I visited Clovis in the late 70's. 76-77 to be exact. It was clean and nice. And people were super friendly and cool. Sad what happened to that area. It truly was paradise to me back then. Its a tragedy that all that is lost. Shame on those who took such a nice place for granted.
California is nice if you can afford to live in the good areas. Even the good areas now have homelessness the only difference is the cities won’t let them put tents up outside
Well a whole lot of right-wing bias here. California's budget was in the red during the previous three governors tenures, all of whom were Republicans. Now our budgets in the green. Further, Fresno's economies in the tank precisely because of Republican policies. And anybody who says that Fresno is the worst city in California has clearly never been to Bakersfield. This whole video is a big pile of horseshit. Don't come back.
@@chrisperry9002 Clovis is still fine to this day. They are very conservative and republican so they make sure all the homeless and crime is pushed to the fresno borders. The problem now are people from the bay area who are the complete opposite of the typical Clovis resident (so diverse, lower income from where they originate, progressive, liberal democrat, pro on defunding police, want housing for homless right in their backyard, want super dense building of housing, etc) are now moving in and ruining Clovis as well. This can be said to all other similar cities like Clovis across California.
I don't care for Fresno and I'm from Fresno but he drove around the same areas and went on and on and exaggerated the truth alot. Fresno is not as bad as he is making it seem.
Actually it's is , we have the worse everything by reports I love the 559 , but Fresno has nothing going for it and your probably saying this because you never left CA and visited a pro republican states like FL where people are thriving . Fresno cost of living in crazy compared to city's in FL
In the past few years, Fresno has made some major growth, no thanks to the local or state government. The individuals of the city have stepped up in the past 10 years, to revitalize the downtown area. Moving in small local businesses, preserving historical buildings and sites, getting community events going on every couple of weeks. The pandemic hit hard, though. A lot of us lost our jobs, our homes, the ability to afford prescriptions, etc. I was living in a tent in my parents backyard for 5 months. The homeless population boomed, and reliance on drugs exploded…. Fresno is not great, but the few individuals that have the means to make changes have made it their mission to do so, while local government officials squabble over things that’ll help nobody.
@@randomchannel609 What You Said About Clovis ISN'T True!! Clovis Has NEVER Been Anything Like Fresno! I've Lived Here 78yrs And Clovis Used To Be Separated From Fresno NEVER Did Clovis Have Any Crime Or Slums Or Homeless Like Fresno! And Still Don't Today.

