If an aircraft has to stop abruptly a passenger will be thrown forward with just a 50mm belt holding them back. Your entire body weight restrained by a 50mm band across your waist on forward facing seating seats. With rear facing seats your body is supported by the seat back spreading the strain across a bigger area.
