It’s gotten to the point where I have to sit and watch a movie while alternating between TikTok and candy crush to not feel withdrawal symptoms. It’s driving me insane

Tell your 18 y/o to get disciplined and stop searching for motivation. Motivation can only get you so far, but discipline is what keeps you going. Tell your son to not get lost in the world of productivity UA-cam videos, because it's very easy to fall into the trap of feeling fulfilled after watching another person do what YOU should be doing.
unfortunately everything he says is just theory. there is zero scientific evidence to prove anything he says. if you don’t believe me go ask your doctor to measure your dopamine levels in your brain.
One thing that has worked for me (which falls in the phone fasting category) is taking my dog for a walk immediately after I wake up. So literally, roll out of bed, put shoes on, leash him up, and get outside. It puts space between me and all the "normal" distractions that get in the way of a good morning. I get a good walk in, and then when I am home, the phone doesn't really feel enticing at all. Thankfully my dog is a good sport too because if he didn't want to get up I'd be in trouble 😅
I try to do this too and on the days I do, it makes SUCH a difference to my mood and my focus, it's amazing how something so simple can totally change the trajectory of your day!
I haven't listened to music in anywhere in public, including on public transport or on walks, for years. I stopped doing it nearly ten years ago because I started becoming very anxious not being aware of my surroundings. Now, I honestly think it's a game changer for me. Sure, it was "boring" at first but I can't remember the last time I felt bored doing it. It makes doing things like going to the gym (something I do without music too) much more mindful and intentional. More recently, when I tried to make an effort to use my phone and social media less, it felt much easier as a result. Honestly I can't recommend taking your headphones off and just trying out the world without Doja Cat in your ears more - though I appreciate it's hard to get started. That said, I don't think I could give up music on flights that are over 2 hours long, that's too far even for me

This is sooo interesting. I started doing this as well recently and I thought perhaps I was overthinking it, but I just think there something to not having your mind occupied by externalities all the time. It has allowed my brain to think a lot more and come up with creative solutions or even just manage my thoughts when I feel anxious
Funny you mention singing with a group - singing in a choir filled my cup like nothing else. I'm not an phenomenal singer by any means, but I experienced such moments of pure joy and euphoria. Sounds mad, but with the right group, it made me so happy, and really enriched my life. Highly recommend, but again, the right choir is vital!
It's alarming how much we've become over reliant on the dopamine hits. For comfort, convenience, and the shiny objects we've been trained to throw away our dreams, our goals, and just settle for consumerism.
UA-cam has changed my life, and I have to say that being a UA-camr is almost like running a business. You always need to give your viewers what they want. You can't become complacent at any moment. At the end of the day, toughest part is definitely starting your channel and growing it up to the point you become successful (and honestly if I haven't used a lot of famester, I would have quit a long time ago. It was a proper game-changer for me, and once you become successful it is a great tool to control algorithm).
I've been trying very hard to avoid my phone and staying away from anything that is addictive. Some days I accidentally regress backwards, but on the days I stay away from my phone, it's like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes it becomes a bit of a contradiction when I think back to the day before where I was so full of energy and felt great versus the sensation of rotting. I can't express how important it is to maintain this and I'm glad this video explained it even further

Just recently I had the success of pushing past the mental block and find enjoyment on the other side. I’m working to start a UA-cam channel and defining my audience has been a challenge. But with the help of the 5 Hour UA-camr course and some time, I climbed the hill and about 20 minutes in began the joyful ride to shaping and moving toward my goal. Oh man, I just started listening to the podcast. It was funny seeing this pop up and realizing for once I actually knew what it was about beforehand! Really good talk though, I always love these kind of things because, even if you _know_ something, it's helpful to hear it again and get it internalized a little bit more. I really liked the tips for just starting your morning - it's not uncommon for someone to say you should just get started, don't look at your phone, etc etc, but for some reason having it framed against the backdrop of dopamine and motivation really makes it click. I definitely have never made a habit of choosing a harder path and idk, maybe I should try.
Porn addiction, weed and junk food and poor sleep were pretty much all the things giving me brain fog. Once I stop doing all of these my brain fog is pretty much gone! I also found that fixing vitamin and mineral deficiencies along with taking a Omega 3 supplement help a lot too. The rest is my diet, low carb throughout the day, high carb for workouts and strenuous activity. Drink plenty of water too!

