Nowadays nobody would give a chance to an unknown guy who came up with script about one poor fighter from Philly, claiming he wants to play the lead role in the movie.
Back then producer took mortgage on his house to get money for the first Rocky. Who would do that now? Nobody.

Stallone recently released a new cut of the movie, removing the robot and the silliest elements (and diminishing the role of his ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen 😄). The film is 2 minutes longer and in a new picture ratio (2.35 instead of 1.85). Rocky IV: Rocky vs Drago - The Ultimate Director's Cut.

Ivan Drago is and has always been my favorite opponent for Rocky, over thirty five years and counting. I very much appreciated and do appreciate his no nonsense stoicism. He's a warrior that does (most of) his talking in the ring. This compared to Apollo Creed who was always a showman and Clubber Lang who in my mind is an obnoxious loudmouth. I like Apollo Creed but he's all about the show. Drago doesn't play.

    "I must break you."
One of the biggest complaints I hear about this movie, is that Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is out of character. I disagree. Apollo has always been an extremely pro-American competitor and challenging a Soviet boxer would be a matter of pride for him. So of course he would challenge Ivan Drago.
There are a lot of problems with this movie, and the next one is worse, but Apollo Creed's character isn't one of them. Carl Weathers gives 110% too.
Fun Fact: The number plate of the black sports car that Rocky drives is: "Sothpaw"
Method Actor Fact: In order to sell Drago's (Dolph Lundgren) killing blow to Apollo, Carl Weathers made it a point to land face first and feign a twitching motion after hitting the ground. He was so convincing that the on-set physician feared he had actually been injured.
Location Location Fact: The training scenes set in Russia were actually filmed in Wyoming. The farm is located in Jackson Hole, and most of the exterior shots were filmed in the Grand Teton National Park. The fight itself was shot at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Rock Solid Fact: After realizing how Rocky's previous opponents (Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Clubber Lang (Mr. T)) had loud and animated personalities, Dolph Lundgren came up with the idea of making his character, Ivan Drago, very stoic, not move too much and just be an intimidating presence. Sylvester Stallone incorporated these ideas by not giving the character too much dialogue and making big close ups, especially in the eyes. This wasn't done because English wasn't Dolph Lundgren's first language.

Just seeing that one teaser trailer on TV that gave nothing away increased the hype exponentially. Dolph Lundgren who is playing Ivan Drago is an actual black belt in Kyokushin (knockout karate) and Sylvester Stallone asked him to punch him for real to make it look good.
Stallone ended up badly hurt and had to fly to the hospital where he spent nine days.
"Feeling OK after the day of shooting, Stallone says that evening he knew something was wrong. Looking back at the footage, Stallone says the punch that did all the damage was an uppercut, which “caught the ribs and hit the heart against the ribcage.” The doctors told the actor that type of injury usually occurred in head-on collisions. Stallone quipped, “I said, ‘Close. I did hit a bus, of sorts."

I remember when I saw this in a multiplex in Portland, OR I heard a girl in the audience say "Oh! He's crying!" sounding like she was ready to cry herself during the scene when Apollo talks about how much the crowd cares about you when you're fighting but how, once you're gone, you're ancient history. Apollo is a well written character, Carl Weathers' performance brought him to life with depth and humanity that really touched people.

In real boxing a fighter or his corner rarely if ever calls a fight, that is normally the referee's call to make. What you see here is film boxing, which isn't close to the real thing(and rarely if ever this exciting), as a real ref would have called Apollo's fight in that first round(no towel throw required). You can also have a ref call a fight to early, as from his point of view, a fight might look worse than it is. If a boxer can't stand straight, or looks dizzy it can be called, its really left to the ref at his discretion.

Unpopular of a take as this may end up, I will say up front that I love this movie and it's always been my favorite one to rewatch. But there was one choice I really did not like.
I hate that they put the steroid injection in. It wasn't in the original drafts for the script. It was going to lead to exposing Drago's wife for being more interested in her standing with the politburo by trying to dope his blood behind his back. In that same script there was a note about where things could start in the next movie and Rocky being angry about it until learning that Drago was about to die directly because of what they did to him.

