Your fans have been waiting. You have delivered. Many of us, I assume think, after watching many other reactioners to Tropic Thunder that this is our pinnacle. This movie is an addiction and finding the best reactioners is our journey.
Ah another movie not allowed to be made today. It was more fun when movie nerds ran Hollywood. Glad you found this one! And the world did not end with its viewing :-). It’s incredible what we are all supposed to be offended by and yet no one can explain why, just that they are. It’s ok to laugh you guys. Multiple times you looked ashamed to laugh like you weren’t supposed to. We should just laugh at what is funny and not worry about what nameless faceless folks on the internet think. Who made this? Ben Stiller did. And we had a better Hollywood and world then. And it was five mins ago. Love your reactions!

Ben Stiller did not just star and direct this film... he also wrote and produced it.
One of his best.
Ben Stiller definitely is one of my favorite directors. He's not the best, but out of all of the directors in Hollywood that are mostly defined by their style, Ben just does a lot of weird things and sees if they stick. He's got a hugely varied pool of scores, but when he hits, he REALLY hits. The magic combo is if they can get Ben Stiller and Nicholas Cage to work together.
It speaks to how he was able to make Severance with such quality filming and direction.

@@D0S81 He actually has only completely made very few, He has directed and stared in quite a lot but stared, directed, written and produced... very few. Off the top of my head, i think it's actually like 2 or 3.
Upon checking... 3 films. Tropic Thunder, Zoolander and Zoolander 2. He has done a couple of TV series/releases ontop.
I loved the Walter Mitty movie
The fact that he is speaking Chinese but still won't give up the black accent is hilarious
i noticed that too, i love when actors can do that. best one i ''saw'' was Mel Blanc who does Bugs and Daffy, do Bugs doing an impression of Daffy but still sound like bugs, and vice versa, instead of just swapping their voices. its harder than just doing accents. As someone who does accents, mixing two like that is tough.

Yeah, THIS is how you do this kind of satire. When people complain that you “can’t do stuff like this anymore” they usually mean they’re mad that they, themselves can’t make racist jokes anymore.
It’s a fine line, for sure, but this is a master class in how it’s done right.

When Tom Cruise was asked to star in this movie, he only had 2 conditions. He wanted to dance and wear a fat suit with big hands, and Ben Stiller said "sure". Also roughly 3/4 of the character Les Grossman was improvised by Tom Cruise!
That is genius! He killed it as the studio exec! Probably because he based it off someone he knows 🤣
It sure comes off like Harvey Weinstein.
Was that the intent do you suppose? Long before his scandal broke he was already known to be quite the scumbag within Hollywood.
@@OfficialMediaKnightsit's widely acknowledged that his character was about 90% Harvey Weinstein. It's slightly soured by suggestions it's also anti-Semitic but that has never been confirmed. I just wish he would take more comedy roles, or just let him loose on the Les Grossman character for a whole movie!
Cruise pretty created the character! Ben Stiller said that he asked Tom Cruise to read the script and give his opinions during pre-production, and Cruise said that he thought the story needed another level to it, suggesting that an all-powerful studio exec be involved. Stiller liked the idea and Grossman was created. Cruise also asked that he not be named in any publicity, so his appearance would be a surprise to audiences.
Oh, and Matthew McConaughey’s character was due to be played by Stiller’s frequent co-star Owen Wilson, but Wilson was going through some personal troubles at the time so McConaughey stepped in at the last minute.

cant stand this "we exist in modern times so we know better and are better" mindset, especially after a certain ovid sickness proved them to be wrong. no actually you arent smarter, arent more "educated", arent more "sensitive to racial issues" than any other generations simply because we were born in "modern times" . Its been proven we are just as dumb.
The only people mad about this are this new generation who are mad at literally everything. Theyre constantly mad at comedians and actively boycotting them wherever and whenever they can, then ignoring people who say things and actually mean it.

As a fellow African American male RDJ's performance had me in tears! My stomach hurt watching this movie. Wasn't offended at all, because they were making fun of Hollywood.🤣
Hes the only actor that could pull it off on a worldwide stage. It was blackface turned at Hollywood. Not making fun of black people. I thought it was smart also. Couldn't be done today as everyone is offended by the sun being too bright and the night being too dark .
RDJ did the narration for the booty sweat commercial, and the funny thing about the beginning is that if you watched this in theaters, it played alongside other trailers, so you didn't know the movie started yet lol

@@OfficialMediaKnights That's how I saw it in the theater. I was about to make another trip to concessions when the first commercial started until I recognized Brandon T. Jackson. I started yelling to other people getting in my line of vision to sit down because the movie had started. Maybe they were too scared of the Black woman ordering them to sit down to disobey.
One thing many people miss is in the end credits when we see Matthew McConaughey's character flying back to the States on a G5. He took the offer, but used it to rescue his friend.
I did not know that, and it only makes me love this even more.
I watched this several times before it finally hit me.
All these years (I saw this in the cinema and on DVD multiple times) and I never knew about this! Cheers!