So far, thank goodness, my family and I have never been victims of violence or crime, Clovis is a very clean and beautiful town to live peacefully and raise your family. My son is a CHP and he also lives in Clovis so the kids can go to the same school that he went to. Love Clovis!!!
I lived in Fresno from 09-14 and honestly sort of miss it. It was centrally located by Sequoia national park, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite. Also not too far from the bay area and LA. Lots of good people too.
Currently living here. Its pretty cool. Traffic isn't too bad, close to the Sierra parks, and in the middle of bay area and so cal. It's also easy to find work. The air quality and homeless are some of the biggest issues for me.
Fresno is far from perfect and definitely has its issues. But this guy only drove around the Poverello House area spitting misinterpreted statistics. Which is equivalent to driving around Skid Row and judging all of Los Angeles.
Dude is biased and literally drove around the same streets over and over again. You can go through any big city and find this… don’t get it twisted. It’s a fine city and you just have to know where the spots are. Glad to see people defending Fresno.
I was just in Fresno. People tend to have a glamorous image of California and it's nothing like the advertisement. It's a naturally beautiful place and the regular people are friendly and courteous but it's also dirty, dull in some places, dangerous, overpriced, and mislead.
the glamorous areas are only for the millionaires. If you in a millionaire than cali is heaven because you can afford the part of cali that people dream of but they dont realize what the low and middle class areas are like. Complete opposite
Yes, we have homeless like other large cities. You drove during pandemic while residence shelter in place. Then circled the Potter's Wheel homeless area food line area. You truly did not show downtown, Van Ness. You did not show the Brew District, Mural District, Fulton Mall, Tower District... all stroll districts with thriving businesses pre-pandimic in downtown area. We have had Republican mayors and focus on ag, and see homelessness as a choice. We have a mayer that focuses on crime and gang reduction. Like the guest shared, Hwy 99 is older than 41, and through poor areas. Lots of nonprofits helping the homeless and drug problems. We need more education at a young age about dangers of drugs. Although unemployment is high do to the Great Resignation, there are jobs everywhere you look.
We've been educating children about dangers of drugs since the late 60s, when it exploded. What needs to happen is supernatural intervention at this point
All his 'color coded' videos, on homeless inhabited neighborhoods, are aimed at the middle class , those considering fleeing the cities, for other states, or low rent areas, like in Texas or Idaho. Not that those last two are very affordable right now. He's literally 'making a living' off this.
I have lived in fresno for the last 12 years & for someone that grow up in Oakland, I honestly have nothing but good things to say about it, I see the point of your video showing only the ugly side of it ( but every big city have something similar) I live in the tower district and I have never experienced crime in the magnitude of the bay area . The worse thing that I ever experienced was that one night I forgot to lock my car & someone stole my daughter's baby seat , other that that and the weather on summer ( that you will get used to after a season or 2 ) I think is a great place to live .
not the car seat!!!! Agree. Born and raised in Fresno. I lived on Bulldog Lane over by Fresno State in early 2000s and had my radio stolen and all of my lug nuts removed but my rims had a lock lug nut, so the thieves weren't successful with that. Other than that, I haven't been a victim of any major crime and I've lived in some of the worse areas of town. Overall, I can't complain.
I've been attacked, had my car stolen, had to fight off a homeless man and been held at gunpoint when I lived in Oakland AND when I lived in Fresno lol. The only city with a higher murder rate per capita in California than Fresno was Oakland.
I’ve lived in Fresno for almost 10 years and I agree a lot with the things the gentleman from Fresno said. He paints a pretty unbiased accurate view of Fresno. I definitely agree that it is one of the last mid sized cities in California that is affordable to own a home. I would not be able to be a homeowner in the Bay or LA, or even the coast but I’m able to own a home with a 1 person income in Fresno. And, now with home values on the up and up, Fresno homeowners are able to gain a lot of equity. Totally agree that downtown sucks and it’s grimy. Long story short, don’t go downtown you have no reason to be in the extreme ghetto parts. If one is looking to move to Fresno, no matter what part you are able to afford to live in, most likely you will be in North Fresno Riverpark area, Fig Garden, by Fresno State or somewhere in Clovis. Yes there’s some horrible stuff in Fresno, but it’s just like any city, don’t go to the bad parts.
I moved to fresno back in October 2021 I’ve seen good and bad areas but over all a lot of good people Still trying to make a difference hopefully 2022 will be 🙏🏼 changes
That old mantra about "Home values going up" has some bad side too. When the assessor comes around your taxes will go up' I lived in CA when Prop 3 (or 1?) was passed. The reason it was passed was because elderly home owners on fixed incomes were losing their homes because of ever rising home appreciation and rising real estate taxes.
I’ve lived here my whole life. We didn’t have all the homeless before the 2008 financial crisis. Politicians should have tried harder to keep people from losing their homes because once they hit the street, they get on drugs and then they are pretty much just wastes of oxygen and space. Downtown has struggled for a long time because all these old buildings have asbestos and old wiring and are just money pits.
@@coldwater5707 I would recommend reading nomad land - the book gives some perspective on the aftermath of 2008. Movie is not very informative but the book is an eye opener on where people are today.
But I thought Californians were loving there Democratic policy’s they vote for . You mean paying 5 plus a gallon of gas ⛽️ is a good thing right ? I imagine if you live in Fresno you need to drive far to get to work . I don’t know how they afford it . No wonder so many homeless

I live in Los Angeles and Fresno is suffering from the same problems we are. A corrupt Governor as well as an incompetent corrupt City Mayor and city officials sadly elected by people who mostly want a hand-out not a hand-up. People who will stand for hours in a line for something free but won't spend less effort looking for a job. A sad, but true, reality. Not all Californians are that way but wherever there is a mostly Democratic voting base you see scenes like this. I'm neither Democratic nor Republican being honest. Our Mayor in Los Angeles, the infamous Eric Garcetti, is THE poster boy for stupidity and corruption.
I agree with you. Our homeless problem is only getting worse spreading throughout LA. In CA you have to work 2 jobs in order to stay afloat or hope you have a job that pays above 20 to survive. Ive never seen so many tents in all my life living in LA, Cesar Chaves street is surrounded by tents.
The culprits r not the Democrats or the Republicans nor Trump or Biden. These fictional political parties matter as much as your vote ever did. These corrupt politicians don't serve "we the people" nor work for what used to be known as; "The United States of America". They work for the separate and autonomous Government of the District of Columbia aka "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CORPORATION". These nation traitors have usurped authority over our judicial legislative n executive branches and are looting our country of its wealth. The Civil War wasn't about freeing the slaves but about full government control. This is the real reason why the southern states seceded from the union in 1861. Read about the treasonous acts of the 41st congress passed in 1871. ("Act of 1871" ) .
Except that Fresno's mayor is conservative and doesn't believe in handouts. Nice try, but clearly Republican mayors aren't doing shit for their residents.
I moved to Fresno in 86 at 9 years old, and left in 2015. I lived in every area. Even in the toughest poorest areas you meet the nicest people. I found the richer neighborhoods people are rude, disrespectful, and full of themselves. As long as you can adjust accordingly, Fresno is an awesome place. I miss it.
That's so true I been here since 91 stayed in the same area figarden loop only thing I agree with him is Fresno is dark at night downtown is lawyers and government and out of controlled homeless and rent is to high for a 20 year old out dated apts.1.300 2 bedroom🤔✌️