Generally, only the referee or the boxers manager can stop the fight to protect the boxer from injury. A boxer can stop the fight by telling his manager he done during the fight, the manager then alerts the referee that his fighter can no longer continue. Anti-doping laws are non-existent and often encouraged in Russia. They have no regard for the athletes health and wellbeing.

The reason that Apollo Creed was killed is because ever since "Rocky III," Stallone has been saying "This is the last Rocky movie." He killed Mick because he thought III was going to be the last. Then, when he made "Rhinestone" and it flopped terribly, he had to come back with a Rambo AND Rocky movie the next year, he killed Apollo because then IV was going to be the last one. And then "Rocky V" comes along and Sly decides to kill Rocky... but the studio steps in and stops it. And "Rocky Balboa" comes along and he says it's going to be the last one, but he actually tried to stick to his guns that time but MGM forced him to make "Creed" by threatening to recast the Rocky part (because Stallone had been turning the project down for several years).
Today though, Stallone says he regrets killing off Apollo Creed. Hindsight an' all that.

This film was a product of its time and may not be surpassed by any film today; and that's due to the internet spoiling the movie-going experience today [unless people avoid movie info beforehand].
For the way Stallone and everyone put this film together, we as the audience felt like we were watching a live event. Except for a couple of teaser trailers on TV, audiences didn't know much about this film. So, you could hear a pin drop in the theater when Drago killed Apollo. Then when Rocky cut Drago in the second round, popcorn went flying and we as the audience were out of our seats, yelling at the screen as though we were coaching Rocky and he could hear us. Lol

7:10 "Your head doesn't look like a punching bag."
Oh. You cut it. Well, that's unfortunate.
See, in this scene, Rocky's son expresses an interest in learning how to fight, like his father. But Rocky is against it. He says, "See, I fight so you don't _have_ to fight. So you can learn to use your head for somethin' instead of a _punching_ bag, like _I_ do."
See, let's be clear, here. Boxing has been very _good_ to Rocky. It has provided him with a generous income, with which he can afford to keep his family and raise his son in this _mansion._ But it has also _taken_ things from him he's never going to get _back;_ the kinds of things he has had occasion to _wonder_ about. It has closed doors for him.
And I've had occasion to look into it. According to the CDC, about 2% of the US population live with disability as a result of traumatic brain injury. But according to the National Institutes of Health, this extends to _20%_ of professional boxers.
The fact is, human beings are just not adapted to withstand hundreds of heavy blows to our heads every single fight, and no amount of training is going to _compensate_ for that. I think this scene illustrates that, on some level, Rocky understands that and wants something _better_ for his son.
This is why I stopped following the canon after this movie. I have found myself thinking it might've been better if subsequent films followed _Rocky's_ son as he grew up to go to college, get a degree in something technical, and then build a prestigious _career_ for himself as something along the lines of an engineer. Instead, they followed _Apollo's_ son as he followed in his father's footsteps to become another _boxer._ 🤷‍♂

I must explain you something about steroids.. yes it's a boost, but ofc u need to be strong,so Ivan he was strong and without steroids..no drug test in third Reich and Soviet union.. but u must know and Americans do steroids, all professionals athletes in high lvl..

There are 8 Rocky films. Rocky I - VI. and Creed I-II. And there is a spinoff, Creed III.
The next one, Rocky V. is classified as the worst Rocky film, but I tell you: it's very badly underrated. It's a brave, irregular one, not what you expect after the first 4, but I say that film is not bad at all!

Glad you did this one. It's definitely hard seeing Carl not only be gone in this movie but also in real life. RIP Carl. In terms of drug testing...for this fight? It's an unsanctioned bought. So unfortunately, normal rules....including drug testing for the athletes involved...don't typically happen
And we don't mind if you 'talk too much'. Just you being your beautiful self. It's all good. :)

Glad you watched, watch the Burning Heart Survivor video on here, showing band on it will less the pain in movie. You know Creed was happy seeing his guy train Rocky to knock out giant! So you know, in Rocky 3, when training famous like Creen in 1st, the blonde lady that came and kissed Rocky, was Sylvester's wife. Then Giant wife you hated, his 2nd wife. She acted in few other movies, divorced. Then married a beautiful model, had daughters, looking like their mother. Wish I was saying, it's after 4, come back to bed! Haha!

