For me the message behind this song is simple: The only thing that matters is how we treat each other. Life is short. Don't spend it hating. Don't spend it angry. Love hard. Love strong. No matter what you believe, now matter how you live, our #1 purpose is to love each other. This entire album (Threat to Survival) was great and very deep.
Side note: While their music is secular, I do believe the band themselves identifies as Christian. I have a live DVD of theirs that shows the band do a prayer together before they take the stage.

"It's not what you believe" I think he's talking about religion in a sense. It doesn't matter about what you believe in Christian, Jewish, etc. It's about showing and giving love to everyone. No matter your beliefs.

That’s how I look at it too. The full line that’s getting left out is that part of the chorus says “It's not what you believe those prayers will make you bleed
But while you're on your knees” and then poses the titular question again. So how I’ve always viewed those lyrics is about how people can get caught up in their beliefs, such as religion and don’t accept differences of opinions.

    • @Stromthetruth1111
      @Stromthetruth1111 5 років тому +10

Daniel Cardenas I agree. He says “It’s not what you believe, those prayers will make you bleed” meaning religion isn’t love. Which is obvious. Cause all wars are religion based.

"How Did You Love is about understanding and respecting your own mortality. Not in a morbid, negative way, but in a way that inspires you to live each day to its fullest and without regret, especially when it comes to your relationships and your individuality. You need to be at peace and proud when you look back and ask yourself, 'how did you love?'"
    Lead Vocalist, Shinedown Brent Smith

The full lyric is "It's not what you believe, those prayers will make you bleed, but while you're on your knees, how did you love" In my opinion, Brent is talking about religions, and how no matter what you believe in, there are still people who will disagree with you.
Break it down and look at it this way, "It's not what you believe, those prayers will make you bleed". To some, it may sound like he's bashing religions, but I think, that he's saying to take into account others religions before bashing them. As seen in the past, division in the world due to religious differences is very common. and while I am not trying to sound negative about them, it's not unknown that people have died because of those difference. It sounds, to me, like a cry to be more accepting and understanding of those difference.
NOW, looking at the next part "But while you're on your knees, how did you love" This is a straightforward question, when you, as the listener, are at your most humblest points; and I mean humblest in the manner of when you are either alone with your thoughts or praying or things of that nature, do you think about how you were to those around you throughout the day? For example, were you less polite to someone based on how they dressed, or because they were of a different religion than you? Did you love them any less than you would have loved someone who agreed with your way of thinking?
Again, this is just my take on the song lyrics, whether it's similar to the band's or not. I, for one, love Shinedown and think they are an amazing group. If possible, would you consider doing another song by them? I am interested in hearing your opinions on their song 'GET UP' off their newest album "ATTENTION ATTENTION"

After taking so many innocents, this is the first time I see these type of people in total fear, preying and shaking, hoping in old age they dont burn forever.
      They didnt love.

Love is what it’s all about. I have raised my husband’s 2 children. They do not belong to me. But I am their Mother. I have been there when someone else wasn’t. I hope and pray that when I’m dead and gone, my 2 kids will say, you know what…Mom was always there. She never ran out on us, or let us down and she always loved us. Even when we were rough on her. That’s what I think of when I hear this song. And it’s one of my faves from Shinedown.
“I’ll Follow You Down” is another favorite of mine from Shinedown. It’s mine and my husband’s song. One of our faves. ✌🏻❤️from Texas.

