Motivation is a temporary thing, like a drug, the more you take it the more you want more. Don't seek motivation, seek and build discipline instead. And to build discipline all you have to do just start.
    How to build discipline:
    1️⃣ Start small.
    2️⃣ Make it regular.

One of my favorite quotes from solving the procrastination puzzle by Tim Pychyl:
“Let go of the misconception that our motivational state must match the task at hand. In fact, social psychologists have demonstrated that attitudes follow behaviors more than (or at least as much as) behaviors follow attitudes. When you start to act on your intention as intended, you will see your attitude and motivation change.”
It is a great short book.

    3 main takeaways:
Motivation isn't the spark, but rather the roaring fire that burns deep inside you after you've successfully taken the correct action steps and built momentum - many times before any fuel was available to you.
"I can't" refers to external environment, situations and resources, whereas "I don't" refers to an identity, the type of person you are (more empowering)
You don't need to build all the skills at once. You can focus one at a time, in 5-7 year blocks, and become world class at it, then move on to the next thing while leveraging the unconscious competence of the past development.

One of the tricks that makes me work hard on my dreams even during tough times is constantly visualizing my vision- the life I want to live in in shaa Allah some years to come. The more am visualizing that constantly, the more am trying and improving even at a point when I feel like quitting. The less I visualize, the lazy man I become. There is a trick that works for everybody. Know thyself for the trick that works and gets you inspired 100%

It’s an outside force that is compelling you to take action, even if you don’t necessarily want to. Inspiration, on the other hand, is more of a pull or driving force. It’s something that comes from within that gets us to proactively give our best effort.

Hi Ali. Here are some things I thought of as I ruminated over these ideas. Great video, btw!
    1) Sometimes you don't see immediate progress as you work on things/ in the process of reaching your goal. for eg as someone who is learning music I'm sure you can relate to this, as progress shows very slowly even though you're making very real and productive progress with a certain momentum.
    2) Sometimes the short sugar rush is what pushes you over the cliff into that productivity. So to get ourselves started should we startwith the 5 second rule?
    3) I can't- I don't idea is simply brilliant. When ine puts it into their life consciously it'll work wonders!
Would love to hear your inputs on this!

I just want to say thank you because generally people (society) is telling to niche down, to be the best in something,be an expert. Do one job until you die, dedicate yourself to that one goal etc. But yeah yiu showed me that its possible to become an is officer, to travel around the world, cook food and bake some cakes, sell some cakes😉😄and yeah you have got a life. Why should you be stressed thinking that you can be best in only one thing or one passion. We are humans we have different sides to who we are. So why don't we express them all? To be a generalist and do multiple things is kinda scary to think cause that's not what "successful visionaries" do.I mean thank you so much, it made me believe in myself again.

Maybe being one thing is actually bad because you rely only on that and constantly anxious about what if it fails or what if I piss off some person here and they are a gatekeeper and my life is over etc. And if everyone knows that you only have one leg to stand on - they can constantly push so you do what they want. Very good idea. Plus a more stable solution. I should start something up.

My goal was to be in the 99 percentile bracket. But I totally did not think about the end goal, instead enjoyed the process of waking up at 5 am and studying for 3-4 hours every day. Did that consistently for months. I did eventually cleared the exam with about 98 pc. Today when I see those notebooks full of hand written notes , I realise it was all about those 3-4 hours.

Discipline and systems always beats out Motivation!

I don´t think the increased happiness comes from stacking up skills, I would argue, it is the other way around: When you feel free to explore different interests you are already happier than someone who does not want to explore new things. The greater variety of skills comes afterwards.
I think a great source for happiness is curiosity :)
Also thank you, Ali for introducing all these ideas into my life by making your awesome videos!

Motivation is a "feeling-based" strategy which is at the whim of fluctuating internal states.
Discipline is an "automated-process" that does not fluctuate based on internal or external states.

The jack of all trades is reassuring to hear. Ryan holiday discussed To Be or To Do in his book, and it seems life is a consistent roll call between aspiring and settling in and doing. Yes we have 10 more 5 year chunks in our life, but at what point do we decide to 'Do' instead of 'Be'? I guess we can never let the child in us die, and forever be creative.

Ali! I love your content! I actually bought Atomic Habits and I just finished it! amazing book and I am applying some of the things in the book! I also like the fact that you acknowledge that you are a little bit narcissistic, a little bit, so that can be improved! but anyways, we are all a bit narcissistic! have a great day!

This is actually very timely and helpful because I’ve been working on a new video for my channel (petamarine, not this one) for months now and it’s just dragging on forever. So this helps :)

Ali is one of the best stars on the web. My pennies worth - Motivation takes place more when you can see the actions that cause what you want to be yours especially when you believe that you can do the steps left to get you to where you want to be and when you realise you just completed a step so now there are only 3 steps left and you will hold the reward in your hand you feel an increase in motivation. Desire is the starting point. Either to gain some pleasure or avoid some pain. However, ACTION does not always lead to success and so cannot always produce motivation. At these times you either need the habit of say, doing the daily running to get fit enough to run a marathon or you need to fan the desire of what it will feel like to have your reward or brush up the beliefs that you will have it, perhaps because you will find a way to get it with steps you can do.

You’re so right!! I’ve started to realise the importance of implementing systems to work towards my goals. Super powerful stuff what you mentioned about the language we use. Wow! 💕
Currently working on editing travel vids for my new channel and I absolutely love it but some days or whenever it I encounter a very steep learning curve I really don’t feel like working on them but I need that discipline to keep uploading every week ✨

I just found your channel and I find your ideas intriguing, like this motivation thing really resonated with me. But it makes me think about my depression that has sometimes been really bad, and the beginning of a depressive episode can often feel like loss of motivation, like the dopamine feedback loop that you mentioned is just broken, successes don't fuel any kind of motivation and it all just falls apart.

You talked about being a jack of all trades and generalist. I literally have been building my personal brand around these concepts, especially polymathy. I actually host a show where I interview individuals such as yourself Ali!
