Never, EVER in a million years would I have thought the tree would look that good when you started! I have a 8yo ficus that looks just like yours before the transformation. Thank you for showing me how to improve my tree!
I’m too early in a learning process to say what I would have done. I think you’ve done an awesome job. Love how you bend the limbs to make them appear shorter.
This was very instructive. No way I would have expected this exquisite end result after wiring it up. As a novice bonsai enthousiast I fear getting wiring scars. I would love to learn what and when to pay attention to, to avoid scarring (and perhaps even what to do "when shit happens" and scarring has occured)
What a great transformation. And I love the videos on relatable material that we have all seen before. Often we see the "typical" ficus with the S shape trunk and the broom shape foliage. David did a great job showing what can be done setting the bones for the future while also making it look beautiful in the present.
Yes, a wonderful transformation. Thr S shape does seem a bit artificial, but when it's already started from the roots upwards, it is continued in a subtle way here.
Wow, I didn’t expect this change at the end , I bought a ficus bonsai just a week ago, the seller put it in a good size pot without holes and he told me to water it once a week a half litter, but I noticed it’s leafs begin to falling 3 days ago, it is in my living room and there is enough sunlight to reach it but I putted it 2 days ago near the window so it’s gets more sunlight. It’s small right now so I’m looking forward to try out your method once it’s get taller branches 😊
Beautiful tree!!! I must admit I did not except the tree to have ended up like that, you did a beautiful job with the branch placements. I hope to see more videos like this from you! Thank you!!
Beautifully done David. My thoughts at first was to a chop of all of those broom branches and wait for the sprouts to grow. But your way is much better ! Now we can enjoy this beautiful looking young bonsai until it grows new shouts and get then get a hair cut. You are a master 👍
This is what's beautiful about the internet, if it wasn't for videos you and other bonsai enthusiast's and artists make people like me wouldn't be able to expand the knowledge we need to produce such beautiful specimen. I am now entering my 3rd year of bonsai, i have one ficus, three acer and one cypress and i have been really lost when it comes to shaping my ficus and find myself only realy pruning it back to maintain its current shape so thank you for this video which has given me some inspiration on where i could begin and where i could take it in the future
This being the first time I saw your video, it was a wonderful experience hearing your advice of how to transform an existing tree and taking us through the whole process of seeing the work.
Very nice transformation I had no idea how much nicer it would look in such a short amount of time. Looking forward to seeing it in the future two thumbs up 👍
A very good demonstration , well explained wiring , modified the and oriented the branches to give a very good shape of the branches . A very good video for a beginner into bonsai.
You are an exceptional bonsai artist. The structure is clearly explained with great camera angles allowing the viewer to see and better understand the design you are striving to attain. The tree is very attractive at this stage of training which is encouraging to those of us just learning. Thank you for helping us to develop our vision to see the possibilities and the path of progress!
What I always find so wonderful is how less is more - by cutting off a large branch and wiring and shaping the remaining branches, the tree looks so much fuller.
Hello! You made this ficus very nicely. I would never have thought that it could be made into such a beautiful tree. Anyway, I have a long way to go before I can do such beautiful things! The video was great! Few people make their trees in such detail in front of the camera and with such good interpretation. Great!
I do have a 25 y.o. ficus, but when it gets moved / turned, the foliage will try to go back to follow the sunlight, to the point they can't and they will drop off or get folded in half.. how will foliage survive this wiring, if parts of it are forced away from their original angle of sunlight ?
Excellent transformation , the wiring and branch bends were really very well explained, just the tutorial for a beginner to understand the transformation . Good work, learnt a lot.
You have done a wonderful explain of how to train a Ficus bonsai with a load of very important points when wiring a bonsai tree , the hand movements were well photographed . Thanks a lot.
Great transformation...I am new to the bonsai game and constantly looking for new knowledge and most of all inspiration, many of you guys are great at the step by steps and not super articulate which makes it alot easier for us newbies to learn. Thank you for posting this.
I have just been gifted a bonsai starter from my friend's mother who has had hers passed on from her own mother. I liked the video and the result is beautiful. I think I would have liked a little more commentary on how and why certain branches go where. I understood a front, back and apex branch but I'm not sure what to look for in creating the other branches. Thank you for a great post.
definitely improved from where it began. started as an s curve house plant and became a nice bonsai in the making. i found some of the branch bending to be a bit a radical, but it's difficult to get a true feeling for the tree watching it on video and not seeing it in person. and after all, you are the master. really found the work on the apex interesting and vastly different from what you normally see - far more filled out and rounded. as always, thanks for sharing, David!
I am very impressed. I’ve been into bonsai since the early 70s not so much tropicals but I am very excited how you did this ficus makes me wanna go out and buy one except I know how finicky they are with temperature changes and it’s in the teens right now, I am now follower
I received 2 Ficus Ginseng from my son last July so very new to this. I thought you video was very informative, I've watch many and I liked yours as it was about moulding it into a beautiful shape not just cutting it to a twiglet, what a work of art, thank you for sharing. I hope I can keep mine alive and sculpt them well. Mine are from Airi Projects, living plant art so they're very unusual and worth a look. 😊❤
Great job with the ficus David....looks fantastic and i can see its future looking bright. Im ficus crazy and as you know they strike from cuts easily so i have tooooo many now. Thanks for the great video and your expertise David.
Hi David its the first time I have seen one of your videos and I found it very interesting. The transformation was amazing. The biggest rake for me was not to scared of using lots of wire to get the shape of tree you want. Thank you
Love the transformation ..learnt some great stuff to apply to my one that I have been trying to improve that is like what you started with ... Cheers mate ... PS i have been what seem like a little while waiting for new videos and techniques to learn from thanks
Thanks David for another educational video. Great initial styling with future using back budding and more compact brunching. Tree has very powerful trunk and will be valuable bonsai in the future.
I cant believe the difference in how it looked at the end. I didnt see the potential of that tree... wow! I started bonsai 2.5 years ago and there is sooo much to learn. I have a ficus that I purchased and am not sure how to improve it. It looks ok but is very much almost a ball I see a way to get some interest/differentiation in the branches/pads. Any suggestions?
Great inspiration for what to do with my ficus! I have been keeping mine in it's original store bought semi-cascade form, but would love to add some mouvement to it!
Awesome! I just got my First bonsai looking for ideas. This video helped me a lot. My bonsai has wounds on the trunk from wire - will they heal? Can I help it?
Im really impressed how fast and clinical you work! I had 2 hours today for a small sarissa, I love Bonsai and I want to start my own business, like you said its business for these experienced guys... I mean I would never do it only for the money on the other side I would be so happy if my hobby would pay my bills and some extra. Do you have any tipps what I should do to start my own nursery or bonsai business? Kind regards from Switzerland
I thought it was going to look the way you have sculpted it it looks fabulous my name is Jesse DeMarcus from Gig Harbor Bonsai that was an amazing transformation thank you for your videos I just stumbled on your videos today and am glad to meet you
Wow. That is absolutely fantastic. I am blown away! LOL I never thought that would look like that in the end. I thought it looked good at the beginning! Thank you. I am getting into bonsai's and I will be learning from you! I have a plant shop in London, Ontario and do not have experience with training them.
watched the video today. your follower-number (that you mentioned in the video) has tripled since you released the video. And I understand why. That was great content, thanks a lot!!!
My thought, well it look like it needed help. But to my surprise. Help you have it. It’s going to be a beautiful bonsai in the years to come. I wish I could be one of your students ! From Cincinnati Ohio. Blessings
Wow what a great job and you made it look so simply! Question-I just rec’d a tall ficus tree and am hoping to graft a small branch low on the trunk. Do I graph it by drilling a hole thru the trunk and insert a scion or do I cut a sliver into the side of the trunk and insert a freshly cut scion to fit into the sliver cut? Will air-layering also work with a ficus? Last, when is a good time to do this type of work on a ficus? Thank you for your answer and any input from your followers. 🙏🏼
Great transformation. Perhaps you could include a before and after picture.
Never, EVER in a million years would I have thought the tree would look that good when you started! I have a 8yo ficus that looks just like yours before the transformation. Thank you for showing me how to improve my tree!

