I don't buy my watches for others to like. I buy what I like and want to wear. I could care less about others opinions. I got one life so I'm going to enjoy it to the fullest.
👏👏👏👏👏 The best way to be and collect, the core message of this channel I aspire to have and always try to maintain. Your have class my friend. Thank you, onwards, upwards and best regards. TGV
I find it funny that Tudor is sometimes referred to as the "poor man's watch". But the reality is, when you consider wages, inflation, etc.....the price now days to get into a Black Bay is around the same cost of what someone would've paid 25-30 years ago for a Rolex Submariner. So, in my opinion, Tudor is not really a poor man's watch. Heck, the average person on the street would laugh at us watch geeks if they knew what we spend on some of these watches, such as an Omega or Tudor, let alone the insane prices of Rolex now days!
Tudor is one of the most accessible and capable watch brands out there that offer heritage and quality at its level for its price. The name Black Bay is redundant in so many models but for it to still be called the poor man’s a Rolex…… that is like saying Islander is the broke man’s Seiko…..and it is just stupid to say either of those things 😂
The black bay for me turned into the submariner old school tool watch. Rolex is now a flashy piece of fine jewelry. Tudor seems opposite of that…which I like the separation. Totally disagree with Marc.
Including his cheap shot - it’s the Rolex one can actually walk in an AD, request, and get 1 after a bit of a wait. He sadly assumes it’s a money thing - it’s availability and not wanting to get punked by Grey market prices and subsidize flippers.
Rolex still has the 14060 and the 14060m up into the mid 2000s that are in every way are the "Old Rolex " goodness that shares alot of similarities to the 5513s. So that's an option and I do agree modern Rolex lost sight of what they used to be all about
As someone who's had a little time in the hobby I have to say I used to really appreciate an exhibition case back but today I think if it comes at a cost of making the watch thicker I'd prefer not to have one. If a watch manufacturer gave me the option to have a solid case back instead and take ~1mm off the thickness of the case I think I'd do that almost every time.
Ben Clymer said that the LeMans Daytona with its exhibition caseback is almost exactly the same thickness as the previous model with the solid caseback though.
If they are exposing the movement it should be well decorated. The more I am paying for a watch (especially a newer one), the more I would like to see an exhibition caseback. For example, I think the Tudor BB58 925 does this poorly. Omega I feel does a great job decorating their movements and showcasing them.
Mark has just called my favourite diver a poor man’s Rolex!!!! I disown you sir! Take back everything nice I e said about LIW!!!!;) in that regard however is a Long Island diver a poor man’s Seiko????;) loved the show! Whenever I’m lucky enough to handle a vintage watch I am always surprised at just how fragile they are and how good modern watches are in comparison ! The watches feel like they need to be in a museum behind glass!!!:) ps love my 58’s!!!!!!
I think any Seiko is overrated. Their movements are top notch, but their pricing? meh. All their 're-issues', meh. I'd rather have a Seiko movement in a microbrand and spend my money there than buy branded Seiko with their poor QC. Grand Seiko? At those prices, you are better served buying anything else in the same $$ range.
Yes I know they're boring and everyone has them but the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Speedmaster have always been and will always be my two favorite watches.
I bought this popular video watch from bkuwan , which was originally priced at a few thousand dollars, but now it's only $380! It's really suitable to pick up feces!
True story, I don't pay attention that much to Rolex that when I was blown away by the look of the BB58 gilt on a matching strap and I had to have it, then I found out it's their version of the Sub. Oh well, I guess i own a Sub now. I have weird tastes as the only Omega I like was their discontinued Railmaster. I was ready to buy one of those before I realized I couldn't unless gray market. I also like the fact about Tudor is you can walk into a Rolex dealer to have it serviced. I just learned that too.
Hey there! Thanks a lot for this great video and gotta say, I totally get where you're coming from about the Omega Speedmaster being overhyped. But you know what? Sometimes something's popularity doesn't take away from its beauty, right? I mean, I've been eyeing the Omega Speedmaster "Reduced" (Ref. 3539.50.00) for quite some time now. Sure, it's not the "Professional" version, but it has its perks that really speak to me: 1. It's got a smaller 39mm diameter, which is perfect for my smaller wrist size. 2. Having an automatic movement instead of just hand-winding makes it way more practical for everyday wear. 3. With an ETA movement, maintenance is easier and cheaper compared to an "in-house" movement. 4. Let's not forget about the price point, which definitely makes it more accessible. 5. And the improved water resistance of 50 ATM is definitely a bonus. So yeah, while some may call it overrated, I see it as a gem that's worth saving up for. Can't wait to add it to my collection within the next year! Cheers!
TGV, interesting how people view things so differently, The black bay 58 with mix matched hands and indices makes it so much more interesting then the Palagos to my eyes.
I've been into watches for 20+ years and the BB58 is the only watch to make my heart skip a beat when seeing it in person for the first time. I've been wowed by other watches, of course, but never like that.
I owned the Willard but recently sold it. The movement was very unstable. Accuracy was all over the place but a great watch. Would love an original. Since then I bought a Seiko Tuna Marine master Ninja SBBN035 with the Legendary 7C46 high torque movement and its just one awesome watch. It could be my last Seiko that's how much I enjoy it
You were likely offered it because no one else wanted it. It’s far from a hype Rolex. Though tbh I think it’s a fine looking watch. Though prefer the white dial polar.
Totally agree with you gentlemen. I buy only what I like, not what is considered trendy. BTW, the Black Bay 58 blue is one of my favorite watches and can’t see anything I dislike about it. It fits my wrist perfectly. The bracelet which many dislike is fantastic the way it tapers and drapes down. Super comfortable. The blue aluminum bezel is gorgeous and I like it way better than the ceramic. Its action is perfection. Lume and legibility is outstanding. Build quality is great and the accuracy matches METAS rather than COSC only. My runs +1 sec. per day consistently.
Hans Wilsdorf Foundation owns Tudor and Rolex (their profits head to the same parent company), Tudor is manufactured to be more affordable, with Rolex about 2-3x price of equivalent Tudor. A bit like the brand positioning of Audi>VW>Seat>Skoda (brands in same group). I'm with the commenter above, Orient is more appropriate to be described as the poor man's Seiko.
If they bring back the Date-Day Prince in its original 36mm size it would be like they had a license to print money. Everybody that wants a new legitimate 36mm Daydate in steel would have to go to them, the only other options are a vintage Date-Day and the Paganis with the ST19 movements.
Hey TGV and Mark-you know, every one has their own preference and when the Black Bay first came out, I felt the way TGV does about the square tip of the snow flake hands trying to compliment the round markers. Now, I just love it because I am very picky about watch hands, they have to be awesome and eccentric and when you compare the snow flake hands to the mercedes hands, the snow flake is the much cooler hand than the mercedes. The mercedes hands was mentioned by a youtuber that it was evolved from cathedral hands and it clicked, I now see the mercedes hands as out dated. However, the mercedes hands on the current explorer 2 gen have that snow flake cool 70's vibes. So, Black bay all day for me.
Even though I wear suits 99% of the time, and have a whole collection of Cartier watches that are much more expensive and more suited to this style, I always come back to my Speedmaster. That's how much I love this watch. Absolute perfection
👏👏👏👏 I totally get it, I feel the same way about other watches. I love that you have found that with the Speedy, xtra kudos and respect for the Carty collection too! Wonderful comment and keep enjoying that Speedy 😎🥂 Thank you for sharing that and best regards, TGV
I have some vintage tanks in gold, the current XL in steel, the regular one both in rose gold and platinum. I love those watches, especially the rose gold one, yet most mornings, I have to reason myself not to put the speedmaster on. It puts a smile on my face everytime I look at it.
