      HI Ingrid 🤩💐 thank you for your feedback! I am in the process of cleaning the leca, which I am doing on a day by day basis, because... this job is tedious 😅 for catasetinae... wow! But, I am glad that I can grow in inorganic media, because I do not do this every year, and sphagnum moss would be too expensive to repot with every year. So, doing this every 4 years, that is fine by me 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Ingrid!! I wish you a beautiful day 🌸

      HI Stephen 🤗💐 LOVED the root system and let me tell you... I hated having to destroy it! Still, after 4 years, it is time, and well, I promised some bulbs, so, this was as good a time as any 👍🏼 growing root tips, and that fragrance that came out of the pot! Fresh cut grass... so much spring in the air from that fragrance. Next up... After Dark Black Pearl, also needs to get a bigger pot and maybe I will divide it. Just hope that Jack doesn't wake up with a massive hangover 🤞🏼thank you so much for watching, Stephen! 🌸

    Good to know you leave the roots on too. I grow catasetum (and types) for only a year now and had good success so far. I thought I am going to leave the roots on and see what happens, same reason, they are so beautiful and still alive. I just cannot cut them off! :D and because off this video, I know I don’t have too! My simple thinking is that in nature is nobody who cuts the roots, right?… thanks 🙏

      Hi there 🤩💐 thank you so much for watching 🤗 I had to take this one apart, I had promised a division a while ago when it was in bloom. But, yeah... I leave it to the last minute, the longest time in the pot... this is so not a yearly thing for me, and I am glad that I don't have it in inorganic media, because then, I could not be so generous with how long it can stay in a pot. There is nobody cutting roots in nature, no... we humans think that we can change the rule book and that just doesn't apply ALL the time. 😬🌸

To have to do it, destroy a beautiful root system that had the fragrance of freshly cut grass, to the pot... etc etc. Thank goodness for inorganic media, I don't have to do this every year! In this set up, well.... we had the discussion before, are they really dormant? Look at the growing root tips!! 😬 such a shame, but... after 4 years, a reset is not such a bad idea, the pot was very crowded as you could see! Now, I hope it doesn't wake up with a major hangover 😢 the leca cleaning has begun and well... I am only doing so much every day because I don't want to rush the job, get fed up and not be diligent.... as well as not get a raw thumb from the scrubby pad! 🤪 it will be the best feeling though, when that little batch goes into the storage container! 😅 thank you so much for watching, amiga! "we're going to potting this up in leca and self watering again"
    and here I thought you were going to go with PET. Speaking of, whatever happened to those two plants you put in the PET late last year.
    Not surprising that the pot cracked, it is plastic that has been outside for four years. Mine, even though they are supposed to be "UV treated" can become brittle in as little as two. One of them cracked in the shuffle over the weekend but the plant needs to be divided and repotted anyway so no big loss there. Probably going to put it in a basket because it is a bit of a vigorous grower so it can eat the basket.
    I feel like there was something else I was going to bring up that was on my mind earlier but I can't remember what it was. Oh well, maybe it will come back tomorrow.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +2

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 nope... the PET is just a thing for the struggling cygnoches.. IF it comes out of dormancy, ever... I do not know! The current status quo is... same as months ago when I potted them up! I don't know if they are in shock, some bulbs are big enough to grow a new growth, but who knows what is going on inside their system. The jury is still out if any of the bulbs will grow any new growths 🤷🏼‍♀️ catesetinae and complacency do not go hand in hand, which is the subject of a future video! WHEN / IF this one will be ok to start growing again 🤷🏼‍♀️ I am happy that the pots have lasted for so long and if I can get the orchid out without having to be so drastic, then, they pots are still good to go. The rims on some are becoming brittle, just like the piece that snapped off on this one. I can feel it when I get them out of the mask to flush! I can get pots to fit the mask 2 sizes up, but not for this size mask. I hope to find something to replace those pots that I break, because I don't want to waste the masks 😢 I saw your other comment, but do not remember what it was that you remembered... so, see you again shortly 😘🤗

