Bless your heart, Byron, for not calling it "Chai Tea" ... as much as I try to understand that people probably don't understand that 'chai' and 'tea' are the same thing, making 'chai tea' redundant, it still grates on my nerves to see big brands not bothering to do just a bit of research before putting down their name on a drink. But anyhow, your videos are so so good, I have learned so much from them, and I absolutely love everything you've done so far! Thank you for all the inspiration!
@John R since you're referring to a drink that's South Asian and not American (it's appropriated by the West), the least you can do is accept the naming convention of the culture you're adopting/appropriating from.
@John R lol, John. It's a 5 year old comment and you've got to have better things to do. I certainly do. You are ignorant, I pointed out your ignorance. And then we all learned you're also a typical fragile man. Nothing new here. You're literally the stereotype. It's all good though. Calling it "chai tea" is ignorant and always will be, no matter how much you try explaining it using your colonizer logic.
LOVE your recipes! As a foodie your recipes carry both visual and strong dynamic flavor components! Truly amazing and seriously delish! Thanks! Keep them coming!
I must say I love your approach on different cultures but yet authenticating them by making them your own.. keep it up because honestly your recipes are amazing!! 👍👍

Lovely. Almost thought you were stirring with a cinnamon stick there instead of the back of that wooden spoon, hah. Would make for a nice garnish. :) Thanks for sharing!
Hi Byron! May I please request a coconut cream pie for if you ever have a 'Pie Week' ? I'm yet to find a tutorial that doesn't lag on and is also helpful, which yours always are :D

Chai means "tea" in many different languages and refers to all types of tea. However, the flavour that most people refer to when drinking "chai" like at starbucks etc, is the "Masala Chai" flavour, which is a specific type of tea from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. So now and days when people order "chai" at a restaurant, starbucks or even when buying it from the store, you are actually buying Masala chai, due to the specific spices used in the tea. Hope that helps clarify things.
byron are there any typos in the ingredients list? i noticed the amount of fennel seeds you added in the video looks closer to 1 tsp than a tbs. i have a batch of tea cooling in the fridge right now - made a double batch but only used a cup of tea and it is incredibly strong and overpowers all the spices. any tips on how to rectify that? if i add water to cooled tea, would it affect the flavor or should i use more sweet cream? thanks!
Made this today! And its safe to say, im NEVER buying chai latte @ coffee chains anymore cause this recipe is wayyyy tooo good & the best part is you can control how dense or diluted you want the flavor to be. Airfrying the spices is good too if you are too lazy to whip out a pan :) Cheers!
I know this could be a very simple or boring dish but I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on mash potato and gravy! I never seem to be able to make that cream smooth tasty gravy so I was hoping you could help me out! Thanx so much keep up the great work :)
chai means tea so when people are saying chai tea, they are really saying tea tea. I am Indian and my dad drinks chai (not iced) every morning. The best way to drink chai is steaming hot and with a few biscuits to dip into it.
oh my god LOL CHAI is a type of tea, Its basically Black tea with Milk so its a certain type of tea. When translated it means tea but a certain type of tea, like what are we supposed to call green tea , chai?? or green chai?? Lmao
Esha Javed No. Chai means tea, Masala chai is black tea with Karha (the common "chai spice"). You call green tea 'green tea' because it's English (chai is not). English speakers just use the term wrong.
+Esha Javed no !!!duh actually chai means tea bc WE middle easted ppl drinks it as well ,but talking about myself i call it shai or shahi bc the accent that i'm speaking is different so here you go ,,chai > tea ,get it ,yet ?
I've been making regular southern sweet tea a while now that I have a solid recipe and I have altered a batch with ginger and just recently I purchased cardamom because I'm into culinary and cardamom is great in sweet tea.. I now have a batch of tea steeping with ground cardamom, ginger and cinnamon and I'm going to make my own chai sweet tea. Can't wait to try it.. Since purchasing ginger and other spices I've recently discovered I'm finding many uses for them. I am going to make my regular sweet tea batch with the spices and add reg 2 percent milk.. Hope it turns out well. Thanks for the video.
I love chai tea and I love the fennel and ginger I need to add that next time. Although brewing the black tea I have always been told not to more than 20 minutes or it will get bitter, does this reflect in the drink? Thank you!
Also for great chai without having to go out and find all of those spices, just go to an indian grocer and buy loose leaf chai which already has the grounded spices. All you have to do is boil water, add the chai, wait for it to infuse, then add milk and sugar, then strain. simple as thatt. You can also shred garlic and add cinnamon sticks if you please which my mom does.
Best way to turn a totally healthy drink into a calorie festival.Genious Just keep it simple Byron.Spices would have been enough. Chai is usually served with lemon and honey, nothing else. ps.Chai seeds must be removed after 4-5min they have been soaked in hot water otherwise tea turns over bitter.Just a tip
It came out really well . Thanks. I did add the ginger later. Also I added only 1/2 cup of tea. 1 1/2 cup seemed toooooo much. Also.. would have appreciated a reply to ur viewer whose actually trying out ur recipe . That's what uve uploaded it for.
Glad you enjoyed the recipe and tested it out for yourself. My tea was pretty mild, so I added quite a bit to get a decent brew of black tea. Anyways, thanks for watching and I'll try to keep the recipes coming. ;)
ByronTalbott but then u did add Assam black tea!! It's the same tea I added 190f... i got bit worried about forgetting ginger&panicked. .so wanted a quick reply as to how abouts!! Did it on my own..turned out fine.&we loved it..thanks a lot. (Prefer summerish non-alcholic drinks)!! So this had to be it..&love vanilla!! Also ive tried few of recipes earlier but it's strange that u don't have the complete instructions on ur site!! It's always the for the ease of preparation when making. If possible plz do list the instructions as well. Thanks&yes do keep the fabulous recipes coming.. :-)
Hi Byron! Love this recipe...a bit bummed that I've discovered it at the end of the summer, oh well :) quick question: I'm from Switzerland and we don't measure with cups...any idea how it could be either converted into grams or millilitres/decilitres? Also...what on earth is evaporated milk? :D thank you for sharing your delicious recipes and greetings from switzerland!

This is so lovely! I truly enjoy all your videos!
This recipe looks really refreshing, could you opt out the evaporated milk and condensed milk and just use regular milk and add sugar or honey?

Never knew that chai masala can be iced and that you can add star anise. Will try! Learned about chai masala from the UAE.
