Challenging Ficus material part 1 : Creating a bonsai on a rock
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- In this 2 part series, professional bonsai artist David Easterbrook is presented with an intriguing challenge.
A massive Ficus benjamina needs a restyling and a repotting but before jumping into this mission he needs to separate a different species of Ficus that was added on top of it.
In this masterclass David shows us how to plant a bonsai on a rock by selecting the right rock, protecting the roots, applying peat muck and adding layers of moss to maintain everything firmly in place.
The resulting Green Island Ficus bonsai on a rock is spectacular.

Beautiful root over rock composition, I can't wait to see what you do with the larger tree!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on bonsai and how rocks can also be used
in this artistry of
gardening . Your presentation was most
interesting. Enjoy the
trip with your son.
Fantastic job David! 😍 Can’t wait to see you at the Toronto Bonsai show! 🐦💙
Bonsai techniques are great, sharing or transmitting a lot of information to viewers!
Très belle composition ! J'adore le choix de la roche . Hâte de voir la suite :) merci David
Lots of useful information, thank you so much David!
Neat! The pretty side of the Quebec rock has a really nice face on it.
Hopefully you reach that 100k subscriber mark soon!
Vraiment très inintéressant, un grand merci pour le partage !
Hi 👋 I just subscribed. This will be great to watch. This was amazing. First time I’ve ever seen anyone attach a tree to a rock
Thanks for sharing your knowledge

I always feel I need three hands doing things like this. :-)
Hello thanks you for sharing the great video
Thank you for the video . Great 👍
love ficus bonsai very much
This is some great original content, well done.
Rock over rock style.. rock planting👍🥰
I'd be interested in knowing what is the immediate after care for this project. Does this go into greenhouse, outside, etc?
I address this in part 2 and 3 of this mini series. This rock planting and the big Ficus will be kept in a warm greenhouse at a friend's place to ensure that they will have better chances at recovering after such a drastic intervention. The ideal time to do any sort of repotting on a tropical tree would have been the warmest summer months but I needed space. Hopefully I will be able to update you guys in just a few months
Thank you for sharing
I am appretiate for your creation, so beautiful Ficus Bonsai.
What kind Ficus Tree? Is it Benjamina?
nice i love it
Very nice video
Great Job! I have now learn a new word. (keto) when i did this 4 years ago. We made wabi kusa balls. Can i use the same mix to make keto, i used crused aquasoil. Clay based and cut up spaghnum moss.
As my first attempt at root on rock failed, you video provided me with a lot of useful information. Can you suggest native Canadian species apart from junipers that would work well for root on rock
I don't think junipers are that great for root over rock. Pines are good, spruces and larch (actually Nick Lenz did many amazing with larch specimens)
I’m curious with the rock medium how often do you water number one and number two being a tropical plant will the moss live indoors?
Loved it
Do you have any tips for keeping ficus benjamina scale free? I have the hardest time with scale on my ficus benjamina.
Saya suka bonsai anda. Apakah ficus dapat tumbuh dengan baik di daerah yang memiliki 4 musim? I m from indonesia
Brilliant. Really enjoyed.

Upea kivi ja puu 👍
Meiltä Suomesta ei löydä tuollaisia kiviä, jääkausi hionut sileiksi.
cool
I like your channel. if you want 100k subs then you gotta change up your editing to make you videos more pithy/to the point
You have a valid point. I will definitely create a few shorter bonsai tutorials and presentations that can be digested in a more reasonable timeframe. That being said I don't necessarily want to sacrifice too much from the demos / masterclasses because some people truly enjoy the details. That's where many of them learn
@@BonsaiSociety oh yeah, the longer format videos are great and have their place for sure :)
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏
You threw out quite a bit of new vocabulary, but I will listen at a slower speed an make sure it was not the accent....
I would like to try a windswept on a rock, when I get the nerve....
🙏 🖖 🙏
I have 4 Google accounts and I have subscribed your channel with all 4. That is my little bit
