It's great seeing these old genres of games being revived by indie devs and adding roguelike elements. I swear indie gaming is literally the future of gaming, but at the same time, it's preserving the past.
I agree 100% its definately the future especially when looking how super expensive AAA games are to make and all the political activists who ruin them.
@@Crucial_End 100%, there's a massive crash coming, partially due to greed and also oversaturation. I predict older games are gonna see a huge revival while indie games start to really shine.
@@funasylumstudio I think there will be two parallel worlds: AAA and indie. AAA would be for casuals who don't care about anything and pre-order anything while indies would be for more hardcore gamers ;-)

I can't 100% put my finger on it; but there's something about the art style that is giving me a warm nostalgic glow. My current best guess is that there's just a taste of SimCIty 2000 in the appearance of the buildings(the level of pixellation, detail, use of color and contrast, SC2000 was definitely not set in a grim sci-fi resource outpost); and I played approximately eleventy-billion hours of SC2000 growing up.
Definitely lower-fi than They are Billions; but in a way that makes me feel warmer and fuzzier about it, for some reason I can't quite nail down.

Aside from the buildings. It just looks like color changing pixels. I can barely make out the enemies and units.
your not wrong like personal i cant stand pixel art games mind you im an old man haha but theres some pixel games that are great that provide clarity like shard punk but i played the demo and this aint it.
Pixel art can be very nice, though here I feel the color palette could be worked on. It looks like it barely even uses 256 colors.
ya, I've seen hardcore pixel art that looks GODLY, this game looks good but still feels like it utilizes only 50-60% of colors.
I was watching the video thinking I would like this game... if it wasn't for the art. For my old eyes differentiating the units is too hard.
Your first video covering this got me hooked right away to pick it up. I hope this one shows that TABS wasn't a fluke and that RTS's can be fun outside of pvp.
i prefer PvE based RTS myself despite being pretty decent at most ive played over the past 25 years. Online PvP boils down to build order and cpm which often means very little variation in tactics from game to game which then just becomes boring. PvE allows your depth in playstyle for sure.
@@ksptm4 But low replayability. Pvp have sport interest, pve in other hand will became boring as fast as new features became routine.

@@Popchip99I see these years of TW, hype first year, and waterfall untill next big update. Only few old Tw games has constant players. Or games like Heroes 3. In PVP you have atleast new opponents,playstyles and etc.

This game is what I've been looking for for horde rts games. Sci-fi, orbital bombardment, mech suits, turrets, drones, robots. It's so fresh. Finally, not another fantasy horde rts.
Ive been playing this game for a while and Ive been frustrated how hard it was. I never used walls untill I saw your video. I just stacked turrets and soldiers in bunkers. Dang those walls are strong. thanks for the help lol

Love your show ....I always go to you to look at games ....i saw this glory to goo game .....and I didn't even waste my time ....I went and got this .....and this game is so fun ....it's one of the best rts city management's I've ever played .....this game proves that simple is always special .....simple but in depth and alot of units and buildings and wow .....for the price GET IT .....I like they are billions ....but I love glory to goo !!!

You know you watch a lot of Splat when you don't put your headphones on for the first several seconds, but his recorded voice merges seamlessly with your imagined voice. It's kind of like when Google Maps quiets your song to give directions, but you carry on singing.
I like Cataclismo so much better. It's a much closer They Are Billions clone I feel with an amazing building mechanic and it looks great! I spent over 10 hours just playing the Free Demo on Skirmish mode.

Your video on the demo got me so hooked! The EA release has some rough edges but damn it's a good game.

I really wish the good games would also come with less indie old school style. I understand why people like that art style, but I am just a sucker for well animated high res graphics :D
achievement based unlocks are interesting. Also They are Billions is a great game (really hard though) and it's nice to see it is making it's own little sub genera

I suppose with the game's mechanics it's not quite as vital, but less garbled graphics would still make it easier to tell what's going on.
A bit clearer graphics would make it easier to determine what is happening. Something for the developers to work on.
Yeah, I don't need amazing graphics to enjoy a game but the original Starcraft looked better than this. And it came out in 1998.

Pixel art is on point & I definitely don't want it to lose its aesthetic but it can be difficult to see units. Slight changes to colour palette or unit outlines might help.
You can see the dev knows visibility has been a problem because of the yellow dots over unselected friendly units showing you where they are.
Where is They are Billions 2? The game is so freaking good, and yet no sequel, no DLCs.... Damn, I need s much more of that!

Edit: I would love if they added a diagonal animation for shooting. I know it's not a big deal, I know is not a necessary mechanic, but the combat would look x10 better. I hate when your units stand there shooting in a straigh line to an enemy that is in a diagonal position. You miss information, when there is a lot of units is hard to track were exactly your soldiers are shooting and it just looks ugly. Imma buy it anyways because this game looks amazing, I am just wishing.

