BJ stuck around a little too long, but like he said it's hard to let go, and it's like that for many athletes across all sports, but anyway, prime BJ Penn was a beast. You had to see him to believe it. He was a problem and it was a pleasure watching him during his best days
Lightweight GOAT at one point in time. What an iconic fighter. My man fought Lyoto Machida. Fighters now cut half their weight ,this man fought in open weight. One of the most naturally gifted martial artists I've seen
@@Dewitt-b8n Khabib would be too big and strong for him. I just realized how much I missed BJ Penn……..was always one my favs. I waslucky enough to see him fight here in Memphis and am glad he came on with Joe ! One of the all time OG’s for sure.
I have been watching MMA since TUF 1. BJ was the first guy I became a big fan of. Guys like him in the early days didnt really exist. A guy who would fight anyone, at any weight, in any organization. A fighter, but with the technical abilities of world class martial artists. Elite boxing when no one else really had it. Unreal on the ground with legs that he could use like arms locking people up. The craziest takedown defense where tanks like Matt Hughes would be lifting BJS heel to his own face, and still can't take him down as he's bouncing around with unreal balance and flexibility. GSP's coach studied BJ and found he had the fastest reaction time of anyone GSP ever fought. Super gifted, super talented and a real warrior. An all time great and arguably my favourite fighter ever. Miles ahead of his time at one point.
BJ in his prime is one of the top 5 fighters in any weight class all time in my opinion, I was lucky to watch his entire career, people can go back and watch the fights but it was a different feeling if you were witnessing it..He was the first real MMA Prodigy and he is one of the main reason mma is so hot today. Nothing but respect for BJ.
It's very touching to see Joe, with such wide and deep experience and understanding of fighters and fighting present his utmost respect and admiration to BJ. The positivity and firm resolve that he presented struck me as a rare and potent form of compassion... Perhaps even a sort of healing to what vestigial shadows of doubt that might have been hiding at the core of a retiring champions outlook. The freedom and relief and acceptance of a man who challenged the entire world it was palpable on BJ. THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT AND AN INCREDIBLE GIFT TO GIVE AND RECEIVE.
It takes an insane amount of athleticism to do that. Out of any active MMA fighters now I can only imagine Yoel Romero doing that and we all know how much of a freak he is.

that's the truth 💯. also, isn't it crazy how he mentioned that fighting is the mental game? waiting and thinking of a fight is what is the difficult part. So true. Any person can be a badass. but it takes a warrior to be the way the champs are.
Bj wasn't the first but made Pacific Islanders around the world believe they could do it. Jiu-jitsu blew up in the pacific islands atleast in Micronesia and Bj was a big influence. I remember him coming out and supporting young up and comers at Jiu-jitsu tournaments and mma fights.
As a fan i am so happy to see Bj on the podcast getting his flowers. I find alot of people forget and overlook how good prime Penn was. One of the Goats for me ✌
I remember when I trained a UFC fighter to improve his stand up back in 2008 in Arizona. He told me he had grappled with BJ previously and likened it to when you wrestled with your dad as a young boy...just pure old man strength
BJ will forever be one of my favorite fighters. His dedication and love for the sport is rarely seen. Fearless, brave, skilled and kind. To watch someone grow so much from their fights is also therapeutic for the fans. It really humbled this one.
Huge BJ fan growing up dude really was a killer that just stuck around a little too long Also BJ did what Khabib never did and actually went up in weight and won in two divisions and didn't have a padded record fighting nobodies
BJ has taken a lot of damage over the course of his career, so there is some CTE there. That combined with taking so many substances won't help either. The man needs all the help he can get.
You guys remember Penn in the clinch lifting his one leg putting it completely horizontal to defend knees to the body. 😭Dude was flexible as hell. He used to stand on one leg and defend takedowns.
