    I once parallel parked, on a steep hill with a standard car after only driving at all for about two weeks. Proudest moment of my life.

    • @JoeBlo2

      To become really good? As in being able to shift smoothly at all times? Months.

    • @bmar916

      JoeBlo2 I will be getting a manual soon and signed up for a 2 hour class for $150 to learn. I have owned a sportbike in the past and it's all similar just different mechanic. Hopefully it becomes second nature sooner than 'months' as to not wreck my new car, lol.

    • @JoeBlo2
      @JoeBlo2 9 років тому +2

      I started learning from a newly leased 2008 Civic 1.8. Hondas have buttery smooth clutches and gearshifts which made the learning process easier. Seeing as that you already know how to work a bike, a manual car should be a breeze. I set high standards for myself so when I said it took months to learn how to shift seemlessly, it literally meant that. The two hour class will help immensely, but for $150? Seems steep.

      JoeBlo2 Knowing how to use a motorcycle's clutch/shifter is different than a car. Motorcycle clutches can be ridden like all hell, whereas they'll burn up if you do that in a car. The concept will catch on much quicker, but you'll want to relearn certain habits.

    From a shifting standpoint Manual is a cake walk, but a lot of people have to get the feel of the clutch. when to disengage etc, some people grew up driving automatic, quite naturally there's gonna be a learning process, clean take offs require practice, & a lot of ppl tend to panic & heavy traffic cause they aren't used to the foot motion of clutch gas & break,but the more you drive manual the better you'll become, I think everybody should at least LEARN how to drive a stick. But as for personal preference, that's totally up to them. I'd say automatic is way more convenient than stick. & allows room for a little more error, cause when you're driving a stick, there's little room for error, someone's transmisson preference doesn't make them inferior or superior to another, get off your high horses...

    you're really good man. I just got my first stick on Saturday (WRX) and I've driven a manual car before but never owned one. It can be a bit intimidating and I've stalled like 5 times driving it alot for the past few days. 1st gear just gets me sometimes and I have a "heavy" foot so I'm still getting used to the sensitive accelerator. Everything else is fine is just that first gear is not as smooth and easy as I want just yet. I will get it with practice though! Vid helped out alot...I'm trying to time the clutch engagement and timing me giving it gas at that point too much and just need to find the right balance of clutch release and gas. Seeing your footwork you have a good balance it's just very quick, which of course comes with practice and the feel of your car

    the hardest thing I find about driving a manual is being in up hill traffic

    • @TheRaviotar
      @TheRaviotar 8 років тому +29

      +mysticmeg Use the handbrake to keep from rolling back. A lot of new manual transmission cars have a hill-hold feature that stops you from rolling, too. It is tough when someone's tailgating you, though.

      +Eddie Lombera anyone can do it with the handbrake. But since the hills are really steep in SF you gotta avoid rolling back as little as possible because people pull up real close. I went to Daly City couple weeks ago. No big hills there. Except a stoplight going up Guadalupe canyon parkway. Even if you move fast you still roll back a little because you got gravity working against you. Maybe 2-3 inches rollback

    Why do some Americans think it's so hard to drive a manual? I'm a 17 year old girl and I can drive one, in England you have to learn in a manual car anyway

    • @kennethdeyoung6471

      As others have said many cars in America are automatic

    • @SKRUBL0RD
      @SKRUBL0RD 9 років тому +13

      ***** 99% of cars are made automatic because when the technology came out everyone flipped their shit and tried it and it sold like hot cakes and just took over. Why do extra work when you don't have to? I personally prefer manual for enjoying driving but for everyday it's nicer to be able to keep a hand free. It's not about being too hard, just most of the cars made/imported here come automatic anyway and people buy them and that's just the way it is.

    • @duralick
      @duralick 9 років тому +12

      ***** Being a 17 year old kid who drives an automatic in the US, I have only seen 2 manuals up close my whole life. So for that reason it seems sort of impossible lol.

    • @After4th
      @After4th 9 років тому +4

      ***** Probably mostly because it's cheaper to own a car in the US and essential too, being so spread out with not many transit options. Less a privilege.
      Gas cost a lot less than Europe, not caring as much on fuel economy even when manuals perform better. You'll likely find them on sports cars and trucks.
      I'm sure automatics are as common in Asia. China's growing economy, probably many automatics, contrast 20 years ago.
      They're common in Japan. I think you have to demonstrate you 'can' drive a manual in the test.

