Using drugs in public is illegal in Canada, however the possession of small amounts of hard drugs was decriminalized because prosecuting and punishing people for addiction is cruel and isn't an effective way to curb and reduce this issue I do agree that the bill that was implemented should be scrutinized because not taking the necessary steps to rehabilitate while implementing decriminalization policies is going to fail. The right move is to rehabilitate and decriminalize, no one should be punished for addiction, these drugs are evil and they take a hold of us and it's very hard to free yourself for that grip
the sad thing is the safe supply program just fueled even more fentanyl…people would get their daily dilaudid or morphine and sell them for fentanyl anyways
Don't let it scare you this is just East Hastings in Vancouver. Its like the Portland of Canada. If you avoid the Greater Vancouver Area and the GTA you'll be fine.
I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island and it’s BAD! I found a crackpipe on a walk with my dogs and kids and in wooded area. Drug paraphernalia in our dog parks, I won’t let my kids or dog run free in the forest around our house, they quickly spot homeless and drug users on our drive to gymnastics. I have had to educate them on what things look like that they need to avoid and tell them NEVER to pick up anything they see on the ground and to stay on the sidewalk at all times. If we explore a new space, I always go first to survey the area. Our cars are constantly being checked at night for open doors (home security system) and we live in the suburban Saanich municipality. We have free drug vending machines outside local hospitals in Nanaimo. Great times to be a Canadian. Thanks Lib-NDP!
We do not have free drug vending machines, that's ridiculous. Don't spread misinformation. There are vending machines with harm reduction supplies including life saving Naloxone.
I was pretty shocked at how much Victoria degraded in a few short years. When I visited, I had no problems walking at night after a nice dinner a few years ago. I'd never chance that now and hope the city recovers. My husband and I felt really uneasy on our last trip 2 years ago. It's sad.
Imagine people mad at you for being against literally life threatening drugs, hope things get better in Canada, i remember wishing to live in Canada like 5 years ago, sad to see a really great country taking this turn…
I’m from the Netherlands and it’s not a secret we are pretty open when it comes to drugs. But this… this is insane and fucking heartbreaking. This should NOT be real.
Its not real..you're being shown the absolute worst few blocks of a huge city of millions lol...youtube is so good at making people who've never travelled think every city and country is falling apart. I could bring you to this mess in any city going back to the 70s...one of my earliest memories is seeing men lying around outside a homeless shelter on the ground...circa 1975.
@@stoneneils just because there are good areas of a city doesn't mean it's not still a major problem. Millions of people across the country live like this and its not okay. It's no longer just "their choice" when addiction is involved, and the rest of the citizens are also affected by this.
Every time people talk about decriminalization they always mention Portugal (4:03). Portugal didn't simply allow everyone to use drugs legally, they did a health project around drugs. They introduced this subject at school to warn students, they made loads of campaigns AGAINST drugs, and they HELPED drug users with free medical care and psychological help - which it didn't happen before since they could end up in jail. They decriminalize the USE of drugs to HELP people, not to make profit since it's still ILLEGAL to sell drugs.
In Portugal is not illegal own a small amount of drug in your pocket. People are allowed to use drugs, people were dying in the 80s and 90s. The law change to help people and to stop them to share needles 💉 and control infection/diseases, they gave the kit and offer help. The problem still excites but not in an apocalyptic manner. Not sure if that is the same thing???? Yes I grew up with posts in school, doctors hospitals , trains or underground 🚊. It makes me wonder if the problem is in the drug or people??looks like a very strong drug and people they can’t get away from it. Portugal did so to stop people to share needles to control transmitted diseases by the sharing/couples and new borns.
@@robinsss Yeah claiming drugs here are "illegal" just because we stopped arresting users shows a completely lack of knowledge of drug treatment and our laws.
As an Australian, I'm super shocked to see this happening in Canada. Canadian government and leaders should be ashamed of themselves for not taking actions to stop this.
The thing is, there’s a difference between decriminalizing drugs and decriminalizing drugs while also hosting treatment, support, medical care, and rehabilitation for free
This could be greatly reduced just enforcing the law. Arrest people stealing, arrest people selling drugs, arrest and confiscate people in possession of drugs. It's not a complicated matter.
@@morreamanha Did you not see the state of that hell hole? Does Portugal have tent cities in every city? Does the justice system let out repeat offending criminals victimizing the citizens? We don't need your laws or lack there of. We need Singapore's laws.
@@CyberneticCuldean “lack there of” yeah my dude, when you’re contry is in the the top 10 safest countries in the world I don’t think you have a “lack of laws”. and when we did change the laws we had the higher consumption of heroin per capita in the world. we don’t have all the problems you mentioned precisely because all drugs are decriminalised.
@@morreamanha drugs are decriminalized in Portugal and many places in Canada such as Vancouver. Your country may be faring well like that but ours is not as you can see in this video. I think this video has done more to dissuade me from hard drugs than anything in school did. We even had a guy who recovered from a heroin addiction and showed pictures of his rotting leg from using dodgy needles before it was amputated. We also had families of people who lost their children or siblings to drugs but man seeing this makes it seem so much worse because you actually see it on a real person. It's no longer just a horror story, it's a human being and the state of that city with literally every street filled with users passed out or being mugged or ODing right there is insane. I'm glad this was documented.
But let's face it, he didn't even force them to use drugs, they are adults responsible for their own decisions. But of course the mafia state that encourages drug use, whether through propaganda and even offering money to anyone who uses drugs is to blame for this.
@@SimSimi.ツ Yes, it was their decision. But you have to realise something even more horrible. Why they took it in the first place? Today, coping with fast life, stress, virtually no future... It is really hard to stay positive when you look around and try to live your life. Many people just give up life for a bit of pleasure inside their own heads. Many of those people were abused. Sometimes so hard, that a "normal" person hearing their stories would say they are lying. Just because a lot of people can't believe the hell, other people can create. So don't be so fast in judgement. And Canada made something even more horrible. Removing sanctions without preparing other possibilities for those people should be considered as a crime.

