Rolex Grail Watch - aspirational or impossible?
Переглядів 2,1 тис.День тому
Aspiration is what keeps us motivated to carry on achieving more in life. Setting higher and higher standards and always wanting to climb the ladder is the energy that drives improvement. But when does aspiration become impossible? Like the search for the holy grail, what defines a 'grail' watch, and what is my aspirational and impossible holy grail wrist watch?

Micro brands have never really got my excited. They are often a collection of generic parts and often have very colourful, playful dials to add a touch of originality... Meh!!! But there is one brand that I consider to be head and shoulders above the chasing pack. Looking for something a bit different to add to your watch collection? Look no further than DAMASKO. The Turtle is great, but the Citizen NY0086 does exactly the same as the Turtle for half the price. Plus it fits smaller wrists. By the way, great content on your channel and always good to see you covering the more affordable end of the hobby. Best greetings from Germany.
Seiko been going off with the alpinist! Love the spb435 aswell!
Well I wanna say that your life hack tips scared the hell out of me😅...I am a new enthusiast in this watch collecting journey and I can say that I've completed 15% of the journey if I were to describe it, like I'm on the casio stage next is seiko then tissot then longines then on and on, that's the heirarchy going inside my mind...but at the same time I agree with your tips and subconciously these tips were already running inside me and I also believe that its a rabbit hole that we're falling into and it kills time and productivity and goes against the rules of personal finance but at the same time can't help it as I do it not to please others but myself and I've been away from social media for years as people are there only for social validation, just on youtube for knowledge purpose.
You seem like a very smart, self aware guy that knows what the journey ahead looks like. Good luck and enjoy yourself. It does not have to be pain and misery, and I have recently discovered that when you reach the proverbial finish line, all you do is go on another lap of the track. Like a hamster on a wheel.
rubbish 🎉
Die beste Uhr gibt es nicht ! Jeder hat einen anderen Geschmack.
Thing about Seiko... there are so many Seiko watches but can never have a good solid bracelet with a quick extension link 😂 hence why always swaping to a rubber/silicon strap
I agree the bracelets on most models are a disappointment 😞
finally i get to see one of those damasko white dials with a bracelet on! thanks a lot for sharing, more videos of this model are welcome :)
It's a dial to make you smile for sure. I'll make another video on it in a few weeks
I have the PADI version with the blue sunray dial and Pepsi bezel. I was able to choose it as a gift from my company for a 20 year work anniversary.
@webvideofan such a nice gift! I nearly bought the PADI version before but never quite got to it before this one popped up on the secondary market
The Turtle is a fantastic watch. Excellent review of the Turtle. I own three King Turtle models in my collection as I love the comfortable case and wanted the ceramic bezel insert and sapphire crystal. I replaced the stock bracelets and straps with Strap Code Super-J bracelets and Uncle Straps Tropic rubber for when I go in the water. They are equally comfortable on a Nato as well. New Zealand looks like a very beautiful place. Thanks for the great content.
@@swkohnle08 Turtles for life! I'm looking at a 6306 vintage turtle 🐢 and considering it very seriously
The Turtle is a classic, I really need to get one back in my collection, so comfy on wrist. Enjoy your paddle Mark, I’m tempted to get my Kayak out too this weekend, if it’s not too hot! :)
@NATHANSFLETCHER thanks mate. The only thing that stols me from being out on the water every weekend is the wind. Anything over about 10knots of wind is getting a bit too risky with the swell
I own an original 6306 from 77 ,the same year my grandma presented me with my very first watch ( old Soviet mechanical thing) and I was smitten with the whole idea as a 9 year old … Fast-forward 47!!! Years and the habit is alive and well and Seiko ,not surprisingly are taken more and more of my time and respect for number of reasons . Great piece and greatly undervalued considering
@benbiber4135 that's such a cool story! I'm looking at a 1978 6306 right now and very tempted....
I bought this popular video watch from MAMACOO , which was originally priced at a few thousand dollars, but now it's only $160! It's really suitable to pick up feces!
IMHO, Damasko is more of an independent manufacturer than a micro brand. They have in-house capabilities that set them apart from microbrands, which usually need to outsource virtually everything.
@joelcohen4353 I totally accept your view. Personally I decided to call them micro based on their output which will be in the hundreds of units per year.
@@TheRandomWatchDude Hundreds of units? I think that number is low by a couple of zeroes. They aren't producing as many watches as a major brand, but they wouldn't be in business if their output was that low.
Fair enough... but plenty of gold grail pieces could of chosen 😂
I wish that one Omega creates a new 2254.50 with the same specifications with the exception of the movement, tapper bracelet and on the go adjustment clasp. What an awesome watch.
The fact that we’re talking about being yourself in order to buy a watch is quite unbelievable. What a time we live in.
