I stayed in a hostel (Bank Street) in Philadelphia for 3 nights. One of the first things I was told on arrival was that I must not turn left out of the main entrance as you'll be heading towards an area that is extremely dangerous. That was back in 94'.
I lived in Philadelphia for the 1st 35 years of my life. I remember it was always a filthy crime ridden place with huge rats. When Ed Rendell became mayor it improved briefly but returned to it's usual trashy self after he left office.
I live in Den Bosch, Netherlands. While we have our "sort of" bad neighbourhoods here, this looks like a totally different reality. I can't imagine driving through a place like that, let alone live in it.
People need to do the following: 1. Change the city officials. 2. Evaluate the existing laws. 3. Mobilize the citizens per block, district to do the clean up drive. 4. Let there be a leader who can lead the people who still wanted for change. 5. Provide assistance to those homeless like feeding program. 6. Iron hand is needed in this place. 7. Pay higher salary for garbage collectors. 8. Provide more jobs. 9. Provide safe and clean temporary shelters. 10. Show love and beauty.

I have lived my entire life in the city and have seen why home prices dropped below 10,000.00 and at that price nobody had insurance so when they set them on fire they just walked away and left it for the city to handle. They also shoplifted so much that most stores left the city. None of this is the cause of anyone other than themselves period.

It's heartbreaking to see just how far we have fallen from being a society that cared about things simply because it made a difference. So sad we don't want to make that difference anymore.
It made me think - this is probably one of the reasons of your ever rising city sprawl in the US. All hardworking people will borrow to the hilt to get the place to live in the suburbs to stay away from such stuff. My friends from the US who live in the suburb told me that the local community put some pressure on municipality to stop regular bus service from downtown to their suburb and I was wondering why? Now I know.
This is actually true, on the weekends my city stops bus transportation from downtown to our mall just outside downtown in a nice part of town, because the youth kept going there and having shoot outs in the parking lot and the amount of people getting robbed was out of control. When I was in highschool on the weekends the stores stayed open till 10 and the mall was open till 1 or 2am and you could walk around till the theater closed. Now everything starts closing by 7 and everyone under 18 must be out of the mall by 8pm.
I live in a relatively nice suburb in the US. My local grocery store has a bus stop in it that brings in all kinds of drug addicts and mentally unstable homeless people.

I was driving because my bf can't drive in city traffic. After I drove up the street. America has the nerve to pontificate to the world about how superior we are knowing full well that this is part of our reality. The heartbreaking thing is that this is replicated in most of our major urban areas and more of our rural areas than we care to admit. Appalachia springs to mind immediately. The trouble for us is that the whole world can see this, and worse, on the same internet that I just saw it on. Our foreign policy should consist of staying home, staying silent, and pouring our resources and effort into fixing this bullshit instead of into weapons and the Military Industrial Complex. I speak as a retired soldier who cannot believe I was ready to die to preserve this.

What's really hard to believe is if you go the "Philadelphia Eagles" area it's a total different scene. As Pennsylvanians we need to stop putting so much money into the NFL and clean this up! Before anyone goes off on me, just think about the amount of money it takes to upkeep that area and the city can't afford to help homeless. It's disgusting.
There are no jobs. Citizens need to feel valued and feel like they are building a viable future for themselves and their loved ones. Takes skills = training and jobs that pay a living wage, not working 3 McDonalds jobs. Politicians have no tools to fix this imho.

Yes, and Amish and Mennonites came in to Center City for visits and to sell food. Never see them anymore. There are almost no horse and buggy rides anymore and tourism is way down, best I can tell.
There are two or three people living in a car and a couple of tents near my work. This is a business district and most of the area is pretty clean. But I have to walk across the street when I pass this area because there is so much trash. They have three full shopping carts of trash, plus hefty bags that they don't even bother to seal with twisty ties. These people have nothing to do all day, yet they can't be bothered to wheel the trash to a nearby Walmart once a week? It pisses me off. This kind of thing didn't exist in this area five years ago.
Where do you expect them to throw away their trash then? When a bunch of homeless people flood the streets, there isn't going to be enough accessible trash disposals to house everyone's trash. Especially when it fills up faster. And given the lack of transportation, wheeling carts of trash that piles up every week is less than ideal to handle. Unless there are garbage disposals somewhere accessible to lighten the load every day. But even that fills up fast if every homeless person uses it.
You produce the same amount or more trash, it is just that you are lucky enough to have a trash can to put it all in. Let the city stop picking up trash in your area for weeks and see if the area you live in doesn't become like this or worse?

