Methods for heating water to clean and degrease skulls and bones
Here are a few ways that I heat water to macerate and degrease skulls and bones.
Product and tools used in the process
Fast-Heating Precision Immersion Circulator (to heat the water, works for maceration and degreasing)

Переглядів 794Рік тому
Some quick degreasing tips and how to handle hollow teeth and tusks when preparing taxidermy. Compressed air is your friend! If you shoot compressed air into the small holes in bones and skulls when it’s still warm from coming out of the a degreasing cycle. Removing teeth from the skull will help it degrease and clean faster. With that being said I never pull a tooth that I can not pull by hand...

19th and Early 20th Century Kukri’s Cleaned Update
Переглядів 1 тис.6 років тому
This is an update video for the 19th and early 20th century Kukri’s that I made videos on from IMA. I would recommend picking one or both up from IMA while they still have some and reasonably inexpensive still. An awesome piece of history and a cool blade to add to your collection.

Frankford Arsenal Hand Depriming Tool Review and Operation
Just needs a bit of work
I used ur setup, how do u keep the bags from having gasses build up and then causing them to open and leak into the cooler full of water?
Thanks for sharing very helpful for a beginner like myself, picked up a lot of great tips
Normal 1866's were 3 band like the 1863 muskets. There was speculation that some were shortened hence the 2 bands. Nothing official from Springfield.
Thx very useful. I don't know if I missed it, but how long should the skull stay in the ammonia for degreasing @ 120 degrees?
anyway I can message you directly?
This is definitely something you could restore and shoot. The sights are simple and can easily be fabricated. Similar screws are easy to get online, "track of the Wolf". Everything else is time and effort.
Hey I bought one also from IMA and I got screwed a little too. I can tell your lock plate isn't going to line up with the hole for the screw. But my lock plate would line up with your screw hole. Also it appears your lock plate would line up with my screw hole. How about we trade lock plates?
I have the 1837 rifle, i thought the 1841 didnt have a patch box, ive see others that didnt have it
Good stuff thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video. Thank you!
Thank you, I plan on making some more in depth videos explaining individual processes more, tips and tricks and individual animals start to finish
Thanks for the degreasing tips!
Any time!
Go to “Ballwright Hand Loaders” site on UA-cam and Spence Wolfs book on loading the proper black powder loads for all 45-70 cartridge loads for Springfield Rifles and carbines. It’s THE BIBLE on all Black Powder Cartridge loads.
Works great for me! Love depriming thousands of rounds while streaming. Much better than on my press.
It’s so much easier to do it when your just sitting and watching a movie or something
Great demo! I absolutely hate decapping on my reloading press. That garbage gets everywhere and can mess up the loads and the loading gear. This decapper appears to catch and contain the mess that decapping makes . It's not $29 anymore. The cheapest I can find is ~$35 and free shipping. Thanks!
Doesn’t surprise me that it has went up in price. I still use and love mine!
Lucky you, over here in Europe its more like 100$
From what I've read from when the Union & Confederacy were ordering these in the early 1860's, the condition of this is about on par with the military surplus at the time. Order 3 rifles, cannabalize, and make up 2 that will work kinda situation.
These were fun projects
When you received it, was it in shooting condition
Yes, like all antique firearms have it checked by a qualified gunsmith
Thank you. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Wood shrinkage and worm holes are common with their older model rifles. But overall you got a decent example and should clean up ok.
It cleaned up very nice!
So badass. These are priceless, you are a lucky man because there are a finate amount of these. I'm researching and about to buy one myself. How did it clean up?
I only lightly cleaned them up basically just removed all the old oil and dirt and replied them. I built some nice display stands for them
mine just came in the mail !! using it now for my 223 / 556 mil crimp !! love it !
Right on! It’s a handy little tool!
Need more videos on this
Your right! We moved about 1.5 years ago and I just brought the cannons to the new house. I’ll try to shoot some new content soon. I also am working on a new brass cannon that is a 1.5 inch bore!
Need more videos on this
Your right I do need to film some more cannon videos. Hopefully soon. I just brought my cannons to the new house after moving 1.5 years ago
Have you had any trouble out of this cannon?
None at all
Great info I've been seriously thinking about getting into loading 45-70 black powder and casting. What velocity are you getting from that load? Are you shooting a lever action or single shot? I would like to get both probably start with a 1886 but I also really like the 1885 and the Sharp's. Thanks 👍
I’ll have to look up my velocity and get back to you. I use them in a Springfield trapdoor 1873
