  • Hundreds of people drive under it each day while traveling on Clovis Avenue, but are you familiar with the history of our City of Clovis sign?
We have created a short video which documents the nearly 100 year history of the sign, from the original wood sign, to the current neon version we have today.
After you watch the video, we hope you would stop by the Tarpey Depot, located not far from the sign, to pick up a free “Gateway to the Sierras” sticker, while supplies last.
Thank you to all who contributed to this video with information and photos including Shawn Miller with the City of Clovis, Beth Christensen with the Big Dry Creek Historical Society, Pam Nelson with Tarpey Depot, and K.C. Rutiaga with Fresno Neon. And a very special thank you to Christian Zarcone from the City of Clovis who shot, produced, and edited this video.

That was a nice video. In 2010 I had the privilege of being the General Contractor that got the contract from the City of Clovis that replaced the old wood poles with the new steel poles. I subcontracted Fresno Neon to take the sign down and hang it back up. I also did the brick and concrete work at the base. I cant help but to look at the sign and the poles when I am in Old Town. My little piece of Clovis Legacy that I am proud of.

Clovis Ave. was used by many going to Huntington , Shaver Lake, Auberry and many other places. It was a truck route by trucks hauling wood from the Auberry Mill as well as trucks hauling fruit from the packing houses north of town. For years there was large packing house on Shaw and Clovis, and thus this added to traffic along Clovis ave.
