A Brutally Honest Review of Palia

  • Palia gameplay review! I reviewed the current state of Palia in beta to see if it's actually worth it.
Palia is an MMO life simulation game with a cosy vibe. In my review of Palia, I discuss whether or not the game is worth it.
As the game is developing, I may offer another review in a few months if the game changes substantially. I hope it does! As just to confirm, I really enjoy the game as it is now. Not the best open world cosy life sim I've ever played, but I think it has a lot of potential!
What do you think of Palia? Is it worth getting?

I have been playing it for a week and initially I was quite happy with the pace of the game and progress. It was very welcoming for newcomers. But ever since they lowered the amount of spawns it gets more difficult to progress. It's due to not enough areas and more rewarding resources for advanced players.

Reading their subreddit, apparently Palia isn't made by an indie dev team. It's full of ex-World of Warcraft and ex-Riot game devs. The dev team also crowdfunded tens of millions of dollars along with millions more in investor funds. So it doesn't make a lot of sense why the game is so lackluster after years of development. It really feels like a cashgrab at the moment.

In addition to the premium items being overpriced, the bundles are advertising a fake discount. They have a slashed out price and claim the bundles price is “33% off” but that “sale price” is no different than if you purchased each item individually. It’s 33% off of a price that you couldn’t pay even if you tried.
If you read the fine print on a premium items page it explains that after you purchase one item in a set, the remaining items cost half as much. The slashed out price for the bundle is the cost of all items at full cost.
It’s super confusing and they’re clearly doing it to confuse players, and it’s quite frankly illegal in many countries.

Never thought I'd see my favorite sims critic do Palia. I was looking so forward to this game, but it's honestly just a less in-depth 3D Stardew Valley. There's no MMO features, you can't even local chat. There's no interaction with furniture (you can't sit, sleep, etc.), and although I was led to believe it would be very multiplayer immersive, the sharding system of the servers means roleplaying is never going to happen.
There's just not enough in the game for it to have been in development this long. It's clear they're trying to push it to Switch as fast as humanly possible, probably to appease investors, but I think it's just not going to work out well. It's a shame because of the potential - there's just not enough and it makes me wonder what the hell the team has been doing this whole time.

My main gripe with this game currently is that rare resources (flow tree's and palium ore) that are needed for all late game crafts (especially for top tier furniture you need a ton) are almost non existent and you need to spend hours upon hours running around all over the place hunting these down and hoping people in chat will say if they spotted one so you can share the spawn, unfortunately a lot of people will just farm these out without telling anyone and as a result they are very scarce to get and it makes the late progression halt to a stand still. They are also nerfing a lot of spawns of more common materials people use to make gold from and you need a ton of gold in this game as recopies for new stuff are expensive. Such drastic nerfs even before the game is officially launched has me concerned for its future honestly.

    • @infradig696
      @infradig696 Рік тому

Yeah and what doesn't help, is people are already using addons that tell them where all the ore is. So if you don't use those addons, you're way behind, but the addons feel like cheating to me, so I don't use them.

What sucks is that I keep being added onto servers where people don't speak in the chat.
So what happens is I'll find Palium, try to tell people about it, but no one responds and I have to mine it myself.
What's even worse are the people who just don't say they're coming. I wait for a couple minutes with no response, then mine the node, just for someone to come immediately after even though they never said to wait.
I know where the nodes spawn (not where they're currently spawned, but the location in general), and I do try to include others, but no one ever seems interested in playing together.

Of course flow trees will be rare if you don't bother cutting down NORMAL trees, since the re-spawn seems to be random so there's no guarantee another flow tree will spawn where the last one stood. Same with Palium ore. Just go cutting down normal trees and just go and remove the stone or iron ore nodes at the Palium locations. I helped cut down six or seven flow trees yesterday, within three hours of playing. Palium ore, I took home about 50 or so, within the same 3 hours of playing. And I wasn't even trying.

