  • With Watches and Wonders just around the corner, I discuss my disappointment with the very average offerings I've seen lately. The big watch manufacturers including OMEGA, ROLEX, TUDOR, IWC, JLC, CARTIER etc need to WOW us, and it isn't happening! Given the huge price increases they've been firing at us for the last 3 years, I think we have a right to expect more than dial colour variations!

    Start looking at older watches, there are so many half forgotten gems out there.

    That Tudor is the definition of rolling a turd in glitter 🤦🏻‍♂️ the Swatch land fill products and the lack of improvements from Omega with thick watches and poor bracelets and low power reserves is very disappointing and boring. A while dial stuck on an old model isn’t a new watch 🤦🏻‍♂️ the Black Bay company is becoming very boring too. I think the micro brands might be becoming more interesting 🤔

    Another awesome video! As much as I am looking forward to the W&W releases coming out (like a kid on Christmas Eve), I am not holding out too much hope. Dont get me wrong, I would dearly love to regularly spend my money acquiring pieces... but the brands actually need to start releasing stuff that is super attractive to buy, and even when it is just that, their Boutiques & ADs actually need to let me buy it when I walk into the store !

    Beautiful beach 👍. I think the luxury brands ran out of ideas many years ago, that is why they've all been raiding their back catalogues for models to re-invent. Mechanical watches have been around a long time and most things have been tried many times before: If you want something different, I think G-Shock are one of the few brands pushing forward and trying genuinely new things. By the way recession is two quarters of negative growth, negative inflation is deflation and you don't want to experience that ☹️

    I think celebration dial is nice, especially if you own the VTNR. Those two complement each other well. Personally I like freaky looking watches.

    There’s plenty of micro and independent brands that are strikingly different and bold.
    You have probably seen coverage of the recent British Watchmakers Day.
    So varied and something for everyone. It’s just so nice to escape the major brand’s hubris and bs marketing!
    And I must ask-in a previous vid you said you wear watches on your right hand so the crown doesn’t dig into the back of your hand. So why is the left hand Riddler on your right? Riddle me that Batman!
    🤔

    Hi Mark I no what you mean by the new watch releases have been boring recently hope something is released in watches and wonder's that we can all get excited over .a new model would be nice that we can actually can buy and afford with out having to sell a kidney to own it.( that's probably asking to much) Great location brings back the memories of climbing rangatoto in 2006 and the rugby world cup in 2011 great place to live thanks John.

      Thanks John, yes I still think that Omega hold the key to giving us watch enthusiasts what we are looking for. Rolex and Tudor, being basically the same company seem to be on a path of starving the market just enough, to try and make us pay full retail, and wait!

    I take a different view. Needing something new and different all the time feels very ADHD, but altogether in line with the insatiability of contemporary appetites. There is a huge amount of interest for me in looking back and learning about vintage and neo-vintage references. In the modern catalogue, I’d find it fascinating to see a brand taking one of their iconic pieces and rather than fundamentally changing it to peak interest, faithfully remaking that piece, but in every aspect, trying to refine and improve it. That would require a huge amount of critical thinking. For example, a ceramic bezel improves durability, but does it improve the aesthetic? Is there an alternative that might be more true to the tool watch heritage, yet provide the durability of a modern material?

    TBH, I am feeling the same here lately and as matter of fact I stop putting on a watch for the last few days completely. It is so unlike me but I did it and it feels different and good at the same time. I am waiting for the urge again to ‘fall in love’ all over again with my watches which I am sure it will but just wait for that magic moment.

    The moonswatch is made of eco friendly materials.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  5 місяців тому +3

      Eco Friendly is a term that should be used to define substances such as paper, and hemp! There is absolutely nothing friendly about the Moonswatch case material. It's this greenwashing that makes me even more annoyed about those throw-away plastic things

    • @miabeatz80
      @miabeatz80 5 місяців тому +1

      @@TheRandomWatchDude You might be conflating Eco friendly and bio degradable. Eco friendly is more like using recycled materials. It's made of ceramic and caster oil.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  5 місяців тому +1

      @@miabeatz80 Yep I know it means, but it's not eco friendly is it. It's reconstituted plastic or whatever, which is still going to break easily, and end up in landfill etc. So the advantage of steel watches is that they last 100x longer, and over millennia may biodegrade into their constituent parts which is iron, chromium, nickel etc.

    Whoa ! hold it right there Mark , Rolex stuck a rubber strap on a Daytona, what more do you need mate ha ha. The main players are never going to stray too far from the norm because 99% of the watch buying public just want a ' look what I've got ' brand name on the dial , they know this and are not going to jeopardise a trillion quids worth of sales for a shit ton of investment on something 'slightly' out of their comfort zone ' that could fall on its arse. Cheapest option , bang a different dial on it and it will sell like hot cakes. If you need 'wowing' you need to go off piste like Armin Strom , Louis Erard , Kudoke , Konstantin Chaykin etc etc . Mainstream manufacturers... forget it.

    You’re right. They are getting lazy. It’s become like quick fashion.
    Tudor has taken a cue from luxury fashion brands. They’ve ran out of ideas so they make ugly, quirky and gaudy the new trend. (Think Gucci and those grotesque oversized Balenciaga platform trainers on fashion models that look like dorks.) They know there’s an endless supply of idiots who will buy anything because of the brand name.
    Laziness and lack of innovation are not new to the Swiss watch industry.
    BTW, a recession is two consecutive quarters of GDP decline - not inflation. You need to brush up on your economics 101 😂.
