first place with the james murphy one
I don't know why but this is reminding me of being at Mutek in Montreal. Sitting around listening to experimental techno and electronic of every stripe. In a theatre setting with around a hundred people Seeing Hauschka play a prepared piano at the SAT in Montreal. Listening to electronic musicians. We watched the guy putting aluminum foil and ping png balls into the piano to change the tones of the keys and then jamming out totally entertainingly for an hour.
great talk! I think Ontrx is brilliant. seems like a real good bloke.
Get Arca on here.
oh hell yes pls
he hates redbull tho i think
because he's so fucking gay
fuck off
I think we are talking about his music not about his sexuality
He mentioned T Dolby, who is exactly who I was thinking of when listening to parts of 'age of'.
real cool to hear lopatins thought's on his work. funny i too thought he'd be this avant garde mysterious dude but he seems pretty down to earth. I also thought it was interesting how he said that some of his song titles are like a joke to him. cos damn his shit sounds serious to me!
1:02:53 little hand
Bust out the big bucks to get Robbie Chater (of The Avalanches) on the program!
pretty sure every opn fan watches this at least once a week
i watched the whole thing, thank you
Pretty funny to see how this was filmed over a year after Eccojams/Suncorp came out, but it's so modestly addressed here, because it wasn't remotely as significant then as it is today.
OPN has been a very slow burn for me but I've really started to get into his stuff over the last year. I also really like his attitude:)
THIS INTERVIEWER IS PROBABLY THE REASON WE HAVE SO FEW OPN INTERVIEWS
He asked insightful, interesting questions and is clearly a fan. If he doesn't do interviews it's cause of weirdos like you
So many sleeping on this legend.
Every time I hear Lopatin's voice I think of Jonah Hill lol
i didn't know what he sounded like until now, but he LOOKS like jonah hill
Biopic waiting to be made.
That Rousseau (Rousseaux?) influence is pretty key of what OPN's music portrays if you think about it

the interviewer could have a bit more personality, but he carried out the interview very well. Great lecture.
It’s how normal people speak to each other
Yinz should check out his Song Exploder episode for Sticky Drama. He breaks down how he writes the songs and it’s really cool
Mikey Taylor true, he’s and John Hopkins episodes on song Exploder is really cool and inspiring.

I am not sure what Lapotin stands for he is too cool and indifferent. All feelings towards him I owe to my reverence for his music, but thank him dearly for this musical morsel.
everyone is so sleepy.. is this how red bull works?
After 6 months yes.
I am an addict now. I am so sleepy until I drink 1 or two energy drinks, and I drink it to be normal. It's been 3 years I drink more than 8 coffe/energy drink on daily basis. If I don't drink it or after one or two hours I've drinken it I feel really depressed and apathetic. I've also some hearth problem, sometimes I see everything black and without oxygen. Coffeine made my habit of going to sleep at 6.30 A.M. When I am with friends at night they know that I am gonna drink a coffee or become a zombie so often someone used take some coffee in a thermos. No I bought coffeine pills to avoid this problem. Don't ever abuse, those are just little problems I can still live a decent life but trust me don't abuse of it.
@@archiviovideo1854 hey are you ok brother how have you been holding up

I sweat to god, I feel like the audience had better questions than the interview, he looked like he didn’t even give a shit, luckily Daniel has a personality but omfg, he’s lucky that Daniel kinda went on tangents or this shit would have been so short