The thing with palia is a lack of purpouse. Like sure you can level mining but... why? what do you get out of it? You could do quests and decorate your house and such without needing to level anything to a large degree. Infact just farming and doing quests is enough for you to eventualy get the money to buy any furnature you want and for npc quests you just need to give them things once a day and do there quests that don't require levels in anything. They should add things like mabey titles for reaching level 10 in skills, mabey a unique peice of clothing or something. Right now there is... almost nothing. No late game no point in progression no nothing which means the motivation can only come from yourself not what the game offers.
As it is I can't help but compare it to corralislands early acess. Corral island costs like 15 bucks, there is no monetisation, there is already a ton of content with more coming out frequently, a clear roadmap, minimal bugs as they only release more content after lots of playtesting. As it is the next update is going to have a new festival, a ton of qol stuff, a new location, new npcs, new outfits for all the characters, a new furnature set and so much more. I suppose with what they have done, it makes palia look really underwhelming. Thats not to say palia dosen't have a ton of potential, its just not beta ready.
Edit: I made a bad explanation with the levelling. My overall point stands though that there is just not much. Make no mistake I really really want it to do well. I want it to thrive. I was there day 1 closed beta and played in alpha. More than anything I hope it thrives. I played a week before most folk thus me feeling burnt out already.

I have the same feeling. I haven't played coral island, but I've played other games' open and closed betas before. Compared to those, Palia seems barely out of alpha.
It's really odd that that they've chosen to have an unending beta this early in the game's development. Core game mechanics aren't even ironed out yet. Not only that, but there is an expensive cash shop in a game barely out of alpha. They expect you to pay money when taking part in their game development. It's really odd.
It's a really bad business move. Of course people aren't going to be happy with such an unfinished game. Usually, companies would have interested people play in a beta and then end that beta shortly after to work on the issues brought up. But they didn't continue doing this as they should have. Unending beta gives people the vibe of early access, but it's nowhere near as complete, which is just going to wreck their customers' opinions of the game.
I'm just really questioning their business model here.

As you said the PRICING of the cash shop is a huge red flag. It isn't that it is cosmetic only that is a good thing, it is that a basic outfit set costs 30$.. They are following the whale model of pricing instead of the walmart model. As such I see them having serious money issues as time goes forward because those games that follow the whale model are basically cash grabs and die out fairly quickly.
Other then that, I liked your review. More need to be critical of what the game is today, not forgiving of saying ooh it's early release, early beta, excuse excuse excuse. No Just say what it is today, as they improve so will the reviews. Based on merit I say. As to playing for free it is worth taking a look at and see if it is your jam. YES a few bugs, YES a few annoyances, but for free worth it. For 1 cash shop item price, I would say no. Sorry they need to fix that before I spend my money on that stuff. Which is a shame, since I would like to support the game, but that pricing model is stupid and I refuse to support such poor decisions.

NO, they are NOT following the Whale model of pricing. Whales will spend upwards of $100,000 US dollars a year. WHALES are WHALES. NO way a WHALE can spend that much. period. Whales spending is a fact. Whales cannot exist even if they buy all of the outfits at this point. It is the fault of Septum 6 that they don't have a catalogue as big as JC Penneys or the historical Sears catalog for true WHALES to buy from. They would make a killing at 25 cents per single article of clothing. If I could develop an MMO, that would be my businsee model.