In these years i add in my everyday life habits such as: Meditation, reading, listening good music, talk with new people when i have the possibility and others... I think that it is important to find pleasure again in the small things. 10 years ago in my early 20s I went through a horrible year in my life where I "rotted" before it was spoken about. I became very depressed and agoraphobic. I could come to my front door, then I'd get so afraid and anxious that I'd crawl back into my home and try to forget that I was throwing away my education and social life. It was horrible. I don't know how I got through it. I'm glad girls are talking about this online, perhaps they will fare better than I did.

Growth is unlocked when you understand life is about pain-pleasure balance. You can't make gains at the gym without putting in the work. You can't get dopamine without doing something difficult. You can't get lost in your music if you don't first sit down and practice at the piano. Everything is a give and take.

As a mom who does let her children have occasional screen time, this video really made it click for me how the screens are hurting my kids brains. Everyone says it, but never a why that actually made logical/biological sense instead of just judgement. Boredom increases dopamine! It literally IS good for kids to be bored! Time for more “music only” days as I call them! And for me too.
Such a good video. I think men in our country are the most greatly effected by dopamine hacking. There are so many people out there that will defend porn use to the death, but I think it's one of the single biggest factors making our men unmotivated.
I think the best way for human beings to move forward to be in an equilibrium state of mind and having a substantial self awareness that comes to them naturally without so much of struggle to put in the effort, is to incorporate some sort of activities like meditations, nature walks, etc., starting from primary schools, activities that very typical in monasteries or any places offering spiritual or well-being practices. These activities should be made as part of a curriculum in each and every schools and universities in the world. This will allow human beings to have a more balanced and fruitful lives, improve mental and emotional health, maintain a happy balance between technology and actual LIFE. There are many scientific research and findings showing that these activities have long lasting permanent benefits to human mind/brain. This is just my 2 cents as a corporate tech worker for 38 years of my life. 😄
I am struggling in a dopamine loop of doing things I don't want to just because of dopamine. I'm gonna be honest dopamine is a fine glass of beer. Once you start it, you can't stop it. Anyways found this video helpful. At the time of writing I'm 10 mins in the video and I can say it is a banger.

I have seen these kinds of videos a few times now and I wonder if this really applies to everyone? I do a lot of the "bad" stuff, like watching YT, eating unhealthy food and indulging regularly in all other kinds of "dopamine spikers". And yet, I never seem to lack motivation ... ? The rest of the time I am super busy working, doing sports, organizing and planning all kinds of aspects in my life etc. The dopamine spikers just act like a relaxant to me. I can go for a hard work-out and then work on some complex mathematical research for 8h straight, right after I spiked my dopamine. It never erodes my motivation, it has not in almost 40 years on earth. I managed to get PhD in mechanical engineering, start a company, run the company and keeping it alive, keeping very fit physically, learn a lot of "bonus" stuff as part of hobbies, such a fluency in multiple foreign languages such as English, Japanese and French, martial arts, mini skills that i pushed quite far like cooking complex things, tailoring etc. I got married, I spend good time with friends every week... I have the feeling that I was possibly just born with some lucky brain-damage, because even doing tedious and "annoying" things often give me dopamine. If I write some nerdy math software stuff I often encountered the situation that I really feel like getting a chocolate bar, but the pull to fix the bug is greater. And it's not like an "obsession" things, it's really that I just enjoy these processes so much. so I end up not getting the chocolate for hours because work feels more ... fun? This keeps happening and does not seems to dull down as I get older. And yet still I think I could not quit the "mini spikes" like candy, chocolate, other food, youtube and ****. They just naturally balance with work and other "important" things. I feel like I have no discipline, I am just lucky to love doing many many things. Can anyone relate?
So I've lived on this Earth starting like in the TV generation and working my way to the internet era and now social media and smartphones. The main thing I've learned from this so far is how the dopamine is created and how that it's consumed. But the last thing I need or want is for someone that's so much younger than I am, to tell me not to unlock my cell phone, and use something else as an alarm clock. So from my perspective you told me how the dopamine is created and how it is used up, in red headlong from their tried to change everything, including the way that I live. It's the executive dysfunction that is so hard to deal with and the judgement from people who dont know what ADHD is or people don't believe adhd is real. Having a morning routine with meditation, making my bed, and gratitude journaling helps me a lot. However, I feel the struggle to start a task so much, which makes me procrastinate leaving the house or starting work once my morning routine is over. It's especially hard with my content creation. I will film videos I feel excited about but the funnel starts at the editing stage, and even when I overcome that, I face the same difficult thoughts when it comes to posting, thinking it's the wrong moment or the wrong post for that moment or that it's bad etc. Do you have any suggestions for those (task switching and overcoming those doubts)?

You can't be over-reliant on a neurotransmitter. Can you use your phone too much? sure. But this is not what they're suggesting.

