@@OG-SPARTAN86o you have power outlet in your truck? If so battery won’t be a problem. If you don’t play many AAA games, I recommend Steam Deck over ROG Ally, mainly because it’s more rugged, and once a game is installed, it will almost never have a problem booting up whatsoever and will run consistently every time. It’s not the same with Ally, it’s like PC so sometimes the game crashed and broke and I have reinstalled or tinkering a bit. Just wanna add my opinion cuz sometimes time is money and you don’t wanna waste time fixing the problem while waiting for customers lol 😂. But if you play more modern AAA, Ally is no brainer

Battery life will get better (Phawx has proven this) and a power bank with the Ally is way smaller and cheaper than an equitable laptop. Solid state cooling runs into physics laws of energy. No magic physics bullet. Be careful with companies and marketing 😉

Only you have mentioned this as a serious issue, its the only thing preventing me from purchasing steam deck or rog ally, didn't happen on Nintendo switch oled but we know why, (lack of serious power )
For anything to be gained, something must be sacrificed, and unfortunately, the battery revolution never progressed. Many try to avoid this by saying they only play short sessions. However, I know that deep down they wonder if the batteries can hold up for longer. I am one of those who plays on handheld devices like the switch OLED for long sessions.
Though I really want one, I can't get over how short the battery lasts and the idea that I need to keep it plugged into a power bank or charger

When I think about potentially buying an ROG Ally, I honestly don't even think about the battery life. When you're playing games - you're almost always stationary. In fact - not being stationary would probably be dangerous. I already know and assumed it'd be terrible, because the reality is that battery technology just isn't to a point where you can viably get several hours out of the small sized batteries we're able to cram into smaller devices without making huge compromises on the power of the device. What's exciting about the ROG Ally for me is it's versatility and power for the price. It can viably replace your desktop PC, gaming laptop and gaming console. Imagine getting this thing, having a dock + an Ultrawide at your desktop space, a dock for your wall near your couch/bed, and a dock that plugs into your HDTV alongside a controller. You can take this device, that essentially has the capabilities of a desktop PC w/ a RTX 3050 in it and play games in a handheld environment, in a desktop-gaming style environment and a console style environment. One $700 device, as opposed to a $1000 gaming laptop/desktop and $500 gaming console. Hell - like PC gaming, plan on going over to a friends for a LAN but don't want to have to worry about setting up a desk space? Take your ROG ally, the charging cable and a wall power brick, sit on your friends couch/bed and play games with them.

You are just minority as handhelds are there for mobility not for being plug in every single time you turn on your device. Dont even compare your device to laptops and PCs. As they are not solely for gaming.
Asus rog ally is only for people that are replacing their own trash PC or console. For most people tho, rog ally is not good if the battery is trash. It kills the main purpose of the console. At this point asus could invest in small gaming laptop with bigger battery or overall better spec. Gaming PC consoles are just overrated, because they are marketed as mobile device, but cant handle1-2 hours outside.

The problem with the Ally isn't the bettery life at the top end. That was always gonna be under an hour. That's just physics. They can jam 200 grams of more better in and that number won't hit 2 hours.
The problem is the performance you get when you're not pushing it to the max. Not everyone bought this device for max performance. I'm much more interested in the screen and VRR and quieter fan. I wanna play Spiderman on this but I also wanna play Hollow Knight and the latter can only get about 3 to 4 hours on the Ally. This is compared to 7 on the Deck.

I am loving my Ally. Yeah, the battery life is short. I can disconnect from power and play for a while though, and the 65 watt charger does charge faster than the competition's chargers. So, shorter playtime, but also shorter recharge time. It's a compromise. I'm usually around power if I want to play for longer than an hour. On smaller, or indie titles, which I play a good bit of, the Ally does good in Silent mode, which will give a lot more than an hour.

Battery life with evolve and get better. You can expect solid state lithium batteries and graphene to make their way into the handheld/laptop market within the coming years, when it comes to battery advancements. When it comes to overall cooling, you can expect the market to slowly begin adopting frore systems cooling solutions into existing vapor chamber and Liquid Metal systems, which could eventually replace the fans on these small devices. Those alone will drastically improve performance and decrease size. Companies might also start adapting dust filters around the interior vents of the devices.

