  • Above ground forts have long been an alternative and wierd way to play Dwarf fortress, so after familiarizing myself a little with the steam version of DF I thought I'd make one for the content.

Dwarf fortress is basically the daddy of all colony management games, and whilst at times it can be frustrating and arcane, it's unparralelled in the depths of it's simulation.

You were right by the way. The reason more migrants started showing up is because the traders are the ones who determine how "wealthy" your fort is and that is what determines how many migrants show up. Its an attempt to simulate how traders are spreading word of your fort wherever they go and when dwarves from other settlements hear about it they get interested or disinterested in setting off to find their fortunes at your fort.
Since you had that one trader trapped in a bug he never got to report how wealthy your fort was and you were stuck with your first trader as a reference for your forts wealth. And they likely only saw the poor beginnings of your fort giving it a poor wealth rating. When you released the trader your "wealth" was updated and more dwarves were allowed to flock to your fort in migrations.

A few months back I had to build an above ground fortress due to the presence of a heavy aquifer. The fort was positioned on a large island, so the only threats were kobolds stealing things. As such, the fortress became a tall wooden building surrounded by a moat and three bridges; that moat killed more or my dwarves than anything else in that fort.
As an aside, the interface for the steam version is hard to get used to, and the lack of visible alerts is too; while it’s good to not have the camera moved every time there’s a cavern collapse, it’s also annoying to find out that a badger-man was eaten by your dog by finding a badger skull in the refuse stockpile.

There's a lot of work to be done with the alerts. Currently they only point to where the event happened, not where any involved currently are. I want combat to pause, but only sometimes. It all needs to be modular I think.

Quick note, you can sustainably farm crops which use their seeds by using work orders. Farming these crops produces more than one seed per plant on average. If you use work orders when processing these seeds, you can use the excess new seeds to produce while making sure you have some remaining to plant.
For rock nut oil, you can make a work order to extract the oil, set it to be repeated say 5 times, and set a condition so that it only occurs if your number of rock nuts is greater than 15. Thus, you will always have 10 left to replant, and will use your excess to make oil.

The one time I made an above ground fortress, I did it by carving a hill down into a castle so that it would still count as underground. If I got back into the game and wanted to make a proper above ground town by additive methods, I'd probably dig out a quarry or some cellars so I could at least build the ground floor walls out of stone and save the wood for floors and furniture.

There are still hotkeys for everything and they can be rebound if you prefer the old shortcuts. Macro's are also still a thing and very easy to use(ctrl-r(ecord), crtl-p(lay),crtl-s(ave),crtl-l(oad)). Basically, you can still use the keyboard for most things in DF premium, only certain menus need the mouse input, I believe.

Hi Hazzor, great video! I've always loved the idea of an aboveground fortress and watching this has definitely given me a way forward to trying it out.
About your crops.... Crop yield is determined by the skill levels of your farmers and soil quality. The lower your farmers skills the less yield you will get especially with lower quality soil. The yield can even be as low as 0 meaning you get nothing from planting that crop and come up with a net loss in usable seeds until you run out.. Yield is usually from 0-6 each tile that is planted, with higher yields more likely with higher quality soil and higher farmer skills. The way to directly counter a net loss is by fertilizing your farm plots. Set to fertilize every season (so you don't have to keep microing as much), then make potash for fertilizer. Fertilizing your farm plots makes it so that even the lowest skill farmer will get at least 1 usable plant from a tile instead of 0, meaning that at worst your are maintaining your supply instead of bleeding seeds. Using this method has made it so that my farmers can keep farming, increase their skills, and get bigger yields until you drown in extra seeds.
    Hope this helps!

Awesome video. I love to see people take on the challenges of building above ground. I didn't see anyone mention it in the comments so sorry if I overlooked it. You can setup a kiln plus a zone(nearby your mega project to save time) to collect clay at and the dorfs will pile up tons of the stuff for you to build with. Doesn't leave much variety to build with and if you want to cook it into blocks it's still going to take fuel, however clay can be used to build walls/floors raw and I've found it saves me quite the headache when building above ground.

    Best way of making walls:
    1. Try to make a lot of a single type of block in the production menu. For example, let's say you have a TON of granite, or birch wood (two things my current fort has almost too much of). Just force them to make blocks out of the most common material.
    2. Forbid all undesired construction materials in your stock screen before building. It can be done in just 3 clicks. First click the button that disallows all chunks, then the button that disallows all blocks, then reallow all the blocks of your desired type. After that, when building the wall, select "use closest material" and now you can skip the material selection screen, effectively painting your walls.
    3. Reallow all the chunks/blocks after you're done planning out your walls.
It sounds complicated and sounds like it would take longer, but it really does save time.

6:30 Funny anecdote on that note, I recently started a new fortress and before I had even dug down a single Z level I had three monster slayers, a Hammerman, a Speardwarf and a Swordsdwarf asking for residency in my fort.

That shouldn't be possible. Monster slayers don't show up till you break into one of the cavern layers. They were probably all just mercenaries. Not sure what exactly causes it but sometimes mercenaries are extremally common. I also never accept them or monster slayers because they never apply for full citizenship.

I've modded in playable humans and building a brick castle is a tedious but satisfying delight. You can build four posts of wall and a bridge over the top to make a 'tent' of sorts. This lets you put beds and tables 'indoors' with only a tree's worth of logs.

Fantastic video, and a James May reference to boot.
Incidentally, I had my first monster encounter tonight. A Weremammoth who stomped four of my Dwarves flat before my militia killed it. Those four then turned at the next full moon, and turned four more before I killed three of them. The last one turned back into a Dwarf, only to join the other four on the next full moon after that. Finally, my fortress was reduced to just two Dwarves, a man and a child, who both transformed into rampaging monsters once a month.

dude i commend you for putting up with the game's building mechanics. It's *so* frustrating how dwarves will suspend construction if there's literally *anything* in the tile they need to be building, rather than just...say, moving it. Twice as frustrating when the thing blocking construction is the material they need to actually build it. *Really* made me appreciate Rimworld a lot more, lmao.

Oh, I figured out how to do the seeds thing sustainably recently. But it requires a mess of linked stockpiles. Basically you do a x number of seeds (say rocknuts in the linked stockpile), and you make the work order be "if there are greater than X rock nuts, then grind X-n rock nuts". ie: If there are greater than 10 rocknuts, grind two. And so then you only get seeds ground where there's still enough remaining as a buffer in the background. Imho, setting up the stockpiles is the worse part.

One rock nut planted by a good grower in good soil makes 3-5 rock nuts and tons of leaves. Leaves go to the kitchen, rock nuts back to the plots.
Set up a work order to grind rock nuts when more than 50 are available, and link that to a job to press rock nut slurry. Ezpz.
The aboveground crops that can't be brewed/milled are doomed to run out though, yeah.

Since the blocks/bricks information came up and "yelling" was suggested. Blocks are also a great way to train fledgling dwarves new to a job if you can. For the cost of time, you multiply your resource, let it stack to higher numbers, make future jobs with it faster, and raise its value. Theres a chance a lot of your unexpected wealth growth was at least in part due to the blocks themselves. The biggest issue is you end up needing a lot more bins, and input time vs raw material building.

my favorite above ground run was settling on a volcano digging out massive obsidian casting chambers and using only obsidian to build massive fortress/tower Barad-dûr style.
Then channeling lava to the surface turning surounding greenery into hellish landscape.