    Fun fact
Bridget Nelson the actress that plays Drago’s wife was married to Sylvester Stallone for 19 months in 1985………… she also co stars with Stallone in his movie Cobra which is another awesome action packed movie.

Stallone made a Director Cut of Rocky 4 in 2021. In my opinion it's much better than the original 1985 version, no Robot, and uses 40 minutes of alternat scenes. the link below is the make of the director's cut, Stallone explain why he felt the need to re-edit Rocky 4 into a more serious movie. ua-cam.com/video/suhqtn_brBs/v-deo.htmlsi=PbC65SpvNn1drOVT

Rocky tells Apollo that maybe this fight isn't about us versus them in Russia but about you vs. you. Creed laughed it off, but Apollo was right.
This movie is particularly noteworthy as we are vicariously involved in a war with Russia through Ukraine. In addition, the real Apollo Creed, Carl Weathers just passed away. 😢
This movie has so much relevance today. Rocky says at the end of the film that it's better to have two guys killing each other than millions of people.
This film had a really good story of redemption, but it was an anti-war movie at the same time. Will we ever learn? -OG

This movie came out during the time Russia was the big bad guy, tensions were really high. Sorry couldn't warn you about Apollo, but that would have ruined the reaction.
Enjoy your comments, don't worry about (talking too long), you always have something valid and interesting to express. Most emotional reaction so far.

Here's a fun fact. In the final fight montage. Sylvester Stallone wanted to feel how hard Dolph Lundgren could hit. Dolph, being a trained pro fighter, hit Stallone in the chest and almost stopped his heart.

Dolph has a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering I think. He’s not only a physical specimen but a very smart guy and he’s never really been acknowledged for that.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. Loved it. Of course I was 12 then. The more I watch it over the years, the more I realize that the training montage and the soundtrack are really the only good parts, although Rocky's speech at the end was a smart way to wrap it up. At one time I ranked this above Rocky III, but not anymore. Stallone should have called THIS one "Over The Top".

I just want to call this out.
    Drago seems to use steroids.
Yes there are tests but not perfect ones.
For example, the actor playing Drago is Dolph Lundgren, a 2x European Kickboxing champion, and he has admitted to steroid use even though they tested for steroid use in his real life but never found evidence to disqualify him.

Apollo's wife begged for the fight to stop ✋️ but Rocky hadn't thrown the towel yet to indicate the fight be stopped. He wanted to be a good friend and not stop the fight as Apollo wished, but his life was in jeopardy.
He threw the towel a little too late. I imagine that had to haunt him in some form. Would those extra few seconds of stopping the fight 🤔 prevent Apollo's death? We don't know, but he died doing what he loved.
The brief spotlight was on Apollo again. He loved the attention of the opening number before the fight. He said he felt reborn again. But was it all worth it? 🤔
Rocky was right about Apollo. He said maybe this was you against you. -OG

I am a fan of boxing and there's been some pretty horrific boxing matches. Almost 50% of Tysons matches are very brutal but there was one boxing match that was so horrific that I'm pretty sure that the boxer that was getting absolutely destroyed almost died in the ring. I can post it here but I warn you it's not pretty. I think it was in the 60s or 50s. I mean the boxer was out on the ground and the guy was still punching him with brutal blows.

Soviet athletes were often seen as robotic and portrayed like that in the movies. The USSR put a lot of resources into training for international competition like gymnastics, figure skating, hockey, boxing. It was a way for them to try and prove to the world that their communist system was superior. They wanted people to think someone like Drago was representative of their whole population, even though many had poor quality of life. Those athletes were selected from a young age and their accommodations were much better than most people. But they were also products of the state- they show it in this movie where Drago was training with all those people in the room, it was very much like they were building a machine.

Another reactor who was booing Apollo in the first two movies and warmed up to him in the third movie was pleading "Please don't die, Apollo! I like you too much now!" during Apollo's fight with Drago.