In these years i add in my everyday life habits such as: Meditation, reading, listening good music, talk with new people when i have the possibility and others... I think that it is important to find pleasure again in the small things. Now that i'm in Australia and travelling the world, i'm trying to understand what i really want from my life and these good habits are helping me a lot.

10 years ago in my early 20s I went through a horrible year in my life where I "rotted" before it was spoken about. I became very depressed and agoraphobic. I could come to my front door, then I'd get so afraid and anxious that I'd crawl back into my home and try to forget that I was throwing away my education and social life. It was horrible. I don't know how I got through it. I'm glad girls are talking about this online, perhaps they will fare better than I did.

Growth is unlocked when you understand life is about pain-pleasure balance. You can't make gains at the gym without putting in the work. You can't get dopamine without doing something difficult. You can't get lost in your music if you don't first sit down and practice at the piano. Everything is a give and take.

As a mom who does let her children have occasional screen time, this video really made it click for me how the screens are hurting my kids brains. Everyone says it, but never a why that actually made logical/biological sense instead of just judgement. Boredom increases dopamine! It literally IS good for kids to be bored! Time for more “music only” days as I call them! And for me too.

Such a good video. I think men in our country are the most greatly effected by dopamine hacking. There are so many people out there that will defend porn use to the death, but I think it's one of the single biggest factors making our men unmotivated.
I think the best way for human beings to move forward to be in an equilibrium state of mind and having a substantial self awareness that comes to them naturally without so much of struggle to put in the effort, is to incorporate some sort of activities like meditations, nature walks, etc., starting from primary schools, activities that very typical in monasteries or any places offering spiritual or well-being practices. These activities should be made as part of a curriculum in each and every schools and universities in the world. This will allow human beings to have a more balanced and fruitful lives, improve mental and emotional health, maintain a happy balance between technology and actual LIFE. There are many scientific research and findings showing that these activities have long lasting permanent benefits to human mind/brain. This is just my 2 cents as a corporate tech worker for 38 years of my life. 😄

I have seen these kinds of videos a few times now and I wonder if this really applies to everyone? I do a lot of the "bad" stuff, like watching YT, eating unhealthy food and indulging regularly in all other kinds of "dopamine spikers". And yet, I never seem to lack motivation ... ? The rest of the time I am super busy working, doing sports, organizing and planning all kinds of aspects in my life etc. The dopamine spikers just act like a relaxant to me. I can go for a hard work-out and then work on some complex mathematical research for 8h straight, right after I spiked my dopamine. It never erodes my motivation, it has not in almost 40 years on earth. I managed to get PhD in mechanical engineering, start a company, run the company and keeping it alive, keeping very fit physically, learn a lot of "bonus" stuff as part of hobbies, such a fluency in multiple foreign languages such as English, Japanese and French, martial arts, mini skills that i pushed quite far like cooking complex things, tailoring etc. I got married, I spend good time with friends every week... I have the feeling that I was possibly just born with some lucky brain-damage, because even doing tedious and "annoying" things often give me dopamine. If I write some nerdy math software stuff I often encountered the situation that I really feel like getting a chocolate bar, but the pull to fix the bug is greater. And it's not like an "obsession" things, it's really that I just enjoy these processes so much. so I end up not getting the chocolate for hours because work feels more ... fun? This keeps happening and does not seems to dull down as I get older. And yet still I think I could not quit the "mini spikes" like candy, chocolate, other food, youtube and ****. They just naturally balance with work and other "important" things. I feel like I have no discipline, I am just lucky to love doing many many things. Can anyone relate?
So I've lived on this Earth starting like in the TV generation and working my way to the internet era and now social media and smartphones. The main thing I've learned from this so far is how the dopamine is created and how that it's consumed. But the last thing I need or want is for someone that's so much younger than I am, to tell me not to unlock my cell phone, and use something else as an alarm clock.
So from my perspective you told me how the dopamine is created and how it is used up, in red headlong from their tried to change everything, including the way that I live.
I will take the first part of the video and then leave the rest to everyone else.😊

Having a morning routine with meditation, making my bed, and gratitude journaling helps me a lot. However, I feel the struggle to start a task so much, which makes me procrastinate leaving the house or starting work once my morning routine is over. It's especially hard with my content creation. I will film videos I feel excited about but the funnel starts at the editing stage, and even when I overcome that, I face the same difficult thoughts when it comes to posting, thinking it's the wrong moment or the wrong post for that moment or that it's bad etc. Do you have any suggestions for those (task switching and overcoming those doubts)?