I own 55 watches and my Omega Speedmaster in saphire sandwich is one of my top 3 favs. It is so legible, so accurate and wears perfectly on my wrist and has microadjust on the fly. My second favorite is my Longines Hydroconquest GMT. I also have two Long Island watches and love them both. One is the Baiting Hollow skeleton watch, which I feel is the most useful skeleton watch ever and is very legible since I had the original hands replaced with a set of black hands. I don't feel that any watch is overrated as long as people are willing to pay the price. The rating is given by the public perception and sales volume. If it is overrated, then sales would dry up.
'The poor man's Rolex' - the mantra of the desperate watch snob who knows that Tudor exposed Rolex for being an overpriced and overrated mass produced brand.
Calling Tudor the poor man's Rolex is like saying a Porsche is a poor man's Lamborghini. Both luxury brands with different identities, one being very staid and conservative with the other more ostentatious. Most likely, if you can afford a $4000 watch you can afford an $8000 watch. Going with Tudor is a choice. I don't want the aggravation or perception that comes along with a Rolex, nor do I think the extra price tag is worth it. The BB58 is an incredible watch purchased deliberately, not as a consolation prize.
I have to disagree with Marc about Tudor being a poor man's Rolex. Once upon a time sure when Tudor watches were cheaper copies of Rolex (funny though that those old Tudors like TGV's are highly sought after now) but now, with the Black Bay line and watches like the Pelagos, they've come into their own. I could've bought a modern Sub but I think the BB 58 is a nicer looking watch with its vintage vibes, so I went with it instead. Now, if Rolex went back to older Sub designs, then I _might_ have to agree with Marc but even then, Tudor is still more bang for the buck. People are too hung up on a logo.
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 Nah I'm not aggravated. I just disagree with him. I understand his point of view. If I wanted a Rolex but couldn't afford it and settled for a similarly designed Tudor, then that would certainly fall under a "poor man's" choice. However, if one is buying a Tudor simply because they see it as a better value proposition while still being able to afford a Rolex or maybe they just have no interest in Rolex, then I'd say the "poor man's" factor no longer applies. It boils down to the motivation of the buyer.
I agree but I have always sold my Tudors bc it simply bothers me that a part of the brand's history and its very first purpose was to be an affordable version of smth else.
@@wux-qj1qj I get that. Looking at the Black Bay Monochrome that was just revealed, it looks too much like a Sub in my opinion. That's an example of where I think I'd just go for the Rolex.
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 I disagree because it's become a meme and the but of stale jokes from internet Rolex fanboys that probably 90% of them don't even own one, but one of their douchebag influencers that they follow own one or a Richard Mille flying around in a rented G4 and these kids worship these guys. It's a tired take just to roll out that comment. Many non poor people buy Citizen, Seiko, and others. So many brands you'd lose count.. Other nice brands to purchase than just, geez, I can't afford a Rolex so I bought this. Rolex gets too much defense of their brand for a mass produced product that people say it is the holy grail of time pieces. Just look at how Social Media can influence people by that lame ass brand Daniel Wellington. A watch you can buy the actual model for $30 on Ali Express. The bs you have to go through at an AD is a joke. I have the cash, but I have to be worthy of your time for you to give me a call a year from now to offer a model I have no interest in? gtfo My wife keeps asking me if I want one for a gift as she would get one knowing I'm a watch guy. I beg her to let it go.
I e been waiting for a new video with Marc and youreself. I’ve also been wanting to tell you after years of hearing you talk about Meditations I ordered a copy and started reading it yesterday man, ima have to re read what I read it’s super deep and am looking forward to finishing it
What got me into watches in the first place was the longevity and serviceability of timepieces. These little mechanical devices that fit on our wrists will out live us, our kids, and beyond. We as a species don't make anything else that lasts that long anymore. So when Tissot made the powermatic 80 and charged $750 for a watch with a plastic escapement, the part of the watch that needs the most resistance to wear and tear, and without the ability to regulate it easily, it flew in the face of everything I love about these mechanical timekeepers and shows what kind of company Tissot is to me. You will see watches from many other companies in working order in 50+ years, but I think you will have a hard time finding a PRX that stands the test of time.
Please stop just blindly following what people on Internet tell you. So what they use some plastic parts, there is no evidence out there showing it being less durable and breaking down. Regulate easily? People regulating watches at home is niche within niche, I don't believe that is deciding factor for anyone really
Spreading myths lol. The powermatic absolutely can be regulated. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean an actual watchmaker can't. They literally use the same regulation method as Rolex and other high end brands. They are also totally servicable, you can swap every single part - it's not a sistem51. Yes, the service dept. will swap the movement to save time but they don't bin them, they refurb them and put in other watches. Tudor does the exact same thing for quick turnaround, as do many other brands and independent watchmakers when it comes to cheaper watches. No one actually repairs any movements under $1000+, they are all swapped for new ones. You may get a clean and lube, but I'd love you to film yourself asking a watchmaker to repair (not swap) a broken movement in a $500 Seiko so we can all see them laugh you out the door. Your "50+ years" comment is hilarious. Not a single watch in Tissot's price range will have its original working movement inside it in 50 years, regardless of ecapement material, because the maths simply ain't mathing. No one will spend the required money to keep the original movement going that long on anything below a Rolex and even that is questionable, maybe I should say anything below Patek. If anything, the plastic escapement powermatics will survive longer without servce than their metal shaving-filled counterparts.
Hi guys, my favorite brands are Marathon and Squale. I love there dive watches! I also buy my watches from Marc from Long Island Watch, 2 Marathon divers, 2 Squale 1521 blue polished and the 009 SKX which is still running. All of my watches spend lots of time in the salt waters, due to my job. I am a commercial lobster diver in the Bahamas 🇧🇸, my crew and myself spend 3 - 4 weeks out on the boat each trip.
Shout out to Marc Frankel CEO of Islander Watches. The 2 pieces he is wearing is stunning. Love to see Urban Gentry do a tour of his factory to show us how the watches are made.
👏👏👏👏 A fine choice and even better, you are open minded enough to watch this, you have my respect! Thank you and stay awesome. Onwards, upwards, and best regards, TGV
I agree and am planning to get a PO later this year. It's just more interesting and a better value for me. The new white dialed speedy looks great but not for $8K.
@@Messier31NGC224 You don't have to worry about any of that with a speedmaster. That's some next level fearmongering. You probably shouldn't use the pushers in the swimming pool to time your laps (like with most chronographs), but that's about it.
It's 2024, and I am planning to buy a BB58. I can't find a single fault in that watch. It has become its own unique style despite its past association with Rolex. Anything rolex is overhyped, in my opinion.
"Poor man's" whatever when the poor man's version is $3,000 to $5,000 minimum. IDK fellas, Tudor and Rolex both seem like overpriced luxury hype that is functionally no better than a Seiko or replica at 1/10th the price. It's not that single watches are overrated but luxury watches overall are overrated.
@@Mister_Phafanapolis I mean, isn't that the whole point of being "luxury"? It's not just watches but basically everything that is priced 100x to 1000x compared to their basic counterpart. Not something the average person would buy, but few enthusiast that has money to spend
@@Mister_Phafanapolis Luxury everything is overrated. Just like guitars, I can buy a custom shop Gibson Les Paul for $10,000 or buy an Epiphone made by Gibson Les Paul for $600 and the difference between them is not $9,400 I'll tell you that. How about that Louis Vuitton handbag? Anybody really think it's worth that much more than a Macy's brand bag?
I decided to rejoin watch collecting l, after over 10 years. having sold both of my vintage submariner Rolex. 83 no date, and 85 date. Both stainless. When I made my first new purchases recently, I bought a Tudor BB GMT and a Speedy Sapphire Sandwich. Both unworn new and both well below MSRP and average gray market. I hear your points but happen to love both, for me. I’ve always wanted an omega Speedmaster or Seamaster, and as I don’t have Rolex money right now as my previous watches have tripled, these are a great start. I don’t want to say hype but the interest the black bays are having, should help make for an easier sale later, if needed to get a next watch. Or get out, cuz sometimes you just gotta sell em…