As much as i would like a 10 hour battery life on one of those devices, if it would mean adding another 500-600€ in device cost and tons of weight id rather carry a powerbank. especially when traveling as soon as you are in a train or a plane you usually have wall outlets anyways and for the few bus rides and small trips in like a taxi or something the 2-3 hours you can get out of it are imo more than enough.

For me the two biggest problems is battery, witch may be Windows's fault and the temps. I've seem videos of the ally getting up to 90 degrees, while yes, still in the device "fine" area, is still really hot and may lower the longevity of a really expensive device, especially here in South America.

i usually set my tdp to 12 watts and set my resolution to 1080p and game settings to medium. my aim is to get at least 50 fps. for harder to run games, i set my resolution to 720p and use RSR. The graphics still look nice. For specific case, like spiderman, i set the tdp to 15 watts and still get 50 fps at 1080p. total draw at 12 watt tpd is 17 while at 15 watt tdp is 23, thats good enough given the device only has a 40 wh battery. the advantage with the ally is the beautiful screen. things look beautiful compared to my qhd onexplayer

Battery life doesn't really bother me at least it charges fast. I think the best i have gotten is maybe 2 hours. I mean ya it kinda sucks i wish it was better but this thing is pushing some pretty impressive performance. I think they will fix the lower watt gameplay and make this more efficient for less demanding games but i dont see it getting better for more demanding games. Its gonna be a hour to 2 hours of gameplay. It is what it is. Im more concerned about asus continuing to improve the overall experience because in my opinion dock mode needs alot of work. I haven't been so frustrated with a piece of tech in a long time. The software needs work. Dock mode for me was almost to painful to use. Im getting a bluetooth keyboard / trackpad and im hoping it makes it a little better for navigating. Flip flopping from touch screen to gamepad mode to desktop mode is ridiculous and auto doesn't work for shit for me. Pointer doesn't always pop up on screen when i put it in desktop mode either and i have had the keyboard not pop up also which is annoying. I know there is hot keys for the keyboard but you shouldn't have to do that. One other note with dock mode is if you connect a xbox controller to it you can not move the cursor around with the xbox controller you have to get up and do it on the ally. Maybe there is a fix to that but its super annoying and thats why im gonna get a cheap wireless keyboard/track pad. Besides these complaints im keeping the ally. Its a beast and as soon as you get in a game it works excellent. The screen, speakers and overall gaming experience is top notch. Its just the software that needs refining and i hope they adress it. I feel like they rushed it out a little bit just like most the games lately. One more thing they need to make the Xbox controller or wireless controller able to open command center and armor crate. Maybe there is a way to map one to do it but I haven't seen it.

I'd call this device, 'semi portable'. Portable in the sense it's easy to take it from place A to place B, going from one outlet to another. With enough power to do some gaming between those two locations. A definite advantage over a laptop as this device also comes with the controller, using a touchpad on a laptop isn't ideal. Of course you still have battery packs for longer trips but 9/10 times you'll want to be near an outlet.
These handheld devices with smaller screens also benefit from not needing higher resolutions to look as good.