Shinedown is one of my all time favorites. I've known them for 5 or 6 years now, since their Amaryllis album. From then I've been a huge fan of them. Like one of guys said, they do have distinct sound to them. The band does write their own music, Brent Smith, the lead singer, is the lead writer. They are all good hearted men who care about each other, their families & their fans as well. "Unity" is my all time favorite from them, and I've heard it live the almost 6 times I've seen them. They're just so so good ❤

To me "It's not what you believe" refers to your personal views...your personal, religious or political beliefs, etc.... because in the end what people remember most about you is who you were as a person.
I think the song is trying to get you to ask yourself what kind of person are you and how will you be remembered. Did u treat people well, did you show love, kindness, compassion, did you bring them joy and leave happy memories.....or did you let your differences and prejudices get in the way of that

Brent Myers and Zach Myers (who write most of the songs) are Christians. Zach Myers actually helps out Christian rock bands, though Myers has some songs he's written with cussing. Idk about the others. This song when it first came out, people actually thought it was a Christian song. The band is also known for being good friends with Skillet, a Christian rock band I'm sure you've heard of. I'm a Christian myself, I don't completely agree with the guest pastor on this song, but shinedown is one of those secular bands who have written songs with hidden Christian meanings.

Love is acceptance. Of all people. The purpose of this song is to take a look at your life and understand that you don’t have a super long time and to decide what kind of impression you want to leave when you die. This song reminds me to be an individual, and stand up for those who are also individuals. Leave a better impact on the world, regardless of the size of your impact. You may change a thousand lives, you may change one, but change it for the better.

If you think of God he was love...our biggest legacy in life should be to strive to love ALL PEOPLE...even our enemies. Love our planet he created for us. And if you don’t subscribe to any religion....It does boil down to how you love if you want love you give love...and it doesn’t have to be an intimate man woman love...

Being a long time Shinedown fan, I am very happy to see such positive reactions. They have had multiple songs that for me, upon their release really held relevance with things I have gone through. I agree very much that "It's not what you believe" because I do not identify myself as a Christian. Regardless of this, I am always looking to help others no matter what situation. I help other students at my martial arts dojo on fridays just as a volunteering assistant, because I feel it's important to help others achieve their goals as much as it is to achieve your own. On the flip side of this, I also show 'love' for others by way of helping the homeless when possible. Multiple times I have stopped to provide a gift card to individuals I've seen on the side of the road, so that they could order themselves food and something to drink. Even if they use it all at once, one act of general caring for humanity can help lift their spirits, as I've been told by a few myself.
"And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these.
    "
Nobody is greater, nobody is lesser. We are only different in appearance and our minds, we are all equal. We are all human. If everyone was able to justly live by those words, our world would be a kinder place.
    (sorry for the rambling)

I think the lyric "its not what you believe" is actually saying you don't have to come from a certain background to be able to show compasion for another human life
    Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews
They all come from different walks of life
But they all understand what love is and they all know how to show conpassion and love their fellow neighbors
So it really doesn't matter what you believe
We all know how to show love for one another in our own way and in the end thats all that matters

I believe love is the same for everyone, and this was the most SIMPLE concept- "How did you love"
Love-is pure. Its like how you love your children, best friend, ext. You simply care, thats it.
No passing judgement, if you cant agree, simple, just love them and walk away.
How did you love also means, how did you care, how did you TRY.
    Love is never evil.
Acts of evil are never made with love period.

As for my definition of love. I have to agree with Dr. Purvis in that love is an unconditional sentiment that you should have for every being in the world, just as God does. I have often said to many people who want to argue with me about having gay friends being a Christian myself and what I say back to them is the God doesn't hate person, he hates the sin. Even though a person chooses to live the sinful life, God does not hate them. He still loves them. He hates the sin they are living. So it is unconditional.

I love Dr Rurvis on here...as a Christian who was grown up in strict religion...who was taught against racism....I forgot to think of those who never met our savior...I am the worst example of christ I know...but if you read this he loves you.

All this song means is love people whether you agree with them or not. Aka “it’s not what you believe”, that means if someone disagrees with you, respect their opinion and still love that person. That’s all it means.