I'm well thank you. Just got back from a weekend trip to NYC. Unfortunately due to the Easter holiday, the watch stores were mostly closed. Still had a great time though. Now back at work for the week and pretty busy at that. Cheers Alex
A little film tip. It's usually a good composition practice to place the head a little to one side of the frame so that you have more space in the direction you are looking to. In this case you place your head a little to the left and Mark's head a little to the right. Avoid the middle so you have a little more dynamism on your composition. Thank you for the great content as always
Very off beat and depressing guys, but cool and lovely to hear the contrary opinion, rather then all the follow the herd blogs. I too have unusual tastes. I acknowledge that a modern mechanical watch is jewelry, and embrace it. My favorite Rolex is my TT DJ Wimbledon, my favorite brands are Alexander shorokhoff and Itai noy. The one comment I would make, is that I buy a watch to wear and like. Whether it becomes over hyped after purchase, is over hyped before, or is a minority, doesn't really concern me. For example my favorite "below the radar - hide in the shadows" watch is the Pelagos 39mm, which I can pull on anytime, with a t-shirt, not care about setting the date, and practically not feel during the day. The fact it's a Tudor, the brand is insulted by some as a poor mans Rolex, or over hyped by others, does not concern me. I can't see any competition for the Pelogos for what it does in titanium. Slightly diverted at the moment by a love affair with Hasselblad .....
Fun video, guys. After jumping into watches for real 6 months ago, I’ve begun to realize my favorites are the quirky afordables. I don’t have any upper high ends, just three as I see it. Ball Engineer II Marvellight, Ball Hydrocarbon Deepquest, (great just in case I drop into 9000 foot seas!), and an Alpina SeaStrong 300 Heritage , such a beautiful watch. All three are amazing, but I find I wear and enjoy more so my two Vostok Amphibias, or Timex Navi XL auto or super cool Seiko Recraft Snkn37 on a 24 mill bracelet! I have just under a dozen watches, and my favorites seem to all be under $350. I think part of it is a mindset that says , “save the exspensive ones for occasions “, I’m working on breaking out of that barrier, but there’s something more to it. There is just something about affordable cool watches that is just fucking super cool! I look forward to enjoying my new found hobby for many years to come.
I tend to root for budget and Micro brands. Christopher Ward is one I have been interested in lately, as for budget brands Timex is getting my attention for going back to Automatics, the Marlin in a green or blue dial is lovely, and the Waterbury Classic Auto in white is nice if you get the one without the numbers. I bought the one with numbers and it's basically a fancied up weekender which I also like alot.
Completely agree about Tudor. I want to see something other than Black Bays from them. I type this while wearing a black bay and being a certified Tudor fan boy.
I find that the 58 is so well made and perfectly proportioned for a sports watch. It borrows from classic Tudors and Rolex without being a slave to an exact copy . It really is its own thing. The gilt bezel gives the 58 a warm feel, the red triangle offers a pop of color paying homage to the Rolex Big Crown, the chunky coin edge crown is so satisfying to wind with a refined matching coin edge bezel and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It’s different from the more traditional lollipop style. By the way, 39 mm is on the smaller side for a modern sized sports watch. I think anything smaller is playing vintage territory.
To me, I found the Swiss diver I fell in love with, (BB58 with matching strap) and now if Tudor doesn't innovate, I already have what I need from them. Only Seiko and Casio do I own more that one brand model.
I like to wear the watches I don't mind denting, but I do like good looking, well spec'd watches... Therefore I tend to wear chinese made ones for everyday use! I have a gorgeous vintage golden JLC that I got from my dad, but I must have put it on my wrist around 5 times in 30 years! "overrated" is totally personal and subjective, a never ending topic. It is something you don't think other people should like, but that's none of your business, it is theirs! If you absolutely adore a watch you're probably overrating it, but that's fine, don't feel bad about it. Great videos BTW
My pick is the Speedmaster. I had never really gotten the hype, but I bought one because I listened to all the noise that every real collector should have one. I don't think it lasted 2 months in my collection. I found it boring and I also just didn't think the quality matched the price tag. Sharp edges on the bracelet and case and the winding action was not good. Not ideal for a manual wind. I get that it's an icon but it's just not for me
Hi guys, great video, just two mates shooting the shit about watches- question? How come you guys never discuss Breitling? I want to get a quality watch , bit only want to spend $3k max, what do you suggest?
'A poor man's Rolex'. Dear me. And there's me perennially using that expression to instantly identify a watch dilettante. Still do mind. But what's Mark excuse? I own some 50 watches (down from 150. Yikes). Rolex, Patek, Audemar, Vacheron, JLC, IWC, Grand Seiko, Glashutte. You name 'em. I've pretty much owned 'em. And too many more besides including the usual suspects of course. Submariner, Seamaster 300, Speedmaster Pro etc etc etc And yet I also own a blue BB58...which I absolutely love and wear often. Personally, I have never bought a watch to show off, nor EVER dissed any man's watch or collection based on price, since there really is nothing more low class. So come on Mark. Get your head out of your ass ;) Or perhaps explain, your comment in the face of a collector like me?
Did you missread the title of the video, bud? BTW, Tudor is a junk watch. Nothing remotely unique or interesting about it besides history, which Has ZERO correlation to the product today. Tudor is a previously dead brand brought to life via marketing. They have one in-house movement on a watch (Pelagos) that looks like any run of the mill diver. Their most popular watch, BlackBay, uses ETA movement.... like a million other brands. Literally NOTHING unique or special about Tudor. Go buy a $300 Glycine Combat Sub instead (yes, they look the same because Tudor ripped off the look) and save yourself a fortune.
Had planned to treat myself to a Speedmaster Moonwatch for my 60th birthday. However, did not work on my wrist. Now I am a happy owner of three Bulova Lunar Pilots. Less hype, much better story as the „second“ watch on the moon, that replaced a broken Omega.
I grew up with Omega. My first „expensive“ watch was the Omega Seamaster Professional 300 (quartz) that I bought in 1996 when I was in the Bond movie. It was on my whrist for 28 years. The price was 800 €, 2-3 times cheaper then a Rolex. I loved the design of the Omegas and I loved my Omega. 28 years later I sold my entire watch collection, including that Seamaster Professional (because I was in fear that the electronic movement once is going to break down), different vintage Seamasters, vintage IWCs, vintage Rolexes etc. I now own only a vintage Omega Speedmaster Day-Date/Mk 40 and a Submariner 14060M…my grail watches. I have to say that all modern Omegas are ocerpriced and overrated. I would never pay 10k for a steel Omega, same price like a Rolex. Omega was allways 2-3 times cheaper then a Rolex. Same with Breitling, Longines, Tag Heuer etc. Prices going crazy with those brands.
You can service those quartz movement's. I have a few quartz Heuer's from the early 80s and a Tag Heuer Night diver 989 113 with the ETA 955.112 and all the movement's have been serviced and function flawlessly
I have the same Omega quartz and still with me after 24 years . I started collecting because I thought I need a new SMP 300, owning the two Omegas I liked more the old one.
If I had the coin I would absolutely get a Speedmaster “sapphire sandwich”, manual winding and very cool looking movement (no rotor!), domed crystal. Hell yeah.
Marc is 100% correct about the Speedmaster. That being said, my 1861 Speedmaster is my favorite watch. I liken the Speedmaster to the Porsche 911. There’s a version for everyone at all price points. If it’s what you love then you gotta have it and nothing will suffice.
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 I heard him say to someone that he doesn't like Seiko, but then he sells them and hypes them up on videos, so call me a skeptic a little.
I pick the shirt out then I pick the watch. I change my watch almost every time I leave the house. lol I find myself wearing my modified ISL-35 as my daily beater the most. White dial, day/date, red/black bezel for timing, female end links, and a diver's extension. Watch bracelets annoy me that don't have a quick adjust feature as a daily. I go places and look around the room to see what watches people are wearing. Generally, people over 50 might have a "conventional" watch but often are wearing a smart watch. Under 50, I rarely see "conventional" watches at all but see mostly smart watches. I think the watch industry as a whole might be doomed. I hope I'm wrong but I just like to think. lol Thanks for the videos!
