Hepburn was a massive fan of Estée Lauder products, writing in a letter, “I start and end my day with you.” One of the baby pinks Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was rumoured to be a Lauder shade- either the now-discontinued Mocha Pink, or the lipstick in colour 260, Eccentric.
I saw that same information that Revlon had confirmed that the color was Pink in the Afternoon. It actually pulls peachy on me and on several other people that I have seen review it. Also, I heard that Audrey had several jewelry quality lipstick tubes, some jeweled, that she refilled with lipstick over and over again. So Lisa Eldridge may not have found Pink in the Afternoon at the bottom of the one she bought but it was just the last one that was in that one, not necessarily the one from 1961!
I personally think Lisa doesn’t want to give out the brand name is simply because she wants to sell her version of it which is sad, but the vintage doll Audrey shade is the best on you! loved it😍
Yes- but it would be nice if she would let fans know just for historical purposes- i think it is rotten to keep it secret- I would never buy any lipstick from her just because of keeping that secret!

the way things look in real life is often very different to how they appear on film. the bright red ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz are dark burgundy in real life for instance. It could well have been that Audrey's lipstick was pink irl, but the lighting and film made it look salmon.
My question is, why do we assume that the lipstick in that tube was the same shade she wore in 1961? I'm sure she wore more than one shade, these could be two completely different shades of lipstick. I'd love to know both.
Erin Parsons (Makuep Artist/ Vintage Makeup collector) did a lot of research about this and the most probable candidate for Audrey's lipstick is a refillable Christian Dior lipstick in 20 or 24, it doesn't exist today. There's a TikTok video about it on Erin's profile.
I never really understood why Lisa Eldridge chose to keep the brand and the shade of the lipstick secret either, each to their own and all, but I felt it was a little petty. I’m mixed on how I feel about LE. When you pay as much money for something as she did I understand it. But to play the I know but I’m not telling you….rubs the wrong way. I don't know if the actual lipstic brand Holly Golightly holds in her hand can be identified, but the film was shot in Eastman Color and the physical film did fade and change in color over the years. What we see these days is a restoration based on the original negatives. It is very good, but I think the film medium in itself and the restauration process can show us a slighly different shade than what Audrey wore during the shooting of the film. Film shown on the screen is once or twice removed from real life. Lisa should really make a new batch of her Go Lightly lip stick! Funny how little mysteries like this catch our attention :- )
Great video, Laura! I really like Audrey, and when I was little my mother owned a lipstick by Yardley whose shade resembled Audrey's lipsticks very much. Your videos always bring back great memories Laura, and very special ones too! Hope you had a merry Christmas!
I have issues with Lisa withholding the name, and it's not just about profit. She buys a ton of vintage cosmetics, and doesn't want anyone else to find it for her personal reasons.
Yardley, Max Factor, Coty and Cover Girl are all possibilities for that gold silvery tube. Audrey's makeup artist also worked with Liz Taylor, Ava Gardner etc and they are all pictured with a pink salmon shade for a movie or another...all from the 50's and 60's.
Max factor recommend a specific lipstick for Technicolor. 7-22 and Roman Pink. Marilyn Monroe had multiple 7-22 in her personal collection when she died as she was filming 2 months prior. It’s very likely MF Roman Pink was worn by most Hollywood stars at some point. I managed to buy one. It’s a lovely coral pink.. just like this. I have my suspicions that AH lipstick could be MF Roman Pink
I don't know if Lisa has the one from the film - it may have very well been just a shade Audrey really liked - but whatever she has must still be sold in stores, otherwise she would have let us know her findings. You could research all the salmon pink shades every manufacturer makes and see if you can find the years they were created. You might be able to narrow it down to a handful of options. I would love to see more of these types of videos. Dupes for screen-worn shades would be awesome!
Also would like to add that the modern / updated version Revlon Pink in Afternoon, (as in the Ad) would be different to the 60s colour, it looks to have more pink less of the salmon, more 80s …less 60s.