There are quite a few near perfect places still left in the US. They tend to be smaller tight knit communities that simply don't put up with problems like what Fresno and other larger urban areas are dealing with. Just because a community is poor doesn't mean it has to be a shit hole. This comes down to instilling decent values in kids when they are young, allowing them the opportunity to become non criminal youth/ adults and if need be moving to a more prosperous area and growing a lawful life. You really just have to draw a line in the sand one day and say after this time and date, everyone who gets convicted goes to jail or prison , serves their full sentences etc. It'll cost lots of money and feed the prison industrial complex for sure but the quality of life will once again come back to even the worst of the communities across the US . There is absolutely no need to let a city become what Fresno has become..
I agree. I’m from the valley. Fresno is doing better than it was actually. Nick just doesn’t know what he’s talking about. 🤷🏻♂️ typical outsider. There’s a reason it’s growing. Fresno is doing something right.
Fresno is decent to live that person that doing the broadcast unit looked at the west side of Fresno he does not know what he’s talking about and that is the truth that’s his own judgment. I don’t deny they are some other cities in California that is worse than Fresno. But Fresno it’s not that bad or people from the north and from the south of California wouldn’t be moving To Fresno.
Fun fact: Fresno has one of the highest number of multiple ethnicities as a percentage living in one area. As a result many corporations will introduce test products into our market because it's the best way to determine how different ethnicities will react. There are many products that are sold here temporarily that never get sold anywhere else.
I've lived in Fresno for 6 years having moved from L.A. Initially, the poor air quality knocked me down but my body adapted and I bought two high-quality air purifiers for my house. Fresno is bicycle friendly, almost very bicycle friendly. Weather is suitable for bike riding all year except for maybe a few days. Living in Central Fresno, I've been able to live without a car as grocery store, library, bank, mall, post office, Target are all within easy biking distance. And then there's the well-run bus system that I use once in a while. It doesn't freeze. Maybe a bit of ice on your windshield or some on the edge of your roof at sunup but it's Climate Zone 9b and good things grow if you water them. No mosquitoes except in the Spring near the river. You can still buy a 3BR/2BA house with two car garage and front yard and backyard for $250,000 Hot in summer but low in humidity so allows use of less-expensive evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners. I bought a house in 2018 within easy walking distance of work that has increased in value by $100k since I bought it. I feel mostly safe. There was a drive-by shooting a block over from me but it took place at a Section 8 rental full of welfare recipients unsuitably placed in the neighborhood. The neighbors would like to get their hands on the people that rented their very nice duplex that has become a total dump since occupied by Section 8 darlings. The Fresno Housing Authority is a big source of problems in Fresno with little or no oversight or transparency. Fresno has been good to me. I think almost all of the people in Fresno are good people. I've enjoyed Fresno immensely compared to my experience living in seriously mentally ill Santa Barbara. Once High Speed Rail is complete, this place will be a boomtown. An hour to L.A., an hour to S.F. But when?
You're an biased to drive by the worst parts. I could literally do the same for Japan and twist the story of how awful Japan,Tokyo is. When it's a beautiful city. I have lived in Fresno my whole life. I don’t like how it changed. A lot of homeless on the street, building boarded up, and etc. I have to agree that Downtown Fresno needs a upgrade
The first week after I moved to Fresno I ran out of Gas on Herndon. Two homeless guys ran out from some shade helped me push my car to the side of the road and told me where the nearest gas station was. They didn't ask for anything, they were just being nice. Fresno has LOTS of people like that.

I was born and raised in Fresno County, moved to Merced County back in the summer of 2018. Honestly, I’d rather live in Fresno County. Housing is through the roof in Merced County because of the Bay Area commuters moving here. Fresno has its rough areas but it’s also got its nice areas as the guy Nick interviewed mentioned. And he’s right, Fresno is basically one of the last large cities in CA where housing is even remotely feasible.
This!! Born in Merced, Raised in Mariposa County and now in Chowchilla!! Bay Area has made it almost impossible for locals to purchase property anywhere Merced County and North!!

