Never, EVER in a million years would I have thought the tree would look that good when you started! I have a 8yo ficus that looks just like yours before the transformation. Thank you for showing me how to improve my tree!

I’m too early in a learning process to say what I would have done. I think you’ve done an awesome job. Love how you bend the limbs to make them appear shorter.

This was very instructive. No way I would have expected this exquisite end result after wiring it up. As a novice bonsai enthousiast I fear getting wiring scars. I would love to learn what and when to pay attention to, to avoid scarring (and perhaps even what to do "when shit happens" and scarring has occured)

What a great transformation. And I love the videos on relatable material that we have all seen before. Often we see the "typical" ficus with the S shape trunk and the broom shape foliage. David did a great job showing what can be done setting the bones for the future while also making it look beautiful in the present.

Yes, a wonderful transformation. Thr S shape does seem a bit artificial, but when it's already started from the roots upwards, it is continued in a subtle way here.

Wow, I didn’t expect this change at the end , I bought a ficus bonsai just a week ago, the seller put it in a good size pot without holes and he told me to water it once a week a half litter, but I noticed it’s leafs begin to falling 3 days ago, it is in my living room and there is enough sunlight to reach it but I putted it 2 days ago near the window so it’s gets more sunlight. It’s small right now so I’m looking forward to try out your method once it’s get taller branches 😊

My thoughts at first was to a chop of all of those broom branches and wait for the sprouts to grow.
But your way is much better !
Now we can enjoy this beautiful looking young bonsai until it grows new shouts and get then get a hair cut.

This is what's beautiful about the internet, if it wasn't for videos you and other bonsai enthusiast's and artists make people like me wouldn't be able to expand the knowledge we need to produce such beautiful specimen. I am now entering my 3rd year of bonsai, i have one ficus, three acer and one cypress and i have been really lost when it comes to shaping my ficus and find myself only realy pruning it back to maintain its current shape so thank you for this video which has given me some inspiration on where i could begin and where i could take it in the future

Thank you for helping us to develop our vision to see the possibilities and the path of progress!

I do have a 25 y.o. ficus, but when it gets moved / turned,
the foliage will try to go back to follow the sunlight,
to the point they can't and they will drop off or get folded in half..
how will foliage survive this wiring, if parts of it are forced away
from their original angle of sunlight ?

definitely improved from where it began. started as an s curve house plant and became a nice bonsai in the making. i found some of the branch bending to be a bit a radical, but it's difficult to get a true feeling for the tree watching it on video and not seeing it in person. and after all, you are the master. really found the work on the apex interesting and vastly different from what you normally see - far more filled out and rounded. as always, thanks for sharing, David!

Question-I just rec’d a tall ficus tree and am hoping to graft a small branch low on the trunk. Do I graph it by drilling a hole thru the trunk and insert a scion or do I cut a sliver into the side of the trunk and insert a freshly cut scion to fit into the sliver cut? Will air-layering also work with a ficus? Last, when is a good time to do this type of work on a ficus? Thank you for your answer and any input from your followers. 🙏🏼