They must have cut a scene that would have made that connection more firmly, instead of him magically showing up at the end.
Here's a funny story about method acting.
When Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Oliver were working on the movie Marathon man, Hoffman played a sleep-deprived character, and stayed up for three days straight for a scene. When he told Oliver about it Oliver responded with "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?"
There's a similar story about Tim Allen and Allan Rickman during the filming of Galaxy Quest.
Robert Downey ACTUALLY finally drops his character at the end of the DVD Commentary. The DVD Commentary is equally as hilarious as the movie.

And bringing in Downey was quite a risk at the time because he was still considered to be too much trouble to bring in on projects. This movie released the same year as Iron man, but hit theaters before that career resurgence for him

This is hands down one of the best comedies of all time. RDJ somehow managed to nail that char and make it funny without being really offensive..I have never ever seen anybody else been able to pull that off
Why do you think they had Toby McGuire and the whole “everybody’s gay sometimes” line.
It was to establish that this dude goes insanely far into it so much so that he most definitely had intimate relations with Toby. Just for the role.
That’s really the only way it was to be handled. And why the majority of people don’t find this particular role to be offensive. Instead it’s epic.
It probably won't surprise you to know that RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for this role.
Shame he lost to Tugg Speedman.

This is, without a doubt, the gold standard for meta comedy. Just the idea of actors playing actors playing characters alone is well worth it.
RDJ fighting his face back into a scowl after grinning involuntarily is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. This movie is such a classic. Fun fact: I actually recognized the Jefferson’s theme song before it was remarked on and I was already nearly in tears.

apparently jack black was doing (or just got) Kung Fu Panda at the time and wouldn't stop talking about it on set - so they added in Ben Stiller's love of / killing a panda LOL

From what I have heard, Stiller originally wanted Cruise to play the agent. After reading the script, Cruise told Ben that he needed to have the studio perspective to tie it all together. So, Ben added the studio part, gave it back to Cruise and Cruise said he would play the studio exec but only if he could have fat hands and dance.
Actually the agent was originally supposed to be played by Owen Wilson but he had just tried to kill himself and was struggling mentally so Matthew took that role. Tom was only ever supposed to give him a critique of the script and suggested the movie exec les Grossman. That's the only role Tom even considered or was asked to play in it
Another fun fact for you, when Ben Stiller asked Tom Cruise to do this, Tom actually asked if he could have fat hands and he wanted to dance. He was really insistant about it. Ben Stiller didn't understand this request until Tom did it.
So Tom basically made the Les Grossman character what it was lol.
I think the line "Alpa, when you wrote 'I love da pu$$y, was ya thinkin' about danglin' your dice on Lance's forehead?" doesn't get enough appreciation 🤣

This movie is one of my absolute favorite comedies. I remember watching it in theaters on the same day as Iron Man 😄
This is IMO a Hall of Fame comedy. There's a lot of great comedies, but for all the crudity, this one is a notch above most, because of all the meta layers and excellent performances.
The characters in this movie are basically parodies of actual people in Hollywood. The action star, the warshed up comedy star, the extreme method actor, etc. This movie is a satirical take on Hollywood and I love it!
Pretty sure Jack was parodying Real life Robert Downey Jr.
This generation has no idea what he was before iorn man. He was unwell to say the very least. Anyone under 25 only knows him as the hero that literally saved the universe and that's honestly inspiring. Him saving his own life was a public miracle.
One thing that cracks me up is the first time I saw this movie, I hated it. I think I was pretty newly in the army and expected it to be more serious, and because it wasn't I hated it. Then years later, a buddy put it on one night while a bunch of us were hanging out and drinking. I almost pissed my freaking pants watching it and have been in love with it ever since.
Sometimes you gotta give a movie a second try. We actually do this with every film we’ve hated or disliked because you never know. Sometimes it’s just your mindset! Glad you enjoyed it eventually!

Where ben stiller did the pose in the beginning of the movie with epic music was from a vietnam movie called Platoon. Definitely worth a watch.

@@OfficialMediaKnights It's a classic, and part of director/writer Oliver Stone's informal trilogy on the Vietnam War, the other two movies being "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) and "Heaven and Earth" (1993), both great movies as well. Funnily enough, Tom Cruise is the lead in "Born on the Fourth of July", and to this date it's my favorite of his performances, and in "Heaven and Earth", Tommy Lee Jones delivers some absolutely haunting scenes.