I live 30 minutes southwest of downtown Fresno and I love the city. There are certain areas that you should clearly avoid, but if you stick to the decent side of town it’s not that bad. They have most of what you want in a major city without the overwhelming amount of people you have to deal with in LA or the Bay.
I was born and raised in Fresno (just recently moved to the Oregon coast) and it actually has a special place in my heart. It is a pretty sprawling city and it’s very easy to avoid the unfortunate and blighted areas. Being from the North, we never went downtown much unless we had a specific purpose like Jury Duty or an event at the Saroyan. The worst part about it is honestly the summer heat- if we had the climate of say the Bay Area, I probably wouldn’t have left.
He makes Fresno sounds so bad! I lived in Fresno almost half my life . I now live in Maryland and I miss Fresno so much! Fresno not that bad yeah it has crime and has homelessness like any other town but it’s actually a really good place to live with a lot of diversity and good food people are really really nice there now and I miss you Fresno
I grew up in Fresno and have lived in New York (Brooklyn). He definitely makes Fresno sound like some shanty town abyss where there’s nothing to do but get shot and get robbed which isn’t true. However that doesn’t make it any less of a shithole. A lot of it is dirty, there’s not much to do for fun, so many things close early, and it’s insanely hot.
As somebody that was born and raised in Fresno I have to disagree with a lot of what the 2nd guy is saying, They're stretching everything out instead of fixing all the broken down buildings in gang infested neighborhoods. It was cheaper for me to buy a house in Bakersfield and in a better neighborhood than it was for my sister in Fresno who spent more to live in the ghetto. I left in 2008 and it was the best choice

I travelled to Fresno CA back in 2017 on a business trip. I stayed at a hotel / Casino downtown. It didn't seem that bad back then. Like other parts of Cali, times have changed.
Wow! Thanks for talking about Fresno. In Fresno, you just have to pick your spots. Avoid potentially unsafe areas and go on about your business. Yes, homeless is problem and has been for 20 + years. Downtown is not a sight for sore eyes. Fresno is growing away from downtown, seems like that's going to be the trend. The second guy is on point about Fresno's diversity and from that standpoint, Fresno has been blessed with an abundant of immigrants. This also affects Fresno overall social-economic level. I just moved from San Jose, California. Remote tech work just made sense for me to keep my high California Salary and move to Fresno with big city amenities like an International Airport. If I had left the state my kids would lose out on in-state tuition from the Cal State universities and be far away from family in the bay area which they visit on the weekends. Fresno 10 years from now with Bitwise and the growing tech scene might be unrecognizable. Downtown Fresno just needs a new downtown like the one in San Jose (Santana Row) makeover. Downtown San Jose is less prosperous than Santana Row. Fresno has a market for upscale shopping but needs to make sure that its built in the actual downtown similar to Santa Monica blending in with new and old businesses.
I think when the prices will crash in The Bay Area, most people will go back. When Bay Area is overpriced, people move to the valley, then come right back when circumstances change. In fact, Fresno is my bellweather to the economy. When Fresno starts booming, I know a crash is coming. I lived through these a few times. The Valley is last to prosper and first to fall.

I grew up in Fresno. Grad. Clovis West 88, The real problem is overcoming a paradigm. The thought that downtown revitalization is good has to change. It will keep you poor. They fill peoples heads with revitalization to raise taxes and fill the pockets of the developer buddies.
The problem is from 40 years of urban sprawl. The developers and city government keep building outward with not enough redevelopment in the center of town. The other big problem is drugs and homelessness. There are a lot of awesome places to live in Fresno and Clovis. The guy that was interviewed accurately described the history and issues.
I live here in Fresno. I've lived in Bakersfield for 12 years, too. Was originally born an raised in Hanford, 40 miles southeast of here. One problem I noticed, especially in Hanford, people from LA and San Francisco moved here to the valley, and used of for a "back bedroom" and commute to LA and SF to work, because it's cheaper to live in the valley. Problem is, when all these people came here in the 80's and 90's, from LA and SF, they brought their gang mentality, drugs, and major crimes with them. The problem isn't with the migrant workers, or the people like myself born and raised here, but all these crowding in here from the big cities who cannot assimilate to small town living, and a slower pace of life.
While this guy makes some good points on how the city’s going down hill, his tone makes me think he actively hates it and is looking for the worst statistics he can find. Like he actively accentuates the negative words in a sentence. It’s like he WANTS you to dislike this place lmao

Yes 👍 ur guest was terrific and added a lot of insight, I think part of it is geography, growing up here in the Bay, Fresno had the rep as being the ‘armpit’ of the state…which ur guest pointed out the many factors as why it had garnered such a reputation. But with gentrification hitting all parts of the state, Fresno might look a whole lot different in 10 years 🤨

I lived in CA back in the 70's. It was wonderful. I had come from a small town in Oregon, strict meat and potatoes place, but CA was an explosion of culture, food and excitement. A great place to be back in the day.
I lived in this area on and off for over 10 years and it is overall one of my favorite parts of California for a number of reasons. This guy starts things off on the wrong foot and seems rather bigoted, but the guy he interviews straightens things out. Yeah, homelessness and petty crime have grown in the area but the violent gang violence down town isn’t what it used to be. Bottom line is use some common sense and avoid seedier areas of town! I would say that Clovis isn’t what it used to, the poverty and petty theft have become more “equalized” across Fresno county over the last 20 years.
I was in Fresno in early 1980s studying at Fresno State. I found out the down town area is way better off than it was in 1980s. These guys are trying to compare Fresno to other bay cities in California which is unfair.