Lovely video! I actually think the lipstick could have been Revlon’s Blase Apricot which was around in the 50s, and was a top seller for revlon in 62, a year after the movie was released. Blase Apricot had much more of that orange tinge to it than Pink in the afternoon, which was released much later. Unfortunately revlon discontinued Blase Apricot at some point in the early 2000s. The only similar color they have to it is coral berry, which is a bit darker. Coral berry has an odd texture though, and mac Vegas volt is the closest dupe to it, although more opaque. Mac used to have the color cross wires and ravishing which were a bit closer to Blase apricot.
Yardley lipstick omg! Sadly I think they don't sell it anymore. My mom still has a old tube lol, love those 60s frost lipsticks! Wish I could find something similar!
Hi, My names Jordan and I just want to say that I really love your videos and I really like you. Im a vintage movie addict and everyone tells me I was born at the wrong time. Watching your videos make me happy and makes me feel like I have gone back in time and that youtube was available in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. I also love how everything you talk about you now exactly not what your talking about, a lot of people nowadays are like "I love Marilyn Monroe I just love the 1920s when she was around" 😩😩 You are always accurate and you can tell you have a passion and love for what you do! so thank you so much please dont stop❤❤❤
Good colours, Vintage doll is closest. I recall as a child, on the dressing tables of elders, it was the gold tube vintage Yardley lipsticks in that Salmon pink colour. Also Max Factor, Coty… are others I recall.
We have to take into account that maybe pink in the afternoon or whatever color it actually is in BAT probably pulls more coral on Hepburn because of her undertone. The same color can pull different ways depending on who has the color on their lips. Lip pigmentation also affects things too. Also lip liner - if those were used back in the day - could also modify the way a color looks.
I think the EL and the Revlon are the most wearable on my coloring (I am a very fair-skinned blonde). The shade Audrey wore is gorgeous, but every time I have tried on something close to that, I get totally washed out. I am so glad you show different versions of the iconic shade, so that we can all find something that will suit us!
When I first saw Lisa’s video I was a bit angry because yes she spent 25,000 GBP on it, but she dissected it to replicate it and I knew it was a Revlon. Sorry but, I think she fibbed.
There’s a lipstick of hers that was auctioned a few years ago (gatekeeper-free lol) , it’s a Revlon shade called “Bachelor’s Carnation”. Revlon should definitely re-release it! Besame recreated the packaging for their Marilyn collection and *I think* it could possibly be what they based “Carnation Red” on since the collection was based on her personal items
@@oliolsson2916 it was. Most of the collection were recreations of products that were found in marilyn's makeup bag that she brought with her to film sets, and revlons "bachelors carnation" was one of the many things in the bag😊😃
I have to wonder if Micky Rooney's over the top yellowface performance in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" adds to its cultural and and historical significance. It wasn't in the book. And I think we're at the point where we can openly say that she was a call girl rather cafe society girl.
I’m sorry but I hated his character in the movie. If I owned the right to the movie, I’d release an edited version that cuts all the scenes with him out bc the movie doesn’t change without him, only maybe leave on the last scene when she gets arrested, but yeah it’s pretty gross ngl
This is a video I’ve been waiting for . I’m so happy you were the one to do it on this subject Laura. I will preface this by stating that I greatly respect and admire Lisa Eldridge as an artist and creator. I am however very disappointed that given the enduring popularity of Audrey Hepburn, her lipstick in the shade “Go Lightly “ has not been restocked. I’m more disappointed and frustrated that she has chosen not to reveal the brand and shade of the lipstick she purchased at the Christie’s auction. Perhaps Christie’s might be able to divulge that information on the lipstick. I don’t believe that revealing this information would have had any negative impact on the sales of her own lipstick version. I have come across a sheer lipstick by Gucci “No more Orchids” which might also be a dupe. However, I think Vintage Doll cosmetics is a faithful shade to the one shown in the film. Well done Laura for another very well researched video💄💄💄💄💄💄
Great research years ago in the 60’s Avon had a great pink lipstick 💄, called Sugar Pink have never found anything close...cheers from Pennsylvania 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎄🎄🎄
I think what you and Lisa are both missing is the concept of Ph balance in the skin and skin tone. Both you and Lisa are cool toned, so naturally that coral pink from Revlon is going to be pink cool pink. I wear Love In the Afternoon and because I am olive and have alkaline skin I get the perfect salmon pink.