He took the money and the plane,but he used it to save tug. Quick scene in the end shows him on the plane with his son.
I saw this in the theater. I decided that for the first time I'd watch a DVD commentary. It was worth it. It's still the only one I've ever watched. RDJ deserves an award. 😂
Sadly, this is the last documented instance of Kirk Lazarus surfacing for air and where we get to see him as he was. Later that year (2008), he would take on herculean task of becoming Robert Downey Jr, playing Tony Stark, playing Iron Man. A role in which Lazarus has become consumed by, and has not broken character even once in the last 16 years, even raising a family as the Robert Downey Jr character.

The main point a lot of people miss with Robert Downey Jr.'s "Full R****d" speech is how Hollywood tends to treat acting rolls that involve the handicapped and LGBTIQA+. You might've noticed in the pictures at the end that's what every actor other than Ben Stiller was nominated for before Kirk announced the winner.
The disability films definitely dominated the Oscar’s in the 99’s and early 2000s. A lot of them were great but some of them were definitely distasteful. It stopped being about the characters and more about getting praise from the academy.
Oh absolutely!! It's astounding that people with disabilities, who actually belong to the LGBTQIA+ community get overlooked for parts they are right for and it's still happening. Same thing goes for them casting a white man from Australia, paying for his genetic surgery to play a Black man in a Black part and not hiring someone who is actually, you know, Black.
Oh, like Disney's last 25 years.
I was dating someone who made me watch movies I would never watch. This was on the list..... By far one of the funniest movies I had ever seen. Downey Jr.'s performance was AMAZING! He talked quite a bit about the experience. He LOVED it.

I love you guys. Probably the most entertaining and savvy reactors here. But I can tell you guys struggled with this. Like you sometimes didn't know if you should laugh or not. I promise you, you're suppose to laugh at all of it.
Audiences completely understood the joke in 2008 (it being a satire of Hollywood). RDJ was nominated for best suporting actor Oscar for his role.
The only contentious thing about the film that was discussed was how frequent the "R" word is used. Not that it was used in general. People STILL understood what Stiller was making fun of (Hollywood's self importance, apathy, and cheapening of real people's struggles and experiences).
Ya, seems like so many of the inside jokes went right over their heads along with the countless memes....
One can tell they don't react to many Comedy's....

If any of you haven't seen The Gentlemen, you definitely should. Guy Ritchie absolutely crushed it, and McConaughey is great in it.
Hilariously listening to actor Jay Baruchel “the kid” playing Kevin Sandusky, - shouting cuss words left and right knowing he voices Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon makes all his interactions 20 times more funnier to me LOL.
He doesn't get enough credit for this movie. Too many good performances and he gets overlooked.

As much as I enjoyed the reaction, I enjoyed the post-movie chat even more! So insightful and genuine, and appropriate to the film. It is indeed a minor miracle that this film got made and on such a large scale, and also that it is as good as it is. Major props to Ben Stiller (and Tom Cruise!), and to our Media Knights for taking the time at the end to explain their thoughts and feelings so well.
As a side note, one of my favourite bits that never really gets mentioned is at the end when we see Tugg Speedman’s fellow nominees, featuring Sean Penn playing a blind guy and Tom Hanks playing a guy in a wheelchair! Both actors had been accused of doing exactly what Tugg did with Simple Jack, so I loved seeing that! I’m guessing they both must’ve given their permission for their likenesses to be used as well, so good on them for being sports.
American Made. One of Tom Cruise's best in my opinion. It was a crazy true story.

Tom Cruise stole the show for me. After this came out I read somewhere they were working on a sequel of sorts starring Grossman character. Then Cruise surprised an audience at some awards show in full characters & I was psyched af. Then I never heard anything else about it.😔

Seeing this in theaters was like... you see some trailers and ads... and then you see some more, and they keep getting weirder, and once you get it, you're like "wait, how many of the ones I already watched were fake?" Genius.
RDJ's performance is not offensive because it's not demeaning or degrading. I know some who speak in this manner. Especially during the '70's.
The important thing is also to remember, that he isnt playing a black guy in this. He is playing a guy, who is playing a black guy, and therefore the way he talks is based on his characters prejudice.
I'm just telling you as a movie watcher that I love this reaction from you even though I've seen so many from others I want to tell you how enjoyable it was to watch with you guys. People have been waiting for you for this moment. My life is completed on this journey of Tropic Thunder reactioners.😂❤😊

Fun fact: Les Grossman was Tom Cruise’s idea. The original script didn’t have a studio exec bearing down on the production team and Cruise felt that they needed that weight to make things more interesting. He loved the finished script so much that he decided to play Grossman. “I need fat hands and I’m gonna dance”, he said to Stiller 😂

I absolutely adore this movie. I think it is Ben Stillers best movie as director and as a movie fan I love this satirical point of view to the industry.
I didn`t recognize Tom Cruise until I saw the credits. Love every scene with him in it. Especially the first call of flaming dragon and Tom yelling at them. Ben asked him if he wanted to be in this movie and Tom said. "Only when I have huge hands and may dance!"
Every role was casted and written amazingly and everyone did a great job. You see and feel the mental issues every role in this movie has.