It's surprising how many people don't even have the confidence to go to an AD, because they think they need to conform to something they are not. Just be you
From what I've seen, Trump has a surprisingly tasteful rotation of watches
@@nathanmagnuson2589 Indeed! Mostly gifts from world leaders
“Nice and tacky on the rubber strap now”. 😂😂
@nickmills9265 LOL you still get sweaty either way!
The Gollum watch indeed! how heavy was this thing on your wrist? It's really taking the step to two tone or solid gold that is the jumping off point. I am still in the steel rolex camp, by no means are they "value" pieces - but the step up in cost for gold is almost impossible to recoup - and then you are "that guy" wearing a gold watch 😆if I was ever brave enough to wear one, it would be the 2 tone GMT root beer or the 2 tone or solid gold submariner in blue or black. These are at least passable for human size watches. The all gold Deep Sea is a solution looking for a problem... sorry Mark!
@sambo76 yeh she's a heavy beast but very comfortable too. I agree that the Deepsea in gold is totally whacky idea. That's what I love about it
You can do!! Just odd £50,000 😅 My aspirational but unachievable watch …… no I don’t have one. I am a practical and outdoor person so my dream watches are typically robust and obtainable types. 😂 Submariner green bezel and Explorer 2 polar are in my list.
PX’d a particularly tasteless Rolex I inherited for one of these about 20 years ago now. Not a watch obsessive, wasn’t into all the Bond marketing hype of that era, just loved the design (less keen on the usual Seamaster dial etc). Wore it daily for years, everywhere from rock climbs (!) to black tie functions, picked up plenty of knocks and scrapes, these things are made to be used not stored away in vaults. Had no idea about the Peter Blake link. Now I suddenly find I apparently have impeccable taste in watches and the only ‘proper’ timepiece I’ve ever owned is rapidly approaching cult classic classic… nice! Treating it to a long-overdue service at our local Omega-accredited workshop as we speak…
@InspirationSessions you did well to use and abuse that watch. You've got class! It's a culture classic yes and appreciating in value when everything around it is dropping. Get a good service done and keep abusing it!
Entertaining as always 👍. My Precious 🤣. I do think that watch sums up everything that has gone wrong with Rolex, they used to say the professional models only came in steel cases..... My grail would be a VC dress watch, manual wind, super slim and a watch where yellow gold is the ideal material.
I really like the look of the VC model with the face angled at 45 degrees. The only problem is that as I wear watches on my right wrist, it's twisted the wrong way!
@TheRandomWatchDude Yes it would be hopeless for you, I own a Baltany homage to the 1921 and enjoy wearing it, but a VC will remain a grail for me!
Yay! Timestamp 16.07! Finally can tell how much more matte the black dial is on the SD vs the Sub! Thank you.
In the flesh, the SD dial is very different to the Sub. I prefer the SD dial.
Thank you for sharing!
The Tag was so far down in a list it didn’t even get a picture 😅
@WordMadeFlesh777 haha yeh I couldn't be bothered to find a picture of an Aquaracer! They are very nice watches though!
Trump doesn't wear watches and stay in AUS. Trump is the most powerful man in the world now. You?? Lol.
@srbell67 not sure I understand your point, but anyway thanks for the comment!
@TheRandomWatchDude you bashing trump?
@srbell67 I wasn't bashing Trump! I don't love him and I don't hate him. Live and let live
I think Rolex released a bunch of subs recently. I got offered two from two different ADs within a few weeks. Only bought one.
@spsmith1965 congratulations!!! I think Rolex produces in batches too. There are no Subs for ages and then hundreds appear!
My Holy Grail is a GMT Master ii Bruce Wane on a Jubilee Reference 126710GRNR. Been travelling around but not managed to find one yet. Heading to Auckland in a week so my have a try there. No harm in trying. Could buy one on the grey market but will not pay over RRP on any watch that is still being made.
@EddieDuncan-do1mb Pop into Partridge and The Hour Glass and try your luck. They might have a few watches they need to offload before year-end!
Grail watch for me would be a Rolex GMT-Master, mainly due to my nostalgic love of Magnum P.I, plus it’s a beautiful watch of course.
@NATHANSFLETCHER the Pepsi I guess. As a Bond fan I'm into Submariners and Seamasters
The new VC oversea in green, the best looking watch l ever seen.
@gregoryenright4544 oh yes that is very nice and classy 👌
It is certainly ridiculous
“Sit there like Gollum, in dull light, stroking and caressing it” haha, you’re a laugh, Mark! 😂 Well, my grail is gold too-Vacheron Constantin 222. Never have the occasion to wear it, my friends would disown me and I’d be divorced.
@@mattsa disowned and divorced is a heavy price to pay for a watch!
@@TheRandomWatchDude Yes, Gollum certainly paid a high price for his Precious!
It maybe worth it 🤔😜🤣
I have the answer: the only possible way on this Earth that you could justify spending the money for your grail watch if if your wife decided to give it to you for an anniversary gift. You're welcome. ; )
@@Crazy_Joe_Davola oh yeh baby!