Finally, someone said it! The snowflake hand belongs on the pelagos. It doesn't look at home on the black bay. The black bay deserves its own hour hand. When I look at the black bay, it's like Sinn putting U50 hands on the 104...
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean should be the king 😎 Unbeatable specifications, very classy design and execution. Ultimate wearable diver. Second, I love the Rangemaster. Esto quod esse videris. A motto any real man should live by. It’s an elegant simple toolwatch. As a watch was designed/supposed to be. 😉
Any watch that makes me feel scared to be a victim of an assault and/or robbery... any watch above 2000 bucks. Got some, but keep them under lock and key. Sad but true.
I think the hype with Tudor is that compared to many of the watches out there that watch enthusiasts like, it is probably one of the most affordable. Along with that it carries the aura of Rolex. I know I may be way off in my thinking but I'm a person that has an extremely limited budget who can't afford a Tudor. I hope one day to have one because I can tell you I would purchase a Tudor long before I shell out the much bigger duckets for a Rolex or anything else in that price range.
I owned an Omega Speedmaster broad arrow 1957 chronograph. I loved the look, but I bought it without wearing it first. It never got much wrist time so I traded it for a Seamaster Planet Ocean, which I love and wear often. It has more wrist presence than my Rolex SeaDweller 43. You can spot that watch from a mile away, unlike the Sea-dweller/ submariner, which so many other watch companies have copied.
superb video guys!!! --- I have to say that Citizen is kicking it up a notch, and Seiko has stalled at Meh for the price paid! --- just got one of the Citizen Promaster Fugu divers (automatic) with the black puffer dial and yellow inner bezel, the quality on them has gone through the roof, very impressed. my last promaster diver was purchased 2 years ago and it's an eco model and I do enjoy it (put an islander SS band on it) but this Fugu is just gorgeous and has a sapphire crystal on it-- even the rubber band is better (softer, more pliable)-- upgrades all around--- wow.
I have to say I'm with Mark on the Speedmaster. I feel I must be missing something about it. I want to like it more, but I've never had any strong interest in owning one or even going to see one at a boutique. I currently own a BB54 and I absolutely love it. I owned the Black Bay Black 41mm from 2015 with the ETA movement and smiley dial for 8 years. I loved that watch. You were definitely aware of its heft though which encouraged me to sell eventually. Had a BB58 briefly. Never connected with that one. Sold. Tried on the 54, and it was a done deal. The comfort and wearability is something else. It has such a balanced feel to it. Needless to say I am a big fan overall of the BBs. Great video, as always, guys:)
My preferred watches from my little collection are: JaegerLeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1968 as it is a beautiful dive watch with an alarm which I used for wake up for about two years whilst working offshore. Omega Seamaster « No Time To Die » because it is light, titanium, all mate, subdued, under the radar, etc… perfect for the discreet gentleman. IWC Ceramic Doppelchronograph from 2006. It is all black, stealthy, under the radar, people think it’s plastic so again a rather nice but discreet watch. IWC B.Uhr 52 S.C from 1941. Because of its large size I cannot wear it but I find it beautiful because of its tool watch simplicity.
After seeing and handling the new white speedy, I have to say it's awesome and that movement is a joy to view. This coming from a rolex fan boy. I'll get one for sure.
I’ve been thinking about the video and feel the Speedmaster deserves an advocate. Yes, it’s been around for ages now but it was the watch that did the most aspiring thing of all. And with the new space challenges today a whole new generation is discovering it. That’s why the one with caliber 3861 is so great. It’s far more accurate and looks crisp. Also the design is really inspiring. What watch still looks so good after so many decades? And the latest Snoopy edition (blue) with the animation on the back is really fun and beautiful. The thing is however that the cost has risen immensely… I think that scares some people of. It used to be the one iconic watch everyone could own. My two cents 😎
That’s a very interesting topic that needs to happen. Squale in my opinion has the best bang for the buck. But I was curious as to your opinion on the Tag Hueur formula one caliber five it seems to be popular these days
Great discussion as always! Re: the hype around the Rolex Explorer, have you ever considered, TGV, that the fact that you owned one and loved it, made a video about it and raved about it on so many of your videos may have accidentally started the hype? :D
Any watch you need to or have to queue-up for, to buy whether be a Rolex or a Swatch x collaboration. Non-Smart watches, that are connected to your mobile phone. I am paranoid, I do not like my appliances, watches etc. communicating with each other. Most watches with a "celebrity" endorser.
Trivia question: has TGV ever worn an Islander watch? Not sure it’s his style. I love Mark but I’m not a fan of his Islander watches. As always, great video boys
Not at all, you still have better taste then most people on this planet and it really ties a collection together. Love your YT name btw, the dude abides! Thank you ad best regards, TGV
Massively underrated - the noughties omega Railmaster 36mm. I’m not sure why as it’s even worn but a couple of high profile people - Daniel Day Lewis and Cillian Murphy, to name two - it has such a low profile on UA-cam too, barely any videos. TGV - I reckon you would love it - it’s such a great size - I’m part of the small wrist club too - I would love to see you review it 🤙
I tried to buy a new one. Sadly I found out they were discontinued again. All these people that crow about why brands sell certain reissued models over innovation, well, the safe models sell.
Is the Speedmaster overhyped … absolutely … is it justified …absolutely. it’s history obviously but also the decade it became iconic was a moment of hope in the a time when humanity was literally on the brink of nuclear war. The Apollo years were truly awe inspiring and never will be felt again by the world who for a moment looked outside of themselves. I believe it’s the most iconic watch that just so happened to be in the right space 🌍at the right time … could have been a Casio / Bulova / Seiko .. but it was Omega
@@paulmousley2634 I want to like it because of it's history and I'm an Air Force guy who grew up in the space age. Christ, I was trained and on the Shuttle recovery team if it diverted. It just doesn't do it for me, but I understand.
T4YC. Speedy: yes, (try a Chronostop). BlackBay: yes, but it had a great run, (all success leads ultimately to failure. Love a Pelagos. Fastrider and Hydronaut 2 are excellent). Seiko: yes. (It's all over. Tired and old). Tissot PRX: yes. it's very entry level. Titanium: it's fecking lovely. the colour and aging are so special. Daytona / AP RO / PPnautilus yes, OVER!
He went after the Speedmaster AND called Tudor “the poor man’s Rolex.” His target list for his next guest appearance: puppies, kittens, and grandma’s apple pie. 🤣
Do you have any classy suggestions for a quartz (*gasp* I know) watch for heavy-duty field use? Looking for good build, good water resistance but still one that looks classy. Any companies that make some with custom dials would be welcome, too.
Victorinox alliance is one of my favorites. I own one in just about every color. They have the look of a field watch but with sapphire crystal and good finishing, making it a great dress watch as well. 100m of water resistance is great for every day and they regulate the Ronda movements.
I think a mention should be solar watches. I hate my Seiko solar watch because whenever I pull it out, it’s dead. I’m not going to buy a light bulb to keep it charged up so what’s the point of it?
The Speedmaster is the embodiment of overhype. The engraved case back basically saying "hey! look at me! I went on the moon 50+years ago, and you should bend the knee before my self-proclaimed might" is such a turn off. I don't understand how any adult person can wear this. It's like wearing a 7000$ Captain America tee shirt, hoping that people will think the tee shirt gave you some of his powers. Last, the "look at my watch, it went to the moon" thing is utterly ridiculous. Your watch didn't go to the moon. You bought it in a mall. Rant over. Cool video 🙂
But there are many watches that could be similarly criticised. Submariner - do you go diving? FXD - are you a navy seal? Fleiger - are you a pilot? Tag Monaco - do you race cars? I really think the speedmaster is the most iconic chronograph. I don’t own one but I think it’s cool. I also think the Apollo missions were amazing. You’ve maybe hit a sore point as I’m currently drifting towards getting a CWC even although I’ve never been in the military. I am a bit worried about the walter mitty aspect 😅

