      Hi I just went in today to my local Post office and did my first time application for a passport for future travel in the years ahead. I also just wanted to have one, always have wanted one but just kept delaying it and delaying it. Your video was informative to me of what you needed to do for it. I did the passport application then just did also the passport photo services all at the post office I was in and out literally in 10 minutes very fast! Can't wait to receive it and hold it in my hands my passport!

    I say you should get both the 72-page passport book and the passport card at the same time. It's only $140 and you won't renew it for a decade so that's 14 bucks a year. The passport card acts as RealID so you can use it for domestic travel, and as an identification card if you don't have a driver's license, as well as for land travel between the US and Canada, and for land travel between the US and Mexico. It's the best $140 I've ever spent.

    1) If you have Costco membership, get your passport photo there for only $5. No smile in your photo.
    2) Plan ahead so you don't have to waste the $60 on the expedite fee. If your passport is going to expire in 6 months, renew it now. It usually takes about about 3 weeks to get the passport.
    3) If you have to fly within a few days, you can go into the office (in San Francisco) morning and get it in the afternoon. You need to pay the $60.
    4) Check the box for more pages.

    Honestly, I would get the passport card for additional identification. In this climate where folks are stopped to be asked about their citizenship, particularly if they're of Hispanic descent, I would get it just to have something handy. Also, the REAL ID law will be taking effect in October 2020, so if you don't have an updated driver's license, you may not be allowed to travel domestically by air. Either get the passport with the passport card, or get a new updated driver's license.

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 4 роки тому +4

      Honestly, you don't seem to know that
      1) not everyone "of Hispanic descent" looks Hispanic;
      2) even if you look like you're "of Hispanic descent" or "foreign," police cannot legally stop you to ask for ID unless they have probable cause to believe you committed a crime;
      3) you don't have to be a US citizen to be eligible for Real ID;
      4) Real ID is NOT proof of US citizenship.
      5) you don't need Real ID or a passport unless you want to fly domestically or enter a secure federal building, i.e., a federal government building where a security guard asks everyone for id.
      6) an ordinary valid driver's license is all you need to drive anywhere in the US.
      7) except for domestic air travel, entry to secure federal buildings, or travel outside the US, you don't need Real ID, a passport or passport card.
      .

    First time applicant's DO NOT make out one check for $145. You need TWO checks. One for $35 which is for the execution fee that is paid the the acceptance facility (post office, court house, library, etc.). The second check is for the $110 fee for the actual passport, and it needs to be made payable to the "U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE." Do not make it out to the State Department or U.S. State Department, it will be rejected. It has to be made out the Department of State. U.S. Dept of State is accepted.
    They give you two passport photos, only submit one. Hold on to the other in case something happens to the application (lost in mail, damaged, etc.).
    You need to bring you ID and a photo copy of it's front and back. Nothing can be two-sided, everything must be single sided and be on 8x11 office paper. I know you think you're saving trees, but you aren't because the department will just send you a letter requesting acceptable copies, so you're actually killing more trees.
    He just mentioned a birth certificate, but it has to meet specific criteria. It has to be an original or certified copy, you can't submit a photocopy. It doesn't have to be THE original. If yours is really beat up and held together with scotch tape, go to the Bureau of Vital Statistics and get a new one. It has to list your full name, date and place of birth, list the full names of your parents, bear the seal and signature of the registrar's office, and be filed within a year of your birth. You need to submit the original along with a photocopy. If your state doesn't allow you make a photocopy, you'll need to send two copies, one of which will be retained; the other returned. You can also request the acceptance agent make a copy, and if they refuse, you should explain that they are authorized agents and a little legal concept call "sovereign immunity." Also, if you have one of those large 8x14 certificates, on the copier hit the "8x14 to 8x11" setting. This had to do with the fact that the record is run through a photo scanner to archive the record in case your book/card goes missing overseas.
    The most important thing to remember is that the men and women at the acceptance facilities on trained the basics of passport issuance. Their job is to make sure the application is complete and shipped to the Department of State. The Department is the only institute that has the authority to issue. So if you get a phone call or letter requesting more documents, don't call in saying "well the post office said it was fine!" They don't issue books, State does.
    A couple of final things. There is a "Other Names" section. Married women, you once had a maiden name, don't forget. Men using a initial, what's it stand for? That dumb middle name you never used; if it's on the birth certificate, in needs to be mentioned on the form. Also, if you were born in the U.S., it the city AND state that are to be listed in the place of birth. On "Utica" or "Appleton" it's Utica, NY and Appleton, WI. If you were born abroad, it's the city and country, not Toronto, Ontario, it's Toronto, Canada. Parents with kids under 16, even if they already have a book, still bring a birth certificate. If the system isn't working that day and the electronic of the previous application won't come up, they are just going to send you a letter requesting one anyways. Better safe than sorry. And finally, if you don't know the answer to a question, leave it blank. In the previous passport section where it asks for the book number, don't write "Unknown" because now you just purgured yourself; no book has been issued with that number ever.
    Okay, rant over.

    Thanks for the video😁. I recently turned in my application to the post office to receive my passport card for the first time. I chose the passport card because I'm going on my first cruise to the Cayman Islands and Cozumel in November. I also updated my license. The passport card is only good for sea travel, the Caribbean islands and Mexico. The only Caribbean island that doesn't accept passport cards is Cuba. I will get the passport book later. I was able to do my passport photo and turn in my passport application at the post office. Certain post offices will do your passport photo. It was a pretty easy process.

    When you said “write a check of the total $145.00” meaning you’re going to give them 1 check.
    Can I put the department of state & the execution fee on the same check?
    On the website it states to write one check to U.S department of state and to write another check to the facility.
    Also.... another question when I’m paying the execution fee the email stated to pay to “Postmaster” but on another video it states to pay to “facility name”, which is it?

    One thing you are underestimating about the passport card is if you have a government job or entering secure building the passport card is easier to carry than having your passport on you all the time.

    • @justus4331
      @justus4331 5 років тому +1

      IknowrealTV yes that’s true, but you can use the book for both as an ID and internationally. The card i believe can only be used to go to Canada and there was another additional country too

    • @justus4331
      @justus4331 5 років тому +1

      IknowrealTV I don’t understand when you say “bare minimum”. What I was trying to say is that the book can be used for what the card can be used for plus many more

    • @Iknowrealtv
      @Iknowrealtv 5 років тому +1

      @@justus4331 I agree and yo u are right. What I am saying is that the card has a level of convenience the book does not have. I would never tell someone to ONLY get card. If they only had 1 then clearly the book. All I was saying is that after having the book and the Card the card has more immediate use than the book in everyday life. Example could you go to a liquor store with a passport for example you could but would you want to? The ID usage of the card is pretty good. That's all I was saying. You have more practical uses for the card than the book in terms of convenience.

    • @justus4331
      @justus4331 5 років тому +1

      IknowrealTV yes really convenient for the people who does not have any government issued IDs such as a drivers license and etc, i agree. But all I’m saying is that they can be used for the same thing but the book has more benefits. Why get a passport card when you can get a driver’s license and legally drive? Or even an instruction permit as a form of an ID.
