    Came back after all these years for some nostalgia, and see a lot of people as well learned from you. I was a teenager, and at 18 boought my first manual, a 93 Altima, never having driven a stick before and only watching videos to study. And even 13 years later it's still a special memory that I'll never forget, the pride of being able to drive the car home that day and out your methods into practice.

    Man I’m 29 now and I was sat here telling my wife about the story of how I learned stick when I was 17. I watched your videos on repeat everyday for weeks, went out and bought a 99 Civic 5 speed when I never touched a stick before. I somehow managed to get the car home, stalling at so many red lights. You’re part of that memory

    Yeah having the clutch down all the way engages the release bearing and disconnects the clutch from the flywheel completely. No danger in wearing out the clutch if it's pressed down all the way

I turned it on started it .. I put it in first released the clutch but I didn't give it gas and it jerked exactly how you showed on the video.. So I got on UA-cam and typed in how to drive stick shift and your vid was the first one so I clicked on it saw the 1st few minutes.. Started my car again.. Btw this is all happening

    Comes down to personal preference. Some may love it, some may hate it. Everyone who loves it finds it fun. I find it fun lol. I'd say get your first car as a manual. Then for your second car you'd know for sure if you want another manual, or you'd know if you're definitely getting an auto and never going back to manual. Hope that helped. :)

    Nice! after this, the next lesson is the rev-match downshifting (or heel-to-toe downshifting), the best way to downshift while braking. You push in the clutch with left food, top of your right goes on the brake pedal to slow down, and the heel of your right goes to give the engine gas to match the engine RPMs to the transmission ratio of the new gear you are going into. This will prevent a big jerk when the revs of the engine don't match the revs of the transmission... piece of cake ;)

    Honestly, you guys that think it's too hard to drive manual and would rather buy a manual really are missing out... After you learn the basics, it's fine, and you actually have more fun driving. If everyone just did what was easiest for them, we would probably still be in the dark ages. Jeez, give it a chance at least. @s0ggyrice, I've been driving stick for while now, but I'm still constantly finding things to help my driving improve in all your videos. Keep up the good work!

    One minor gripe. Engaging the clutch - foot down on it, does NOT wear out the clutch. *Note, you are more specific later when you show "riding" the clutch - which is definitely bad. I saw this video from your quick shift video - excellent BTW. I'm a road racer. We don't use the transmission to slow down the car. That's what breaks are for. Brake pads are a lot cheaper than transmissions. This is why heel-toe works on a track. Slowing for a turn, you're clutched in and rev matching to a lower gear, then letting the clutch out. Race cars without synchronous transmission MUST be exactly rev matched on downshifts, just like in your quick shift video. In a race, if a synchro dies, you shift exactly as you showed.

    Yes, if you're rolling in Neutral, you can still put it into 1st gear. But, in most cars (including mine), make sure you're rolling very slowly if you're selecting 1st gear. Usually you can just select 2nd gear if you're already rolling.
    UNLESS, you're on an uphill. Rolling slowly on an uphill, select 1st gear. You need higher rpms on hills.

  • @mufasa416
    @mufasa416 14 років тому

    When you shift from 1st gear to 2nd you will always release the gas slightly as you press the clutch. Kind of like a trade of, so as you release the clutch you'll step on the gas. The reason you release a bit is because it will start to over-rev and RPMs might then be to high for 2nd but more equiped for third. When in a parcking lot 2nd gear is better also, but you have to play with the cluch a bit due to frequent stops.

    It doesn't take long to downshift, takes about a second or maybe even less. You can downshift before the turn, during the turn, or after the turn. Most people would recommend before the turn tho.
    If you have to brake quickly because you never seen the turn coming, you can still brake quickly. Just push in the clutch and the brake at the same time to prevent stalling. Then while you're in the turn you'd be able to downshift without causing any problems. :)

  • @INumba1Stunna
    @INumba1Stunna 12 років тому

    He was saying it's best to go to neutral when coming to a stop. But, to go into neutral only the second before bringing the car to a complete stop. He was pretty much saying not to see a red light ahead and immediately shift into neutral and then continue braking for like 5-10 seconds in the neutral position.
    So stay in whatever gear you're driving in (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.), then start braking, while still braking, before you come to a complete stop push the clutch in, then drop it to neutral.

  • @tristramcoffin926
    @tristramcoffin926 3 роки тому

    I am watching this because I am getting used to a Mini clutch. I have had manual transmission before but I am finding that engaging the clutch into first in the Mini to be different than past cars. Typically, the conventional wisdom is to find the bite point at 1500 to 1800 rpm and when it engages and the rpms fall to give more the gas and release the clutch entirely to 'take off' from a stop. However, I am finding that the rpms fall much faster unless I am slower releasing the clutch and this of course burns the clutch. So, I have been trying to find the best point on the tach to release the clutch enough to find the bite point from a without lugging it out (rpms fall too low) or burning the clutch by remaining on it too long. What rpm level were you at for this video when engaging from first?? It wash hard to see the tach. Thanks. Btw, all the the footwork you did mirrors what I am familiar doing and shifting into 2nd and up is seamless and 'immediate' engine response (as you stated). It's just about finding that spot where engaging from first is smooth instead of luggy/stalling, spinning the tires or staying on the clutch too long to make sure it is engaged. Thanks.

  • @INumba1Stunna
    @INumba1Stunna 11 років тому

    Yes.
    However, right before you come to a complete stop you will need to push in the clutch. Or even if you don’t come to a complete stop, make sure your rpms aren’t too low. If your rpm is too low, you again need to push in the clutch. (right now you obviously won’t know when your rpm is too low, but it takes practice and it’ll be easy to determine when you practice a little)
    If your rpms are too low while in gear, or if you come to a complete stop while in gear, the car will stall.

  • @bfcricky
    @bfcricky 12 років тому

    Yes. If you keep the gas pedal and the clutch pedal pressed in at the same time the engine will just rev because when the clutch is pressed, it disconnects the engine from the wheels.

  • @INumba1Stunna
    @INumba1Stunna 11 років тому

    Yes. For example, you're driving in 1st gear: you'd release the gas pedal, then push down the clutch, then switch to 2nd gear.
    And yes, you can come to a complete stop in any gear. BUT, you MUST have the clutch pushed down (to avoid stalling).
