Personal experience in 2017 I went on a 10 day Panama Canal Cruise. Traveling with just a passport card. I had travel with just the card no problem. On the 4th day of that cruise I became very sick and was transferred to the local hospital when we made port in Cartagena Colombia for a 14 day hospital stay. I had to have American Embassy come to the hospital take my picture, my passport card and a prayer that I would get a Passport so I could leave the country. NEVER EVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR PASSPORT and TRAVEL INSURANCE. A lot of countries are not allowing a sick person off the cruise ship, OR you have to pay your hospital stay and any money due to the cruise ship for any and all medical expenses. For me that was right at $20,000.00
Just saying be safe when traveling aboard

We recently had our passports renewed and also got the passport cards for reasons similar to what Sarah Phillips stated. When we cruise, we will leave our passport book and CHL id (just as a backup form of state approved photo id) in the safe in the room. Will take our drivers license and passport card as well as a copy of our passport when we go into port. Yes I know the photocopy of the passport book is worthless but if something happens and we're left ashore and can't get access to our real passports, it will just speed up getting another one at the nearest US Embassy. And based on Sarah's comment below, we will also have a copy on our phones. Just layers of security, maybe overkill, but makes me feel more secure.

I got my passport book and card at the same time. I like having both. I have a picture of the information page of my book on my phone. I carry my card with me when I go on shore and leave the book locked up on the ship. The card is a lot smaller and it saves wear and tear on the book. Your passport has to be valid for six months for you to enter a lot of countries now too so just figure it's good for 9 1/2 years. Children are only 5 years. I would still never leave the U.S. without it though. Too much could happen.

When I was a kid in the 60s living in Seattle, I went to Canada more than once and never had to do anything. One time we crossed the border east of the cascade mountains and there was no signs saying we were in Canada or leaving Washington, it used to be that easy. In Seattle, Canadian nickels, dimes and quarters were used in the stores just like American change. A very different time for sure

I had the same experience when I lived in the Buffalo, NY area! Crossing the Peace Bridge, we would be asked three questions (either direction): "Where were you born", "Where are you going", and "Do you have anything to declare". They would inspect probably one out of every fifty cars to dissuade people from smuggling things across the border.

I drove to Canada multiple times before the rules changed. I always seemed to have more trouble getting back into the US. With regards to traveling to Cuba, not sure if this is still an issue because things change from one minute to the next, but wanted to pass on being a Federal Government employee that a colleague of mine several years back while at a resort in the Caribbean was going to take an excursion from there to Cuba and he learned at the last minute being a Fed employee could not enter Cuba unless it was on pre-approved government business. So any fellow Feds may want to check first with Homeland Security before considering traveling to Cuba. And just to add for Feds, it is good idea to travel with your government ID which will get you through any US security check point in the event you loose your driver's license and or passport.

If you are planning to come to Europe, you will need the passport book. Passport cards are not used here, in Spain we have another document (mandatory to everybody older than 14) called the DNI (National document of Identification) that is a card but only useful when you travel in Spain or the EU countries. However , cards from countries outside the EU are not valid as a form of identification. So do not forget the passport. In Spain nowadays the passport is around 40€ and they give it to you the same day you ask for it, it is fast cheap and easy to obtain, so most part of the people do have them.

I have both a passport book and a passport card. I have carried them both with me when I cruise, but truthfully, I only used my passport when I'm cruising. I carry my passport with me when I get off the ship just in case I missed the ship and have to fly somewhere. I truthfully I only used my passport card when I went to Canada. I'm from Michigan so that made it a lot easier, and the card fit in my wallet. Now I have an enhanced driver's license and so my pp card is obsolete. Here's some info from Homeland Security about future EDL requirements.
"Beginning on October 1, 2020, federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, may only accept state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards as identification for purposes of accessing federal facilities - including TSA airport security checkpoints - if the license or card was issued by a REAL ID compliant state in accordance with the REAL ID security standards (meaning the license or card must include the REAL ID compliant marking). Please check with your state driver’s license agency on the process for obtaining a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card."

I'll use my story as a reason to go ahead and get the book. We planned on a Caribbean cruise, figured probably Florida, no real set plan, just Caribbean. So, we got the cards, even though we really didn't need them, but figured it would make things easier. So, along the way, we decide to do an Alaskan cruise instead, and settled on a Northbound route out of Vancouver on the Royal Princess. Well, because we got the cards, we can't fly into Vancouver. Now that we need passports, we had the wrong one. Didn't seem worth it really to go ahead and get the book after we already had the cards, so we settled on flying to Seattle, and driving to Vancouver. I guess it worked out for the best though, we are getting to see some of my wife's family, that she forgot lived in Seattle, and a nice roadtrip to Vancouver, which I hear is a great drive. So, if we had gone ahead and got our books, we could have flown straight to Vancouver. Since we didn't, we get to fly to Seattle and drive to Vancouver. We are flying in 3 days early, so we'll have time for plenty of sightseeing, so maybe getting the cards turned out to be the best option...This time.

@@msbeautyboss3784 Yes a regular drivers license will not be enough but with the Enhanced you can. This vid doesn't explain why the CARD is not sufficient for air travel. Is that so that the govt. can get more $ by requiring a book instead? I don't understand why ALL your info cannot be stored in the chip on the card and accessed by other countries. Maybe that's the reason. Not all countries can access that chip? I have no idea!

What about an enhanced drivers license,? That is supposed to be able to do land and sea, you can't fly with it but you don't have to pay anymore money it is just the cost of the drivers license. So what is the difference between them please?

Curious about missing the ship in port. I assume passports are left in your room safe. How can you get your passport if you are left behind at the port? Do you take them off the ship with you?

I take mine off, but most lines will leave the contents of the safe with the representative that works with you if you miss the ship. -Tony

I will be sailing the first time on Sunday and one thing I am not clear on is, do I need both my passport and Drivers license or can (and should) I leave the DL at home?

Passport is all you need. I always have my DL because we drive most of time. Also if you do an excursion where you drive like ATV you may need to have your DL. - Tony