    Hello Nina! Aren’t they just amazing 🤩 I only have two catasetanae that I purchased in the fall 2021… they are waking up now. One has two new growths and the other one tiny new growth. I find it very counter intuitive to not water when I see green stuff! 😂 I have potted them when dormant in self watering set up using leca and a smaller grade clay medium called florite (it is intended for aquarium) . I am looking forward to see what happens when I water…. Hopefully I don’t rot them! Thanks Nina for sharing! Have a great week 💕🌸💕

Just as well that I can hold on before sending it. The Black Pearl, is also still fast asleep. I have to divide that one as well, but unless I see something of different interest, I won't be filming it, because the carnage will be the same as in this video. 🙄😬 is it fun to see them wake up... now... patience 💆🏼‍♀️👍🏼👍🏼 thank YOU so much for watching, Chantal!! A big sacrifice for your followers.
    Thanks for all you are doing for us.
    When you will start watering?
    I have one and we are in winter but most of the leaves are still green.
    I have almost stopped watering but I have a new growth.
    I don't want to kill the catasetum and should I water and fertilize normally or not?
    Thanks for all.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +2

      HI Daniel 🤩💐 you are very welcome and I appreciate your comment very very much, Daniel, thank YOU! When the roots are halfway down in the pot, and the new growth is double the height of the first bulb it grows out of. IF the back bulbs start shrivelling while a new growth starts, then it is a question of monitoring how they are being consumed and possible a flush needs to happen so that the energy is not being taken away from the back bulbs too much! Time will tell, but I will definitely keep an eye on what it does from here on in and film it step by step! Do not stop watering your catasetum! If an orchid is in active growth and it wants to grow, then follow procedure as normal. I would highly recommend to never force an orchid to do what you want it to do... if it is growing, leaves are still green, then keep fertilizing, keep watering. Eventually, the orchid will respond and go dormant, OR ... in some conditions, catasetinae may never go dormant because of the environment they are in. ie Hawaii... catasetinae do not go dormant there and they will still bloom. So... follow what your orchid does and not what other orchid do on YT! 👍🏼 Your environment may make them grow like that and it is something to be happy about ... it is easier 😉 thank you for your kind comment, once again, Daniel and for watching 🌸

    Hi Nina, what is the normal development of catasetums from seeds to seedlings to mature flowering plant ? Why is it that some large healthy bulbs don’t produce flowering spikes ? I have 2 catasetums that are not yellowing yet, should I keep watering them and let them do their own thing ? Thanks Nina.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +2

      Andre! HI! 🤩💐 good to see you again! A seedling catasetum can take up to 4 years to bloom, depending on the cross, but species will definitely take at least 4 years. As per usual, light... as with many orchids, if they do not get enough light, they will not bloom, but be in a perpetual cycle of growth. If your catasetums are not yellowing, then... keep watering, but, if the bulbs look mature and you have your terminal leaf on the latest bulb, you can start reducing the amount of light they get from what you have not and reduce by 2 hours. However, if your catasetinae are in active growth, then keep those growths going. Especially if they are seedlings. The focus should be on growing bulbs, and then dial in the blooming phase. Some catasetinae do not go dormant to actually bloom, so keep that in mind as well. It is the same with some dendrobiums, they do not need a winter rest or temperature drop to bloom. In some growing conditions, catasetinae will never go dormant, and should not be forced to do so. Some of the commercial hybrids will just grow and bloom, making it easier for the market to grow this genus. So... look at your catasetinae, see if they have a terminal leaf on their bulb, check the size of the bulb to the previous one, and if it matches in size or is bigger, consider testing the light levels to see if that will make them start dropping leaves... look for these signs on your bulbs to know if you can / should start reducing the water ua-cam.com/video/r2ITmbBGG48/v-deo.html i hope that this is the right video.. I think I picked the right one. For any other videos on catasetinae, I have a playlist for them. Only watch the most recent videos, as the oldest ones do not touch on these details. Let me know if this was of any help and if you can reference anything I have said with your catasetinae ! Thank you so much for watching, Andre!! Hope your day is off to a great start 👍🏼🌸

    Hi Nina, terrific video and subject. I guest rroot bound just doesn't say it!😮. This is my first dormant season with my catasetinae's. The bulbs grew nicely, their still in the nursery pots in very compacted moss. The nursery says not to repot till they come out of dormancy. I don't see how new roots can grow in compacted moss. Their going to get last watering in a week. The leaves are yellowing nicely. I've been widening intervals between watering preparing them for dry period. I'm not sure what to do, put them in fresh moss (that's what is used in my neck of the woods) or just leave them alone. Any thoughts? Thank you for the tips in this video. You are The Orchid Master.