Van Ness Blvd, and extension, Woodward park and lakes area, Fig Garden area, The north side is clean and beautiful....to the east side we have the beautiful charming city of Clovis with great schools, gated communities with big beautiful homes that are untouchable in the Bay Area, LA, San Diego, due to price, and very low crime. Our foothills are wonderful for hiking, biking and general out door adventures! We have great agriculture, lakes, parks, and Kings Canyon and Yosemite near by, Fresno State is one of the top agricultural, business, health care, and educational university’s. If you wanted to show the shit side of my city you succeeded and I agree.... however, if your going to show the shitty side.....show our best side too. We are proud hard working people here....so DO NOT BASH my city because you toured the shitty south side and spoke to a few down and out people who dislike Fresno!!! Talk to educated and very successful people too, who are that way because it is Fresno..... which seemed to be one of the last affordable major cities in California for starting a business and buying a home until LA and Bay Area investors showed up.....Especially if you did NOT grow up here my guy!
Enjoyed the excellent dashboard tour; an interesting narrative with an intelligent interview and special appearance of Mappy with his 2 cents. Keep up the good work Cornerhouse Entertainment ! *Thanks for sharing Nick n Sage* 🍀💚🌴
My family has decided to leave the 'Peoples' Republic of Minnesota'-before our cars are carjacked... Never thought I would leave the house where my wife died.
Remember, that homeless person used to teach your kids math. They waited on you in stores. They sold cars. They cleaned Billion dollar real estate. In some markets $50 an hour won't cover expenses and we all know wages are not going up. So we get dejected people under blue tarps. We get too much down and no up.
I went to Downtown Fresno and thought it was an extremely depressing town. It was not until I went to other areas that I began to appreciate it. The people are very nice there, and the parks are beautiful! My girlfriend from Costa Rica resides in Visalia with her family. Trips from Tulare county to fresno are fun and special to them, lake Kawea in the sequoias as well. They have great malls and ethnic food in the central valley. The housing is dirt cheap there California wise. For a good reason though. The issue I always had there were my allergies. This is coming from someone in the LA/OC areas so I am spoiled with amazing weather. Although I think fresno for the most part is improving, Visalia seems to be declining.
It turns out that the homeless staying in the stripper motels actually is a thing now. My friend works as a security guard at a remodeled motel that now acts as a homeless shelter in downtown Fresno
My father worked downtown at Gottschalk's on the mezzanine 78. He made the decision to move as far north as he could prior to my having to attend Tehipite middle school. We moved from Fresno and Belmont to Nees and Blackstone. Gottschalk's moved its headquarters there across from Woodward Park. The center of town is arguably River Park to this day. Fresno is a ring city that reached north to the river and north east to Clovis but just never went to the west or south.
West & south are full of problems but also it is full of good people. They are trying to raise families and to feel safe. Not all of us can afford to move or buy expensive homes. Respect to all my friends and neighbors just trying to survive.✌🏽❤️🌎
@@NickJohnson I just went shopping this weekend in Fresno. Not good. You want an older prospective I am your guy. My father worked for Gottschalks for 30 years and my mother worked for Pelco for 30 years.
The beginning of the video is hilarious! But being a local resident, you're not wrong at all about Fresno's downtown area. It's pretty much a ghost town after 6pm once all the banks close and City and County workers go home. It's been a long problem as development continues to move north. The City has tried some revitalization projects in the downtown and south-west sides of town, but not enough to draw people to the areas and want to spend money. Which continues to drives developers and investors into north Fresno and Clovis. Developers are going so far north that Fresno and Madera will soon be one of the same towns in the next 10 years! While still being one of the more affordable big-small towns in California, it's getting expensive here as well considering the poverty level and lack-of good-paying jobs. $300k is a stretch for the average household income at $40k a year. And that's getting you something in the areas you are filming. Move north into Clovis and your starting at $400k and easily jumping into the $700k+ price range. Anyone watching and considering, you'll want to live as far north as you can afford. LOL! Neighboring cities like Clovis (north/east), Madera (north), and Sanger (east) are your next best options and are climbing in price as well.
fresno's downtown will see huge development within the next 10-20 years, as the central valley booms. San Jose's downtown looked similar and now it's gentrified with shopping malls and such.
Being born and raised in Fresno, I have to say…the area you first showed has ALWAYS been run down and full of unhoused people. It’s definitely gotten worse over the years as most metropolitan area have. I currently live in SoCal but moved back to the area (Clovis) for a couple years and got involved with the Downtown Fresno community to try to help bring business to the area with pop ups I do. It was and is still a constant challenge to get continuous movement happening. In regards to the growth, it has evolved in the past 10 years, but could definitely grow more. Your guest is right about the city leaders holding back on letting the Downtown area flourish. Businesses open and close because not enough people support. One thing that has changed is the Brewery district and there are fun Downtown events and street fairs often, especially in the Summertime. In conclusion, Fresno like most metropolitan areas has great parts and not so great parts.
Another outstanding video Mr. Johnson, I live and work in Fresno and what you and the person you interviewed said are pretty much true!! I most definitely agree that no politician Democrat or Republican gives a damn about the people that they represent!! If you are a truck driver Fresno and the surrounding area have lots of jobs as do the truck repair shops do. Keep up the great work!! MAPPY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up in Fresno/Clovis through out the 80s and into the mid 90s. My parents were first generation Hmong refugees who farmed all their lives in the central valley until the Clinton administration took over. I spent most my childhood there so I'm a little bias when I say I miss California, and that California will always be home. Transitioning from the west coast to the east coast I can honestly say that every state and major city in America has its own problems. There is no perfection. Even in a little no name state like SC has its ups and downs. It all depends on what part of town you live in.
Born and raised in Fresno my whole life of 20 years, drugs are a problem along with the homeless but other than that it's a good community. People from Fresno are very raw and grounded!
You nailed it! People are being forced into such disparity over the unimaginable increase in cost of living. After so many people supported the increase in the federal minimum wage, the corporations decided they should be punished. Powerhouse realtors created a monopoly in most major cities, then set the new market rate. It has become a heartbreaking, but all too common, site.
This would cause poverty to an extent. People at the bottom would have a few nice years while inflation caught up. People who are middle or lower middle class would see their buying power go down. You start a job at 14/hr. Over the course of 10 years to climb to 28/hr. Starting to do ok for yourself. Then minimum raises to 25 and you’re back just above minimum wage.
The reasons for the ridiculously high home prices now are: 1) MASSIVELY EASY CREDIT, 2) Artificially suppressed interest rates by the Fed, 3) Mortgage banking system where the loan originator sells the mortgages it makes. When everyone buys on credit, price becomes no object to short-sighted (aka dumb) buyers. They bid up the price way beyond their real means to repay their mortgage. All the rest of the savvy potential buyers are then left with a choice of either buy at inflated prices or find another option. This bubble finally crashes when the US govt declares it will NOT bail out failing banks. Credit will naturally contract, interest rates will rise to account for risk, and house prices will fall to the level that the mortgage can be repaid from a a reasonable level of family income.
I’ve lived in Fresno since 1988… Fresno is not as bad as this man is saying it is. He’s riding around the part of Fresno that has almost all the homeless, when you leave that part of town it’s way better. I grew up in Fresno and the area he shows has always been the homeless area. I drive trucks and every big city has bad homeless parts.
I don't think California is save-able. If anything California could save the rest of us if the state physically separated from the continent and floated out into the Pacific.
"If California were a country, it would be the 5th largest economy in the world, more productive than India and the United Kingdom." I'm a native-born Californian. I'd love to break away. I think we would be happier as a country than as a state. I don't know if the rest of the US would really like to see the loss of the California economy or the loss of the Central Valley food producers.
It’s always a close race between NY and CA, but I think Cali takes first place when it comes to terrible liberal policies. People are waking up though. Unfortunately they are leaving CA instead of voting out the swamp creatures.
@@sleepycalico It doesn’t matter how large the Californian economy is if the people live in shit. The economic inequality and poverty is absolutely unlike most other states.
CA is interesting. Hard to pin point. I work in construction. We build a lot of really high end housing all over the state. A few blocks away or down the hill it's outright ghetto. It's really hard to explain this place. It's charming and scary at the same time.
@W California is still home to America’s biggest companies. Google, Apple, UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, Uber, twitter. The list goes on. The point is, Fresno is overlooked. Companies are choosing other cities across America to expand.
I lived in Fresno for six months and left. I now live in Cheyenne Wyoming and love it. A lot of people are moving there for the cheap housing but give it time and it will get expensive like the rest of California.
I've lived in Fresno my entire life. The worst part of Fresno is the allergies. Two times a year it is brutal for about a month or so. Spring when everything is blooming and in August September around harvest. We're surrounded by agriculture. That being said it is an amazing city! A person can literally walk 20 minutes out of the city and find food to eat on trees. It is amazing! The cost of living is affordable and there are tons of jobs for someone who wants to work. I watched the video and the city was extremely clean for the most part in the downtown area. I live in northern Fresno near Herndon and Highway 41 . I just bought my home and paid it off within a year. Fresno is a great place to live.
This guy really knows his demographic history in California. Short and brief . Very good speaker. I visited Fresno a couple if times. Its truly another world apart from what I'm use to in Southern California. Yeah the places I was at is pretty sketchy but saw some nice places also. Its like another San Bernardino