Indeed. Life is a contradiction, I am a walking one, living in a world moving thousands of miles per hour through space, while I seem to be standing still, loving a dated largely inaccurate mechanical technology on my wrist, replying to a comment online via digital machine using a 5th century language. Great point, but now my head slightly hurts, thank you. 🤣😅🙏 Best regards, TGV P.s. I adore both the Speedy (in most forms) and the Back Bay, dare I say, unequivocally pure class, both classic, great taste, both grail worthy, amazing heritage, design, etc, and I welcome/congratulate anyone to love and enjoy them. But that does not mean they are not overrated or over hyped. A watch can be great and overrated at the same time, maybe that is the ultimate contraction here? 🤔
Haven't watched the video yet, but my pick would be 'the Moonwatch'. While it both deserves its iconic status and probably overplays it a bit, my main gripe is how it overshadows all the other Speedmasters - especially considering that the SPEEDmaster is a racing chronograph first and foremost, not a 'space watch'. And purely in terms of aesthetics, I actually prefer a lot of the watches from other model lines ('57, First Omega in Space, Racing, Date, Dark Side of the Moon, Grey Side of the Moon, etc.). _The_ Moonwatch almost looks a bit bland in comparison. It's all matte black with a bit of white and has a pretty flat looking dial without a lot of details. That's why I, after having first considered it and then the FOiS, ended up with a grey sunburst dialed Speedmaster Date with bordered subdials and a bit of red text. It might not be as 'sought after' or hold its value as well as 'the Moonwatch', but I just find it to be much better looking.
TGV, with all due respect, Rolex Explorer that you had before the “hipe”, you are the one who created that hipe, after all that amazing videos, we as a viewers falled in Lowe I that exquisite time piece. That was beautiful time. Thank you!