There are a few major issues with this game. The first of which is the predatory way the premium shop was introduced and is shoved in your face in game as well. It is extremely over priced. The whole having to purchase coin packs to purchase premium items is a lousy way to offer paid for features. There are no game play features to purchase BUT all of the most wanted features of every game - pets and outfits ARE pay for only. If they were to offer fancier versions in the shop that is fine but there is no way to earn anything in game. It not only divides your player base but gives major vibes of not being all inclusive. Nothing COZY about that folks. The fact that their very first update for the game was mostly about the premium shop is a very bad sign. The BIGGEST red flag for me is the fact that the game is not even close to a release and they already added a premium shop in the first place. So, you want us to dump all kinds of money into a game that might not ever be finished or released??!!!! Another major issue is the fact that there is nothing to do. You can grind, grind, grind for resources but what's the point? Other than upgrading your house and making yourself furniture there are only a very small amount of quests that can be quickly finished - other than the super annoying shep one - what else is there to do? The secondary area BB is like a ghost town with only 3 npc's and absolutely nothing else. You need to go there for the resources to upgrade tools but that's it. Other than needing others to chop down flow trees there are no other multiplayer aspects. There are no seasons, events or optional game play involving others. In the 3 years that this game has been developed so far this is all they have to offer us? It does not make me feel good about the future of this game.

What a lot of people seem to purposely miss the point about is criticisms regarding the cash shop. Absolutely NOBODY is saying this game shouldn't make any money for being free. What folks ARE saying is that it makes no sense for cosmetics to be fully a premium thing with no way for F2P players to earn basic versions of those items in-game. Maybe to some it doesn't affect gameplay, but what people aren't thinking about is how F2P players put in just as much time as paying players, possibly even more. The little cats were sent as a thank-you for the support but they only meant MONETARY support which is a huge slap in the face to people who still support the game by logging in and playing every day. Hoping they get it together before the Switch release because they're fumbling really bad as of right now.

    • @morrisnakes
      @morrisnakes 11 місяців тому +1

I get that perspective, but when they allow people to buy things with cash that others have to farm for it's seen as "pay to win" and would probably upset people just as much, if not more. I think a nice way to make people on both sides happy would be to make some clothing items that are exclusively earned with some kind of login bonus currency or achievements so that free players don't feel so left out, but it isn't going towards the pay to win model.

    • @lordhelmit1499

I'm confused by this. What do you mean "earn basic versions of those items"? Of the outfits? What would that look like? There are a number of outfits and combos available for F2P players. So I'm confused by you saying you have no problem with them making money, but the F2P players should get the same items as the ppl who decided to pay? What would be the benefit of spending $$$ at that point? There needs to be some benefit, and overall I feel like different clothes and a pet are pretty chill

Since Palia is not monetarizing convenient items, I wonder why they introduce so much inconvenience in the game from tedious travel to lack of mini map to long item processing time. Thus eating your money. In this game, they just added $39.00 pets feature... hmmm. Which I might have been willing put money down for to help support the game, but not in beta form. i don't doubt that palia could be way better in the future but as it is now here's my experience with the game: it just takes too much time. the lack of a minimap makes it hard to know where you're going, especially when the quests constantly send you running back and forth across the map, and the animations for basically anything start to feel tediously long pretty quickly. i also ended up getting softlocked twice and had to manually crash my game with alt+f4 to get out. so as of right now there's probably a long list of qol changes that could be made and my biggest recommendation is just to wait until they get addressed

As long as you shoot near the animal or hit the node/tree before its killed/breaks you should also get a loot drop from it of your own, at least that's been my experience. I feel the same about the cash shop...its way to over priced $10 for a cosmetic outfit is more then reasonable. I also agree I'd love to see something like a random event every few hours...like say a Giant Flow Tree that you need at least 10 people to chop down or else flow trees stop generating as its sucking up the magic with say 10-20 flow log drop & maybe a mini Flow Tree you can use as a decoration, or a giant bear that needs to be hunted (with our bows) and other animals won't spawn until its killed & as long as you participate you get a "Taxidermed/stuffed Bear" trophy the first time & say a random amount of a rare herb/plant & small amount of gold from the mayor for getting rid of the problem and saving his beloved Chappas. :)

Edited: BTW, you can use your middle mouse button on a villager or location to "mark/highlight" which quest you wish to get to and it shows that with a white circle on your compass on top. Also the majority of resources can be shared... you hit it once and get the full loot =)

