Best coach out here, I work out for my own sanity. I don’t do it for competition for anything, it’s more for me and my mental. & man can I say, you make working out better for me when I go to the gym now, it’s different. If I don’t feel connection to any of my exercises, I adjust. I can lift heavy, but now I’m more worried about what I can control, contract, and push.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🌄 Mike Van Wyck emphasizes consistency as key in bodybuilding and critiques common errors in chest workouts.
00:28 💪 He notes the importance of maintaining tension, especially when using dumbbells, to effectively engage chest muscles.
01:24 🏋️‍♂️ Van Wyck advises opening arms as wide as necessary to feel a stretch in the pecs, not just focusing on getting dumbbells to the armpit.
02:22 🔄 Discusses the importance of proper movement and avoiding over-stressing the pec-shoulder tie-in.
03:06 🚫 Warns against common beginner mistakes, like flaring elbows, which can be detrimental even for experienced lifters.
04:01 🤕 Highlights the risk of injury when focusing on wide range movements in chest presses.
05:25 💡 Explains that focusing solely on upper outer pec development is a limited approach.
06:08 🏗️ Stresses the difference between being a lifter and a bodybuilder, emphasizing the need for muscle building over just lifting heavy weights.
07:04 ❌ Criticizes the use of unstable dumbbells for certain exercises, advocating for more controlled, safer methods.
08:43 ✅ Recommends using machines with fixed tracks for better isolation and control.
09:52 🔄 Suggests a technique of driving around on the low lat line for effective chest workouts.

Mike, your input and analysis of the various exercises are perfect. I can tell that since I started watching your videos, when I lift something heavy and not connected in the gym, I remember your words that you must feel it and get connected, then I drop the weight by 20-30% and perform the exercise again till I can feel my muscles. Sometimes, we forget about it, and we are tempted again to lift heavy, not build but lift as you say. So I always remind myself to skip ego lifting and focus on building muscles.

Such great no bullshit straight to the point advise. No ego. Watched a podcast by Dr Andy Galpin (sports scientist) , and he basically said pick any exercise BUT engage the mind/muscle connection. FEEL the pump. It's not all about how much weight, but what you do with the weight that matters.

If every young bodybuilder listened to this when they started they’d be worlds ahead of all of us lol unrelated to chest but related to connecting, I threw incline Db rows in my back day to hit mid/upper back recently. I had a hard time connecting to the movement and didn’t like the instability so instead of just grinding it out, I said fuck this exercise and I’ll find something I connect to better that serves the same purpose and doesn’t force me to work as hard for stability. Thanks again Mike!!!

All the gym bros press dbs straight up because they can use a lot of weight. There is literally no chest contraction or activation. You can observe their front delts doing al the work. But as long as they can brag about progressive overload to their buddies on Instagram its all good!
Mike is absolutely spot on here. I was watching old Lee Priest footage and he pushes the dbs together at the top of the concentric just like Mike to generate a chest contraction.

Great video Mike, another video of great tips and points and the correct mindset of going to the gym to engage our muscles effectively not move weight about.
I personally think correct mindset is the number 1 most important thing for people going to the gym in regards to bodybuilding.