Grew up in Fresno and lived there my whole life. Left Fresno at the end of 2021 and now live in Frisco TX. Talk about a culture shock. With the breathing in ash from the surrounding fires, murders happening nearly every day, homeless everywhere, and rent rising for an apartment. It was time for me to dip ✌🏻
Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, dang… these San Joaquin cities suck a big one. The crime alone would make south Chicago blush (California in a whole Is like this). I grew up in one of these towns and I can tell you first hand things are much worse now then when I was a kid. Counting the days until I leave this mad state!!
Fresno was horrific when I lived in Ca in the late 80s/early 90s and I found a reference to Fresno being terrible in a Harlan Ellison book from the late 70s.. so it's kinda not shocking. The West Coast is fastly becoming a third world country in places, especially Ca. Can't wait for the sweeping crime bills just like the last time this happened..
I've lived in Fresno my whole life, and I think Fresno is dangerous of course but I think it also depends on where you are and who you are surrounded by. I've never had anything bad happen to me nor anyone I know. And I think that everywhere has something bad about it, kinda makes it sound worse than it is. People would go to tower district before they go to downtown. Go to river park thats nice.
Seriously, I grew up in the 90s on McKenzie Street with tons of Bulldogs and gang activity but I was never harmed in any way, neither were any of my family and friends.
Don't think Fresno is dangerous, it's people who put themselves in that position, meaning involved in drugs, gangs, Alot of domestic violence though maybe because summers are so hot.
My step brother was a Lit professor at Fresno State for years. Spent many summers in Fresno. Your guest has hit it spot on, on many levels! It was Many years ago, an all-American Agricultural Middle Class hard working town.
"All American hard working town" lmao and I know it was, but just reading that and thinking of fresno now is comical. Nothing American or hard working about it anymore unfortunately.
Victor Davis Hanson great grandparents bought a farm near Fresno in the 1870s and he still lives there VDH often makes remarks about the decline of Fresno
That actually would sound cool. Make it like a little SoHo. But the problem is no one wants to go there. People would be afraid of being assaulted, robbed, killed, raped, etc by the people in downtown. Not to mention the area smells like piss 24/7.
The Tower District already is kind of like that. A lot of bars. But its become infested with meth heads stumbling around with their shopping carts and I don't like going down there anymore. Plus since the Chicken Pie Shop closed there really is no reason to visit the Tower unless one is LGBT.