I think that Singularity 6 (the makers of Palia) only made this game an MMO to make money. As you pointed out it is quite obviously a single player game, just with a lot of different people all playing their single player game together. I followed the game for a year and was super excited to get into the closed beta. I played it non-stop for a week, and then dropped it. Every single aspect of the game is designed as a money-grind, from expanding your house, getting recipes, seeds, basically everything. It's really quite stressful, and after a while, quite boring. It is not what I am looking for from a "cozy" game. I'd understand this if the devs were communicating with the players on their concerns, but they are actually doing the opposite; they aren't interacting with players on their discord, and every time someone comes up with a way to make some money, the devs instantly nerf it. I suppose that is to be expected. Singularity 6 style themselves as a small company when actually they are a corporate gaming group with over 100 employees and more than $25 million behind them. If the devs don't get with it and address the problems the players are citing, I'm afraid that most people trying this free game will eventually stop playing.

I never build in any game i just find it tedious. But in Palia I actually really enjoyed decorating my house and unlocking / building all the different items.

SatchOnSims - We were interested in this game until we saw how devs behaved on reddit, arbitrarily locking discussion threads, deleting posts. Not to even mention Discord. A lot of players also came across as irrational or even borderline hysterical about any common-sense discussion about the game.
Not like we even had a stake in any of it. We were just genuinely interested in details about the game.
Browsing all the feedback, including all the pros and cons. Share the good. Share the bad.
If devs expect us to invest time and/or money in their game, we want to know what we're getting.
The atmosphere was just very...cultish. Do not ask questions, praise everything, do what you're told to do, and 'keep sweet.'
You - shall - be 'cozy.' Or else.
    Really offputting.
And strangely self-sabotaging behavior by devs because many of the concerns people were bringing up were valid, the tone of most were polite or matter-of-fact, not overly aggressive or hostile, and most of the suggestions were both relevant and useful (and would have actively improved the game) - but they were just getting shut down immediately, it was bizarre.
The more we observed the game culture connected to the game, the less we wanted anything to do with it.
Which is a shame, because in some ways the game had potential.
There is 100% a player base interested in 'lifeskilling' (farming, gathering, fishing, etc.) without the pvp/raiding elements of other MMO games.
And there is a kernel of a decent game here.
There's always some element of grinding involved in MMOs like this. It does get repetitive. The gathering and production mechanics in the game might be new for 'Sims 4' players, but for players used to similar MMOs, they've seen this all before.
Yet, on paper, this game is very appealing. A game with all the opportunities for building and lifeskilling, but without the hassle of pvp/raiding, is something that - would - attract a lot of players.
Fair to say the 'cash-grabby' strategies are present. But a lot of mobile games are like this. Not that that excuses anything at all (it's ridiculous) but is just the current state of affairs.
Many players have accepted pervasive monetization and psychologically manipulative tactics in 'free to play' games, so devs continue to fold these into games - why would they stop, they have no incentive to do so as long as players keep spending. That's the goal.
Actually - no idea why this isn't a mobile game. This basically - is - a mobile game rather than a PC game.
Unless they're angling for attracting part of the 'Sims 4' player base (or player base for games like 'Coral Island,' 'Stardew Valley,' etc.) - can see there'd definitely be crossover there.
We did receive access to closed beta and were quite willing to check out the game, as it looked possibly cute and chill.
But the cultish atmosphere connected to this game gave us the creeps.
    So - 'noped' out.
    Fair review, though.
And, of course, if someone wants to play this game or would enjoy continuing to play this game, they're perfectly free to do so.

