Very true. I wonder why not more bands were obviously influenced by them. Probably because it's next to impossible to create anything that sounds that way. The Rumble Strips are the only band that comes to my mind that at times had a clear Dexys feel whenever brass involved. Still a good band though, not pure copyism. And the lead singer's voice just happened to be very similar as well. Try if you want to. Nowhere near Dexys but I really liked them the short time they existed. @@elduuude Searching For The Young Soul Rebels was Dexy's best album, the other 2 are good but this was lightning in a bottle. Like John Cougar's early music this was their best, when they're young and hungry before they start incorporating politics and try to be artsy their music is always the best, when they make songs about life, love and where life might take you is always a groups or performer's best music.
Every time I hear this I have vivid flashbacks of being young, carefree, music mad and loving life.... I am still the same, just older, carefree and loving life and music still.........
Good comment about his indecipherable singing - I loved this when it came out, it sounded so angry, but I was interested to read the lyrics too. A lot of folk in the UK felt pretty angry at that time, I recall. Oh and he has the most appealing "whine" I have ever heard! And always loved the horns in their songs :)
I'm going to hunt down the 20 people who disliked this and rip their ears off as they clearly have no use for them in life. Dexys are without doubt the best fucking band ever to have walked the planet and Kevin Rowland is a fucking legend. Lyrics, passion and soul, just the best - thanks for sharing.
Maybe not. A temporary measure if history illustrates...... It's a feeling. "Robyn, you're always so happy, How'n the hell? You're like a dumbed down down patriot! You're supposed to be so angry, why not fight, let me benefit from your right". The cheek! That's my fave verse from a mainstream song. Love the choreography that comes with it, beautiful!
@freqeist I am American and I ain't thick. These Soul Rebels are the real deal. RIGHT ON! Never had no trouble understanding Dexy's and their sound. I LOVE NORTHERN SOUL!
WELCOME THE NEW SOUL VISION!!! Passion, man, and this has it in bucketloads. I was about 24 when these started, getting a bit jaded with the whole post-punk coldness and nastiness, and along came Dexy's and all that 2Tone stuff, just in time....
What a band !! Changing to keep us interested and giving us new sounds. This was always my favourite even if i had to look up the lyrics.Great front man and really talented
Rowlands was my god growing up, and still is in a kind of sentimental way, i fell out with all my mates who just didn,t get DEXYS, their loss and i was so right, they gave me backbone when i needed it most, how could a YAMYAM/PLASTIC PADDY, give this Brummie so much inspiration fuck knows, but he was good and theres no denying that, god bless Kev.
I seen Dexys perform this in 1980 at a club in Liverpool called Gatsby’s where they performed all their up coming Searching for the Young Soul Rebel material, I loved that gig that much I’ve been slightly disappointed ever since and I’ve seen everyone, Kevin’s haunting soulful voice full of angst and despair echoed millions of youths lost in the cracks of Thatcherism and the horn section was fierce as was the Hammond organ
'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels is one of those rare albums in the it's perfect. If that's all Kevin ever did - he'd still be a hero in my house. What an uplifting record It IS the real deal.
Kevin Rowland should have an Ivor Novello for this. Look up the lyrics and you will not believe what he turned into a Top Ten soul hit. The man is lyrical genius
bought this album in 1980 on vinyl and still have it. Even today when I hear it, it's still so raw and powerful. There are not many albums that you can say about after 33 years. I agree with you Jo, no one will be listening anything of nicki's. People say Kevin had his faults, but you would not have had this album or any of their other's without them.
i wanna be dressed like them, hung out like them, have a good pure 80s fun, drink like a horse, dance, fall in love and dance to this tune. Top blue eyed soul!
HaHa,Rowlands a Wolves fan & was even a football hooligan in the 70's!!! Hes written songs about Wolves (My Time In England) & in the mid to late 80's he was always on the terraces at Wolves games in his baggy gear.
Amazing live performance. Tack så mycket for uploading! I only really discovered them about 15 years ago, when I was 28. That whole album has since become one of my absolute favourites I always get back to. It captures 60s soul spirit, puts it into 1980, with brilliant sound, brilliant songwriting and brilliant lyrics. Perfection!
Must be more than 20 years since I last heard this (been living in Brazil for the past 13). Haven't the slightest idea why it just popped into my head tonight.... pretty random, but I'm glad it did. It sounds even better than I remembered it!
I couldn't agree more! Saw then live in those days - and that's around 30 years ago, mind you - and I was totally swept of off my feet. A legendary gig, a band that whas to big for this puny world. Rowland was a cocky bastard, but made up for it with great, really great soul music. Man, I really miss bands like this one.
They are the best band I ever seen live and Kevin Rowland also gave us a lift home after the gig when we missed our last bus, how cool is he
Top Brummie
40 years on, this still sounds as fresh and exciting as the first day I heard it. What a band❤
One of Britain's most original and innovative bands--nothing like them before, since and never will be.
110 % Agree my friend ! REAL MUSIC WITH BOLLOCKS ! All about corparations making money out of talentless nobodys" now !
Totally agree.

The pure energy of this song
This is what you call a brilliant live performance, Respect to a band who can
perform with such energy and passion and sound so superb!! Awesome.....
He missed his entrance! So caught up in his lunatic arm-waving.
Nowt like hanging out with a Donkey jacket on at the age of 13 with NCB on the back my dad got of his mate at work . Them was the days .
Proper northern night out that we used to go gigs with donkeys jackets on great times wish I could go back. 👌
plenty here in barnsley lol

the magic of dexys, pure gold, brings tears to my eyes everytime

Wow 40 years ago.... Remember it like yesterday. Absolute classic
This song, IMO, is much better than'Come On Eileen'.

So is Geno, but they always play C O E.
Much better than COE - this is classic soul music
Kevin Rowland's voice is so unique. It come from and goes directly to the heart.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It is classic, fabulous, and I have loved it for over 30 years.
amazingly tight horn-section - Dexy's in full flight, proper tune, many thanks

My favourite Dexys song.
As good a chunk of soul as you'll ever find. Superb.

I searched . I found the Mayfair in Glasgow wi the Specials and Madness. You fought to get in, you never forget the genius of Dexys.
Makes you want to drop some speed and go a dancing. Loved dexies - great album this came from too.

Their most under-rated track, a classic.