Why don't you see Austin TX its also bad on homeless crisis.

@@freddieriojas6818 Fresno is run by Republican leadership for over a few decades now.
Fresno is not great, but the few individuals that have the means to make changes have made it their mission to do so, while local government officials squabble over things that’ll help nobody.

the glamorous areas are only for the millionaires.

Yes, they did have lines for homeless during pandemic. (They werent 6 feet apart)

Cool Antonio!
not the car seat!!!!
I guess you're lucky. Tower district is all gang land.
I'd live in tower before a lot of areas.
I've been attacked, had my car stolen, had to fight off a homeless man and been held at gunpoint when I lived in Oakland AND when I lived in Fresno lol. The only city with a higher murder rate per capita in California than Fresno was Oakland.
Been a California native 88 years, don’t remember Fresno ever having a good reputation.

The city council is corrupt. The new mayor (R) is trying to clean this place up.
@Alx O Sadly it's only the beginning of what lies ahead of us, and for the rest of country (world) as well.

I always thought Fresno was a decent place. Sure it’s not perfect no place is but I still think it’s pretty good tbh
Yup. Diversity is Fresno's hidden strength. And one of the things that makes it cool.
You can still buy a 3BR/2BA house with two car garage and front yard and backyard for $250,000
Hot in summer but low in humidity so allows use of less-expensive evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners.
But when?
Great stuff. I hope you're happy.
Oh yes! let's bike in that air? PLEASE! a dump desert town plow it under and grow a crop on the land, make use of the area?

I have lived in Fresno my whole life. I don’t like how it changed. A lot of homeless on the street, building boarded up, and etc. I have to agree that Downtown Fresno needs a upgrade
You should come to art hop and see the life of downtown. First Thursday, every month in downtown vaness.
Sadly that is true. Down town Fresno has seen better days
The first week after I moved to Fresno I ran out of Gas on Herndon. Two homeless guys ran out from some shade helped me push my car to the side of the road and told me where the nearest gas station was. They didn't ask for anything, they were just being nice. Fresno has LOTS of people like that.
It's true. I've lived in Fresno for 19 years and and the people here are very friendly. You'll even find kind and humble people in the "sketchier" neighborhoods.

