      @Perseus1275 tbh it’s a whole lot easier to shift a 13 speed than it is a 10. Most of the time you’re going to start in 4th, so you go 4-5 then flip the switch for the high stage and do all your highs and lows. But once you get up to speed and your on the highway, climbing a hill you have more control and power.
      Once you start to climb a hill with a 10 speed, you need to: push in the clutch, take the gear out of its position, give the engine some throttle to drop the gear. With a 13 speed you can shift to the low gear while applying throttle and simply release the throttle to go into 10-low. You still have to use the same technique as a 10 speed when going from 10 low to 9 high but not as often which smooths out your ride.

    2 things I loved about driving was shifting and backing up. During the day I worked the yard in a shunt truck and the afternoon was spent on the big city roads delivering loads or picking up usually either hanging meat or boxed meat. Not many people knows this, but if you put it into low gear, while the ranger is up, you can use it as a 4th gear. It's very useful when going around a corner and you're too lazy to flip the ranger down and back up again to go into 4th. Or you can go from 3rd to Low, then use the splitter to go into 4th hi. This really changes the way you drive the truck

  • @jasoncordill2658
    @jasoncordill2658 Рік тому +21

    Best way to learn is just to experience it. A 13 speed works in an H pattern and to split the gears, it brings your RPM’s about halfway down in your sweet spot when you put it in the high of that gear. With a 10 speed, you have to pull it clear over to the left and back to put it into 6th gear. Your low range only helps to gain momentum from a dead stop.

  • @fireisfire95
    @fireisfire95 Рік тому +8

    Best way I learned is to be gentle with both the throttle and the gear shift. Just let the throttle float down until you can gently pull out of gear, don't let off the throttle all at once. The trick is to eliminate any pressure on the actual gears inside the transmission so they're not binding and can easily disengage.

    When you downshift, blip the throttle to get the RPM where it should be when the transmission shifts into the lower gear.
    It helps if you had a motorcycle at some point when you were a kid.
    My first car was a standard transmission with synchromesh gearing and my GSXR (sportbike)also required good shifting skills.
    Kids today have little opportunity to learn to shift in their cars, so taking the CDL is their first time.

Do you ever shift this way in those situations or do you always go in order regardless?

    At first was confusing on after 4th gear, then to go to 5 low, was the needle, 5 high red needle, and so on. Was better understanding when you got the rig out on the road...THANK YOU for this! NOW I understand even better!

      The reality of the situation is you don't even need to drive it like a 13 speed. Just an 8 speed. 1,2,3,,4...splitter, 5,6,7,8 and then when ur over 60mph on the highway, flip the red switch, let off the gas, and then accelerate again, puts it in the final gear. When slowing down off highway, let off gas, flip switch back, then accelerate, moves it back to 8th and you can downshift like normal etc. That's the way my instructor taught me.

    There are two types of 13 speed transmissions. One has a black splitter which splits the lower 5 gears and one is red which splits the upper 5 gears. Construction vehicles like dump trucks tend to have the black splitter for low range splitting. The 18 speeds have the blue splitter.

    It was cool.
    I already know how, but please show the downshift process for those who don't.
    Even on a trans with full synchro, there's generally a bit of wear, so double-clutching makes life easier when you know what it's about.
    Cheers.

    Just like driving your manual car without the clutch. I did that all the time back in the day. It's something you have to just do a few times to get the feel for it. But once you've got it, you'll never forget.

    No shot you recorded this on my highway (I work for CalTrans). I know exactly where you were lol. That's the end of my northern boundary. Hopefully you're one of "them", but thank you guys for moving over for us. Only the semi trucks pulling big trailers actually get over. The other heavy trucks just don't care and will stay in the lane closest to where we are, creating a more dangerous environment for us.

    I understood most of the things you mentioned, my uncle showed me today and it was essentially what you described. He put me to practice and the truck did stall and I let my nerves get to me but it was my first time. I’m sure as I gain more experience I won’t have to worry anymore about worrying hehe. 😅

    Im brand new at anything manual lol my friend is about to teach me in a 1993 dodge d350 Cummins dually, big bastard. Going to study hard and do my best and hopefully by a few months of learning in a light truck and studying the truck driving book, hopefully i will gain some knowledge of what to do instead of just going to the school not knowing anything at all. The school is also only a 13 speed