Fighting ability aside, there was something special about him. I remember visiting my sister in Phili during the Florian fight. All the sports bars were filled to watch him fight. His entrance music would give me goosebumps every time, like I was walking to Octagon with him. For us in Hawaii, he was our "local boy", our warrior, our champion.
Nick Diaz caused that. BJ still feeling that fight. . Nick also. He's been hit with everything. Both legends. After that fight a pic was taken with Nick and BJ sitting with arms around each other. Both there faces all bruised up. That's fuckin OG respect.
@@erichaynes7502 the worst part is people not seeing it. Just watch these guys interviews before and after. Jorge is another one. Clearly no the same after Usman ko'd him.
For those that are new to the UFC or only got into it after Mcgregor’s era, this guy right here was the insane. Imagine a Prime Holloway that was a 155 and could do everything.
BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz, Ken shamrock, Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida era. This was the best time to be a UFC fan. It was all fun, funny beefs, no politics at all
I always loved BJ's personality as a person more than a fighter. He has a natural burn for competition and a lot of elite athletes have a hard time walking away. BJ is one of those guys. He had a hard time letting go. You could see it on his face the last few years if his career. But I always felt there was more to him than just fighting. Family is the thing for most people. Sidebar note: BJ Penn when he was at his best, was a ferocious barrage of punishment. A swarm with an uncanny ability to gain leverage and angles in every fight situation. The ref used to be a few shots too late with BJ. If he knocked you out with blows, it was repeated blows, lightning-fast right uppercuts with leverage, always good leverage. You can't tell how hard those shots are, but some of the uppercut knock outs, the opponent is out, and the ref can't get there in time. That's how fast BJ Penn was. Every fight legend must make a George Forman Grill type business. BJ Penn Hawaiian Burgers or something.
BJ is one of those dudes who just have it, not sure if it’s a Hawaiian thing but he just has that killer mentality that won’t back down which is why he’s one of the GOAT.
Bj Penn , Rampage Jackson , The legend Kimbo Slice . They made Mma look and seem like a street fight and when I first started watching UFC that style of fight was my favorite now that I'm grown it changed but I will never forget the feeling of watching these type of fighters fight
Kimbo was thoroughly harassed in MMA by an average UFC fighter... Kimbo IS the streetfight, which is is very unpolished and spontaneous. He'd be a great host over at Streetbeefs though
BJ Vs Nick also. Both them went fist for fist. Amazing since both are BJJ black belts and tapped out alot of guys. They just traded. Reminded of Hearns VS Hagler. 😂
In his prime I still believe he’s the best lightweight fighter ever he just never took it too seriously he was just that good he wasn’t an athlete turned fighter he was a fighter who became an athlete
has been one of my favorites of all time for a long time, was hard to see some of those losses at the end I always personally thought he lacked motivation between fights for getting in shape and pushing weight classes but I also loved him for his willingness to fight anyone.
The BJ Penn and Chuck Liddell era was so fun. That’s what really got me into becoming a huge mma fan.
Agreed. When it was actually worth paying to watch.

Wow never get notifications. Haven’t seen a rogan video pop up in a while so I check and there’s a penn interview. 🔥🔥🔥
BJ will forever be one of my favorite fighters. His dedication and love for the sport is rarely seen. Fearless, brave, skilled and kind. To watch someone grow so much from their fights is also therapeutic for the fans. It really humbled this one.

Huge BJ fan growing up dude really was a killer that just stuck around a little too long
Also BJ did what Khabib never did and actually went up in weight and won in two divisions and didn't have a padded record fighting nobodies
You good? Why you dragging khabib into this?
@@hetiszeker-999 same reason all the khabib D riders bring his name up all the time
Lmao bj was a bum. Got ktfo out by bums in the parking lot
Also a better resume
@@tsquirrel8675 Exactly.
Man I really hope Bj will be ok mentally, alot of fighters don't get out unscathed and seem like he is having some small troubles with memory.
They look like very significant memory problems. He can barely get his shit together way too much illegal substances.