So far Im not liking it the way I do They are Billions. Units are WAAAY too small. It's hard to see where they are. It's hard to get them to Garrison a bunker, sometimes they just group up for no apparant reason (I split them up to guard areas and they all leave and group in one spot) and you don't realize they aren't guarding the spot you designated because they are so small and look like so much of the environment. It's hard to even tell what is Flat and what is a Hill or Mountain or Rocks or anything 3D really. So much is just flat looking.
Some of your previous videos have gone missing. are you removing them yourself or are they getting claimed for some reason?

I thought it was the same dev, but it looks like they just used the game and expanded on it.

This game needs serious work, you were overselling it quite a bit. I can't even get it to run for more than an hour without crashing.

Who knew that graphics would be so ugly in 2024. If a time traveller went back to the Sega Genesis, early 1990's 16 bit era and told me that graphics would come full circle to 8-bit, I would have been "Dude... no way!".

The game has no 2k or 4k support keep that in mind if you buy it. I'm going to have to refund, due to eye strain. You can play on Windowed if you don't mind but that is not for me. I played for just over an hour and the game is pretty good though.
IntegerScaler would probably do the trick, though this kind of functionality should be built into the game.

If you put your title in the bottom right of the thumbnail, people can't read it through the video duration time, and, once you click on it, it can get obscured on the bottom by the player UI, depending on screen size.

The way you describe the game sounds really interesting but I just can't get past the graphics. Pixel art isn't bad in and of itself, but I can't really see whats going on in this game.

Big problem with this game is literally 0 tutorial. It asks you if you want tutorial popups, but I got nothing when I tried playing it.
The constant humming sound in the game gives me headaches. I only realized it after 2 hours into your stream.

It just came out yesterday.
@@slantythecamel Official early access launch, the game was in free demo mode for over 4 months. You can check the dev blog that it received some updates in the first month and then nothing, and now it launched in the same state as the demo. I really question games that launch with a roadmap after a few months of no update. At least launch the early access with a big patch explaining what's been worked on. If I understand, this is a one person project. That's a big red flag if it doesn't get updates.

I imagine this game is pretty fun since it's like They Are Billions but I am not a fan of the way it looks. It's kind of ugly and just not pleasant to look at. Don't like the UI either. Plus the enemies are kinda lame and very tiny. Don't wanna have to strain my eyes to see the battles. Sometimes the way a game looks and feels can turn me off to it and that might be the case with this one.
It's not very often that I just don't have any interest in a game Splattercat shows off, but this is one of those times unfortunately. I always look forward to his videos so it's kind of a bummer that I'm not gonna see another one til tomorrow.

It's wild to me that you will complain about retro filters on 3D games every time you see them, but this game's terrible art direction doesn't even get a mention.
Well maybe it's because a 3d game made in like unreal engine 3 and up is not supposed to look like a game from the start of the 80s made in MS paint and still have the story cinematics of like Starfield because that just looks wrong man this game thou is looks and feels like you are back in the late 80s early 90s playing Age of Empires

Pls play some not-early-access games so that, if I like it, I can play a completed game. Game reviewers who need content are doing way too much demo review.
I strongly preferred the way you titled your videos before. With the new way it sounds like you're trying too hard to get us interested. Hope it's working for you views-wise at least.
you sell me on games and sometimes I rarely even play them. whatever your cut it isn't enough, jus sayin. In fact to use the link so you get credit steam makes me log on and then acts like my log in is bad because they want my cell numbers or for me to log in via google or whatevers. Point being that they make it easier to just open the steam client and search for game titles, I doubt this is accidental.

Jesus, it hurts to look at this thing. I'm all for that low poly indie style graphics but I hate this "it's 8bit, therefore it's good" mentality. I get it's an artistic choice but at some point style starts to subtract from substance. If this game had at least Factorio level graphics, I'd consider it but not this mess.

I really don't get why there are so many new games which look like do to their shitty graphics looks like they were made some 30years ago. I mean it reminded me for a second of "Ufo: Enemy unknown" but that's about it. When I want to play games with crappy graphics, I can still play the old classics of which I have pleasant memories. But nowaways I expect nice graphics and by "nice" I don't mean, that you need a 4090 the run the game in a reasonable manner but simply a decent resolution and clean, easily readable fonts. So Full HD and comic style visuals are totally fine too and can even run on old systems. But all these "pixel art" games look disgusting, locking me instantly out. These days you can even use AI tools and give them a crappy sketch and they'll do the work for you and give you something that looks actually good. Also the actual classic games were usually played on CRT monitors which are analog, so these pixelated sprites back then didn't look as worse as what you see today on your super crisp digital monitor. Furthermore, I may have glorified memories but to me it seems the quality of those pixaled visuals was back then also just better in many cases because I remember that I often was in awe what the makers of a game or even just a demo could get out of the systems limited hardware.
The graphics are horrible even for an indie game :(

Devs can do what they want, and it’s also a singleplayer game, so you are encouraged to play the way you’d like.

@@godoftwinkies574 you misunderstood the "real time" aspect. It is more like everything moving at the same time tyoe of thing instead of moving in turns or one by one. The pause has nothing to do with it
@@havefuntazarasu5367 if you can pause the game and build stuff then it's Turn Based strategy with Real Time elements. But that's just my opinion.