You transformed this tree into an incredible bonsai! Thank you for showing your process
Honestly as a beginner you mentioned a lot of analysis and I appreciated it! I almost need to make a checklist 😂
Beautiful tree!!! I must admit I did not except the tree to have ended up like that, you did a beautiful job with the branch placements. I hope to see more videos like this from you! Thank you!!
Watching you transform this tree was great. As a newbie this was a good training lesson to learn by. Thank you for sharing!

What a beautiful transformation , I’m a beginner with a small bonsai ( ficus)
THAT WAS A VERY NICE TEATCHING , I ENJOYED VERY MUCH! I SEE THAT IT TAKES TIME , DEDICATION , ATENTION AND PATIENCE..... CONGRATULATIONS!
Yeah it is a beautiful transformation, with extreme smooth movement that is outstanding. You definitely taught me something today. Thanks 👍🏼
Unreal transformation! Thanks david.
Very nice transformation I had no idea how much nicer it would look in such a short amount of time. Looking forward to seeing it in the future two thumbs up 👍
Nice! You set structure very well. As im learning the fundamentals, you’re one to be taken note of! Thank you!
A very good demonstration , well explained wiring , modified the and oriented the branches to give a very good shape of the branches . A very good video for a beginner into bonsai.
Verry nice work as always David, the result is impressive with what you had to start with ...

Amazing transformation - thanks to your video, I will now have a go at improving my sad looking ficus.

the foliage will try to go back to follow the sunlight,
to the point they can't and they will drop off or get folded in half..
how will foliage survive this wiring, if parts of it are forced away

Just enjoying your talent and narration as you go along . Thanks again sir .
Thank you Michael most of this is unscripted and unplanned. Thanks for enjoying my natural flow
Excellent work Mr. David!!

Amazing learned so much! And such beautiful outcome!!!
I love what you did . Looks like a brand new tree .
David your video came in handy last night as we had a ficus workshop at our club. Thanks for the advice and guidance. Steve.
Love the videos David.

I liked the final outcome of the tree. I feel it could in the next few years, go even further with design concept. Thank you for the great lesson.
Ficus over rock, I would love to see it again, you inspire me to do well with my bonsai, many thanks Bill. 🌲👌

In the video David mentioned that July and August (summer for Ficus) would be a good time to to do this work.
Great transformation
Awesome job, very creative and inspiring transformation!
Sir Great working technical ideas. Thanks
Great transformation!
ماهي الماده التي تم وضعها علي ساق الشجره بعد قطعه ؟؟؟ ومن أين نشتريها ؟؟
Awesome skill… turning a untrained plant into a great bonsai. I never thought it can end like that.
I wish I have that vision.