I thought the exact same. Lipsticks drastically change in color depending upon your skin tone. My favorite color is Lolita by Kat Von D, it's a lovely mauve color on me. But on my mom who is darker skin tone it looks bright pink!
Hi Laura - lovely video 👍 It's a fascinating subject isn't it! I've heard that Lisa Eldridge, due to popular demand, is bringing back her Go Lightly lipstick soon... so if you do order a Go Lightly lipstick from LE, it may be worth updating your comparisons at that point... but if Audrey is like me (& possibly like a lot of us!), she would have had a handful of 'go-to' shades that were her favourites to wear day in day out, and from a variety of brands too... and I guess it could have been any one of her favourites in the film :) Anyway - it's a fascinating topic for sure 💟
I think its Estee Lauder because if it was from a brand that was discontinued she would just say it but since the brand is still around she wouldn't be able to make money off of it. I bought her Dance Card lipstick. Its beautiful but sometimes it looks a lite bright lol. There was a shade from the 60s called Peach Coral. It might be that one.
Such a (imo) douchey move by Lisa Eldridge...gatekeeping Audrey's lipstick so that you can sell your own version and not give credit to the original brand. 🙄
That’s greedy of Eldridge. Who knows what she owns. We can’t even be sure at all that what she obtained is the lipstick is the same one as Audrey used in the movie. Maybe Audrey just loved those pinks because those looked good on her. Wouldn’t it be funny Audrey herself had forgotten what she wore? Sixty years ago she was just filming a movie and being herself.
I think the vintage doll looks the most like the movie, and looks great on you. I agree that the other pink tone ones don't look super 1960s almost a bit more 80s looking to me ?
I think the lipstick audrey worn is estee lauder one. I watch the film again, and slow the video, it's a gold tube with some ellips , and gold tube. I think it's an estee lauder lipstick that audrey use in that film.
This was a really fun video. I am going to buy some vintage doll cosmetics because her shades are beautiful and love supporting our fabulous Ms. Laura. What a lot of ppl dont know is there are only a handful of manufactures that make commercial cosmetics so there could be a lipstick shade with the same formula but just different brand name on it. So those shades could be exactly the same.
That’s really only true if it’s private label. I used to work for a manufacturer that made products for a lot of mid-range brands. Everything is produced very separately. Brands also work with several manufacturers, so even if it’s confirmed that two brands have blushes made in the same place, it’s possible that their lipsticks are made by completely different manufacturers. A lot of people also think if the components look the same, they are private label or made in the same factory, but that isn’t necessarily true either.
It actually could be Pink in the afternoon, but when she used it in the movie it had another name. Also, it could pull corally on the screen wither because of technicolor or recolor of the movie for new media. Also, is so annoying that Lisa is hiding the shade from all of us!
I’m glad you mentioned technicolor because the camera changes the color of things and like Chanel 5 perfume the formula and color of the lipstick is probably different from the 60s. I always believed it was Estée Lauder because the packaging in the film looks just like it. But if revlon confirmed it, I believe it. Also, skintone matters as well on how makeup looks.
Thank you for the fun video! On my screen there was a difference in the first two samples, with the Revlon being a bit darker but less color saturated than the Estee, but both look very 1980's to me. Your lipstick looked the most accurate and best one worn. Revlon makes a salmon color called Siren, but it still doesn't look like the 1960s.