I often thought of the grail being there, at the end of the rabbit hole with no end, and this grail fantasy changed continuously. Until I thought more and realised I did achieve the holy grail. It was right there in my collection, the one I had longed for for 10 years and finally acquired, the one that will be the last one to go, my 1967 321 Speedy. No elusive and pricey Nautilus, no FP Journe, no Richard Mille, no Lange. They dont come close to my 321. It is treasure to me, with emotional value far beyond its monetary value. Yes, Dr Jones, I have found illumination 😅
@robynsjp all this time they were digging in the wrong place! You knew the real answer!
Grail watches really shouldn’t come from a mass produced machine built mid tier watch brand unless you’re confusing hype with exceptional haute de gamme horology
@@johnd-xd9sn it's all relative is my view. A Seiko 5KX could be a grail to some.
@ no. It can’t. Stop the madness.
@@TheRandomWatchDude you dont make any sense with that view...dont use the "grail" term then...just refer to them as aspirational acquisitions
@johnd-xd9sn blimey ok Mr Boring 😴
@@TheRandomWatchDude Ha! Boring indeed but...I'm just saying you cant call an entry level very inexpensive watch of mediocre level build quality a "grail" ...you've gotta reserve that title for something extraordinary even to the most mature collectors.
Yellow gold on that thing is just wrong (for me at least)
@vdan2879 it's so wrong I agree. It's so horribly wrong, that it's cool
Upvoted.
@@Dave-F451 thank you sir
Hi Mark brilliant video interesting to see what people's grail watches are. Everything in life is about timing and for me gollum's watch has been the right timing in life.18 months ago I was talking to my Rolex ad about Rolex models I would like to see and I mentioned that I love my James Cameron and would love it if they made a gold version.( He laughed and said it wouldn't happen) So when Rolex released the gold deepsea I was smitten and after trying it on couldn't get it out of my mind. for me gollum's watch is the best name for this watch and this is how I refer to this watch now.(Rolex have nicknames) At some point in your life the timing might be right for you mark and as you advised me if it doesn't impact your family go for it thanks John 👍
@JohnBowman-ut4dz Hi John, this watch is perfect for you, and all the planets aligned to make it yours. I may still acquire one, one day but not for many years yet!
Nice pick. You're the first UA-camr I've seen giving any love to this watch.
@@powderhousewood thank you. I do really love this watch!
Gotta be a gold VC Overseas for me. The gold DS is definitely cool too.
Overseas is a beautiful model 😍
My grail is a Bathyscaphe. I could technically get it, but I haven't quite psyched myself up to spending that much. I suppose if I don't buy anything through most of next year, I might do it. I'd probably sell a couple of things off, though, which I haven't done so far.
That's the sensible choice isn't it. Save up, liquidate one or two watches and buy your grail. Hmmmm
@@TheRandomWatchDude it wouldn't really be to _fund_ the watch, just to offset the cumulative "cost of ownership" of the collection.
The 18k DeepSea is wonderful, as is the Meteorite Pepsi GMT. Both stretch goals for me, I'd wear either of them anywhere I wish to go.
Stretch goals! That's a nice use of a corporate term! I might pinch that idea!
Finding the holy grail Rolex is same as finding the holy grail wife, not gonna happen but be happy with your choice and stop looking around ;-)
That's a good analogy 👏
It’s easy to get through life with one watch for an extended period of time, it merely takes a high level of discipline. I purchased an Omega Seamaster in 1995 for the princely sum of £895GBP, last week I called time on it. I shall now look forward to a new purchase and start over again!👍😎
Congratulations was it hard to say goodbye?
@ To be honest, no. 👍
Excellent 👌🏽
I totally get it. I'd love a new gold Sub or GMT. But honestly it doesn't fit my lifestyle. If I was driving my Porsche to an exclusive Yacht Club everyday and chatting up beautiful women hanging out at the bar or on the deck of my yacht, yeh it works. But driving my beater Toyota to the supermarket, just doesn't cut it. My true grail is perhaps a Rolex Mil Sub.
I would love to own a Daytona Panda and I'm on the list. I understand my chances are slim... Next on my list is an Explorer 2 polar! That's more achievable and I'd like to continue my watch journey instead of waiting forever for a call I might not get
The Panda is saved for customers who have spent a lot on other watches, preferably other brands too. You've really lost a lot of money on watches before you get a shot at a Panda. The Polar Explorer is a beast of a watch. Great choice!
My grail watch which is achievable for me, is a vacheron constantin overseas dual time solid gold green dial or blue. But I have a long list of watches to get through before I got a vacheron.
I wish my holly grail watch was a G shock, life would be more simple😂. But I am digging my way deep into the rabbit hole so life is hard.
It’s interesting that you think DJT is flamboyant.