Great i have been reloading 45 70 for years great shot vdo
It’s an awesome round!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
What is stopping me from pressing a copper plated bullet on top of black powder substitute?
nothing
I use lead bullets because I’m shooting an original rifle built 1881
Ordered one; think those are collets not grommets but you own them so you can name them. Good job,
Great video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
I've been thinking of this for some time to do a sort of 45-70 "special" for light recoil loads to do some speedier shooting as practice for quickly bringing rifle to shoulder and firing. About how does the recoil measure compared to a "standard" load of a 3 to 350grn projectile on a smokeless load? Lighter or about equivalent?
Much lighter. Less then a 243
I want to make my own powder too. I watched on UA-cam how to diy and it’s easy. I don’t know if getting all 3 powders is very easy though
that simple huh... awesome! I make random things out of brass casings, you just helped me with that. thank you
My wife uses it to make deprime cases for her arts and crafts projects all the time
I bought one of these do you know where I can get ammo for it
It's probably not made anymore, hand loading is likely the only option.
I load my own. There was only 2 manufactures making the ammo and it was about 7.00 a round
$0.21 per round. Let's see, that's $0.03 per primer(ish) and $0.18 per powder charge (give or take your local economy and when you bought your components). Free to reuse the brass and free scrap lead. If you made your own BP, you could get the cost to about $0.07 per round or even a little less if you bought the ingredients in bulk. A pound of Potassium nitrate costs about $5 at a popular Big Box hardware store. Elemental sulfur is so cheap it's almost free, and charcoal can be made from just about any clean scrap wood. Cost for the true penny pincher would be closer to $5 per pound of homemade powder, and yes, you can make it a little better(more powerful) than what they sell in the stores as proved every year in pyro competitions. Yes, it can also be done safely for those with the time to do their homework and not rush. Actually, it's handling the BP that's the dangerous part, and you're doing that already. Making it involves elements of handling with the associated risk, but this risk is not avoided simply by purchasing it. It's also legal (in most states) to make your own as long as you don't transport it across state lines, try to sell it, or end up storing huge amounts of it(Generally speaking, research the law yourself before you do any of this) It's incredibly rewarding to shoot a firearm with bullets AND powder that you made yourself. Ask me how I know. For a powder hungry cartridge like the 45-70, it's worth thinking about for those with the inclination.
good luck getting any consistency
Nice rifle.........not a musket Still a nice rifle. You should see the Baker rifle
It is a musket read the description on ima
@@jimmykool3253 yes my dear thick person the brunswick is a cap conversion of the baker rifle therefore it is a rifled musket
@@alexcrawford6983 your simple mind amuses me. The barrel is smooth because the rifled 1839 pattern fouled quickly and reduced the fire rate so the 1841 pattern was introduced removing the rifling making the weapon a musket.
@@alexcrawford6983 You are absolutely incorrect, and have no business insulting the person correcting you. The Pattern 1841 Brunswick is a musket. It has no rifling in the barrel, which is the entire difference between a rifle and a musket.
I wish I could buy 20 rounds for 27 bucks here in Canada. It’s more like 55 bucks here!
That and if you’re like me, the process of loading your own ammo is as much of a hobby as the shooting itself
Absolutely
How much are these, like $50?
Times 20
They currently run about 500 bucks for an untouched one.
who makes the best brass?
I like Starline
Looks like a useful tool. How does it perform with crimped primers? At least one of the other hand deprimers I've seen doesn't do so well with them. Good job on the video.
I haven’t had a problem with crimped primers
Looks nice though
Man, your late to the game. The best ones sold "hand select" back in 06/08
Shoots great and cleaned up good, I was late to the game for sure!
We shoot it.
Cool gun, I was wondering, Is this gun to much of an antique to be fired or could you still load up a 50-70 government with blackpowder and it would still work?
You can buy 5070 black powder rounds specifically for the 1866 Springfield trapdoor second Allen conversion from a place called Buffalo Arms , that's where I bought it .
I load and shoot it now that I’ve repaired it
Just buy a 100lb brick of lead
I get it for free recycled
Good job. Definitely ordered me one!
We love ours
When I started casting and reloading for a .357 mag, a box of 50 cost $1.13.5. Now I cast and load for every firearm I own and none cost more than $15 per hundred. If you want to shoot and shoot a lot, reload.
Hey I met you at field and stream and you said that if I was looking for some lead to contact you.
Is this tool can remove unfired primer?
Any deprimer CAN remove unfired primers...you may not like the results though.