Yup! I used to deliver in Philly. I'm glad I don't any more.
I got laid off of my job a couple weeks ago and am going through a breakup, but seeing this makes me grateful of the life I have, opportunities I have, and support system that helps me through tough times.
Stay strong, pal ❤ And remember, there's always someone worse off than you.
Best of luck, hope you’re doing well.
I hope you are doing better
I stayed in a hostel (Bank Street) in Philadelphia for 3 nights. One of the first things I was told on arrival was that I must not turn left out of the main entrance as you'll be heading towards an area that is extremely dangerous. That was back in 94'.
It's probably worse now.
lol That area is extremely safe now. Center city used to be bad I heard but things changed dramatically in the past 20 years or so.
I had a friend from Philly, and he said that while driving through both Philly and Baltimore, you locked your doors! This footage cements his claim!
Lol used to drive trucks for a living I’ve been in the cities you are talking about and yes I don’t miss them.
I was always taught to lock doors never give people the benefit of the doubt
Not from Philly, I'm from Wilmington DE and you ALWAYS locked your doors. If you forgot, you'd take a literal U-turn even if it's gonna make you late
I lived in Philadelphia for the 1st 35 years of my life. I remember it was always a filthy crime ridden place with huge rats. When Ed Rendell became mayor it improved briefly but returned to it's usual trashy self after he left office.
Wow, just wow
Depends on the area.

It's all of Philly that this is happening to, not just the Kensington area!
I live in Den Bosch, Netherlands. While we have our "sort of" bad neighbourhoods here, this looks like a totally different reality. I can't imagine driving through a place like that, let alone live in it.
People need to do the following:
Just go with #1 & #6. As far as #2-enforce existing laws
Also, have you seen India lately?
And get back to our JudeoChristian values and abide by the ten commandments..
It's important to document these everyday street scenes for their historical value. I've enjoyed watching the 1906 films shot from a cable car going down the main street in San Francisco before and after the earthquake. Very rare and fascinating footage.
I currently live in PA only 1 hour and 9 minutes away from Philly in a small suburb called "Wyomissing" and its like an entirely different country here my advice to anyone visiting here is just avoid Philly and see the small coal mining towns situated near the Appalachian Mountain range and the farmland communitys throughout the state youll have a much better time and youll meet much nicer people.

@@GK-ku3zv The resident's of my city (Detroit) were more interested in stripping homes for scrap, than even cutting the grass or doing even simple maintenance . I have lived my entire life in the city and have seen why home prices dropped below 10,000.00 and at that price nobody had insurance so when they set them on fire they just walked away and left it for the city to handle. They also shoplifted so much that most stores left the city. None of this is the cause of anyone other than themselves period.

I drove that street last summer when me and my bf were visiting Philly. He heard about this place and wanted to see for his own eyes. It was unbelievable like a zombie apocalypse. I was driving because my bf can't drive in city traffic. After I drove up the street. I honestly had to pull into a store parking lot to take a few minutes to compose myself before we headed back down the street to get to the hotel.

I visited Philly one week a few years back. Filthiest place I've ever been too. When I got back home it felt like paradise.
It truly saddens me to see this.I am old enough to remember when that area was a thriving place with Mom and Pops stores-
Yes, and Amish and Mennonites came in to Center City for visits and to sell food. Never see them anymore. There are almost no horse and buggy rides anymore and tourism is way down, best I can tell.
I’ve had empathy for these people, I’ve lost it today, it’s unbelievable how much trash they create.
Seriously isn't there any garbage collectors???