Thanx for doing Shinedown. You guys do a great job. One thing...you have to read between the lines in music as you do in your scriptures. The line ITS NOT WHAT YOU BELIEVE is more like love is not like its percieved or most do. Its about caring for all.
Love those in your life.. love those come n go because in the end thats what they will remember how you made them feel.
Now you should chk these out
    Shinedown:
    State of my Head
    Get Up
    What a Shame
    P.o.D:
    Beautiful
    Truly Amazing
    This goes out to you
    Lost in forever
    Tell me Why

I'm truly enjoying your react videos. It's great to see a pastor objectively listening to secular music. I am a HUGE Shinedown fan, seen them 5 times live. I would really love to see you and your pastor react to "I'll Follow You" by Shindown. It's one of the best songs ever written. Please do that video.

I'm just here broadening my horizons at 2am in the morning... I'd still like to offer my view of love... In my humble opinion, love is an amazing occurrence that allows people to put their ego aside and place another persons needs, well being and happiness ahead of your own, without feeling regret, jealousy or minding it in any possible way... again, maybe if I wasn't writing this in the middle of the night I could've condensed this into a neater, more coherent way, but this is what love feels like to me so, here you go =) p.s. I myself am not a believer but after going through a lot of your videos in the last hour or so, I've grown to like and respect you Pastor Rob, keep up the good work. You can feel free to say you've got a fan in Croatia =)

"God IS love" is an action. The song isn't about what they believe about Love but that "what leave behind" is a product of action. Legacy is the result of what you did with your life not what just what you believed. Belief can have impact and even major impact but remember that Love speaks for itself. You don't need to tell a child what love IS. They know what love IS. Appreciate the channel Pastor. You should listen to Heres To The Heartache by NothingMore.

One thing... God alone is the judge. That's why it doesn't matter what your beliefs are. And why Love is most important. An individual's definition of Love may be different from yours but God knows their intentions, their true Heart. He shall judge us in His way. Just bc you think someone's Love is not as pure as another's does not mean that their intentions are not as pure. God knows these things. And as long as we encourage people to Love the world will be a better place. If someone asks how then it is up to the answerer to show them how to Love... or maybe ask them to come to service with them... However the Lord guides them. Much Love to all ❤

Can only say "wow"! Another great video and commentary. Almost- almost, agree with you guys, especially definition of love.
Some boring BG, grew up in fundamental religious environment. My partner rescued me. My friends supported me. Firm believer in not blood thicker than water but the full saying "the blood of the convent is thicker than the water of the womb". These people are my kin, my family, in our Father and in love.
Managed to pick up tattered remains of faith because of that pesky love, again. Always provided. Never asked.
There are five different words of love. Sad it was never mentioned here. (And cue the pout face). It kept me going, and continues to guide me (chronic illness, few years now- and all my kin, still here! Can't even scare them away now.)
Getting to the point? Yes. Finally.
My understanding of our Father's love. Also how I try to live my life.
-Agape- To love a hundred percent, all mankind. As Father loves us. Unrelenting, indiscriminating and definitely (I have been told, maybe a few times) a bit masochistic! But the greatest gift is love. (There is a verse but will lose comment if I change screens so homework if you dare). And after all I have seen and witness, how can I not. (He always know the width of our shoulders- and more homework!) For I am always loved.
I think the song is quite relevant. How does one love? Because if you cannot open up your heart, than how can it be saved? How can the Lord enter? If your love is materialistic, selfish, based in pride, etc than won't your reality be not only reflecting that but based in the very aspect of it? Your job, every relationship, family/partners, even your self worth.
Also random- It isn't the belief of his song he is questioning, but imo, I have always believed, the listeners. Asking maybe to reflect on their beliefs.
Growing up in a strict religious household, I knew God but I never understood love. Therefore I never "knew" our Father. Not until I felt unconditional love with no regard or consequence. Beyond words. No, seriously, it is. I've tried. So here, I will stop.
Just my 2 cents, from another perspective.
    Zzz
    And cause tldr - Agape.

When he says it's not what you believe - it's in terms of no matter your religion, have you been a good person? Are you a good person? What you leave behind is the impact you have had on the people that are around you. That's what he's saying when he's asking how did you love?
