  • This video is on my 1866 Springfield Second Model Allin conversion chambered in 50-70 Government. My rifle started out as a 1864 dated Springfield rifled musket in .58 caliber. It was converted in 1866 by cutting the back of the barrel open, adding the breach block/ trap door, and sleeveing the barrel down to .50 caliber.

Normal 1866's were 3 band like the 1863 muskets. There was speculation that some were shortened hence the 2 bands. Nothing official from Springfield.

Cool gun, I was wondering, Is this gun to much of an antique to be fired or could you still load up a 50-70 government with blackpowder and it would still work?

You can buy 5070 black powder rounds specifically for the 1866 Springfield trapdoor second Allen conversion from a place called Buffalo Arms , that's where I bought it .