    • @NosiGlobal

    • @chuckfinley1075
      @chuckfinley1075 5 років тому +4

      @Joe Figueroa
      Manual transmissions have plenty of advantages.
      - For some individuals, a manual transmission can provide a more pleasurable driving experience.
      - They are also more reliable than automatic transmissions.
      - Less maintenance.
      - New manual transmission vehicles cost less than their counterparts.
      - Braking is better due to having a lighter transmission. Also, if the brakes malfunction for some reason, the car can be stopped by downshifting.
      - If the battery is dead, the car can be push started.
      - Improved driver awareness that corresponds to safer driving habits. Less distracted drivers on phones.
      - More control.
      - "Disadvantages" like the learning curve, uphill starts, heavy clutches, and the "irritations" of traffic are all factors that are overcome very quickly with a manual transmission. Once an individual has grown accustomed to a manual transmission, the "disadvantages" will have disappeared. On the other hand, some disadvantages for the automatic transmission cannot be overcome and owners will have to deal with the higher maintenance, costly repairs, less control, and overall less pleasurable drives for the whole duration of ownership.

  • @avtawf
    @avtawf 10 років тому +6

    At 5:15, why can't you just shift to neutral and let the car get close enough and brake if the car is stopped in front of you? Why do you have to downshift?

    • @matthewrisley9070
      @matthewrisley9070 10 років тому +4

      generally speaking, you don't want to stay in neutral if u don't have to. reason being, if someone cuts in front of you or a child runs into the street, being in neutral won't give you the ability to move your car in emergencies. you can obviously still break, but its just added "security" if you will. If I'm lazy i normally just do neutral too. also down shifting (if done right) as you see with his heel-toe motion, can also save your brake pads and cut down on costs. some people down shift, and swear by it, others say it ruins x, y, and z parts. research it on the web and make ur own decision on that too :)

    • @avtawf
      @avtawf 10 років тому

      Matthew Risley But brake pads are much less expensive than if you wear down the clutch or mess up the transmission. So I guess the only the reason is if you still want the car moving forward after you brake?

    • @matthewrisley9070
      @matthewrisley9070 10 років тому

      LiNingAir and that is one of the sides of the argument on whether to engine break/ downshift or not. That break pads are cheaper. But the other side says if done correctly you lose no wear and tear on your other parts and save your break pads. I'm no expert so I'm sorry I can't give you everything. But research it and make your decision based off people who know way more than I do :)

    • @StevesTradeInc
      @StevesTradeInc 10 років тому

      Main different is driving preference and how soon you like to replace Clutch vs replacing brake pads + rotor.

    • @Reason4Termination
      @Reason4Termination 9 років тому +2

      StevesTradeInc I'd choose my brake pads anytime of the day. Heel toe down shifting only good for the tracks imo. Everyday roads are pretty much a straight line here in my place. I just coast with the fully pressed clutch and brake. Then select the gear needed if acceleration is needed.

      @aldionsylkaj9654 10 років тому

      I'm no driver, but clutch, first, ease of clutch, add a bit of power, once you reach that speed in first that your car hits on idle rpm or like 800 rpm then let go completely, go fast clutch, gear up, let go, drive. If your starting your car from up hill, then the e brake would come in handy, as you hold the clutch halfway, add power and key go of e brake, if you apply enough clutch and power your car shouldn't move back and then you just add power and let go of clutch. Practice on your own, best way to learn.but researching techniques and applying it with your style, it's best way to drive.

    I am no expert at driving but why is such a thing driving a manual in USA? In my country and well in almost every country is common sense that you learn to drive in a manual...and the crapier the car the better cos that helps you to have better control
    a tip: 1 gear is only to start moving the car... you are not in a race that you have to shift at 5000rpm..and dont leave the clutch press if you are not moving and when driving dont leave the foot on the clutch, those thing fuck up the clutch

    Ok thanks ! when the car is parked uphill to make a move all you need is to obviously start the engine and press the clutch all the way down (with the handbrake on) change to gear one and then press the accelerator a little bit and release the clutch simultaneously as you let go of the gas peddle right. I did that way but still the car stalls and tends to roll back.Is it because i need to give more acceleration or have i released the clutch too quick ?