Nick, you found another informative person to weigh in. Learned a lot about Fresno, and it seems that city actually has a chance.

Yup -- I have a modest home in northeast Fresno and I'm very happy here.
I feel like trash works it’s way into the newer housing developments as well. Letting teens go for GTA or anyone for any crime is a huge problem.

I moved to Fresno in 1977 when I was 37, I will always love and appreciate this city.
fresno's downtown will see huge development within the next 10-20 years, as the central valley booms.
So is it good to buy a home? I live in LA and always thought Fresno was a nice area but I’m now hearing it’s bad😢

This is the obvious perspective of a scared and depressing individual.
C'mon man
I used to live there 25 years ago... now I can't even locate where I used to live.
I’m from Sacramento I greatly admire the guy being interviewed he really loves his town and knows it
I don't think California is save-able.
@@alexbosworth1582 Yes, economic inequality is infuriating. I don't know how different it is in other states.
CA is interesting. Hard to pin point. I work in construction. We build a lot of really high end housing all over the state. A few blocks away or down the hill it's outright ghetto. It's really hard to explain this place. It's charming and scary at the same time.
Fresno could be a really nice city, they need small businesses to move there and take an interest in Fresno.
…….Then you need to crack down HARD on homeless people and the gangs! Then MAYBE Fresno can turn around!
No business is going to set up shop around so many fart heads. They stand around doing nothing and farting everywhere and blame it on everyone else
You got that right, Fresno needs to be more business friendly.
@W California is still home to America’s biggest companies. Google, Apple, UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, Uber, twitter. The list goes on. The point is, Fresno is overlooked. Companies are choosing other cities across America to expand.
I had to leave California. I was too bummed watching cali get worse and worse
Good don't come back.
@@JadeDelphi Typical Californian attitude. Welcoming place ;)
Fresno is a great place to live.
facts, the air quali. is pretty bad, but the allergies are horrendous.
“Fresno! At least we aren’t Oakland.”
This guy really knows his demographic history in California. Short and brief . Very good speaker.
I visited Fresno a couple if times. Its truly another world apart from what I'm use to in Southern California. Yeah the places I was at is pretty sketchy but saw some nice places also. Its like another San Bernardino
Get the firehoses and start spraying the sidewalks down Everyday and night! Guaranteed zombies hate cold water and will move on to a town that can surprise them with the same treatment. When you voluntarily put a needle in your arm you cease to be a human being.
@viaWhatsApp🔝①②③④②②⑧⓪⑥⑥⑤ just think no need for arrests , ambulance fee's , narcan, arrests, police, court appointed attorneys fees, commisions that do nothing, special trash crews, or therapy . Giving refuge to zombies on city sidewalks must come to a screeching halt as it is eroding our once beautiful cities across america. The fentanyl zombies are so bad this must be treated as a war . Everything overpaid mayors and so called officials have done up to this very moment has been a disastrous failure. It is time to get tough with the zombies who have absolutely no shame and only look forward to their next fix and the crimes commited to obtain it. Causing an extreme health hazard wherever they go with used needless, blood ,urine, feces, trash and even dead bodies should have never been tolerated to begin with. Fire departments must be utilized to hose the streets for public safety and as a deterrent to this epidemic. Warnings can be made to the public that the sidewalks, garbage , tents and persons refusing to move will be facing cold water , no exceptions. Then we must address the corruption that enabled this debacle and get those responsible for looking the other way or profiting from this a jail cell.
Your videos are very informative. Gives me an idea about the great country.
Where are you headed Mike?
@@NickJohnson Headed to Texas, specifically the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I'm pretty excited!
I would be homeless in California.
Fresno is doing better now days. Dude talking is right.
@@californiamade5608 Why so many vacant buildings and businesses closing?
Yes California is a giant hell hole stay away.
Fresno is def a hard-scrabble town but its very livable. Its not easy to find good-paying jobs here, though. I'm grateful I'm retired.
This is a great video. I can’t wait to watch the next one!
The problem with Fresno is it’s so extreme
The highs are pretty damn high
The lows are WAAAAY low
That's what makes it interesting.
Victor Davis Hanson is a tool.
The Japanese keep their country to themselves they are united and not divided like we are. That's the truth multiculturalism is divisive and hurtful.
Diversity is perversity
And they are civilized people too!
Is democracy divisive? America seems to be divisive a long time ago before multiculturalism existed here.
They should turn Fulton mall a bar strip. Like a mini Vegas strip. Same with tower
We visited Fresno and it was bad, but not that bad. They also have an underground lemon cove there, which is really cool