Especially in the beginning i came across so many features i didnt know where annoying in other games but super easy to work with in palia. First of, the fact that every player, besides tool quality, can play eaqually together. Im playing it with a friend and we totally enjoyed going on farming tours in the world, or stant next to each other and fish while just talking about our day. Small things like the quick change of tools even while running or how naturally making progress feels like made me very happy. I like how many fish and bugs are there to collect already, and that you have to try a bit harder to find rare specamins. The characters? were so in love! The animations are super cute and they are designed and told with love. Also, there are no long loading times, besides when other players are in the queue for travelling. Yes, going across the map is a bit frustrating, if we get cute mounts im so hyped! also cant wait to own farm animals. And events are in the making!

I agree with most of what you said, except the feeling I'm playing a solo game. I'm constantly surrounded by other online players. Feels very MMO to me.

Here for the official release now, I don’t feel like most of these suggestions have been addressed.

If I gotta play as a human, I already don't like it. Humans aren't that great or fun. LMFAO One of the reasons Animal Crossing just doesn't do it for me. The idea of humans being a rare species is just a boring concept.

Does everything get wiped after the beta is over? or do we keep everything?

There are two Guild Wars 2 features I hope Palia copies:
The first one is instanced gathering nodes. Which means that the node doesn't disappear after you finished harvesting from it, and another player can start gathering immediately after you. Home instances are, of course, different, because of the need to clear space for building.
The second one is selling expansions for money. People are, generally, more willing to pay for an expansion, with new zones, resources, quests and game mechanics, than for cosmetic items. The problem is, with the current cash shop items as overpriced as they are, will Palia even survive long enough until its first expansion release?
I really enjoyed playing Palia with a friend. Grouping up to gather or hunt together, and getting all the loot in half the time is amazing! But the loading screen you need to sit through when you invite them to your server is a bit long. Not a problem at all with one friend, but imagine having 5 or 6 friends on different servers and having to sit through 5 or 6 loading screens...

I saw another review on this game and I gave it a try...I've been playing online games for 20 years..I have played a lot of games over those years...I am addicted to this game and I never played farmville back in the day or stardew valley...I'm really enjoying this game though..

My biggest issue is that it’s an MMORPG(Lite) but the co-op elements are very lacking, ughh back to FFXIV

Palia is only in version 0.166 so they are adding a lot more still. It's a bit early for such an in depth review. That being said, this IS an accurate representation of the current state of the game

MMO's are special for different reasons. Like, I enjoy RP so that makes a MMO hit or mis for me. Others like raiding and wont play games that dont have raids or dungeons. So yeah, difficult to get a MMO everyone likes.

the fact that you even cant zoom in or out in the game says enough...i get motion sickness of it sadly. Don't have it with other games. Unless its very zoomed in and moving fast. Good review, agree with all of this. I quit the game, in the end i feel lonely af in the game and stressed cuz of the farm tension, sad gamer heart.

It reminds me of World of Warcraft in a way, If we could pull the best bits and pieces of all the games we love and put them together without glitching how wonderful would that be.

My issues are: the climbing mechanic is clunky, there isn't enough diversity of huntable wildlife, hunting feels like shooting fish in a barrel.

I have about 150 hours in. The guts of the game are cute and fun, but holy cow it needs some more content. As of now it's just a kill deer, chop, mine, grind fest. Literally that is all there is to do in the game. I hope they don't reset, and i hope they make more content ASAP. Great review!

I know this really isn't a trait of games like these but I'd love to be able to just 'bestie' a character rather than romance them lol
It would be nice if you could do the things you would to romance a character and not have them be your lover but idk how this game works yet so who knows :')

My main concern is nothing in the game feels deep or fleshed out. The whole game resides on the surface, what i mean is farming is basic, cooking is basic, nothing has any real depth. If they would have made farming like stardew valley that would have been a real win. Shoot even cooking would have felt better with the Stardew treatment. I wont talk about the recent patch or the results of its implementation but i will say. For me it highlighted the lack of understanding of the player base. Wait now that I think about it the reason things in your plot feel basic is because of how the game it built. Its not actually an isolated plot so you cant farm without buying soil. Its all just interactive furniture if you will. hmm