ivangomez947 True! Kensington is worse than Vancouver. Fentanyl walking zombies, piles of trash everywhere, thousands of homeless, decaying buildings, needles on the ground, etc
This has nothing to do with Trudeau; it's provincial, not federal. The title of the video should say “The Canadian province” instead of “Country.” Substances aren’t legal; they are decriminalized for personal consumption.
As an addict, 9 + years in recovery, this is heartbreaking. I can’t tell you how many loved ones I’ve lost to overdoses and that’s here in FL where it’s not legal. That situation is completely out of control and I can’t even describe how devastating it is. I hope British Columbia get their shit together otherwise more and more are going to die
You can’t just decriminalize drugs and then do nothing else. They have to provide regulation of those drugs, housing and treatment for the addicted like she mentioned.
Exactly. I support decriminalizing because drug addiction is typically a mental health issue, but you can't just legalize and walk away. You have to address the mental health portion of it. Here in the U.S. we just throw them in the prison system which makes the situation worse as well.
If prohibition doesn’t work, what makes you think regulation will? If the regulated drugs are more expensive due to that regulation as well as taxes, why won’t addicts keep getting it from the guy down the street that has it cheaper, even if it’s stepped on?
@@JMD533 because the guy down the street won’t exist. Where are all the alcohol bootleggers and illegal moonshine distillers now? People in general want to have safety including addicts. When the government is getting taxes from it all they get rid of or legitimize the guy down the street. Also, as we see in California, prices are very competitive now for thc products because there are so many options for where to buy. Ultimately though the goal is to help people get clean not enable them as is being done in this situation. The reason it has worked in other countries is the end goal wasn’t just harm reduction, it was actually helping people get clean.
@@ChoppedBananas it’s all bat dung crazy! The fact of the matter is someone is making a lot of money off this system the way it is or it would change. It’s not the drug dealers…
@JMD533 you're not wrong, but the key to legalization with regulation is to not half ass it and allow time for the regulations to have an impact. Take alcohol for example, the amount of laws around not juat the sell but the production of it makes it hard to for illegal activity around it to take place. Too many lawmakers miss that point. So when they just make it legal I. A place like Vancouver, they don't do everything else that comes with it from regulating the sells to taxing to programs to deal with addicts.

There are generational curses, and all types of different things that we must deal with as families... I know very much about addiction, and I can tell you. Your mom didn't have a choice. The definition of addiction itself, implies that the addict has no choice. If not they would choose something different, but they can't. You think your mom let you down? That she wasn't strong enough for you ? If it was a question of strength, strong people would easily overcome addiction... its commonly agreed upon that it's not a question of strength though..

Don’t mistake courtesy and vague politeness as weakness or harmlessness.
This is not reducing harm. Yes, criminal justice has historically been unjust in many ways. There are real human rights and economic grift issues intertwined with the history of substance criminalization. But abandoning a broken hammer for nothing isn’t the best option either.