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hi!! These orchids are just a joy to grow because of their insane root system!! I LOVE them! I hate repotting them though because of how paper thin the velamen is and it is a nightmare to get off of the leca. That usually takes me several days to get done in small increments. Orchid roots can grow into the smallest nook and cranny. They grow their way into tight and compact spaces without any issues, but, seeing as your's is still in it's original pot, the dormant period is a great time to tackle a repot, because, when your catastinae wake up, they won't be any wiser. So, yes, some prefer to repot when the orchid comes out of dormancy and others (me) prefer to do it when they are in full dormancy before they wake up! (think gardening, some people like to do their garden clean up while the landscape is asleep and everything is ready to grow in spring, and others wait for spring to arrive before cleaning up. I used to do all my garden clean up late fall and throughout winter) So, here is the thing, and depending on what you prefer with the option I am going to provide, compared to what the nursery recommended. When catasetinae come out of dormancy, that means a new growth has started and as they new growth starts, new roots come out pretty much at the same time. New growths are delicate, easy to break off, and if we succeed in not popping of the new growth, the risk of abrasions to the new root tips, is high. So, my argument is, I don't need to fuss with something that could make me be clumsy and make a mistake, so, in order to avoid that mistake, I don't wait for a new growth. IF I can get to repotting any catasetinae before any new growth starts, then I am going to do that. It really makes no difference when the orchid is asleep, in the case of catasetinae. This does not apply to other orchids that should not be messed with while sleeping... well, there are other exceptions, but we will stick with catasetinae 😅 Whenever you decide to repot, during full dormancy or when your's wake up, please wait until the leaves are all yellow, or just the top 2 leaves are yellow. Some catasetinae hybrids have a quick turn around from going into dormancy and waking up again, so if in doubt, don't worry if the top 2 leaves are still yellow, and go for it. Also, do not cut off all the roots. It is much better to keep enough of the old root system attached to help anchor the bulbs back into the pot with tightly packed moss around them. Make a nice package around the roots with moss, and 'shove' the whole thing into a pot, stake if necessary. Many growers will chop the whole root system off, then they have a wobbly orchid with nothing to hold the bulbs in place apart from a wobbly stake and tie. In my case, I had to cut the whole root system off, you saw why, but if I were growing in moss, I would take 50% of the old root system off and leave the rest to help me secure the orchid in the pot. Sometimes, catasetinae roots that go back into the pot will still manage to reactivate when watered again. I know that this is a novel, but I wanted to give you all the options, why I recommend what I am recommending and how it can benefit you and your catasetinae. IF you are in doubt, you can always send me an email with pics. Just in case you want to have a visual confirmation on the status of your catasetinae and when would be the best time to repot. Thank you so much for watching this video, and thank you for taking the time to read my novella 🫣🤭 hope you had a fabulous Friday 🌸🥷🏼🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Andrea, hi 🥰💐 I am truly a bully!! And... the worst bully because the root system was actively growing... that is why I do not do this every year like some growers do. But, growing in inorganic media, I do not have to do this every year 👍🏼 no way can a catasetinae grown in sphagnum moss be in it's pot for 4 years, sooo... every 4 years being a bully! I hope that it was FAST asleep and won't wake up with a hangover 🤞🏼😬 thank you so very much for your kind comment, Andrea! Also for watching, thank you! Wishing you a cozy rest of the evening and a great Thursday 🌸

      Hi Cristy 😍💐 oh, I can understand why you would be afraid of them! They are only tricky once / year if grown in a wet dry cycle, but if grown in the self watering set up, they are really easy and so so much fun to watch grow. At least there is an orchid that we can watch growing during the course of 8 months, whereas others are slow with maturing their growths 😅 I love this genus because you can hardly over fertilize them. But, they are expensive, that is for sure. So, if you ever decide to get one, and have any questions, do not hesitate to ask 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching this video, I truly appreciate your time and support! Have a wonderful Tuesday 🫶🏼❤️🌸