BJ has taken a lot of damage over the course of his career, so there is some CTE there. That combined with taking so many substances won't help either. The man needs all the help he can get.
@@madgavin7568 You're right, I lived in Hawaii for 8 years the stories are actually extremely disturbing.
@@erichaynes7502
What have you heard? I heard sexual abuse stuff. Also screaming the n word after a car crash etc
@@erichaynes7502 same
BJ Penn doesn't get mentioned enough amongst the GOATS. At lightweight, he was nothing short of phenomenal.
Thanks for the memories BJ. That era of the UFC was the best.
The sport may have evolved but it will never be the same.
This guy was insanely talented. So many great fights from him
bro bj was a different breed. dude went toe to tow with the most feared. and made most fighters look like amateurs.
I tried jumping out a pool for months like Bj Penn did. Beast athlete. Maybe I’ll do it one day
The OG double Champ.
think Dan Henderson did it in pride first
@@sumboy6183 Randy Couture and Bj did it first but Henderson is the first and only double champ in Pride FC
@@draganbosnjakovic7173 but wasn't pride first?
@@draganbosnjakovic7173 nah it was Bj my bad Hendo is in the middle
I love how the fighting mindset & philosophy can be applied to all life scenarios...💪🏽
The BJ is a true kind hearted man who only wants to do good for his beautiful state I hope he wins
I hate watching my heroes struggling with mental health issues. We need to acknowledge the reality of head trauma.
You think he seems messed up?
Nick Diaz caused that. BJ still feeling that fight. . Nick also. He's been hit with everything. Both legends. After that fight a pic was taken with Nick and BJ sitting with arms around each other. Both there faces all bruised up. That's fuckin OG respect.
@@artvandelay2591 Yes he's messed up..watch the video again closely and you'll see many signs.
@@erichaynes7502 the worst part is people not seeing it. Just watch these guys interviews before and after. Jorge is another one. Clearly no the same after Usman ko'd him.
@@artvandelay2591 when did you start focusing on the importing ?
BJ was the best to watch back in the day, thank you for all your fights BJ 🙇♂️
I still remember seeing Penn's insane workout videos. He was a total beast
I had things to do today but now I have to listen to the Progidy BJ Penn. Legend.
i farted
Wondered who that was
For those that are new to the UFC or only got into it after Mcgregor’s era, this guy right here was the insane. Imagine a Prime Holloway that was a 155 and could do everything.
The don’t resemble one another as fighters…at all. But they are both Hawaiian 👍🏼
Bj has way better credentials than Holloway
Holloway and an total set of BJJ brilliance.
Can’t even compare Holloway to him
@@micahasher7600 I meant more like his toughness and aggressiveness
Wonderful segment. Bj is such a og. And joe just spices up the food just right as always.
Kimbo RIP brother was never a MMA legend
Rampage was awesome as well. And that insane body slam KO he did in his Pride days.. Such crazy power.
@@Godrules Rampage in his own words " I'm ALPHA". And he was FN right.
Kimbo should never be mentioned with Penn and Rampage.
Been waiting years to hear from bj penn on the podcast, god bless you 💙
penn needed to hear this
One of the G.O.A.T.'s , that's all that needs to be said
He stayed fighting a full decade longer than he should have. Last I saw he was getting KO’d by a drunk guy in a parking lot.
When I first got into MMA 13 years ago BJ was one of the best P4P fighters and I became a fan right away!
BJ/pulver BJ/GSP. BJ/Hughes. 3 of my favorites. Absolute beast. Definition of anywhere anytime
Did BJ type out the video title?
It's pretty bad lol 😆
has been one of my favorites of all time for a long time, was hard to see some of those losses at the end I always personally thought he lacked motivation between fights for getting in shape and pushing weight classes but I also loved him for his willingness to fight anyone.
bj is the reason I got into mma , honestly I've waited sooooooo lobg for him to do the JRE im so happy 😁
BJ Penn is a legend, a hall of famer. RESPECT