Interesting take on an iconic beauty color- Hepburn's Holly Golightly 💋 💄 lipcolor or dupe, close enough 🤔. Good research Laura! Who knows the reason why this LE will take a lipstick color(the very recipe) for that color the late Ms. Hepburn wore in the film, to her grave- that's very bizarre. Anyway, they're all pretty colors and will try out soon enough! Anyway, a good movie 🎬!! (Natalie 🌸 )
I think that the shade was "Blasé Apricot." My late mother imitated Audrey Hepburn, and that was her favorite shade. The closest color currently available on Revlon is probably Coral Berry. HTH.♥
Very nice video! I have both Pink in the afternoon and Lisa Eldridge version. I love the Revlon one for daily wear, I think it matches my skin really well. The LE one is supposed to be based on the one she has from Audrey, which doesn’t mean it was used in the movie, it is more salmon, beautiful packaging and really interesting color. I understand she doesn’t want to share the real lipstick, it took her a lot of work to analyse and find out a similar recipe, so sharing it would be like sharing Coca Colas recipe…
I think the Revlon lipstick is the best dupe for the original. I have done Audrey Hepburn makeup for myself and I think it was the closest shade I used.
Hi, could you tell me the finish of that lipstick? Is it a cream, satin or matte? I have quite chapped lips and don't want to enhance that with a matte formula. Thanks.
*It's the Estee Lauder.* "So why does it look different then? Eh, smart ass?" Because BAT's was shot in Eastman Kodak color, notorious for degrading over time. "Pink In the Afternoon" was duped from the original tube. "HOW DO YOU KNOW???" *An old NDA prevents me from answering that.* I don't know who Lisa Eldridge is and that really doesn't matter either. If they're using an original 50 year old tube of lipstick from the 60's the color would've changed by now as well. The bottom line is: If you like the pink color, wear the pink color. If you like the coral color, wear the coral color. They're both pretty. 😘
I think it was a Max Factor shade. They were sold with gold tubes. I bought a lipstick my cousin used to wear in the 60s. It was called Peppermint Pink. It is a very light shade of salmon. I think that they maybe would have had a slightly darker shade back then.
I would have to say your lipstick was closest, but I think the Lisa Eldridge one looked best on you even though it looked nothing like the movie lipstick
Lol I just bought the lauder version without knowing it was a dupe! I just thought it will fresh up my face during the day and even in the night when I apply bronzer a bit more heavier!
Because of technicolor, maybe, it looks more coral and more pale, more nude. I have the Estee Lauder one, it's a beautiful shade and a very good formula, but if I want to replicate the look, I would go for something more matte and more nude-ish, like mixing with something like Mac Kinda Sexy or Tom Ford Spanish Pink.

You have to remember that formulations change as time goes by because they find out that some ingredients are toxic.
Good colours, Vintage doll is closest. I recall as a child, on the dressing tables of elders, it was the gold tube vintage Yardley lipsticks in that Salmon pink colour. Also Max Factor, Coty… are others I recall.
The vintage doll shade is by far the very best!!
Agree!!
Old Hollywood reds would be awesome! I know that Audrey wore Revlon's Fire and Ice in another one of her movies - I guess Revlon was big back then!
My gut is telling me Max Factor
Lisa popped up on my tiktok the other day and I just want to blast her with comments regarding the lipstick but then this video stopped me
When I first saw Lisa’s video I was a bit angry because yes she spent 25,000 GBP on it, but she dissected it to replicate it and I knew it was a Revlon. Sorry but, I think she fibbed.
It was closer to 47,000 GBP actually. 25,000 is where she nearly stopped bidding.
Yes please do more videos such as this one! Would be cool to test out which colors Monroe’s makeup artist combined to create her signature red.
I love your videos. Revlon did have gold tubes in 1960s. Below is a link to the color swatches from Revlon.
Which Link? 😳
It's said that pink in the afternoon was created after the film.
I want to try that Revlon. But I am cool toned too.
I'm olive too and I was a bit hesitant on trying it because I didn't think it'd look good on me, now I will tho!
I thought the exact same. Lipsticks drastically change in color depending upon your skin tone. My favorite color is Lolita by Kat Von D, it's a lovely mauve color on me. But on my mom who is darker skin tone it looks bright pink!
I have pale skin with yellowish undertones and also get the salmon pink
Theres a glamourdaze video where a blonde model is painting her lips with a lipstick exactly to the audrey hepburn one🤔
I just watched Audrey’s 1962 Paris When it Sizzles movie. In it, she wears a salmon pink lipstick and blusher. She looks delightful!