Surprised to have read really far into the comments and no one had mentioned RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Unheard of for a comedic role. The only other one I can think of is Kevin Kline for A Fish Called Wanda... and he won!

Never. Today people get personally offended when their clothes are still damp from the dryer... from their own dryer. I think the term is dryphobic.
I remember being legit confused if booty sweat was a real product when that came on in the theater. After watching similar ads and trailers, we didn’t know the movie had started until the Scorcher trailer.

Denise's laugh reminded me to recommend "Amadeus"! Milos Forman made a timeless masterpiece, it's worth watching it for sure!
Great reaction! Not only is this an awesome movie, but I can say that I got married at the same time where some of this movie was filmed. I was in Kauai in July of 2007 and stayed in a resort 2 down from the scene where Les Grossman had the remote feed with the crew - my wife and I walked through the set either before it was set up or after it was taken down. I also flew in a helicopter over the set/scene at the beginning where the jets blew up the tree line (saw the treeline and the tents from above - assuming before being blown up as I didn't see anything burned).
From a so called Black man, as a "Black" man RDJ is perfect! Also an homage to his father, Robert Downey, who did the voice of a "Black"man fire his movie Putney Swope (1969). I use the Malcolm X term "so called" because there is no country Black. So there are no Black people. And every human is a shade of coffee brown. Love this movie.

The end scene where Tom Cruise is dancing has absolutely nothing to do with anything else in the movie. But it’s hilarious and I can’t picture the film without it.
There are very few movies like this, for obvious reasons. Mel Brooks is the only other director I can think of who satirizes Hollywood, although he does it with more affection.
Stiller is a power in Hollywood so he can do pretty much whatever he wants. Among his many awards is a Teen Choice Award for best hissy fit in 2002's Zoolander.
Tropic Thunder heavily references Apocalypse Now and Platoon. The scene of Stiller getting riddled with bullets at the beginning is identical to a scene in Platoon where Willem Dafoe's character dies.

I appreciate that you picked up on what the character of Grossman was lampooning. That character was suggested by Tom Cruise after reviewing the script for Stiller.
During the mtv movie awards the year it came out this film was nominated in a category. And as promotional material and a bloody fun time. They got tom to come out as the character and he performed a whole routine. Even got to dance with JLo. Whole performance isn't on youtube but you are able to find bits and pieces about.

Well…in short we got into films more recently, before that we were more into theater and writing. In fact it was studying theater that got us into film and learning all about the behind the scenes is what made me (Ari) fall in love with a lot of the technical aspect of filmmaking. Plus we’ve been doing this for a while now while studying every film we’ve covered so yeah…we’re still learning and we’re still watching new things
Brilliant comedy and satire. This movie completely changed my opinion of Ben Stiller. Between this and Dodgeball, Ben Stiller is making some of the best comedies ever.
There Is no fucking way in hell they could make this movie today 🤣 Tropic Thunder is a treasure we have to protect at all cost.

Thank you! Comedy is a tricky thing, it's all about context. Satire specifically is notorious for criticizing while making you smile but still driving the point home. If you can understand what the satire is criticizing then you can definitely find this type of comedy funny. This was brilliant!

I love Bill Hardee’s audition story for this. He went in and Ben Stiller said he heard he could do an impression of one of the guys on set. Hader did the impression and Ben Stiller laughed like crazy and gave him the part without an actual audition for the character. That’s how he played him too, specifically in the ending scene.
Fun fact: while being tied up on the back of the cow thing, jack black got bucked off so hard he did a full backflip and almost hit his head on a rock. He said it's the closest he's ever come to dieing on set. Sadly, the camra wasnt rolling so theres no footage of it.
Tayback being shot in the beginning is a reference to "Platoon", the heroine on the table is "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" and the water torture scene is from the water cages in "The Deer Hunter". Also the Alpha Chino🙂 movie that is mentioned by the vietnamese guy during the fight at the end "Dog Day Afternoon" is outstanding (a true story), and it has John "Fredo" Cazale in it. Had never seen anyone recognize Nick Nolte!

Another meta experience was the Fake Machete trailer in the interlude between the double-feature Planet Terror (Robert Rodriguez) and Death Proof (Quentin Tarantino) film. They later actually made the film Machete (matching as close as possible the original fake trailer).
I've never subscribed to a reaction channel before (outside of "The Charismatic Voice"). I truly enjoyed your production insight and conversation about some tough topics. Most reaction channels seem to be just 'emotional shock value'. This was a breath of fresh air, Thank You both very much.
Ben Stiller is philosophically well-versed. All of his work is worth checking out. TBH, I think he's underappreciated, and it's no surprise to me that he gets the funding and approval for all of his projects.