I do agree with you but alot of watch guys will always view Tudor in that way. Sad but true
Poor people are definitely not buying Tudors.
@@lonewolfemcquade8133watch guys like that are the reason I don't want/buy a Rolex and got a Tudor instead.
It's all relative, isn't it? Like saying a Maserati is a poor man's Ferrari (That poor man only makes 400K a year, btw).

@@VoltsFPV hahaha that’s freaking funny….

Speedies, with their non-ceramic bezels and mostly brushed surfaces will always be amongst the most attractive chronographs to an old schooler like me
As someone who's had a little time in the hobby I have to say I used to really appreciate an exhibition case back but today I think if it comes at a cost of making the watch thicker I'd prefer not to have one. If a watch manufacturer gave me the option to have a solid case back instead and take ~1mm off the thickness of the case I think I'd do that almost every time.
They are neat but 99% of the time the exhibition case is hidden.
I agree!!
Ben Clymer said that the LeMans Daytona with its exhibition caseback is almost exactly the same thickness as the previous model with the solid caseback though.
I gave all commenters a 👍 so …I really like seeing the movement :-)
I was thinking the same thing, homage islander watches = a poor man's Seiko by his reasoning. 😂
A lot of Islanders are rich man Seikos if we're being honest. Good bracelets AND sapphire? Damn.
Did you challenge him to a duel? Tennis clubs at dawn?
Perhaps "a sane man's Rolex" would be the better label.
Yes I know they're boring and everyone has them but the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Speedmaster have always been and will always be my two favorite watches.
They will forever be #pureclass no matter what we or anyone says, keep enjoying them!

