Hello from SW fla USA. Thanks for the video. Internet service is spotty because of the storm. But it's nice to have a bit of normalcy in these circumstances.
Literally love all your videos. My kids a wife crack up at the mellow enthusiastic attitude you have. Every time you do these hard pruning videos all I think about is Edward Scissor Hands with bonsai shears. All the best to everyone!
You made me fall in love with ficus' watching you work with these. So much so I had to come back and grab one a week or so later! Watching the vid was a chance to properly cement your words. Thanks again so much. Looking forward to the next time 🙂 👍🌲
About 7 years ago, my neighbor had 2 ficus' he was throwing away. Both had no leaves at all, and were about 4 inches tall. I did the scratch test on the bark and it was still green underneath, so I asked if I could have them. One is, I believe, a Ficus salicifolia, ( willow leaf ) and the other is I believe, a Benjamina. My benjamina has much smaller leaves then your trees do...Now, these have grown into very thick, very vigorous trees. They grow very quickly, so wiring must be checked frequently, and cuttings take so easily, I now have MANY of each species. Mine grow outdoors spring ( around 60°F ) through summer, they come back in when temps stay under 55°F. As you said, they do drop leaves, which took me awhile to understand and not get panicked about, and the Willow leaf is a VERY temperamental tree, it will turn leaves yellow, if its disturbed, but dont worry, its natural. They get used to coming indoors, and when spring comes, they start shooting like crazy all over again. MASSIVE growth in the spring when feeding starts up again. As you said, pruning is almost constant, they grow so quickly, Great video Peter...
Good see to see you working with martial I have, mine have grown tiny apple like fruits on branches so I’ll wait till spring to trim & shape. The last one you shaped reminded me of Chinese dragon 😊
Thank you for the wonderful video’s. I’m new to bonsai, and was watching this video you said all Chinese elm should be outside. The sell here in the US is saying I should keep in indoors. I trust you are all Chinese elm safe to keep outdoors, our winter can get down to about - 15 f. Your advice is greatly appreciated thanks
im lucky to have a shelf in a south sunny window and grow lights over the shelf. all my tropicals grow over winter. just got a scheflera on the sale rack with a bunch of airal roots too(another decent "indoor" type imo). its doing the bonsai shuffle on cold nights haha. thanks peter!. beautiful ficus'! one day my little one might be as big haha
Just brought my tropicals in for the winter. It’s nice having a bit of the tropics inside. Working on them during the dark days of winter it’s truly one of life’s great pleasures. Thanks, keep growing
Thank you... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan,,,, A very instructional video,,,, you make very complex processes seem very simple,,,, as always, very enjoyable.... 🙏 🖖 🙏
I live in Brazil and I have a giant ficus, this plant only brings us joy for its incredible vigor. I also have a large carmona (50cm) and its secret is a good fertilization and not watering the crown, only the substrate because its trunk rots very easily which can generate fungi and pests in the future.
As usual Sir Peter, you make it look easy. For Mothers Day I received a Tea Tree. I love this plant so much I've named her Lucy! But, when it comes to trimming I don't know when, or how to begin!
I love fukien tea trees , i have no luck with them though , they are very temperamental but can make some of the most beautiful bonsai plants you will ever see. especially when in full bloom. Good luck with it
If you want to change shape or increase size of the Ficus can you allow some of the branches to stay longer the create new pads on the extended branches ?
Hello. I’m new to bonsai. I’ve had a ficus for about 8 years and I just recently repotted it. Something sparked my interest in it and have enjoyed working with it. Hope I can learn new things from you. Can prunning be done anytime of the year for r at anytime?
Time. Just be consistent year to year & you'll see growth. It takes 1-3 years before you'll notice a real difference. Get the trees outside once the temps stay above 50F. Fertilize every 30 days. Use Peter's technique, treat them like a bush, trim every couple months in the summer. Inside during the winter, just keep them near light. I use a small grow light. Don't trim & never let the roots sit in water like a lake, constant root moisture though. I use very little "dirt", mostly a rocky type substrate, similar to cactus. But, got to water almost daily which I don't mind. Use a light fan breeze indoors to avoid fungus & watch for bugs. If bugs, spray em down in the bathtub with insecticide, which is where I also water. I only repot every 3-5 years & in the spring/summer.
I understand that you say "indoor tree" because of your weather because ficuses are outdoor trees without a doubt. In fact, if you see the grouth of your ficus you will see the lack of direct sun (big leaves and long internodes)....It would be interesting if you specify that information as it is really relevant.
When I got mine, everyone thought they were dead...took me months to finally see leaves start to shoot. As long as you see green if you scratch the bark, they are still alive. But I will admit, they are finicky trees. They like constant conditions, and will "sulk" when conditions change. They do NOT like heat vents, or direct AC on them. When indoors, mine stay in a window, in a pretty constant room temp. Humidity helps...Sorry you lost yours. Dont give up.
@@Blaydrnnnr Strange, my benjamin ficus doesn't mind an environment that changes from time to time. Though I have noticed that whenever the environment does change, the plant stops growing for a time and then after some time it starts growing again. But other than that it seems to be just fine.
@@christianriddler5063 Yeah, my Benjamina doesnt mind too much either, but will drop a few leaves when moved inside until its acclimated, but the Willow leaf is far more fussy. It tends to get a bit more distressed when I move it inside or outside in the spring. But it will acclimate. You just cant be afraid and panic when these drop leaves. Yellow leaves dropping is normal from time to time.
Kupchak pirates fully tree already tree new root long ago pirates doing design new channel his pirates have been I no like picture they different thank you for good advice kupchak 🥰😏
I really wish you would stop talking about money and how much things cost and all of that. It makes you sound extremely entitled and focused only on the economical part of our hobby. You are an amazing master bonsai king. You are getting older and I know that’s what happens (my mother needs to worry about money like you do worrying about looking up how you prune a ficus…😅). So I think people are probably scared to suggest things to you because of your personality and status but I’m not buddy. I mean it from the bottom of my heart in the most constructive and positive plane sir.

There's so much pleasure in taking something other people discard as dead and useless and nurturing it into something beautiful.
Wow. What a trim

You were one of my motivations to purchase a ficus, they are majestic trees. I love mine! I love how you talk about them too!
I love watching you work! I live in Chicago and try to utilize what you are teaching!
Nice video. Thanks for reinforcing the triangular shape. I have a few ficus bonsai of my own and this reminded me to prune them.

When it get really cold and well below freezing put them in a cellar or shed just for the duration of the frost.
First viewer first comment first like....I love Bonsai from India....

What size pots are the large ones? Nice ficus. All I grow in Florida bouganvilla too.
Mr. thank you for your lovely video, my I ask what kind of ficus I have. It’s pull body trunk’s is white Color.

are there any types of ficus that are more likely to have aerial roots?
what soil do you recommend for ficus. I think you have said a peat type soil.
I must have missed it, but when is the best time to prune Ficus?
Can we make bonsai with variegated ficus tree?
Yes - why not ??
I have heard that Ficus Benjamina doesn't like hard pruning as much as the rest, and may fail to back bud.
Thoughts?
good video👏👏👏
How do you thicken the trunk of a ficus?

When I prune I get lots of white sap - is this a problem?
Perfectly normal
My Ficus bleed white sap when I prune. Is that a problem?
This is expected

Ficus in the tropics and warm climates grow in full sun. In dark shady places they will get longer internodes.
my ficus somtimes lost 1-2 green leaves

I somehow managed to kill these trees.. Thank you for the instruction Peter. 👍