    Been driving manual for a little bit, but if you are in stop in go traffic in a city, can you be in 1st gear the whole time without stalling? Like going at slow speeds from say 1-10mph, will you not stall, only if you are at a complete stop in 1st? Then if course you would just push the clutch in if you're stopped, oor neutral if you'll be sitting for a while.

      starting off like you do, you're not seeming to burn it, dont worry, if you're seeing white smoke it might be related to something else, however if you smell something like burnt rubber when you drive off regularly without an aggressive start it might be that the clutch is f***ing up, but the way you drive off if you drive of easily not releasing the clutch abruptly you shouldn't be burning any clutch material.

    i dont get it, whenever i release my clutch too fast, it stalls n stopped.

      Jhing Abapo I believe there is a benefit in learning auto first. If it's your absolute first time driving ever, learning first on stick will give you more challenges at once: learning to alternate between clutch, accelerator and steering. Steering may not sound so hard but usually beginners over steer or under steer and it can be dangerous. That's why I would rather recommend (if you can), to learn auto first to dominate the steering challenge first and then tackle down the stick and clutch :)

      @jrr2617 8 років тому

      +Peace Ninja Or just learn in a manual, so you can legally drive both manual and automatic (in the UK) and so you don't waste money on both manual and automatic lessons. You'll pick the steering up learning in a manual just as easy as you would in an auto.

      J R R I tried teaching a friend how to drive my little honda stick shift. That was his first time ever driving and he managed to make gear changes better than steering safely. That was even after I posted this comment. As I suspected, he over and under-steered at turns which scared the shit out of me. So I kicked him out my car lol

    When you press the clutch in, while not in motion, and press the gas as if you're doing a fast start, is that riding the clutch? Or only if the car is moving?

  • @gi8809
    @gi8809 11 років тому

    I have a question. I've driven only stick diesels and so far all I have to do is let out the clutch without touching the gas and it won't stall. And with normal gasoline cars you just have to give gas while letting out the clutch? Sorry for any mistakes or misunderstandings, english is not my native language.

    damn lol you're really good with the manual!! not 1 stall during traffic!!!
    I'm still learning though but occasionally, I stall the car during traffic or during an uphill stop, where you have to move forward quickly and not let the car roll back, it's tough for me, if you made a video on uphill stop & launch, it would be really cool!

    Can you press the break with out the clutch if its just a break tap?
    Also should you down shift when slowing down or can you slow down from say 4th then shift to 1st or to come to a stop?

    does this sound right? i have a mazda with a sticky clutch, when im trying to start in first i let off close to the catch point, then i add some gas (i try to get it any where from 1200-2000) then after it grinds for a second i slowly let off

  • @Youtubepoiuytre

    So is it normal to ride the clutch during slow traffic like in the middle posts of this video? I assume that if you didn't have the clutch depressed somewhat during slow speeds like this, then you would stall right? Do you do this in 1st and 2nd only?

    Suppose Your car's tire is stuck in hole. Then how does this friction point, gas combination work ? Because the clutch reaches biting point, you start applying gas and car doesn't move as tire is stuck in a hole in the road, we apply more gas. But at this time, do we have to keep the clutch pedal at biting point for a long time or release it fully as we apply more gas ? Because car doesn't move, we are tryna get it outta the hole.

  • @hellomoto170

    Do you wait for the car to make that shaky noise before putting your foot down on the clutch? I always use that car shake sound as an indication but feel it's amateurish, any other way to know exactly when to clutch?

  • @ModMINI
    @ModMINI 11 років тому

    That is what I do in traffic. It is helpful to be able to see 3-4 cars ahead. Then, you just kind of choose an average speed that avoids needing to brake and accelerate. Its tricky to do but is sometimes the only thing to keep me entertained during heavy traffic.

    It will not hurt the car at all unless you go below quite a bit below the engine idle speed. Above idle speed, it's just like regular driving, except the wheels are pushing the motor around instead of the other way around.

    Driving stick used to be a difficult thing to ponder. but it's the same concept if you ride quads or dirt bikes. you let off the clutch slowly and then use it every time you shift gears. the only thing that makes it scary for some (and me at one point) is your doing it on the open road

My parents tell me you have to put it in neutral...the internets says you can do either but when the clutch is pressed it wears down some bearing/cables. Any idea?