I agree they are excellent but they don't fit my style or personality. I'm very pleased you like them, though, that's the only thing that matters.
Sure, it's not the "Professional" version, but it has its perks that really speak to me:
I agree whole heartedly. It is one of the characteristics I love about the BB58.
I've been into watches for 20+ years and the BB58 is the only watch to make my heart skip a beat when seeing it in person for the first time. I've been wowed by other watches, of course, but never like that.
I have never grown tired of the Willard. Still my first choice over the past 5 years.
I have recently got one. Want an absolute beast of a watch. Really has a vine of: give me your best shot.
Same here. The ergonomics of that watch on the wrist are incredible.

If Tudor is the poor man's Rolex, Islander is the poor man's Seiko
I can see the comparison, except quite often, the specs on the Islanders are better than the Seikos.
Isn’t that Orient?
Hans Wilsdorf Foundation owns Tudor and Rolex (their profits head to the same parent company), Tudor is manufactured to be more affordable, with Rolex about 2-3x price of equivalent Tudor. A bit like the brand positioning of Audi>VW>Seat>Skoda (brands in same group). I'm with the commenter above, Orient is more appropriate to be described as the poor man's Seiko.
Islander is the watch Seiko " Should Have Made "
DataKitsune, Rolex doesn't own Tudor. They're both owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Very big distinction.
I really wish they’d bring back the Tudor North Flag and the Date-Day 😔
If they bring back the Date-Day Prince in its original 36mm size it would be like they had a license to print money.