It wasn't until i learnt about a virtual opioid treatment clinic in my province AND i wanted to stop that i started the road to recovery. As horrible as it sounds, making sure people can use safely and there is help should they want it is probably the most viable long term solution.
It wasn't your fault that you had an addiction. I suggest learning a thing or two about addiction. A good place to start is the works of Dr. Gabor Mate.
@sirianrune198 It is the addicts fault, at least partly. We all knew the consequences of sucking on that pipe, popping that pill or piercing your arm. It didn't stop us but we sure as hell knew it

I live in Vancouver, and this is incredibly accurate. I'm honestly amazed you didn't get jumped for your camera/footage. The dealers don't want to be on camera obviously, but even the junkies are employed as dealers to help pay off their debts. I was hoping you might touch on the closing of Riverview Mental health Clinic in this, as I feel this is largely a mental health issue that has spawned a drug epidemic. Vancouver used to have a mental health program (Riverview hospital) but it closed due to patient abuse, but the result was everyone was put onto the streets and found drugs. Now there is a massive mental health and drug epidemic with zero infrastructure to maintain it. Shocking to say the least
It would be interesting to see the parallels there. I always wondered if mental health facilities were more appreciated/accessible if drug use would go down. Of course it depends on the individuals in question but an interesting video topic.

It's good reading this because I already thought, just decriminalizing drugs doesn't make people take them. Like my country allows gras now and still the only people I see taking it are the ones that already used it before the law dropped.
Exactly!!! This is not new, it has looked like this for years! WAY before the decriminalization. The tone of this video being “cause and effect” is so misleading and untrue.
Hey bro, as a Vancouverite I just gotta say a few things: 1- drugs are NOT legal in Canada (minus weed), they were only decriminalized in the province of BC. 2- The purpose of decriminalization was to move funds that were used to fund our war on drugs into creating more mental health and substance abuse support programs and the like 3- I've lived here 26 years, and the downtown eastside has always been like this. It's not a new phenomenon All that being said, the provincial and municipal governments have totally shit the bed.
@@ShadowOfNos of course; on the other hand it seems obvious the decriminalization didn't help, to say the least; and it's stated clearly by people in the video that the new law decriminalizes drugs, instead of legalizing them; it's also explained how the policy is different compared with countries such as Portugal, were decriminalization seems to be a success; it's beyond me how somebody can be so out of touch to start a meaningless argument about the difference between illegal and criminal over this video; or to simply say "it's always been like this"...

"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards?" "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?" "I'll look. Tell me about the lizards." Ford shrugged again. "Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happenned to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it." The rest of Vancouver is beautiful and from what I’ve seen from similar videos in the LA area they have a much worse problem. Don’t do drugs and you can live a pretty good life in Vancouver.
it’s more depressing than gross, i can understand that you view drug addicts as “gross” but simply ask yourself why do you think they are doing drugs? are they suffering? do they need help? what is gross is the negligent government doesn’t care for their well-being and its making things worse.
It was an experiment and it didn’t work. It was initiated as an experiment but there wasn’t enough information on what happens to addicts. More only means more. However let’s look what the life of a paramedic looks like when all drugs were not safe supply. Deaths have decreased since safe supply was introduced. It’s a total mess one way or another.
People are gross, but our government is for allowing this to continue. Our people are hurting, and when one hurts, we all do. We need to approach this with compassion. This world is getting harder and harder to be a person in.

I’ve lived in downtown Vancouver my whole life and have watched the homeless situation progressively get worse. The government continues to provide temporary “solutions” to it instead of of using our tax dollars to come up with a permanent solution that would rehabilitate and genuinely help these people. I’m all for paying taxes if it helps these people get off the streets, rehabilitated, therapy etc, but with the way things are going with not only this but other things it’s getting more difficult everyday to justify living here and paying the price
Prices still going up all through lower mainland even with this going on? Seems government does like lots though sadly. What feels good instead of what does good. Dont fix problems just throw money at it because if they actually fix it they can't use that as a topic to run on. As well its not like its their money being flushed down the drain. Its the taxpayers and if they need more they just up taxes one way or another. Good example is housing price evaluation. Just last 2 years despite my house only around $130,000 value for 8 years prior jumped up by over $60,000 in value in just last 2 so my property tax goes up.

Hey bro, as a Vancouverite I just gotta say a few things:
1- drugs are NOT legal in Canada (minus weed), they were only decriminalized in the province of BC.
2- The purpose of decriminalization was to move funds that were used to fund our war on drugs into creating more mental health and substance abuse support programs and the like
3- I've lived here 26 years, and the downtown eastside has always been like this. It's not a new phenomenon
All that being said, the provincial and municipal governments have totally shit the bed.

@@UserTerminated007all of addicts were white people no?
The more people that leave, the less ridings they have, and the less pull they have in elections. More people need to move to the interior, with the right mindset that we can’t keep allowing this to happen, which means we need to vote-out the people who allow this to happen.
@zebatov uhhhh no thanks buddy. You guys move here to our small towns. And then vote the exact same people, and same laws that you ran away from😂
