Fun fact; Balthasar wasn't originally the Empire's signature Wizard special character; when the first Empire army book rolled out for 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles, the Empire's special character list contained two super special Wizards: Tzarina Katarin of Kislev, the Ice Witch, and Thyrus Gormann, Head of the College of Fire and Supreme Patriarch of Imperial Wizards. Balthasar was introduced in 6th edition's Empire army book, and whilst Thryus did get an official update on the GW website to 6e, with the option to represent him as Supreme Patriarch once more by swapping out his signature Fire Magic-boosting staff for the Staff of Volans carried by Balthasar, he never made it into the 7e or 8e Empire books, being overtaken by Balthasar.
That's pretty awesome, lore update being reflected by model/rules changes. I know the lore is an excuse to sell said models and (unfortunately) rules, but still.

Funny story: in WFRPG (the TTRPG of Warhammer Fantasy) my party interacted with Gelt, after hearing of the bounty in the harbor district. The scheming merchant, ever looking for money, convinced the Patriarch to turn a fake metal mask, which looked exactly like his, to gold and fool the pirate with it. Gelt agreed, but only after making sure he would get half of the bounty for himself. The pirate was fooled by the mask (because we stuffed a half-rotten head inside) and gave us the gold. It is said that even today, one can hear the enraged screams of a pirate captain near Altdorf, yelling about Gelt haunting him until his dying day. Oh yeah, the helmet turned back to iron after we left btw.

Dwarfs in WFRP 1st ed could do magic. They had a cultural taboo against it, and if they picked up wizarding they got the least magic points of everyone. But you could run into the odd dwarf alchemist in adventures.

Another thing to note: "Gelt" is an old german word, which roughly means things like salary, compensation etc.. It still sees some use today in the form of Entgelt (a compensation agreed upon in a contract) and is also the origin of the word... Geld. Which means money. The man was effectively named the empire equivalent of "Cash Money Balthasar".

Soul Wars was my first intro to warhammer AoS but coming back to it a couple days ago after learning about warhammer fantasy lore and realizing that the main character was Gelt was absolutely crazy,
“Trusting him is worse than trusting Tzeentch because you can probably see Tzeentches betrayal coming a mile away” is the best accidental praise to Nagash I’ve ever heard. The dude is more confounding and treacherous THAN THE CHANGER OR WAYS.
This character single-handedly got me interested in the world of warhammer fantasy. and to some extent 40k too. Hes just too fucking cool in every aspect. Being able to transmute stuff into gold is just too cool man. But what sealed my decision was the infamous "WELCOME TO ESTALIA GENTLEMEN" speech. Whoever voiced him in total war warhammer did a fantastic job.

In regards to your TWW crashing, sorry to hear. Good news though, from a similar experience ('random' crashes on the same city multiple times) I have a solution that's worked every time for me: If playing on anything less than Legendary (where save scumming is impossible), reload the last save and do a slightly different thing. Wait a turn to attack the settlement, or attack with a different lord if you have that option (I used a separate army, but the Replace Lord feature might work as well).

Fun Fact, Balthasar Gelt is one of the examples where the metaplot advances between WFB editions. Prior to 6th edition, the wizard legendary lord in the armybooks *was* Thyruss Gormann. The 6th edition armybook has a one-page narration of the duel between Gormann and Gelt and that's also the first armybook with Gelt as the wizard legendary lord.

One of my biggest fantasy fantasies is being a spellsword or an arcane knight. Basically the sword and sorcery guy in one. Also being like Magnus or Macros the Black from the Raymond E. Feist books that have nothing to do with Warhammer but he is an insanely powerful wizard. Because being able to hurl lightning at people is awesome.

Soul Wars was my first intro to warhammer AoS but coming back to it a couple days ago after learning about warhammer fantasy lore and realizing that the main character was Gelt was absolutely crazy,
“Trusting him is worse than trusting Tzeentch because you can probably see Tzeentches betrayal coming a mile away” is the best accidental praise to Nagash I’ve ever heard. The dude is more confounding and treacherous THAN THE CHANGER OR WAYS.
Seeing Balthasar's mask over Maomao got me in a way I didn't know was possible.
This character single-handedly got me interested in the world of warhammer fantasy. and to some extent 40k too. Hes just too fucking cool in every aspect. Being able to transmute stuff into gold is just too cool man.
But what sealed my decision was the infamous "WELCOME TO ESTALIA GENTLEMEN" speech. Whoever voiced him in total war warhammer did a fantastic job.
It's both hilarious and sad that hearing 21:22 made not only me but my family members instantly think "Oh hey! That sounds like [my sister-in-law]"

In regards to your TWW crashing, sorry to hear. Good news though, from a similar experience ('random' crashes on the same city multiple times) I have a solution that's worked every time for me: If playing on anything less than Legendary (where save scumming is impossible), reload the last save and do a slightly different thing. Wait a turn to attack the settlement, or attack with a different lord if you have that option (I used a separate army, but the Replace Lord feature might work as well).

Fun Fact, Balthasar Gelt is one of the examples where the metaplot advances between WFB editions. Prior to 6th edition, the wizard legendary lord in the armybooks *was* Thyruss Gormann. The 6th edition armybook has a one-page narration of the duel between Gormann and Gelt and that's also the first armybook with Gelt as the wizard legendary lord.

One of my biggest fantasy fantasies is being a spellsword or an arcane knight. Basically the sword and sorcery guy in one. Also being like Magnus or Macros the Black from the Raymond E. Feist books that have nothing to do with Warhammer but he is an insanely powerful wizard. Because being able to hurl lightning at people is awesome.
