    Glad to see you doing a video on these topics and what the hands on in the impact zone couple with your gears data. Would like a video on how much the hips turn from impact to post. Does the hip turn slow or do they keep powering on vs how the arms and hands must be accelerating.

    I loved how clearly this was explained! I’ve been working on shaft lean forever now. My only fear with this is that I find I tend to hook the ball so that’s my biggest miss!! The worst part is that when I hook the ball the strike typically feels so good. So I’ve been feeling stuck trying not to hook the ball while still having a strong enough face to have an efficient strike. I find I flip my wrists in order to save the shot. For example my launch angle for my 7 iron tends to be up around 20 degrees which feels so inefficient. Compared to a crushed 7 iron at 16 degrees that hooks 🤦🏻‍♂️

    for a similar but different drill 1 at time 12:50, my instructor had me hit straight shots to the right, so regular setup, regular foot alignment and regular ball position, but hit the ball straight 30 degrees to the right, so you kind of push your hands forward right through impact. So you get a sense of face control when you hit the ball. However, this was maybe in response to my default outside-in swing path, so it was also a drill to practice exaggerated inside-out swing path. Because these things are all connected, it's very difficult to diagnose yourself without a pro watching you.

    I approve. Used to come over the top and cast like most guys. The minute I figured out I need to use the forearms/hands to shut it I was able to reliably hit punch shots. Later learned Hogan knew about it already - although he was probably wrong about the set in of the motion. Great work guys. Unfortunately this source of solid instruction is an island in a sea of 'Sir' Nick Faldos, Peter Costis and the likes. A lot of golf 'professionals' are actually not educated enough to help anyone. Most are just vendors of popular golf concepts - that also happen to be decent golfers - and many borderline conartists.

    Thank you for correctly saying that the weight on the toe resists rotation. I had an instructor tell me it increased rotation which as an engineer was frustrating to hear.

    • @drewgwins6073
      @drewgwins6073 3 роки тому

      So a golf club tries to naturally close itself? Then why does more weight in the toe of a club encourage a fade?
      Being a former golf pro, and engineer, I do realize that acceleration happens due to a force on a body and that body's resistance to move. Without the turning of the club back square, there would be no acceleration. Acceleration doesn't spontaneously happen.
      The initial comment is correct, the reply to it should be taken with a grain of salt.
      You should have passive hands on most shots. But that's because the swing happens so fast and the hands aren't strong enough, or consistent, to make accurate compensations.

    In my new swing there is at the moment since 2-3 months a too closed club face with a light out to in path and an early extension after shaft parallel in downswing. The strike and impact is amazing (thx to your videos). The rest is in my opinion ok. Is the open club face i had over years in the past the reason for the minimal out to in path and early extension ? And will my swing automatically change (shaft lean, in to out path, etc.) now after i have changed to a closed face ?
    Keep up your amazing work and greets from Germany =)

    Great video. The current 'in' swing theory of leaving the hands alone at the top of the swing and simply rotating the hips and shoulders to square the face is somewhat misleading. I think it helps prevent early extension (which most players have) but it still requires hand movement. You'd never generate much clubhead speed with only body rotation.

    Most teachers suggest hitting a draw thru setup and the relation between the club face and swing path because its too difficult to time a rotation of the clubhead at just the right time, given the speed of the downswing. I wonder if you are measuring the momentum of the arm that results from its position at the top, the rotation of the body, etc. Maybe there is a thin line between aiming the club and actively manipulating it. Supposedly the arms spring off the chest during the downswing, and the body does not have to rotate with the arm locked to in order it to affect it. I really like your approach, but wonder if measuring will always reveal the cause of a movement or the swingers intention and method. Thanks.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  Рік тому

      We measure intention every day. It’s at the heart of what we do. But intent is just the starting point and can’t overcome poor movements. For every player who’s ever swung a club, the club face is closing rapidly through impact. Where it starts at address can’t be maintained during the swing. It’s also why the correct concepts are so important when you wait on your swing.

    Agree with most of the video (and I have paid for your training in the past) but you can't simply compare the turning of the body in the shoulder plane with the closing of the clubface in the release plane.
    In fact, it is that very difference between two planes (the club plane and the hand plane - which is more vertical) that causes a torque to develop on any "toe-weighted" club.
    So whilst good golfers do have to tweak the closing of the clubface (through "educating" their wrists), most of it happens due to physics.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  2 роки тому

      I’m not sure what point you are trying to make. We have never compared the turning of the body in the shoulder plane with the closing of the club in the release plane. One, what is a release plane, and two, the body doesn’t turn on the shoulder plane. It turns on multiple planes. Most if “it” does not happen through physics. You are ignoring the torque that EVERY golf applies to the club, and the fact that the club does not twist evenly at both ends. I club face would square if the golfer did nothing and just relied on physics.