A decent spell of retro gaming, again you have it. As long as you are not expecting to AAA game for the duration of a flight to or from holiday that you are going to need an extra power source for then I cant see many other situations where the battery is an issue. If you are at home, plug it in. In the car, plug it in.
For a long time we never had the hardware to even be able to play at this kind of fidelty on a handheld so we have gotten over the first hurdle. What most people seem to not realize (since very few handheld enthusiast are also hardware savvy), is that the hardware in Rog Ally isn't just more powerful then the Steam Deck, it's more power energy efficient also... It's using Zen 4 instead of Zen 2 CPU, it's 4 nm vs 7nm, it's 12 vs 8 GPU cores. This hardware should work noticeably better also at 10/15 W compared to the Steam Deck using the same game settings. However, it's up to Asus to make it happen. Valve made battery life number one priority and really did it well. Asus underestimated this. They had to put а bit bigger battery, since the device could take it, and to optimize for ALL power profiles better. People also claim that Windows is "bloated"... Yep, it is, but keep in mind that Linux is server centric OS. All standard linux distributions do worse then Windows on battery. So, it's not because "linux is just better", Valve put the work and made it happen.
Do I hold my breath for Asus to make this device really shine as it should... Nope. You buy what you have now, next year, they will be working on Ally 2... I personally need a powerful portable device, will use it connected. If I really go somewhere remote, I will bring a power bank anyway, since 15-20 min extra, doesn't make much difference. I guess that was the thinking of Asus also. This device is for older age group. People that commute between house, working places, hotels, friends, etc and being away from the grid for small amounts of time. If you want battery life, you are probably looking at Nintendo Switch anyway.

The hardware on the Ally isn't more power efficient. Rather, depending on the context you mean by "efficient" in this case it most likely isn't. Plug the Ally in, max out the TDP in docked mode it will give you more graphical horsepower per watt of energy consumed. However, that efficiency exists only at the highest end of its usable TDP. The lower you go on TDP the less efficient the Ally is compared to the Steam Deck. The Deck's APU is a completely custom chip designed from the ground up for playing video games at ultra low TDPs; the Ally's APU, which is a repurposed laptop APU, simply can't compete at TDPs as low as the Steam Deck operates at.
The Deck's APU is designed to operate at a TDP of between 4 to 15 watts. The Ally's APU is designed to operate at between 20 to 45 watts. Any APU will operate less efficiently outside of its effective use range. At a TDP of let's say 10 watts the Deck is in its prime whereas the Ally's APU is absolutely starved for power and barely functioning. Remember that TDP is a measure of heat rather than power consumption and that when you set a TDP you're setting a ceiling to that heat rather than deciding a constant level of power. When you play games on the Deck at a TDP of 15 it usually, unless the game is 100% maxing out the Deck's APU at every moment, operate at a lower power consumption than what would produce a TDP of 15 at full usage. The ALly at a TDP of 15, in the same game at roughly the same settings, will actually be 'maxing out' the APU for that TDP to produce the same image.
Now the Ally can do more proportionally than the Deck, but that's only at higher levels of power consumption. The Ally does more with what it can do at a TDP of 25 than the Deck can do at a TDP of 15 proportionally speaking. This increase in performance comes at the obvious cost of battery life. This battery life cost isn't just true when we are talking about maxing out the Deck vs. maxing out the Ally; it's also true when you play less graphically demanding games as well.

    • @smidlee7747
      @smidlee7747 Рік тому

The 7840 U best efficiency is around 20 watts while the Deck custom chip is 11 watts. The farther you are away from these wattage the less efficient the chip becomes. This is why the Deck outperforms the Ally at 10 TDP and lower while the Ally outperforms the Deck at 15 TDP. After 11 TDP the performance gain for the extra wattage drops off on the Deck. There is only so much Asus can do on the software side as the 7840u is a general purpose laptop apu designed to run at 15 TDP to 30 TDP while the Deck custom chip was designed to run 3TDP to 15 TDP.

I feel like battery shouldn't be that big of a problem if you apply a bit of common sense. If you buy any portable console throughout history, you'll get portable games with limited graphics and performace, so if you actually want this to match that experience, it'll have to be in all aspects. The upside here is that you have the option to push it much further when that battery isn't a concern, which is not an option for a console.

Want to see how future handheld design their new models for replaceable battery. Or is the new law only apply to smartphone?
    Also to answer your question,

I don't buy any console but the reason I only own steamdeck because I play a lot of pc exclusive games that use a lot of keybinds, I don't play those AAA console games you guys are mostly playing. So it's the only device that answers my need and at a affordable price.
The only reason I look at ally is to use it to play japanese Visual Novel games I owned in DMM which Ally is overkill for that job. If I gonna buy one I'd probably wait when there is more cheaper window handhelds.