I think it's an estee lauder lipstick that audrey use in that film.
it's more round tube like estee, revlon one is kinda rectangle,
Just made my first vintage doll cosmetics order! I’m so excited to use my lipsticks!
Maybe it’s a Max Factor shade. That brand of makeup was very popular back then. Helena Rubinstein?
Thank you for this lovely video. Very helpful.
Thank you so much , and Merry Christmas and Happy New year
It actually could be Pink in the afternoon, but when she used it in the movie it had another name. Also, it could pull corally on the screen wither because of technicolor or recolor of the movie for new media. Also, is so annoying that Lisa is hiding the shade from all of us!
You always present such nice content. Have a wonderful new year
I’m glad you mentioned technicolor because the camera changes the color of things and like Chanel 5 perfume the formula and color of the lipstick is probably different from the 60s. I always believed it was Estée Lauder because the packaging in the film looks just like it. But if revlon confirmed it, I believe it. Also, skintone matters as well on how makeup looks.
I have "Go Lightly" lipstick from Lisa Eldridge's first launch! It is more coral than pink.
Why is it such a secret? 🤷♀️
Happy holidays to you, Laura! The hairstyle Audrey wears, the chignon, is pronounced “chin-yon.”
Audrey hepburn lipstick.. always the mystery we want to solve! thanks for the video
Your Vintage lipstick is Perfect! 💗
Maybe Vintage Max Factor Frosted Orange
We will never know.
the vintage doll one is my favorite of them, the others feel so 80's.
Curious about Jungle Red and thank you for your video!
Lisa is holding out for "drama" I'm sure...
Hello, could you make a video about the cosmetics that Audrey Hepburn had on her dresser in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's?
Love that I idea
These types of shades wash me out, but excellent point about the technicolor effect
Since Wally Westmore was the makeup artist on the movie, it would have been a Westmore lipstick shade.
You are positively correct! My mom told me this and I have compared it dozens of times
I think it was actually by Yves Saint Laurent. Every Yves Saint Laurent coral shade was very on point. Or maybe... Estee Lauder.
The vintage doll lipstick has the best colour.
I have your shop’s Audrey lipstick and it looks amazing, feels great and lasts all day. Perfect for any occasion and eye makeup
Hi, could you tell me the finish of that lipstick? Is it a cream, satin or matte? I have quite chapped lips and don't want to enhance that with a matte formula. Thanks.
*It's the Estee Lauder.*
"So why does it look different then? Eh, smart ass?" Because BAT's was shot in Eastman Kodak color, notorious for degrading over time. "Pink In the Afternoon" was duped from the original tube. "HOW DO YOU KNOW???" *An old NDA prevents me from answering that.*
I don't know who Lisa Eldridge is and that really doesn't matter either. If they're using an original 50 year old tube of lipstick from the 60's the color would've changed by now as well.
The bottom line is: If you like the pink color, wear the pink color. If you like the coral color, wear the coral color. They're both pretty. 😘
Request: Estelle Getty before was celebrity
i love your outfit in this omg
My blessing that I can find your video ❤️
I think it was a Max Factor shade. They were sold with gold tubes. I bought a lipstick my cousin used to wear in the 60s. It was called Peppermint Pink. It is a very light shade of salmon. I think that they maybe would have had a slightly darker shade back then.
Beautiful color
I love the vintage doll one! Pretty yellow undertone x
I would have to say your lipstick was closest, but I think the Lisa Eldridge one looked best on you even though it looked nothing like the movie lipstick
Great video and great research, Laura. In my opinion Vintage Doll is the best!
Lol I just bought the lauder version without knowing it was a dupe! I just thought it will fresh up my face during the day and even in the night when I apply bronzer a bit more heavier!
The lisa Eldridge is my favorite
It’s Estée Lauder in Eccentric
That too is so cute and is so good with your skin!
Laura, would you consider making a video on Tippi Hedren? Especially her in Marnie and The Birds! She’s so gorgeous!
This is so interesting!