  • @vantumpete

  • @edkrueger7635

    So why don't you start with the clubface shut at setup to give you a head start on getting it closed the 20 degrees or so that you can't get just through body rotation with relatively passive hands? It may look strange but it would seem like it would be easier to master than trying to learn how to time the closing of the face with the small muscles of the forearms and hands.

    @Gumballa87 Рік тому

    I love your videos!
    But i.m.h.o rooted in simple physics there is no need for any motor cortex driven manipulations of the clubface - those dramatic rates of change in club face orientation can happen automatically (explanation below) - so it is factually true that said Player uses the body - more precisely the chest - to have the clubface connect with the ball either slightly closed or open depending on intended ball flight.
    Nerd mode ON: - Only read, if you believe in the stuff Newton came up with!
    You are measuring the rates of changes of the hinges in the system (human anatomy) - all is good so far.
    We are talking kinematics still as in seeing what changes happen in the systems variables (wrists, bones, club) over time.
    But talking about forces now there are two very important things to acknowledge (here comes Newton):
    1.) as long as there is torque applied to the upper left arm through its contact with the chest, the arm club unit is in a force equilibrium.
    Since we are talking about a rotating system: all parts (shoulders/ wrists/ clubhead) rotate at the same torque dependend rate at different radial velocities.
    2.) As soon as the torque stops (the chest has reached it's intended "destination" in the kinetic chain) the arm club unit keeps moving as any mass in motion does. Eventually the right arm has reached it's maximum length - the anatomy of the arms and wrists only allow for a very specific "folding" to happen - since both hands grip a stick - that is the "rolled over" postion with both arms straight with the right on top of the left. That is when we have a new force equilibrium building - this time through decelleration - caused by the right shoulder pulling the chest and ultimately the body into the finish position against the resistance of ligaments and muscles.
    Now back to the kinematics of the wrists and clubface: the rates of change in the degrees of freedom of the arm/wrists/club unit you measure will be governed by the external forces (the weight of the arms and the club pulling and thus rotating the arms and wrists) and NOT neccessarily by applying forces to the club using muscle activity!

    Why did modern golf instruction, well at least instruction over the last three years or so, move away from learning how to use your hands? Yes, like Shaun mentions in the video, professionals talk about not thinking about what their hands are doing during the swing, especially around impact. However, what many modern teachers don’t talk about is professionals and good amateur golfers learned to first use their hands to square the face. I remember reading books from Toski and Flick that talk about the need for golfers to first get skilled using the hands. I don’t think guys like Flick and Toski get the credit they deserve for their teachings.
    I have to say that I was learning from a Pro who taught the idea of getting both knees to go external in the downswing. I was watching an old video of my swing doing this and, not only did it look ridiculous to me, I was so much on my back foot as I was nearing impact the only chance I had to hit a solid shot was to flip and hope to god I timed it right. 😧 also, I was told keep my hands passive at the top. As I learned from you guys this is a horrible idea.

    Shawn, may this the reason I am so flippy and duck hook?

    An open clubface and shaft lean have nothing to do with shanking. A shank is a ball hitting the hosel. It is caused by the club moving too close to the ball at impact. The clubface can be open or closed.

    I know you guys at AMG have seen the numerous internet golf instructors who really push for the idea that body rotation is a better way to square the clubface without the need for "timing." Not to mention tv commentators who partly it. I don't expect you to call them out by name, but you have evidence based
    proof what they say is bull. I'd love to see a debate on the topic.

      If you look at just the fastest rotators on Tour, they have roughly 15 degrees of body rotation from shaft parallel to impact. The club face during that same time rotates 3 times that amount… even for a player like DJ. There shouldn’t be any debate if you include the facts 🤓. If you include opinions, ideas, theories, etc then the debate would never end 😵‍💫

    I have been trying to get shaft lean and square the club face by simply turning my body for the last 30 years thanks to David Ledbetter. I have never played good golf slicing no power hitting the ground before the ball. Thanks to AMG and this very very important eye opening tip. I am finally able to compress the ball with shaft lean. NO more PASSIVE HANDS for me. WORST 30 YEAR OLD ADVICE EVER. UGGH

    What I don’t understand is people talking about how a flippy release is bad then. Surely all the best golfers are flipping no one is holding that face?

      They throw the snot out of it. No holding at all. How and why so many golfers trying to hold angles through impact is a black mark on our profession 🤦‍♂️

      @@AthleticMotionGolf thanks for replying! I was just at the range and hating my face on look on video with no shaft lean. I tried to get my body over and get that shaft leaning but it’s clear from this video I was going about it completely the wrong way. Completely over the top and the good strikes were pulls.

      @@J_B17 it’s not easy at first, but force yourself to slow down (under 45 mph) when you’re working on making a change. You’ll need to go slow enough to “keep up” with what you’re changing. Once you can do it at that speed without doing it wrong, you’ll move faster by way of making better and better movements.

    Why not just grip it and hit it like that? Is that not just a strong grip, then you would not have to roll the forearms so much, why make it complicated? Please explain

    A lot of timing involved here, unless you hit hundreds of balls a day, good luck.