If Mark wanted to aggravate people with that comment. He definitely succeeded. Of course your going to disagree. You own one

I 1000% agree about the pelagos!! Square indices with the snowflake hands work soooo much better imo.
I 120% agree. Lowermatic 80 is a fraud. I’d buy a G-Shock for those money and feel better.
24:33 and that’s why I went for the Quartz version, case, int’ bracelet and clasp etc...
Please stop just blindly following what people on Internet tell you. So what they use some plastic parts, there is no evidence out there showing it being less durable and breaking down. Regulate easily? People regulating watches at home is niche within niche, I don't believe that is deciding factor for anyone really
@@kamil151 no matter what people on internet say, I’m not going to spend my money on a Lowermatic 80.

Or get out,
cuz sometimes you just gotta sell em…
Thanks for another awesome collab with Marc, T. Can't wait to finish watching it later! Hope you're well 🥂
Hello Alex, I am well think you, if a little stressed form work.
Always great to see you in the comments, how are you doing?
Best as always 😎🥂

I'm well thank you. Just got back from a weekend trip to NYC. Unfortunately due to the Easter holiday, the watch stores were mostly closed. Still had a great time though. Now back at work for the week and pretty busy at that.

Black Bay and Speedmaster; two of my favorite watches 😭
Both awesome classics!
Listening to these guys, has made me love the watches that they don't!
OG BB58 is a great watch.
I get that it's an icon but it's just not for me
I agree with Mark on the Speedmaster. I used to want one but gotten completely sick of it. Omega has played it out
Hi guys, great video, just two mates shooting the shit about watches- question?

@@thomasc1753 By the same token, all divers look the same.
@@thomasc1753 BB and BB58 has in in house COSC movement, but keep talking.
Omega's Seamaster 300 Heritage is never talked about and it should be.
Agreed. Sold the speedmaster and having much more fun wearing the gshocks
Thanks for the mention guys! Loved Marc's take on Tudor 😂 unapologetically blunt. Good on him!
Each to their own but he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about
He knew he was going urk some people with that comment. At least he's honest
Love these collaboration videos! Very entertaining! Cheers guys ❤
ALL Swatch brands. NO MORE POWERMATIC 80’s…..Yuck….Great vid guys. Thanks!
Omega Speedy is #1 overrated followed by all non-vintage Rolxes. The Tudor Black Bay with fixed bezel is pure class though.
Doesn't like the Speedmaster, likes the snoopy, wears two islander watches with a hoodie. Okay...
superb video guys!!!
Marc is a spitting image of Grand Master Oogway. There I said it.
There are no accidents...
I like the exhibition case backs simply to see the quality that I’m buying and secondly to appreciate the intricacy of the engineering.
My preferred watches from my little collection are:
JaegerLeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1968 as it is a beautiful dive watch with an alarm which I used for wake up for about two years whilst working offshore.
I'll get one for sure.

not a reliable brand, if you want something that can last for years, choose some other brands like Longines, Tudor or Omega etc.

Absolutely 💯 spot on
But there are many watches that could be similarly criticised.

Contradictions abound here 😂
Indeed. P.s.

@@theurbangentry Absolutely! The more we learn, the more we realise how little we know. Cheers 🍻
