I actually merged the « note what you have to do instead of doing it now» and the « 5 minute rule » by putting these notes in 5-min, 10-min and 15-min folders so depending on the time I have I go pick notes from the proper folder

One more thing that's really good to do if you're a student or you are learning something new and use UA-cam to learn some stuff is to have two UA-cam accounts, one for studying and one for entertainment and stuff in your breaks.
I find it hugely beneficial because when I'm working I'm not distracted by sensationalist titles and thumbnail designed to divert attention onto non-work related things but when I'm not working I'm I'm on my time allocated to have a break and watch video such as this one it ensures it's a proper break entirely away from work related videos popping up in recommend.

This is my first Ali video and I love it! I’m a retired English teacher and when I was working I had my own set of ‘rules’ for managing my day. The list of things to do was definitely one to do! I kept adding things to the bottom of the list but it was very satisfying crossing off the ones at the top. Now that I’m retired I often have plenty of time in the day and at times I’m really undisciplined- after forty years of pushing myself I reason that I’ve earned it! However, I recently learned about the ‘one minute rule’- if you can do something in less than a minute, do it now. It’s amazing how effective this is! It can be something as simple as putting away the folded washing, putting stuff in the recycling bin, tidying the bench top. Nothing earth shattering but very satisfying. Anyway, thanks Ali- love your work!😊

I personally adore the art of film and watching movies and tv shows, even going to the cinema on my own from time to time is so fulfilling for me, I really miss it when I stop doing it - like going on runs, doing yoga, meeting friends, reading books, and all that influencer-kind-of-stuff, I personally also really value watching movies that I'm excited about. It is on the same level as reading for me. As long as you live intentionally, anything that makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone is okay and you should do it.

Good to hear the videos are helpful. I have ADHD and an app I've found very useful is RoutineFlow. It involves chunking various tasks together in blocks with time periods. For example, when I get home on a Monday, my routine is: spend time with wife - go for a run - play the cello - do an hour of deep work - study or learn something. Before I start this routine, the app tells me what time everything will be finished. If I spend more or less time on an activity then end time updates to accommodate. I have a morning , after work and evening routine ready to go. They've helped so much.

Cutting out TV is something I've done for the last 2 years and it feels GREAT. I used to watch 1-4 hours of TV a day on average and it started to really bother me because I could FEEL my time just slipping away uselessly. It's felt very awesome and has compounded my productivity for the last 2 years. I only 'watch' now - mostly listen - on youtube to things that I'm trying to learn, like your productivity videos, video editing tutorials, color theory, etc. pertaining to the businesses I'm trying to build. It's so helpful to not watch TV! There is a small downside to not being able to talk about whatever the current show/movie is with work peers, but for me it's worthwhile to miss out on those conversations and keep life in order and improving.

I especially love the idea of capture any thoughts down rather than trying to remember them, the rainbow calendar (especially working with the ideal week and actual week calendars), 5 min rules (start anything hard for 5 mins only, and 5min is better than nothing) and the focus phone app. Very empowering!

My TV rule is that I don't watch tv unless I'm eating or folding laundry. Both of these tasks take about 30-45 min to do so it prevents me from binge watching. Once I'm done with the task, I can feel the procrastination if I were to watch another episode.

Turning the phone face down it’s a very effective little trick that’s worked for me too. I never check my phone unless I need to call or text or check my calendar when it’s placed face down.

I’ve always found the simplest way to save time is to make lists. If you have a lot to do in one day, MAKE A LIST of tasks in order of priority. This accomplishes two important things. One, it frees your brain up from the stress of trying to remember what you have to do. Two, it ensures the most important jobs get done even if you don’t manage to do everything on your list. But my experience is that as you tick off each finished task, you actually do get all the jobs done in much less time than you thought you would. This gives a tremendous sense of accomplishment, makes you feel organised and in control which stops you feeling stressed. And gives you the time you wanted to do something more enjoyable and relaxing. I find it works every time.

For TV shows, movies or video games I’m typically more intentional with them as well.
It’s wonderful to read, listen to or watch other people’s stories. But it’s equally important to live your own story and create your own. 🙂

For us as non-English speakers, watching TV can be a kind of STUDYING since we have to check many new words. For example, I have a notebook and I write new words and fancy sentences in it. And I also review them once in a blue moon. BTW, thank you for sharing your experiances.

I really liked the video. Although I've been following your channel for years and I sort of knew where you were going, the final rule really caught me by surprise. I agree with you in the sense that most people are religious when it comes to media consumption, but not watching television can be life-changing if you're at least willing to try it out and replace it with something more meaningful.

AWESOME video, with great tips. If we are all honest with ourselves, we WASTE tons of time daily just doing BS 'escapist' activities to procrastinate from getting some real shit accomplished. The five minute rule is golden.
By eliminating the time wasters, we have more time to do the important stuff, and are actually BANKING up some future free time that we can schedule some fun stuff. MUCH better in the long haul, and at the end of the week or month, we can likely chart better progress on our goals.
It does seem easier to develop bad habits than good ones, but your tricks certainly streamline the productivity.

I love the TV with friends only rule! I hardly ever watch tv.... But YT has certainly an issue for a while. So I'm stoked to try the One Sec App. Focus mode and phone face down rules were also things I already did. But the physical alarm clock is intriguing! I'm totally guilty of getting sucked into the phone at night when I'm setting my alarms. I've used my phone's alarm clock for years and never thought twice about it. But that was more of a health thing for me. Waking up to the loud, droning alarm tone of a digital clock, or the shrill bell ringing of an analog-both would spike my nervous system and I'd basically wake up gripped in panic. So I've never thought twice about using my phone and its pleasant sounds to wake up to. But maybe I'll give the clock another go and monitor any improvements. Thanks for sharing!!

I don't watch standard TV or have subscriptions for Netflix or any other streaming service, and it saves me no productive time. I usually work about 10 hours daily, and more is not feasible. My brain gets tired, and my eyes get tired... However, I can still decide what to do with my free time, and I found out I rather spend it drawing, knitting, reading, cooking and sometimes gaming while listening to audiobooks rather than simply watching TV. What I do watch is - obviously - youtube, but here I can choose stuff that is helpful to me, like new cooking recipes, crotchet patterns, science lectures etc. All these activities feel like time better spent than simply watching TV.

This meant a lot of evenings, weekends etc (& therefore no tv/social media/nonsense stuff). When I finished the course and had all that time back I realised just how much spare time I actually had outside of work hours!
